Hi,
I need the spelling checker as shown in the picture. on my ze551ml it does not work. German dictionary I have installed.
Is this a Android 5.0 problem or a ASUS Firmware problem ?
That's a bit difficult to achieve. San Francisco is probably in the English dictionary, but the rest of whatever you write won't be. I'd recommend searching for another keyboard that lets you write simultaneously in two languages (like SwiftKey, but I'm not sure it supports German), or add those corrections as they happen using your default keyboard.
Hi
Did you manage to get the spell checker working?
I'm on latest firmware and can't see the Spell Checker option under Settings->Language & Input
Jut adding a picture of missing Spell Checker on my Zenphone2
Can somebody on 2.18.40.12 firmware let me know is spell checker is there?
-Since you are using Google keyboard go to Settings/Language & Keyboard/Google Keyboard/Text correction/Auto-correction - switch on
-If using ASUS keyboard go to Settings/Language & input/ASUS Keyboard/Advance Settings/Auto-correction/Off, Low or High
Sincerely,
ASUS_USA
Thanx ASUS_USA for your reply.
Unfortunately i'm after spell checker option - where you misspell a word it should underline it in red (as shown on fist post picture)
Your suggestion was to switch on the auto correction which is different.
For some reason ASUS removed this option for Zenfone 2.
@Asus_USA this is the Auto Correct and not the Spell Checker we search for.
AOSP Spell Checker
Does anyone has a solution already on this issue?
Solved! Spell check finally enabled on Asus Zenfone 2!
Found a solution! Install MaxieKeyboard by Andraes Komninos from the play store, open it, go past the first page (You don't need to click accept to the statistical information junk), don't bother enabling or selecting the keyboard, what we're interested in here is the very nifty 'Enable Spellchecker' button, which on the Zenfone 2 brings up the menu you cannot access from the default settings app! Spell checker can be enabled from there, and google spell checker can be selected (Or whichever spell checker you prefer). I would recommend keeping MaxieKeyboard installed for later access to this settings panel, but personally I don't plan to enable it. I like my current keyboard, just wanted spell check.

Hello everyone,
I just got my HTC Desire, and I've been looking around at all of the cool things I can do with it. Unfortunately, I'm not the most technically savvy when it comes to these kinds of things.
I understand that if I truly want to unlock the power of my phone, I need to root it. I'm not exactly sure how to do that. I found a guide on this website that explains how, of course, but I'm not sure if my phone is a candidate for such an operation.
For instance, to get my build number I need to go to the 'About phone' section and find the RC number. However, when I look at my build number on my phone, I don't see 'RC' anywhere.
I just got the phone, so I assume everything on it is as up to factory date as possible...
Firmware version 2.1 update 1
Kernel version 2.6.29
Build number 1.18
Software number 1.18
Any information at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. I'm using the guide located here...
[edit]I tried to post the link, but as a new user I am unable to...[/edit]
Also, I know this is a silly question, but how do I make the keyboard appear when typing? I did it once, and am not sure how. I would, of course, read the manual for such a trivial thing, but I live in Japan, and only have a second grader's kanji reading ability. Thanks.
First of all good luck with the new phone
For the root part, the phone is quite good by itself, and after you recieve the official update to froyo, most of the earlier reasons for rooting is eliminated.
If you want to root it, you should understand, that there is allways a risk of breaking it even though it is very small.
The things you could gain from rooting is access to some special apps like screenshot apps, and special backup programs, which can backup far more, than non root apps. The most interesting part though is the custom roms with custom themes, which is only available with root.
If you want to root, you should try using unrevoked, which makes it very easy. You should read more about it in the forum though, to see, if your phone i compatible with the current version.
Btw. the keyboard should appear when you touch a box with text input.
I see. Thank you for the useful information. When can I update to froyo? I've read a little bit about it here and there, but I don't really know much about it.
And when you say "custom ROMs with custome themes," what do you mean? What kind of ROMs? When/If I get Froyo, will I be able to use custom ROMs, or will that only be possible on a rooted phone?
And when I touch a box with text input, a keypad shows up... not a keyboard. Like I said, I got it to come up once, but I have NO idea how. I've tried to recreate the situation (by just randomly hitting buttons/parts of the screen), but I have yet to reproduce the keyboard. Like I said, by default, a keypad just shows up.
Thanks again!
@Keypad/board thing
Go to settings -> language & keyboard -> touch input
and check if your keyboard is set to QWERTZ or QWERTY depending on your location
Most of us have got the official update, but i don't know, if it is delayed in asia or something. Try searching for new updates:
settings ->about phone ->System software update -> check now
About custom roms, those are for root users only as i said before.
About the keyboard, i am not sure, if i get you right. When you touch the textbox, the keyboard app opens. If you mean you want full qwerty keyboard, it is changed in settings:
settings ->Language and keyboard ->Touch input ->keyboard types
Rooting and custom rom is much more than theme customization. It allows the phone to do exactly what u want it to be: install apps to SD (on ext3), move cache to SD, set cpu clock for longer battery life, hack the keyboard, etc.
Spend some time searching how to do it
from my Desire + XDA App
Thanks guys for the responses.
I tried to update, but it says that my phone is currently up to date, so maybe there is a delay in the Asian market. No big deal... I can wait.
And as far as the keyboard goes, yes, I'm saying that I can't figure out how to get the QWERTY keyboard to show up. All I can get is a keypad, like on your home telephone.
When I go to settings -> Language and keyboard I only have the ability to select the language (English or 日本語), or iWnn IME.
In the iWnn IME selection, there is no option anywhere to change to a QWERTY keyboard. I got it to come up once, though... so I know it's possible, at least.
I think I'm just going to go back to the store and ask the employees if they can help a bakana gaijin.
ありがとう

