[Q] Low Internal space after Lollipop update - Desire 816 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After update to lollipop my HTC desire 816 dual SIM has 1.2 gb less internal memory space.Previously it has 3.95 gb internal space now only 2.75 gb.What is your experience friends?

Frustrating.Nobody wants to share how much internal space they have left after lollipop update.

I have had space issues ever since I got this phone. It's even worse when I updated to lollipop. I literally have only about 7 downloaded apps. The rest of my space is taken up by stock apps etc. I think my user apps account for 1gb.. Here's a screenie

Mine also 1gb....???

Now we can't update apps or install new apps from playstore.

Why still no move complete data to sd even after lollipop??if possibile we all can gain space..so anyone try to find the method..

Stock Apps
I'm thinking of rooting my phone to have a clear out of the stock apps because after the lollipop update I have <500mb remaining storage.
I have gone through the stock apps and calculated I can free up 300+
I was just wondering, I know HTC advises against removing stock apps but what are the actual consequences of uninstalling these apps?
Apps like Twitter and Hangouts I have no problem removing because I know exactly what they are for and will not be using them (plus if I ever change my mind they are available in the app store). It is the apps below I am unsure about:
1. Internet Browser (82mb) - I have Google Chrome installed so do not require 2 browsers.
2. Google Play Services (125mb) - I update ALL of my apps manually and do not require auto-update assistance.
3. Cloud Print, Dot View, My Google Drive, HTC Account, Push Client, HTC Guide
Are there any major consequences of removing these apps?
Thanks guys

Google Play Services does a lot more than just updating your apps, so do not uninstall it!

Can anybody give a list of the apps that can be uninstalled without troubles, I need to make room for my apps on this [email protected]#$ phone ?

I wish we could integrated updates into system apps, but it seems to never work

If you're rooted then you can disable write protection setup additional partition on SDcard and run link2SD.
If you don't want to root your phone the only option is to stop and disable the app then uninstall updates. That should save you some space and prevent the updates from downloading.

I had the same issue on my Moto E (XT1021). The update process gave a warning of what space was required but I hadn't checked. My spare space in internal memory was almost wiped out.
As a retired chap I wasn't likely to rush out and buy a new phone with more memory. I had just bought mine less than a year ago. So I looked at what I needed and how to get more memory back. This brought me to the idea of binning what Google stuff I can and installing 3rd party apps that can be moved to the SD card. I replaced the likes of Chrome, Camera, Gallery, Photo also 'removing' Drive, Books, Games, Music, Newstand, Text-to-Speech, Hangouts, Maps, Quickoffice, Street View, Talkback, Cloud Print and much of the Motorola stuff like Assist, Alert. 'removing' means uninstalling the app updates in 'Settings'
As a result I now have 700Mb free in internal memory. I'm looking to replace the supplied email and calendar apps with 3rd party stuff but many (most?) can't be moved to SD card.
PS. My phone worked fine after the update but my wife's Moto E will re-optimise after every power-up. I haven't the heart to tell her I might have to factory-reset it - not just yet
Hope the above helps!

do you have a memory card in your phone they come with a 4 GB card i have around 50 apps and about 40 books and still have 3.6GB on the card and 50% of my phone memory see if your card is in right
Homerun 3d takes 20mb anyway, pretty big.
Also if you were installing the apps while the phone was connected to the PC it may have dismounted your SD card and installed everything on the phone memory?? Just a guess.
my memory card is in right i did have 48mb free installed asphalt 5 and idracula didnt like them unistalled them now i only have 20mb so strange desire need to get rooted asap

Can you share with us how do you manage to install apps on sdcard ?
the phone is superb much better than iphone imho but just makes me angry having to factory reset every time i run out off memory hopefully gets sorted soon
Yea okay this is really annoying me now, i barely have any apps on my device besides google maps, facebook, aircontrol etc all under a couple of mb. I install raging thunder 2 which takes up more than 20mb of my internal storage and that's it, don't have room for anything else. This is REALLY stupid.
It is a massive issue for me as its a really great device, but you can only install a few apps at a time??? WTF????
It would be nice to install more than 1 3d game......
I noticed the same thing as the guys above. Can someone tell us how to install the APPs on the SD card that's in the phone??
From what I understand, apps2sd requires root access, which requires a root ;-)
funny or not, but i had more free mem to install aps on my old nokia e50 phone and all this talk about this issue here or basically on the net, it's just bad pr for google/andorid platform.
it's a lame limitation that at the end will be removed by google itself or by rooting the phone.
and for now... install astro file manager and backup unused apps on sd card. thanks to that you can have some apps installed in phone memory, ready for quick use, and many more backed up on sd card available with few clicks.

