[Q] Tablet is getting extremely slow - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I've had my Nexus 7 2013 for a year and a half, and two months ago I sarted noticing it sometimes gets really slow, and just today it couldn't even open some apps like Clean Master. I let some time pass and it's working more or less quickly right now, but it happens every day. Any idea what could be causing this?
I got a little bit scared it's a hardware problem ever since I saw this article: http://tinyurl.com/k2835rd

I'm using CleanROM 6.0 (Android 5.1.1) and stock kernel. I was previously using a kernel and the same still happened.
Anyways, if you didn't see it was on "My Devices" part in my signature
I'm also using TWRP if that's of any use.

Try using elementalX for Aosp and see if that helps.
If it doesnot, i suggest to try CM based rom.
Do report back if nothing helps and ill see into it in more details.

[Q] CM 7.0.3 Random Reboots Even After Clean Install

I've racked my brain and searched the forums so I'm hoping someone has some insight here. Recently my phone has become unstable...I can't do too much in a single sitting without it rebooting. I've been on CM7 for a while now and had been trying the nightlies so I thought it was maybe that or just left over garbage from the upgrades so I decided to do a clean CM7 install yesterday (factory wipe). After I got through the setup and started to download gmail (1st non-stock app) from the market my inc rebooted. I flashed Chad's latest kernel thinking maybe it was a kernel issue...still reboots.
I then decided maybe it was the battery because at times I will get into a couple of reboots back to back and then the phone turns off and vibrates three or four times. But when I get the phone booted and check the battery temp it is maybe 98F which doesn't seem to be above average based on my forum readings. I then swapped batteries with my wife (unrooted inc) and we both launched plants vs. zombies and started playing. After maybe 10 min, I got my first reboot and then another a few minutes later so I just turned the phone off...she kept playing.
Now of course I have to point out my wife works for Verizon Wireless so I'm getting extra grief for rooting my phone and she is saying that is the cause since she never has reboots. Not that I want to prove my wife wrong, I really just want a phone I can do more than make phone calls on, but someone please tell me she isn't right. My reboots only seem to happen when I've had the screen on for a while...3 hour conference calls have no issues. Can you give me suggestions of things to try to help narrow down the issue? Thanks in advance!
Phone Info:
Baseband:2.15.00.07.28
Kernel: 2.6.37.6-incredikernel-gb-04192001
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-7.0.3-Inc
Build: GRI40
I get similar problems but it happens when i am watching youtube videos or playing games, or sometimes out of nowhere. Can't figure out and it is really annoying.
Copy sd to pc, reformat sd fat32, copy stuff back to sd. Helped a friend with hers.

Thanks I'll give that a try. I did try running the phone without a card at one point and it didn't help any.
AOSP Roms, like CM, interact with the sd on boot. Don't expect aosp roms to boot without sd.....

OK, performed the the SD format last night and just got around to running apps today. Again, I tried Plants vs Zombies and after about 20 mins the phone rebooted...I had been an hour long conference call before that. The phone rebooted and got to the startup screen and then rebooted again but at least this time it finished booting which is an improvement over before. Also, thanks for the tip about AOSP roms not booting without an SD card.
I did notice yesterday when it rebooted on me, after a couple of bootloops the screen then went black and the phone vibrated 5 times. I was only on a short phone call yesterday while in my car for 10 min.
On a side note, I haven't partitioned my SD card with an app partition but I was wondering if it is necessary for moving apps to the SD? I have moved several apps to SD so I want to make sure that isn't causing an issue either.
had the same problem myself, did a clean install which didn't help, finally reinstalled 7.0, all working fine now

Thanks Snappy...I never really thought about reverting. I've give it a try later today and report back.
Alright, so last night I performed a factory wipe and installed CM 7.0. Everything went fine but as soon as the ROM loaded and I opened the market it rebooted on me. This morning I just performed another factory wipe and installed MIUI thinking maybe it might be a ROM issue, but I got the same results. As soon as I opened the market to start installing stuff it rebooted on me...I tried this twice and reboot each time the market opened. I guess next I'll try a sense rom, Skyraider maybe...I'll post back with the results.
Warranty replacement
I was having pretty much the same issue. I tried everything from countless forums for the last month and a half. Finally had to cave and get a warranty replacement. - just pointing out that it might be a hardware issue (my device ran hot w/o sd and stock OS)
If the problem is following you on multiple roms it sounds like its probably a hardware issue.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I've bounced around between various forums/posts and I think I have to agree it is probably a hardware issue. Being that I'm out of warranty, my only alternative is to upgrade or buy another Inc. Given the small pricing difference, buying another Inc versus upgrading, the logical choice seems to upgrade.
So my upgrade choices that are currently available are Inc 2, Thunderbolt, or Revolution. Another option is wait for the Bionic to come out in a few months. Any suggestions? I'm personally leaning towards the Thunderbolt...
Thanks again everyone for your help.
Well if you need to update now, I'd say the thunderbolt is probably your best choice. If you can wait, the bionic, if unlocked, looks like quite a phone, but IMHO the galaxy s2 is the phone to beat.
Have you tried getting a replacement? I suppose if you got your phone when it first came out the one year warranty might be up but it never hurts to try.

