[Q] Coming from Verizon HTC One (m7) - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright, So I'm a big fan of Good Overall Cameras, Good sounding Speakers(mainly Boom Sound but maybe nexus 6 too), and just a good overall (not laggy) experience. I have an S4 as a work phone, and for most things I like it, but I hate how the UI just seems to hiccup for no apparent reason and then work fine after that. My question is, is there a "need" to root this phone for performance issues/ fixing lazy coding? Or do people simply want root for customization? I say this because I know being part of the root community, we're always wanting to jump to the next best thing (aka, kernel, overclock, the 1000's of kernel features) etc. Do you hate having a Samsung device but like it at the same time? Have you ever wished you'd gotten a Nexus 6 instead? I'm honestly just growing tired of the poor camera performance of HTC and I've been very disappointed, but love the speakers. Help?

The two half sleeping phones

Hi all xda galaxy nexus users,
Here is a little and hopefully honest review of my usage of the galaxy nexus, and the galaxy s3. It's not that much of a comparison between the two devices, since we are on xda, you already know about each phone's characteristics, so anyway, just a story. I was using a HTC sensation last year, and I knew I would be getting the next nexus, so in december 2011 I finally managed to get a hold on the Gnex.
At first, I was a bit lost, no manufacturer skin, naked, pure android, but it was a really efficient device, and the screen was so gorgeous. I kept using the HTC for a few more weeks, mainly because of the camera, which was working just great, but even if there were a lot of custom roms to install, CM was not really working on it, and development was kind of stagnant, the same rom, with different names and few different tweaks.
In the meantime, I started enjoying the Nexus, and like many of you, discovered the ParanoidAndroid Rom, which was sort of the reason why I had chosen the nexus in the first place. Since then, the Sensation ended up in its box. Though, the camera, portrayed as mediocre in the reviews, was a little grainy in low light conditions, I got used to it, and managed to make pretty pictures, even if that's far from being a regular camera. Then I became a flashaholic, spending much time installing roms which made my device even better. I could then understand the flavor of vanilla, and did not want to consider anything else from now on.
Out of curiosity, as I was reached by my phone provider,as I was due to an upgrade, I accepted a deal: they renewed my yearly subscription to their service, and I could sell the HTC, and for 37€, I could get a GS3, international version. So it is now three month since I have both the nexus, and the S3. Of course, as I work in the art fields, I was sensible to the camera, and the few gimmicks, mainly the S motions, but something always drew me back to the Gnex. First of all, the lack of a fully working CM 10, no sources, camera force closing, the developers could not push it to its full vanilla potential, so I had to use stock. Well, a quad core is nothing then, when not properly optimised, compared to our dual core last year google flagship. I was always surprised by the lack of reactivity of such a powerful device. Of course, games are loading faster, and the Gpu in the S3 is working great, in real life, there was nothing on that device that really grew on me. The S3 got updated to 4.1.1/2, and even the multi window was kind of redundant with the original multitasking on the Gnex, and it was not as snappy. The physical buttons, and the delay implied to get to view all the apps in the multitasking tray, felt like a drawback to me. So many horsepower, but so few optimisation, what is the point ?
The Gnex received its 4.2/.1 updates and after a not so desired format, I got like a brand new, softwarewise, device. Of course, there are still a few kinks, like the camera not rotating as it should, and the lockscreen being changed maybe not for the better, but this phone is, to me, at least, as performant as it could, and working wayyyyyy better than the S3. So yeah, I read and watch reviews of this year's top dogs, like the s3, the One X+, the Nexus 4, but right now, I've learnt a valuable lesson, again, at least for me: it might be wise to not follow the main stream, and the advertised qualities of a skinned device. In the case of the S3, on the paper it might look an improved experience, compared to stock vanilla android, in real life, not so much. Just to be sure my mind was not playing tricks on me, I did head to head, or side to side comparison, on daily operations, multitasking, opening the browser, the settings, the phone app, everything is working faster on the dual core. So, here I am, considering software optimisation rather than mechanical powerfulness, and well, I am amazed by my one year old device.
How about you guys, have you been in a similar condition, switching between two appealing devices? What have you found out from your experience, am I the only one considering things this way?
Anyways, thanks for reading such a block of text, and enjoy your nexus !

