I flashed and older pre-root image and then ended up updating the SuperSu app and su binary.
Can I update to the newer firmware simply by flashing the new pre-rooted image? I don't want to loose all my data in the process.

Not sure, but the rooting post doesn't mention any loss of data. I think it should just be fine. How about backup it all and then flashing the new pre-rooted?
What would be the best way to backup? SOrry for the noob questions. I'm new to the whole rooting thing

There is no loss of data....Just make sure you dont wipe data/cache from the recovery menu... You dont have to worry about loss of data if you follow the guide correctly....Still if you want a backup open the backup app from the drawer and backup your apks+data...You can also backup using adb or other tools available online (You can try Titanium Backup or Helium)
And DONT APPLY ANY OTA...UPDATE USING ADB....Rest everything will be great

Agreed. I just rooted mine and the whole rooting process didn't gave me any loss of data. All apps and everything stays the same. So in future if we flash the update, it should be the same
Thanks btw!

Hi. I backed up my phone using the backup method found here: http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/28296/full-backup-of-non-rooted-devices
This method uses CMD and creates an android backup file (.ab) I want to unlock my bootloader and add the custom clockwork recovery. Of course unlocking the bootloader wipes everything. So if i were to restore everything with the .ab file, then do the custom recovey with the superuser thing, would that give me root, and would all of my apps and data be restored as they are right now?
Probably a stupid question, but i want to be completely 100% sure i won't mess up my phone. I know its going to void warranty, which would be a problem if i dropped it of course
Thanks
It should work yes, you can also backup apps with an app called carbon. Free in the playstore.
Then unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery and make a backup of the stock rom in there right away too (needed when you want to go back to full stock for future updates) its called a nandroid backup.
Then root it and restore, or install a brand new custom already rooted rom
Thanks a lot
If it was a custom rom i chose to install, will it still restore? or would it need to be the original stock for the restore to work properly?

Afaik know you can restore apps on any rom with carbon. Watch out with restoring system data, it can crash the rom.
Because some custom roms have more changes and if you restore system parts it will break the rom. But apps should not be a problem. The most important thing is that you do a nandroid backup of the stock rom. The rest is easy to setup new in the worst case.
Brilliant. Thanks for the help, much apreciated.
Was half expecting an answer like that, i think i will give root stock a go, then probably when HTC stop updating i will be very tempted to give a custom a go.
Cheers
I have unlocked the bootloader, i think i have flashed the recovery, downloaded nandroid and still says i need root, so i downloaded the superuser thing and when i try to install the binary thing it says there is an error. Anything i can do?
Update: I have learnt Its all good now.
Good mate ! Have fun with your rooted phone
CASE CLOSED !
Hi, first time with a rooted Samsung here.
With the 4.2.2 update being right around the corner, I want to know what precautions I have to take before hitting that shiny update button.
I plan on updating by downloading the FW and then flashing it with Mobile Odin, thereby preserving root.
Current state of my phone:
Rooted, with stock recovery and kernel. Model is GT-N7105
I have the Xposed framework 2.1.3 with these mods installed
I have BusyBox installed
I am using SuperSU Pro
In Triangle Away, I have set the 'allow tracker to run' feature to on, since it resets my system status in both bootloader and settings!
Yeah, that's about all I can think of that messes with the system.
Also, bonus question:
When choosing EverRoot in Mobile Odin, should I choose to inject SuperSU too? Or is that option for people who are wiping their phones during the update?
Thanks in advance!
Bump! Nobody? Really?

Make a backup of the entire rom if not backup your EFS

Yeah you have to check this option and also EverRoot if you have the Pro version to keep root access.

EFS? Also, do I have to remove Xposed and such before updating? How do I backup my ROM without a custom recovery?