AppFinder update is in the marketplace!
v1.1 includes a Hot list, New list and Best list. Apps can be filtered to show only free apps.
The apps list shows developer, price, ratings and rank. The lists show the top 1000 apps in each category making browsing hot, new and best apps simple and fast.
When selecting an app from the list, pressing back from the marketplace page will return you to where you were in the app list.
As usual, the app list is displayed nearly instantly as you type, and in the app list there is no waiting for additional results to load as you scroll through the results.
Images are NOT included - I wanted to keep the display and information access absolutely as quick as possible and have traded off loading images.
Please give it a try and let me know what you think
Very nice. Runs smooth and results are displayed quickly. Nicely done. I've rated and reviewed for you too.
Only extra thing that i'd like to see (don't know if it's possible) would be a "highest rated" list that shows apps sorted by rating highest to lowest.
The "best" apps list attempts to order by highest rated.
The main problem is that a 5 star app with 1 rating probably should not out rank a 4 star app with 20 ratings. Best apps uses an algorithm to order apps based on the star rating and rating count.
Hi ebadger,
After this update I don't get any search box. When I start the app I first see a triangle for a second, then I see the search box flash for a split sec. After that I just see a black screen with 6 blinking white dots, like if it is loading. I see the menu too, but it does not matter what ever I choose.
I'm on a Samsung Omnia 7.
Best regards
kjw
do you see anything? the dots should only show while the local data structure is being populated. This should only take a few seconds. Once this completes, you should be able to press on the flames button and see a list of apps. Is this not working?
If not, try uninstalling and reinstalling - sorry for any inconvenience - I can make this more robust to data errors. I'm wondering if perhaps the download is interrupted or corrupted.
ack!
Ok, so it turns out that the behavior of float.Parse is different with German locale.
I just booted my device with German UI language and I can repro in the debugger - luckily it can be fixed with a data update.
I have now updated the data file. Unfortunately you will have to uninstall and reinstall to make it work.
I was trimming leading 0's on prices (i.e. sending .99 instead of 0.99) float.Parse works in English but not in German. Anyway, leading zeros are back.
I'm really sorry for the inconvenience to the German users!
works better and hasn't crashed on me so I will edit my prev. ranking and give it 5 stars. Works great.

First of all I did a reisntall of appfinder.
Then I tried to switch to english locale and now appfinder started to work!
But when switching back to Swedish (since I live in Sweden) locale appfinder hangs on the loading dots screen.
So there might be issues with other locales too?
Cheers

I think so. I have also seen reports of this problem with French now as well.
I have updated the data file. Would you try uninstalling and reinstalling again and see if it's working with your locale?