[Q] How to resolve "Low on Space" error

Hi, Noob here. I have been wrestling with a "Low on Space" error for the last couple weeks. I understand it is a partition issue, and I'm hoping there is a ROM that will resolve the issue. The phone is rooted, but otherwise stock.
I have searched, but was not able to find a post that addresses this issue, even though it seems to be a common one. Maybe I just don't know the lingo.
Could someone point me in the right direction? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Maybe someone can chime in and explain the "partition issue," I'm wondering what that is and why it would be necessary.
Low on space, Google not syncing...
I've recently been getting the "low on space" error too which has been preventing my google accounts (gmail, contacts, calendar, music) from syncing... I'd remove apps, move apps to SD, clear cache and still get the error with no syncing. I thought Twitter was the culprit so I removed that app and then everything started syncing and the error went away. At that point I then added google music beta to sync and once that finished I got the error again and google wouldn't sync. I then cleared data on google music beta and now able to sync again. I'm guessing google music is the culprit, but I thought that would just be caching to the sd card... This is really frustrating since I cannot utilize google music beta right now.
I have plenty of space available as well:
SD: 8.5 free out of 15.5
Internal: 6.2 free out of 6.6
Phone memory: 302 free out of 748.
Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
I am having the same Google sync issues as well, gdemore. It is not really a space issue, as I have plenty available:
SD: 5.2 free out of 7.5
Internal: 4.5 free out of 6.6
Phone memory: 407 free out of 748.
I have moved all apps to SD that I could, and use "1tap cache cleaner" from time to time.
I have gotten the "Low on Space" issue intermittently since the phone was new, but a reboot always made it go away until now.
Is the "Low on Space" error not a common problem on Droid Incredibles? After doing some Google searches, I thought it was. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Go to setting, applications, running and look at what apps are taking up space. Usually twitter, Google earth, Facebook. When you open so many images it caches them so you can review them with minimal loading time but at the cost of precious space. Anytime I get the error I clear data on these apps and it goes away for months, until I've viewed a ton of pictures again, hope this helps

Not for people who are chronic rom flashers because everytime the flash a new one its the same as clearing data

Clear cache/dalvik, try freeing up some memory by killing a few apps.
Thanks KKellett & dmeadows. I have tried clearing cache, killing apps, clearing data, etc.... I still have the Low on Space error. I'm going to pick a ROM to flash, hoping that will resolve the issue. Maybe getting rid of the bloatware will help.
Given that I have so much space on the phone (see above), I was hoping for a solution that didn't require constant cache clearing/app killing/data clearing, etc. I was hoping some of the ROMs would allow the phone to use more available memory for cache space than is currently allotted. IMHO i shouldn't need to micro-manage apps/cache with so much memory available.
Check your data/data and system/app directories with root explorer and see if there isn't some stuff you can get rid of.

The "low on space" error comes when the \data\data partition, limited to 150 megabytes, becomes 90% full. Deodexed ROM's tend to take up more space in that partition than odexed ROM's. Sense takes up a considerable amount of space there, as do contacts. For instance, my daughter has thousands of Google and FB contacts, and they are taking up nearly half of the space.
There are two ways I have found to "fix" the problem.
1. Using Titanium Backup Pro, be sure to re-integrate any updated apps back into the ROM (that will take their data out of the partition); and
2. Purchase NotEnoughSpace, which enables you to create a partition outside of \data\data and move the bigger space hogs out of it. I run it regularly and keep at least 40 megabytes free in \data\data to avoid the problem.