Sorry, english is not my mother tongue language, so I didn't get what you wrote, sorry...
well , i agree with you.. today the Gnex has nothing to envy to the latest devices on the market.. maybe the camera for people who cares about it... but in daily use the Gnex is equal or better than the "best" devices out there.
It's nice to know your experience. I'm feeling really attracted by the Note 2, but your post has cooled me down

I think he meant cliff note version which means a quick short and simple summary of what you said.
I do agree with you compared to an s3 I have laying around the nexus is faster.

[Q] Buying LG G3

Hi,
Lately I've decided selling my iPhone and move to android.
After checking the top devices that android offers I had come up with 3: LG G3, HTC One M8 and Samsung GS5.
I'm having a terrible time deciding between them, although I'm kind of leaning towards the LG G3, and that's why I'm posting this here.
After some research done, I found a bunch of people saying that there's some lag while using it, and I wanted to ask you guys:
As an iPhone user migrating to android, will I find the lag noticeable and a bothersome?
Also, are we expecting to have an unlocked bootloader anytime soon or is it not worth waiting for?
It seems there is no better way other than trying for yourself. Some people say, Android lags badly compared to iOS and Windows Phone. Some don't seem to notice lag. And some don't care about the lag. People are different.

Yeah, yet feeling it for 5 minutes in the store won't give me as much experience and information as will users who use this phone on a daily basis, don't you think?
Idk, as I've never owned an iPhone, but like yurly said, it is all about preference, I don't see lag on my g3, but then again, I've never owned a phone that ever really "lagged" (besides my Samsung moment) but I know people who have gone to Android and loved it, but i also know people who have gone to Android and hated it... And the bootloader will come with time...
---------- Post added at 05:12 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:11 PM ----------
It's all preference at the end of the day, but you really can't go wrong with any of the 3 devices you listed.
Well an iphone is pretty much just an app drawer lol. Ive owned several iphones including 5s. After iOS 6.0 it all went downhill. I will admit i am an android fanboy and im spoiled by how much customization android has and how open it is compared to iOS.
In terms of the best android phones, i think the HTC One M8 could have been the greatest android device to ever launch but HTC chose to go with the mediocre 4.0 megapixel camera. I dont care what others say, the camera is terrible compared to others. I had to sell my M8 because of that. I personally dont like samsung phones because the bezels the phone has, and im not too big on the plastic build. The G3 is my second LG device and its an amazing phone.SD card slot, removable battery, 2k screen, laser focus, 13mp shooter, OIS, 3gb ram, quad core, i could go on. All those features to me make a great device. My biggest gripe about the G3 is that i have all these amazing features with a locked bootloader....
I just damaged my phone with water and now I'm thinking of getting a new one.
My dilema is between G3, Htc One(M7), Nexus 5 and either of the Xperia Z/Z1/Z1 Compact.
Can you guys share some opinions which you think is best performer, battery life etc?

I actually decided getting an Android phone because of the customization and my growing haterd towards Apple.
As to the HTC One M8, it seems amazing, and the only thing that makes me consider the other phones is the camera. I don't want a ****ty one, period. Your feedback only makes me strengthen my opinion.
About the LG, however, my main concern is the lag mentioned by a bunch of people. You, as a previous iPhone user, don't feel annoying lags while using it?
And also, about the S5, on paper, besides the screen maybe (and the 3GB RAM), it's all-round equal or better than the LG.. And I was thinking that with flasing a ROM that doesn't contain the usual **** Samsung provides, it'd be an even better choice?

There's no point to get a nexus 5 now with the nexus 6 coming out this year. For the M8, the camera was mediocre. The S5 has 2gb of ram not 3, and as to comparison, the LG on paper is way better than the galaxy S5. In real world specs, my wife has an S5 and my G3 has better battery life, better stock rom, more ram, and in my opinion a better camera. People say the G3 lags, mine doesnt much, it could be the stock LG rom is so heavy, which it is, but not as near as heavy as bloated touch wiz samsung roms lol. Once LG bootloader is unlocked this phone will be the best phone on the planet. Also, all three of the phones you're looking at have way better battery life than iphones lol.
Its not my phone to pick, but if you want me to pick for you id pick LG G3. If the bootloader isnt unlocked within the next few months sell to get S5 or Note 4. Also i hate BEZELS AROUND A SCREEN (LIKE GALAXY AND IPHONE) I LIKE THE FRONT TO BE MOSTLY SCREEN NOT SCREEN WITH UGLY BEZELS AROUND IT.....