EFS = Encrypting File System. you can backup your ROM in your External SD card, if you save your ROM in internal SD, you may run a chance losing it when try to do a full wipe. CMIIW

What if I use something like Orange Backup to back it up? Will that be safe to restore if I don't have CWM while the backup was performed?
im stock rom zva, rooted, cwm recovery
can i flash stock recovery without loosing all my data?
or does that mean i have to flash a total stock image and go back to like when it came out of the box?
i dont mind loosing root for a while with the new update, and i know you can update with the other recovery. i just went with cwm cuz im used to it from every other phone ive had

You would have to flash stock recovery and unroot, but it is always recommended to do a factory reset after an OTA update anyway, as you may experience issues. The easiest way is to make a backup with titanium and copy all necessary files to your PC, then flash the ZVC tot using LG flash tools. Root after this with ioroot25 and restore your files and data with TBU. Keep that backup on your PC as you never know when you'll need it. You'll have a reliable update this way and minimize or eliminate any update problems.

It does, sms/mms will be in yellow and there are 2 options, select the one that says XML and you will be in business when you restore them.
Edit: By 2 options, I mean don't confuse it with "Messaging" app. Been there done that.

Hi everyone,
I guess I need some help... I'm on rooted stock and recently had to install busybox (for recovering my accidentally deleted image folder ). Now when I try to install the current OTA update, it says "/system/xbin/nc has unexpected contents" and won't let me install the update. /system/xbin/nc is actually not existing currently (removed all the busybox links, just kept the busybox binary). Don't know if it was there before I installed busybox.
I tried to download and unpack a TWRP nandroid backup of my current software version in an attempt to find and restore any file possibly overwritten by busybox links, but there was no /system/xbin folder in the nandroid backup.
Any ideas how I might be able to install the OTA again? I don't want to flash stock again and backup/restore all my data. There has to be a way! :highfive:
Thx

Make a nandroid of your present ROM.
Then flash only the System part of the restore from the stock nandroid.
Only the System portion!
Then see how it goes.

That actually sounds quite smart. I'm going to give it a try tonight. I never knew you could just restore the system part of a nandroid backup. I'll have to figure out how to do that.

Under Advanced, you can restore just that portion and it'll be fixed to flash the OTA without touching any data.

Hey,
I just flashed the stock ROM for Android Gingerbread 2.3.4, and I've been trying to root it. The DooMLoRD method doesn't work. Are there any other ways for me to root?

I'm aware of 2 different root methods for R800x on 2.3.4. This post should point you in the right direction:

Thanks man! It worked! Now how do I make it so if I do a system restore it automatically installs Superuser and Busybox? Thanks!

Cool man... Glad to hear you got it rooted. After you get the phone setup how you like it (including Superuser/SuperSU and busybox already installed ), then make a Nandroid backup in CWM. Keep a copy of that backup somewhere safe (like on your external sd card and an additional one on your computer), then you can always restore that Nandroid backup after wiping cache, wiping dalvik, and doing a factory reset in CWM. (Also.... If you mess the phone up really bad when tinkering with it, you can always use Androxyde's Flashtool to restore the phone to Stock.... then root it again /reinstall CWM, and restore that Nandroid backup. I can't tell you how many times I've had to do that when experimenting with different things on the phone).
I don't know of any other way to restore with a Superuser app and busybox already installed.... (other than to flash a ROM/Kernel that already includes these... but you will have to unlock your bootloader-- if not done already-- in order to flash custom kernels).
PS: check out Titanium Backup Pro from the Play Store if you're not familiar with it already... as it's a useful tool to let you backup individual apps and individual app data.

No. You have to install the Clockwork Mod Recovery separately.
This thread should help you to get it installed - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=55290171

Another way to install CWM Recovery is to use the Xparts app, (also called the CWM Auto Installer)... but you have to use an older version (v.5) for the R800x. If you'd rather use the Xparts app, then go to this thread:
Scroll to the bottom of the first post to find several versions of the app. Download and install ("CWM Installer-v5.apk").... then use the app to install CWM. I've not used this method, but others report that it works.