Thanks for the tip and the background knowledge hgoldner! I'll give that a shot.
I've been getting the same warning as the OP for a week or so now...
Rooted DINC, but still on stock rom. "Appears to have" plenty of space available.
There is a fix, and no it is not deleting all your apps to get it to go away.
Basically for some real dumb reason HTC has given the data/data folder 150MB of storage space and when that gets close to full you will not be able to add anymore apps to your phone. So even if you have 5+GB of space left you are stuck.
But there is an app in the market called "NotEnoughSpace" that I was a little leary on trying at first but after getting it and seeing that it works great I wanted to share this with everyone.
I was able to move Google Earth's 16MB to the partition this app created and have it work, and freed up all that space in my data/data folder.
BTW INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE:
1) Create a partition (I made a 1GB one on the phone in emmc)
2) Pick an app taking up a lot of space (like Google Earth) the app will show you how much space each app takes up in the data/data folder so you will learn why you are having an issue.
3) Click to open up the app (Inside NotEnoughSpace of course) and click all the sub directories (most apps have 4-5) and move them ALL to the partition.
That's it. And you can always move everything back if you want. But just note that if you move the app itself OR don't move every sub directory the app wont work after a reboot. Took me a few tries and multiple reboots to figure this all out but now I am good to go and freed up much space.
I had mixed results using NotEnoughSpace while reflashing ROMs and restoring my apps with Titanium. I'm a bit nervous to use it with anything I don't mind a fresh install of.
I used to have this problem all the time but since I've started flashing ROMs it hasn't been an issue. When I was running stock I would just clear the app data for my browser, facebook, and dialer (this is your text messages), usually worked.
Clearing the data for my Dialer App did the trick. Haven't had any space errors since!
Used SMS Backup+ to keep them just in case ;-)
Well, actually that's a lie. It keeps popping up at least once a month. I gotta start flashing some Roms...
I've tried cleaning everything out, but that doesn't work. Is there anyway to fix it without rooting your phone? honestly, I've never done that before, and I'm afraid I'll just trash my phone. Are all HTC phones like this?

Without rooting you can delete apps. The lib files and to a lesser extent the data files fill up /data/data partition which has a total size of 149 mb (crazy low). Netflix has a 19.3 mb lib file and and Google Earth uses 16.61 mb. Also syncing facebook can take up a lot of space in data files.
If rooted I like link2sd which allows you to create a symbolic link for the larger files to the SD card. I am using about 70 mb of the /data/data partition only moving a few big files over to SD.
If I root my phone, do I need a new ROM or can I leave Sense UI on my phone? I'd really only being rooting to fix this issue. I'm not interested in playing with other things. I don't have much of a software/programming background, and I honestly don't want to mess with it.
Thanks.

[Q] 7Mb - very low internal memory!

Hi Guys;
I bought a wildfire s (gingerbread 2.3.3 - htc sense 2.1 - software number 1.35.720.3).
I am running very low of internal memory (just 7Mb out of the original 150) also if all apps I've downloaded have been installed on SD. I have reduced the space for text messages and already cleaned the cache.
I have some suspects on the Twitter for HTCsense widget..but not sure.
My device unfortunately is S-ON, so apparently rooting is not a piece of cake.
Any suggestion on:
- how to free up internal memory
- how to get in full control of the device removing non-intersting stock apps?
Thanks a lot for your help!
Did you try App2SD?
thanks King.
Yes I've tried it already with no success; I have just one app installed in the internal memory.
I have 14MB internally dedicated to the address book which i think cannot be moved to SD.
Other apps partially allocated to internal memory are Google+ and Facebook for which i reduced at the minimum the cache.
There are stock apps which also are annoying as I do not want them but cannot remove.
Do you have an idea where the data of the widget "twitter for HTC sense" are stored?..the widget keeps in memory many tweets, and I cannot size the allocated space to it..
Wow, I've like 30-40 apps (other than stock) installed on my phone. My address book is of 13.56 MB

Thanks yaret..the method described there is for froyo..I'll try if I'll find no other options.
With no reasons I can explain today internal memory decreased at 4Mb..I delete all text messages, emails and removed Twitter account, but manage to gain only 2Mb..
I'm starting to feel frustrated,a photo app refused to work today due to low memory
Please share ideas on how to spot what's killing my phone..

Thanks alquez..just let me know if in the meantime I need to s-off my phone.
I'll also try do a factory data reset and slowly install apps one by one to understand which one is killing my phone..