Before G3 I had M7 and it was amazing phone. I would get M8 but it didn't felt good in my hand. I love G3 but I still think M8 is better. All depends what you want from the phone. G3 without some modifications will lag quite often. HTC has the smoothest stock experience. You have to try them to make sure wich one is for you.
I would go with the G3, but depending on your provider I've read that this phones bootloader is locked meaning you cant install a custom rom or os if thats important to you. Thats NOT a dealbreaker for me at all I love my G3 and still able to root my G3 I customized it the way I want.
Really great phone, very easy to customize, im not a heavy user so I get through the day just fine with the battery, yes I charge it at work but again it gets me through the day. Years ago I started with a iphone 3g and then made the switch to android been with the samsung galaxy line all the way up to the Galaxy S4, then jumped to the LG G3 this is my very first LG phone and I could not be happier. I found on my Samsung S4 the lagging especially during gaming was driving me crazy. Also I found there was so much more bloatware crap on my samsung phone compared to my new LG G3. Yes the LG has bloatware but much less the S4.
It really depends on what you want and the feel of the phones in your hand when using. My G3 im happy with, you may have to get use to the buttons in the back and also the android os...... iphone was pretty much plug it in and your done. Androids a little different but I prefer android.
I personally hate apple devices I have just come from a note 3 to a g3 for my first lg device so far I like it only lag I seem to have noticed is when opening messages but its like any device don't close unused apps and it will hang, at least I can easily get a full day usage out of any android unlike apples terrible battery and imo once you have an iPhone you have had them all same s*** different bucket but of course that is my opinion

I just bought the G 3 to upgrade my Galaxy S 4. I looked seriously at the G 5 and the OneX M8. What I did was to spend some time figuring out what features I did or did not like personally. What I came up with was the biggest gripe I have had personally with any smartphone was having the power and volume buttons on the sides of the phone. Since I habitually carry in my left shirt pocket, I stopped looking at anything over the largest size phone that fit the brand of shirt I wear. I was ALWAYS inadvertently powering off the phone or resetting the volume, I was to the point where I was accustomed to it and had pretty much learned to live with that, but didn't really like it much. I also wanted a removable back cover ans an SD slot. I also am in areas where data signals don't work well, so cloud storage is not a really good alternative. I also wanted the ability, out of the box, to decide where stuff went, either to internal or to SD storage. I would have preferred LG took the same stance as Samsung on offering a waterproof dustproof phone, but this is not the case.
I didn't care for the HTC camera or the Sense UI, but could learn to live with sense OK if all else was well. Good phone, not so good camera. I am also sort of tired of the way Samsung has gotten so obnoxious with bloat and as far as I am concerned they can put Knox where the sun don't shine. Verizon is bad enough here, but the combination of the two is sort of overbearing.
So, I wound up with the LG G 3. I am really happy with it. It literally blows the socks off the S 4 in terms of call quality and signal strength. The S 4 simply is like the junior high playing ball against the high school varsity. Th G 3 GPS is about the same degree better than the S 4. I call the camera of the G 3 and the S 4 a draw. I don't feel the G 3 quad HD screen is particularly world bending, but is just about perfect for my tastes. I can sure see where some like the Samsung view, but the Samsung colors look...well for me they look almost artificial. However that is a strictly personal deal, YMMV. I really like the button placement of the LG. Out of the box the LG experience is, just like they say, simpler and better.
The battery life of the LG is MUCH better than reviews led me to expect. I am not a gamer or power user, but I can get two days of use between charges. Better battery life than the S 4.
I have the stump root apk downloaded and will root it to remove the bloat I don't want. The Android OS has come far enough that for me anyway, the desirability of custom ROM flashing is not such a big deal as it once was. I have the feeling the LG G 3 will catch on enough we will see some more active development in this regard in the near future.