I haven't tried, but we did get the phone when they first came out last year so we are a couple of months past the one year warranty. My wife looked it up though and since we are available for an upgrade at this point the likely scenario is VZW pushing me to a new device rather than replacing my dying one.
I agree, the Galaxy S2 does look nice but since my wife works for VZW I'm kind of stuck with them.
I'm tempted to limp along until the Bionic comes out to see what it has to offer. As long as I can make calls I'll be ok...I guess Plants vs. Zombies will have to wait.
The GS2 is coming to Verizon. Not exactly sure when, there was a rumor that it'll be next month but I don't know how for sure that is.

I had to go refresh my memory on the exact GS2 specs, then I had to wipe the drool from my mouth. I haven't heard of Verizon getting it within the next couple of months so now I'm even more bummed.
I guess it will kind of depend on how long my phone holds out. The random reboots and shutdowns can be annoying and have become all too frequent if I do anything more than make a phone call...sometimes even then it shuts down.

got back to stock ROM

I rooted my phone about half a year ago, and now, finally I got back to the stock ROM. You may ask why, so here is why I initially rooted it, and then why I got back to the stock ROM.
My main reason for rooting was the extremly small sized internal storage. Even with the "stock" app2sd it was hell like fast full. Of course customizen played also a role, and I liked the ability to change like everything the way I like, but moving nearly the whole apps was the main reason.
So I finally decided to root my phone. The process was (in opposite of what I thought) really easy, especially with the help of this awesome guide and I chose "MIUI" as the first OS to try out. I really liked it, but I had some occasional crashes which I wasn't able to solve. But that wasn't the reason I got back to the stock ROM. After about 2-3 months with "MIUI" my complete phone got stock in a bootloop. Flashing the zip again wasn't succesfull, so I finally tried an older backup. This worked, but sadly all my SMS data and else got lost.
After some searching I tried out cyanogenMod. I liked it quite well, but I also got the crashes and freezes I got with MIUI, but I was able to live with it. But then, about a week ago, my phone got completly stuck in a bootloop, and instead of throwing it straight ahead into a wall, I flashed back to the stock ROM.
At first I was quite surprised how fluidly it runs, in comparision to cyanogenMod. Then I noticed, that you can't really switch between 3G and 2G data, and was afraid of getting out of energy much sooner. But the opposite happened, the battery lasts much longer than with the other two ROMs, and I hadn't had any crashes or complete freezes till yet. Also, I haven't got the great warning "Battery level 0% or lower (how is this even f*ing possible?), please connect to power source" I got on cyanogenMod, with the addition of my phone shutting down immediately afterwards.
So, long story, short: I really like the ability to root my phone and everything, and I do not regret having done it. It was a great experience, I now I know the "true" capability of android. But after all this trying out, I have to say, that I think I will now stick with the stock ROM, since it's more stable. Probably it was a hardware issue with my device, probably some kind of software bug. Maybe something of both.
just my quick thoughts, and sorry for my bad english, but it's not my native language
To each his own.
I've been using Cyanogenmod more often than any other rom and never experienced bootloops that is caused by the rom itself. It's always something I did with the rom. LOL
Well, that's also a possibility, but since I wasn't able to find the cause of it, I gave up. It was not only the bootloop, but also the quick battery draining and the complete freezes.
I understand where you are coming from... You just want it to work properly.
As for the battery, the default cm7 kernel isn't really that good compared with ManU kernel. That's the first thing I change when I flash.
Now I'm taking my stopwatch to count how long will it take for loons to start Runnymede or ICS recommendations.

Long story short??
Maybe you should publish the unedited version...could be a few volumes in that.
Also, will never go back to stock. I unrooted last year, so I could set up for S-Off, and couldn't wait to get back to a custom ROM. Slow, boring, low storage and boring.
You should use Runnymede, it's the best ROM ever!
Annddd there you have it Erklat.
haha. Funny. And necessarily runnymede
You have luck with the Battery, my phone say 15% or Lower and shutdown, if yours work down to 0%

Well, that was the problem with it...the battery showed 20 percent when it happened...
btw, the stock rom didn't solve that problem either, but at least the crashes are gone...it's still pretty weird, the battery level showed like 20% or more when it suddenly shut down...
Battery life has always been dreadful on the Desire no matter what ROM you use.
Now on the bootloop, Sandvold ICS Beta 0.4.4 ROM seems to be getting on well.
No bootloops whatsoever!
(Some lags and bugs may occure, but nothing you can't handle with a little bit of patience! )

[Q] Nexus 7 zigzag-like battery graph

I have been using my Nexus 7 2013 for few months and the battery is really strange.
The battery graph is often zigzag-like as attached and I really don't know where the issue is.
I have been using purity rom, franco kernel with smart cover.
I am also charging my Nexus 7 2013 with my Nexus 4 charger and external powerbank.
Is this a battery problem and should I get it back to ASUS for warranty?
Thanks everyone
If it hasent been doing this long i would give it a week or two and if its still doing it, then i would be concerned. But i also think that some custom kernels may also have this side effect, i dont know why, maybe someone more with more knowledge of kernels could clear this up. Atleast. I hope... Mine does this aswell, but i dont stay on the same rom for more than a week or two ?