[Q] Low phone memory htc desire

HI, im really sorry if this has been posted already but i did look and all i found was for other phones and not mine.
So my phone has had the low memory icon since December 31st, 2011 and has only gone away a few times. I clear the cache, took off photos, even cleared out my music and did a factory reset...all the while took off all the apps and put them back on one by one. Now my phone has decided to deny me access to my photo's, music and text messages. yesterday my internal phone memory was 10.93 and this morning it is 8.88. My sd card is 8 gigs and has 4.77 available space. I went to the telus store and the representative told me just to force stop applications running which I do that all the time and even go to the manage applications and stop the large ones. and I spoke to multiple representatives and all they would do if I sent it away would be update the software and do a factory reset. my phone wont even update any application....
please help me!!! I'm ready to throw my phone against a brick wall.
THANK YOU
MELISSA
I think that this hasn't been asked yet. Furthermore, in no case there are a billion of custom ROMS whose primary task was to circumvent this issue.

Have a look in the development section of this forum. There are custom roms (phone software) that allow apps to run from your memory card rather than the very limited phone memory. This will give you 5 times or more amount of space

Unfortunately you have to start a root and install a modded rom.
The Htc desire has this big problem. You can install apps only in the internal memory (about 520mb).
The modded roms allow you to install apps also in the SD card with (virtual) unlimited space.

Google Play Services - How to delete/remove

OK, so first things first. I am rooted and have attempted repeatedly to remove the Google Play Services apk with no luck. I have used TB to uninstall. freeze, delete. It will delete the file and or remove it but when I reboot its back and it wont go away. I have looked into the my
/data/app
folder and deleted the file from there and then removing it with TB, still whether I reboot or I wait anywhere from minutes to a coupel hours its back and as it doesnt show up under the PLAY store I cant think of any other way to remove the dang thing and its eating about 40mb of internal storage. I move it to SD and it will work for a bit, but then its back to internal storage..... I dont even use Google+ that much on my phone. I use it on my PC.

It takes only 7.92MB of internal storage for me.
You need to remove the GPlay store to remove it permanently.
Maybe if I rename the play store apk and add a .bak then reboot then remove the dang thing entirely it will be gone.
I looked and I dont know whats different with mine but its eating around 39mb on my phone.
Why would you want to remove it? This app, as far as I can remember I read, gives us "Smart Update" which lets you install and update only the updated portions of apps instead of redownloading the entire app. So... I just moved the app to my system partition using TB, then Integrate it with the ROM everytime it gets updated. Internal memory problem solved.
According to Google Play reviews, you need it for YouTube and possibly other Google services.

Sorry, but this is wrong. Smart Update is a Google Play Store feature and has nothing to do with Google Play Services.

Yeah true, since newest version.
Google Play Services is something like a replacement for older Google APIs on Android. It allows developers to use a newer version of those APIs (this "newer" version is not better in any way, but new ). Google's idea is to get more independant from hardware manufacturers and their updates. They want this APIs to be no longer part of the system to update them on their own. They started porting their Apps to the new APIs, YouTube is one of the affected apps (what means they did not add any feature but let the app work only on Android systems with Play Services installed).
Im at war with Google now. Will go Windows
Up until today I was quite happy with my ZTE T60. Then suddenly upon waking up this morning it was sluggish, the Internet was unresponsive and became a great disappointment. Then the low memory warnings started, my "market" Icon was switched to "Play Store". So into settings and application management I go. Now I notice two new applications I did not install or was I asked for permissions. One being the play store which is only a MB or so bigger than the old "market" app but now I also have this "Google play services" thats 19MB! My device only has 128M ROM. I don't have room for it and I cant get rid of it. Being that Google took over my device I have decided to boycott all Android devices. I would also like to note the same exact thing was done by Google with my Samsung GT-S5570 Galaxy mini. Whats the point of pushing store software onto devices like this that takes up all of the Rom so one couldn't download anything from the store if they wanted to? Doesn't Google realize this enormous update is not suitable for every android device on-line and why have they mandated it? Sorry Google, I used to love ya but this is the big goodbye.
I am not sure about windows phone OS but I can agree with you. Now Apple and Android are doing the same bad things than Windows for desktop did in the past.
Unfortunately on mobilephones its is even worse because by default you are not root/admintrator.

You need it for like all services by google. The google play store will just keep downloading it and putting it on your phone until the end of time. Youd probably have to re engineer the google play and other google apps to not download this app.
