i hate ads!! :( - Galaxy Tab 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I give up!
have spent the last hour plus just trying to dload cm12 and cwm recovery from different xda pages,
but there are so many ads that break up the page layout, that I cant hardly see links most of the time
....and then dloads don't work ....more ads
rant!
yeah I know its free and all
...in reality prob not xda but just my browser that is stuffed - as not using AV cause found it best with it off for adb etc

ahh...that seems better - spent ages re installing Norton and running av checks - and now when go for a dload, no ads
...don't think I could use the web without blocks

Ads being blocked

I recently installed cyanogenmod 6.1.2 and for some reason it is blocking ads without any program installed to do that. I used to have have adfree installed on other roms but that's not the case anymore and I'm trying to run an app called audiogalaxy but it wont work without ads. I guess my question is does cyanogen normally block ads and if not, what might be causing this.

This worked perfectly on my Samsung Captivate! I was trying to figure out how to stop the ad blocking and this did the trick. Thanks!

Flame-retardant suit on....
As long as a developer isn't obnoxious with ad placement, and especially if they offer an ad-free version as a choice, I really don't have a problem with ads. And in fact, I could almost consider it a form of piracy to block ads. (Extra flame resistant gel added.) The developer has decided they want to be paid for their work, and there is nothing wrong with that. Whether you download a cracked version or whether you use the ad supported version and block ads, you're preventing them from getting paid. I think ad-supported apps are a reasonable compromise. They get some compensation, and you don't have to shell out a dime.
I do have ads blocked right now, and I did it because I love Angry Birds and they made it nearly unplayable with the new ad placement, and didn't allow us the choice of an ad-free version. That just ticked me off. I actually feel bad about the other developers who aren't getting paid as a result. I'm thinking about turning it off, and/or buying the ad free versions of some of those apps. I wish I could just block ads in specific apps. I have some apps that are useful, but not so useful or frequently used that I feel like paying for an ad free version, and I'd be happy to let them get some revenue from ads when I use it.
I also don't deny that I'm completely hypocritical on this with my Tivo. I'm fast forwarding through the ads of the recorded GB/Philly game as I write this. I'm NOT passing moral judgment on anyone. If you want to block ads, that's fine. As I said, I have done it myself, but as I started to think about it more, I started to question whether it's really that different than downloading a cracked version (which I won't say I've never done either, though I've been making an effort to resist and correct lately). It's just something I thought I'd bring up in case someone hasn't thought about it from that perspective.

[Q] Avast! Lookout, Cerberus, or something else?

I had Lookout since I got my phone, then won a free premium upgrade for a year that just ended.
Avast! just came out (out of Beta) with free Antivirus which I'm using at the moment.
I've seen great reviews about Cerberus, but it costs a few bucks.
So, I'm not worried about viruses (I've read enough articles about it) but I like to have something to track, lock, and wipe the phone in case it is lost or stolen.
I'd like to see what programs you guys use or don't use and why?
I use lookout on my wife's phone, since she misplaces it at least once a week. I was using it on my phone but have stopped since I was only using it for tracking and I can wipe my phone remotely through my work exchange server if I lose it.
Try Seekdroid, it can remotely enable GPS and may be what you're looking for. Antivirus programs are pointless though.

Nothing new or old impressed(es) me if it cant find and remove the CarrierIQ rootkit. They missed it..what else will they miss
Signature and definition based av solutions are dying a slow death anyway, one last hu rahhh.. smartphone users.
AVG
You forgot to specify AVG's free antivirus solution. It doesn't require any signup, unlike Lookout, and doesn't waste space in your notification area because it only appears there when it scans, fixes, etc.

I might give that one a shot. I run AVG on my PC and it's been pretty good. I like that it doesn't take up room in the taskbar and it looks like it has the remote locate/wipe/lock that I want to have. I don't know why I didn't think to look it up before.
Update: Tried AVG, but it can't locate my phone when I tested it. (I went through all the proper steps of setting it up in the "remote" menu) So it doesn't look like it's gonna be a keeper.

Aw, that sucks. Well just a word of notice: Don't go for the Mcafee Antivirus, it's just a 7-day trial unless you pay for the subscription. It was really disappointing because I signed up and configured everything, like the Buddy List feature, which is when the app automatically sends a text to your "buddies" phone numbers when it's lost/found.
I've been using Lookout since it came out, but now I have the same doubt. For sure if you only want it for remote wipe and so, I would choose Cerberus, but I usually download apps from other stores, testing apps I can't be sure if they are completely safe, etc, so I don't know if I should keep my Lookout for malware detection or just forget the paranoia and move to Cerberus.
In my situation, what would you guys do?
I never use AntiVirus never had a problem,

Flash enabled Chrome browser?