I am not sure why this happen and my first thought is battery issue.
I am lazy to try out different roms and kernels unless this issue persists.
Id go through a few full cycles, it does this to me on glitch kernel, but i tryed stock rooted rom the other day and noticed it wasnt happening anymore.
Edit: just looked at the graph again. Looks like you werent even using the tablet at all. If thats the case then im afraid this might be bad. Sorry friend.
But i wouldnt get too worried just yet, give it a few days, if it doesnt settle down or stock does the same then id think about a warranty.

Thanks very much and I may observe it for another week.
I have the exact same issue with my Nexus7. Rooted stockrom and it is zigzaging also. But batterylife is still very good, now its been up 2days and 12 hours with screen time over 5 hours. So im not going to send my own into warranty just yet, because every other common known problem is not on my device
I have stock rom , not rooted and I get the zig zag battery also. No problem tho, I am very happy with the battery life .

Spontaneous Reboot Syndrome?

Does your device suffer from SRS (spontaneous reboot syndrome)?
This one is strange and I can't say it wasn't happening before the latest update (to 4.4.2). Before 4.4.2 I was not yet a CUCS sufferer (Compulsive Uptime Checker Syndrome).
However last night I was reading a book with my tablet next to me when it made its booting chime and this made me pause. Placing a bookmark in the latest Dresden novel I picked up my tablet and saw the LG logo. It rebooted for apparently no reason. So now I suffer from CUCS (Compulsive Uptime Checker Syndrome). Trying to see if the device is rebooting at odd times throughout the day.
So if all of you running stock 4.4.2 could periodically check your uptime as well so we can collectively determine if it is just my device that is doing this, I'd appreciate the help...
So far my uptime is still climbing and I'm now over 24 hours. If it does continue to spontaneously reboot I will probably start with a factory reset
So you want others to suffer your fate of becoming a CUCS sufferer....?!

Laughs, no, but it is the only way I could come up with to check if it was rebooting when it wasn't being used... So I apologize if you too end up with CUCS!

Glad you found it funny, that was the second goal of my post the first being trying to see if anyone else had noticed the device seemingly rebooting for no reason. It has not happened again (yet). I guess my CUCS must be in remission since I didn't check uptime before I left for work this morning...
FWIW I noticed that mine had uptime of almost a week, until I rebooted it last night after I rooted it.
It might have been influenced from your Dresden book, as Jim Butcher paints such a vivid picture spurious magic is known to flow from the pages. I would contact the white council if it should happen again.
Well, I shut my G Pad down almost every night when I charge it, so I'm probably not the best judge. That being said, my Pad is on for 14 or 15 hours a day, and I've almost never had a spontaneous reboot.

I never shut mine down. For one thing in standby, without being plugged in, I do not see even 1% battery drain after 8 hours, so really see no reason to shut it down.

I've seen probably a dozen reboots since I bought my gpad in December. Considering that I have tried every rom that has been produced for us and the fact I have settled firstly on CM11 Nightlies and now Infecteds CM11 Nightlies, I have to say I'm more than happy.
Especially when you take into account I tested both Demetris gpe rom and Kernel for him.
I've had a couple in the last week or so but again I am on Nightlies so I go into it expecting the odd issue.

I had my first spontaneous reboot last night since I bought it a few months ago. I dont know how long since I last rebooted it, but I know its been a while. Im on stock unrooted KK.
I can confirm at the very least that a spontaneous reboot for me does appear to be quite rare. Thanks to all who at least looked at their up-time as part of this and hopefully this syndrome has no long term lasting effects on us all! Enjoy the upcoming weekend!

Touch Issues

I've had my nexus for a while now and as much as I enjoy using it there is a really big issue that keeps coming back. The touch sensitivity on my screen is terrible. It won't recognize half of my touches from time to time and its really frustrating. I have tried fixing it using the ts files and will work for a while then it will start with its issues again.
I also flashed almost every ROM I could think of trying to see if i t fixed the issue however it did not. I always flashed the unlock for the ts after so it would not stick in the new Roms hoping that it would get better. I have also done a full factory reset and wipe without any luck. Currently I'm running Android L lpv81( the second release) and I'm not ropted. I was using 4.4.4 with twrp earlier but it doesn't matter as long as I can get this touch issue fixed.
I looked around the forum for a while and used every fix I could find but none lasted long enough for me to enjoy it. I would really appreciate any help with this, I'm not afraid to mess around with some things to fix this issue.
My stock one year old Nexus will also occasionally not respond to my touch. Not enough to be really annoying.