your experience with m8

gonna buy m8 :laugh::laugh: i need to know u enjoyed your experience with it or no ?
Great phone. The expected HTC high build quality. Quite simply the best build quality phone at its release, and then some time thereafter. Possibly only the iPhone 6, and the upcoming Galaxy S6 are on the same level as the M8, in terms of build quality.
Sense is very nice in its iterations on this phone (and you have other options if you don't like Sense). Software wise, very smooth running, and I get good battery life (of course those things are subjective). Boomsound speakers are excellent, very impressive sound coming from such a small device.
Some folks complain about the camera. But I think many of those folks are looking at the MP number on paper; rather than what the picture quality look like. It takes great photos for me. My wife has commented a number of times how much nicer pics from my phone look compared to her iPhone 5s.
Just as important as all this, the M8 has a great XDA community, with a good number of quality devs and custom ROMs.
It's a flagship phone, and until the M9 proves itself, it's still a flagship phone. You won't be disappointed. I have been incredibly satisfied with my M8 in every way.
As redpoint noted, Sense is a very light, very graceful layer over Android. Perhaps not as close to stock as Moto, but still quite good (and much better than TouchWiz IMHO). Apps fly on it, despite the CPU running slightly slower (in most markets) than the competing S5 or LG G3, and the display and speakers are top shelf.
Also, I will reiterate that the worries about the camera are largely overblown. Yes, you won't be able to blow up pictures to mount on a blimp at the Superbowl, but it takes very good pictures for most uses.
Finally, it's the only non-Nexus flagship phone left that you can completely free by going S-off if you need it.
Very satisfied so far. Around 7 hour of screen time if I don't game and very good dev support. It's like a nexus but from HTC. And boom sound is literally mind blowing first time you hear it and I never thought about factor when I got it.
Would I upgrade to an M9? No, this phone already does everything I need
Woudl I buy a M9 if I had the chance instead of M8? Considering the M8 will drop and has dropped in price a lot no, I would still get M8.

[q] s6 or m9

Alright I have the M8 currently, going to upgrade today or within the week/month. I love my M8 right? I also love how I can flash stuff on it (I have Verizon sadly), but I was thinking, theres really only a few things I use with S-OFF requirements and I'm not sure if its really worth buying the M9 just for those when the S6 has so many more things to offer that I may actually use, I am aware of one thing however, TouchWiz will never match Sense/Stock android in speed, my phone runs AOSP though it was Sense 6 for a long time, both are blazing fast. I did take a chance to use the S6 however and it was quite fast in comparison to previous models. I'm just really having a hard time deciding, the new S6/Edge look quite innovative vs the refining path of the M9, it's sort of attracting me but I'm not sure if I'm making a mistake. Before my M8 was the S4 and I HATED it, but the S6 is a different case, new less crap look and faster (faster vs older galaxies)+ more features. Not sure what I want to do. Any advice? I upgrade yearly so whatever I choose I am stuck with for the coming year.

Well I praise the M9 yes its somewhat moderate of an upgrade from the M8. HTC are getting a lot of heat for what they produced.
However I am not an all out spec junkie, and what the M9 provides is great for me.
Positives are and I will include the Camera as I like to play around with settings and once you do its very acceptable, but admittedly not on par with the S6
The Sense 7 skin is great & themes are fantastic.
The M9 is fast & fluid and I haven't had any overheating or lag or any hiccup really.
The Audio is superb and best I have experienced on any device to date.
The battery is on the better side of average at least in my experience.
The build and in hand feel is again fantastic.
Micro SD card expansion.
The S6 is a beautiful build also with better optics and no doubt with ois steadier in video capture.
Its really your call and you may want to jump on the hype bandwagon or you may see sense
you can always get a s6 and try it out. samsung usually holds their value better. so if anything you can always trade someone off cl or so for a m9 + cash on their end. just a thought that you won't be stuck on one device forever lol.
s6 edge makes me want to buy it with all the hype and that stupid super camera they put in there's. but development will most likely keep my interest in m9.