Honestly, I tried many browsers out there, but I still love chrome, and love the little things it has. Only thing I dont like is how flash is not supported. Is there a way to get flash on Chrome, or is there no ways to get that? I tried searching for similar topics, but I couldnt find any.
If there is no way, can you recommend a browser that is like chrome, but with flash?
Stuff I like about chrome are:
1. I like how I dont lose my tabs even after closing the app (task manager) or even shutting off the phone
2. I like how chrome auto fills the url, such as if I type xd, it autofills all the url l
3. The smoothnews, and the speed.
Thank you!

Nope..there isn't. All mobile browsers do not support flash anymore. U might be able to get it on dolphin or firefox but I found it to be unreliable. It worked with some basic flash i used as a test but not for a local news site when a brush fire was going burn down my home.. Ur supposed to get the app for whatever ur trying to do with flash but obviously u cant find an app for some things like local news... so you just speed home and drive crazy the old way.
The dependency is two fold.. one is android version and the other is browser version. So if you run android 2.0 and ancient browser then you have flawless flash
BTW Opera mobile is faster than chrome and it does all those things u liked (not flash tho). I only use chrome on desktop but I test it on android with every new version. It's still slower on some sites.
Aww thats too bad I guess.
Thanks for the recommendation. Ill trybout opera

Nexus 4 Companion

Hey there,
I'm developing my first Android app for Google Play named Nexus 4 companion. Basically it includes lots of tips and tricks (about 40-50 now), tips for certain apps, guide for rooting etc.
It's currently in some Alpha version, works flawlessly but need some modifications and features before I publish it.
Anyway if you have any non-standard tips and tricks you'd like to recommend me for putting into this app, please do so.
Also after finishing the app for Nexus 4, I planned releasing bunch of apps for most Android phones.
Very nice! cant wait to try it as long as no ads

Well honestly I thought of it, and I dislike ads too (even though I don't see them, got AdAway). But I need some form of monetization.
What I thought is charging (in-app) .99$ for complete rooting guide (custom roms, kernel, recovery, root etc.), and perhaps for recommended apps adding other apps willing to pay (if there are any). Nothing intrusive tho.
That would ruin the whole thing cause as soon as people see they need to pay, they'll run to google instead.
So you'd suggest a 100% free app (without ads)? I thought to earn some extra money after releasing app for every flagship phone out there.
If you charge for full rooting instructions they will just Google it and end up here. I would put adds in. Most people will either have them blocked or simply understand the point of them and appreciate a free useful app despite the adds that pop up

Just use non-intrusive ads. Nobody minds that. Also, in main reading area don't use ads, put them in settings, categories, etc.
So, is the app up yet?
Just publish 2 versions, a free one which you can set ad-supported, and a donate version so that people who want to support you can buy it, without any restrictions on the free version. So is it up yet?

[Q] stupid question of the day, Remove google apps?

i like the factory Samsung roms after all the bloat has been removed.
but i like the aokp roms because i don't need the Google apps installed. (even more bloat IMHO)
is it possible to remove goggle apps from the Samsung base and still keep stability??
Depends on the app. If you mean removing the entire framework i would not suggest it. But if you just mean google books and stuff like that then you can just freeze it with TiBU
I would like to remove as much as possible. Google play Google services Google sync Google maps Google everything etc.
If I could find a comprehensive list that explained what every Google app was in the rom I would start freezing things and see what happens. But with out that list I'll have force closes everywhere and I'll never be sure what may be causing it.
Can be done....
Look on the CM website and search for "barebones" lists of application removal..
Basically CM did the leg work for us in determining to what level a device can be stripped and still function...
A few years ago I was running CM builds on the Aria at just over 56 meg.. and they were fast...
I used winrar to drop out the APKs as the rom didn't need resigning after the removal...but with our current recoveries and the ability to ignore signature verification at the recovery level anyway...I'm sure several other methods will work...
I briefly browsed through the barebones lists before typing this...and noticed that several areas are under construction...but lists do exist to remove complete packages up to the 10.1 level...
Just keep a good nandroid backup handy...
Happy application dumping....g

It'll work. ..and it's a lot of fun seeing the bloat go away. .
Those stripped roms fly. .
And with so little on the device. ..it's likely you'll only have 1 application screen. ..
Sweet. ...g