I decided I'm going to go with the S6 or S6 Edge, will decide upon trying them both again. If I don't like it, i'll sell it on eBay and buy the M9 or something else if something potentially better is available by then. I sort of made this decision based on I realized the only thing I've really done with my M8 being S-OFF is LiquidSmooth and a few root things, and of course TWRP backups but since I won't be doing ROM's on this it won't really be necessary and besides I can always use that half-4$$'ed version they have for locked phones. Anyways gonna give Samsung a go again, as I said if I don't like it, M9 here I come! If I do and miss my M8 i'll just switch between phones a lot. All ways are a win and I get to try the S6 for an extended time.

If you had to choose between two phones (5x and Samsung G. S6) , which would it be?

I'm honestly not sure which phone to choose.
May you roll up some personal views on the matter?
Because right now I am using both phones every second day, and I really can't make up my mind regarding this matter.. So listening to someone else would help.
Im facing that the software on the nexus 5x and the ability to customize it so much more is a huge adventage, however the S6 got some great specs.
So yeh.
Opinions please, if that's allowed to ask for here I would gladly appreciate a nice discussion with personal opinions
Regards!
Wish it were that simple that we could say "sure that's easy go with the 5X" and you'd be as happy as a clam by choosing what we suggest you pick. Since that's not reality only you can decide. You use both phones why can't you decide? Honestly, what can we offer that would sway you one way or the other? Do you really want to base your decision off of what 'we' say rather than 'your own experience' using both devices? Honest questions
I had an S6 from August to this past January before I traded it for a 5x. There are a few things I miss, such as the extra bright screen and overall build quality. The S6 camera is definitely more detailed and faster as well, but I prefer the low light performance of the 5x by far.
All in all, I'm much happier with the 5x as I prefer stock Android vs Touchwiz and being first to get the latest updates.
I'm completely fed up with touchwiz and all of the bloat on Samsung phones. It got to be as bad as HTC sense. And unless you have the newest model of a flagship phone, you are most likely not going to get an update. I have been very pleased with my 5x and no contract and $300 for a brand new phone, I couldn't pass it up.

Nexus. Always Nexus. I have no patience any more for manufacturer's and carrier's crapware. Give me pure, stock Android running on the current reference device.
I am picking me up an s6 for $200 then to decide which is work phone and which will be personal phone.

I get your point here, I do. But my personal experience varies so much, and I'm afraid there are things i've overseen the last 9 days of having them both available. Fingerprint location, build quality, camera features, screen brightness and contrast, saturation etc... so many things on them both that varies, but still makes them good their own way. Software updates, that's a good one mentioned.

Thanks for sharing your experience. After a day of using the nexus, I kind of miss the metal edges on the S6 and the performance which makes the experience butter-smooth. After a day using the S6 I miss the clean Android, the fingerprint-scanner on the back and the amazing low light shots with the camera.
So... gosh im confused.

Unless you trip KNOX and flash custom ROMs - CM is in development, however the exynos chipset seems to be a pain in the ass.
Anyway, thanks everyone. I take all this in consideration and I will keep it in mind when using them both. Hopefully i'll sort out my mind soon.
Keeping it short. Had the s6, it sucked. Hard...
Great build and specs, worthless reception and horrible batterylife. So even though I loved the rest, the basics sucked. The nexus 5x is great, but awfull feel. I hate plastic. But all the rest is awsome. So sticking with it for now.
Wishing you luck !
I'd go with the 6P haha

Thanks for the interpretation. I'm glad to hear I'm not alone judging the plasty feel of it. The vibration aswell, sounds like a child's toy.
Currently using the 5x and got stunned over the well performing battery. Already got 5 h with screen on, using a custom kernel and a few tweaks
That was another point... I'm not into flashing roms on Nexus devices (as I like stock Android) but I had planned to flash CM on the S6. Not researching this before my purchase was a big mistake as I had no idea about the drama with Samsung Exynos chips not being open sourced.. CM will probably never be up to snuff on the S6.

Just to answer you - The way it looks now (I've been closely paying attention) it seems like the development is going forward with the CM build for s6. It will be at least usable pretty soon. Well, it's a guess because they need to reverse engineer the stuff on the phone.
Compared to the nexus devices it's rediclious. I tested cm13 on my 5x and got stunned. So many possibilities and I must confess that I'm obsessed with flashing roms and stuff. That's kind of the reason I chose to buy my nexus. That's probably the best thing ever