Uninstalled, restarted, installed. But it's a no go, sorry. Same dots...
Have you tried debugging in other locales (swedish for example)?
Cheers
Kjw
crud.
Ok, so there is definitely still an issue.
Any locale that uses the "," as a decimal seperator will cause an exception while loading.
I am converting the data to use scientific notation to work around -- the fix will be a little bit tricky. I think you'll have to switch your locale to english for the first boot - once the updated data file has been downloaded you can switch back to swedish and it should work. ugh!
Well, it looks like I definitely need to do another update to fix this particular problem.
Uninstalled, switch to english locale -> reboot, install. Now appfinder works great.
Switch to swedish locale -> reboot. Now I'm back to the loading dots in Appfinder, not working.
I don't really know what you are doing in the app that is locale dependant, but maybe it could be done in a more generic way? Like convert locale dependent data to english format, do your thing, and then convert back to current locale settings. And try to avoid converting different datatypes to text if it's not relly needed, a decimal variable is not locale dependant until converted to text... Just a thought...
Thanks for your effort, though!
Cheers
kjw,
Ok, I have been debugging in Swedish today. I have updated the data file such that it doesn't use the locale specific delimiter for floating points. I have converted the data over to use scientific notation instead. It's really a simple code fix as I can specify the locale settings to use when parsing - my mistake. I have confirmed that with the new data format (just uploaded), the steps:
1) uninstall
2) switch to English locale
3) run appfinder - wait for the dots
4) wait for the dots again
5) switch locale to Swedish forcing reboot
6) launch AppFinder
this will fix it such that it should just work with Swedish locale.
I'm sorry about the inconvenience - I'm working on an update now to fix this and other issues.
Eric
After following your steps it works in swedish locale!
Great work!
Thanks,
kjw
I have tried several different keyboards that include spellcheckers and have been unable to see predictions and spelling suggestions. Since the Nook was not sold as a full android device it's very possible B&N left the necessary files out of the system. Can someone here let me know what files I would need to add to be able to use the spell check function? I've tried with several different keyboards and have installed their respective dictionaries so I believe it's not an app issue but a system issue. Thanks again everybody. Ryan
I installed SlideIt and found that word prediction works. try it. Note: I copied the apk to /system/app and used NookColor Tools to select SlideIT as my keyboard. I then had to actually execute and install the APK in order for it to show up. Once done, it works well. It takes up 1/2 of the screen, though.
Thanks I'll give it a try. I'm not sure if I was clear in my original post so let me try again. I am referring to the circled box where spelling suggestions are offered. I am unable to see the box.
Another way to do this:
- install the keyboard with ADB (and its required dictionaries),
- push all the installed APKs to the /system/app folder,
- change the APKs permissions to 644 (via shell/Root explorer/etc').
- reboot the phone, and select the keyboard through the NookColor tools.
I believe what Ryan mean is there is no word suggestion box on any keyboards installed on the nook ST. This breaks functionality of ALL 9 key keyboards and most language IME keyboards. Is there any way to restore this keyboard functionality? I also have the same problem. No keyboards which require that bar (highlighted in his attachment image) work.
I've tried:
Sougou tablet
Sougou phone
Baidu phone
Smart keyboard plus chinese
etc.
None of them display the spelling selection or character selection boxes, so this appears to be a problem with the android.
Known issue, predictions are there, however not appear. SlideIt works, but it sucks. The best keyboard, which works, is Jelly Bean Keyboard. As always you have to copy it to system/app

Thanks, it appears the only keyboards that were are back-ports of ICS and jelly bean. Possibly this is due to them including necessary dependencies that are not included on the nook? It would be great if someone could isolate the problem and make a patch.
I’ve noticed that in most development threads there are users complaining about not being able to get Google Now working correctly. I thought I’d share the steps I’ve taken to setup Google Now, and it’s been working perfectly for me.
Before we begin there are two things to clear up. Firstly, in order for Google Now to work properly you are going to need to be OK with easing off on several privacy settings. You will need to enable Web History and Location Sharing; so if you are uncomfortable with this or are a bit of a privacy nut (nothing wrong with that!) then Google Now is not for you, and will never work as intended.
Secondly, Google Now takes time to gather information about you before it will start working as you expect. This means you need to use it! Anytime you are doing a Google search from your phone, use Google Now; when you’re waiting for a bus, open Google Now, etc. After a few hours/days (depending on how much you use it) it will begin to display your Now Cards correctly.
Prerequisites:
1.A Jelly Bean custom ROM (e.g. TeamNDVRu CM10)
2.Google Now enabled (obviously)
3.Google Maps installed
4.At present Google Now will only work correctly when using English as the default language (US/UK both work)
Before using Google Now
Enable Web History:
1.We need to enable ‘Web History’ for our Google searches. From your desktop/laptop go to your Google Account settings (click your username/email address on the Google homepage and go to Account).
2.Select ‘Products’ then scroll down and select ‘Web History’. Ensure this is enabled, if paused click ‘Resume’. Web History is now enabled
Enable Location Sharing:
1.Open Latitude (found in your app drawer). Go to settings.
2.Make sure ‘Location Reporting’ is set to ‘Your location is reported automatically’
3.Make sure ‘Enable Location History’ is ticked. You can set the ‘Check In’ options as you wish, I don’t use this feature myself.
4.Open Google Maps. You should see your Latitude location centred on the screen. Click your avatar (the square pic pointing out your location). Select your name. Select ‘Location Settings from the pop-up menu.
5.Press the menu key and select ‘Change home location’ – enter your home address. Then press the menu key again and select ‘Change work location’ – enter your work location (this can also be your School/University if you want)
6.Location Sharing is now set up for Google Now
Google Now Setup:
1.Open Google Now and follow the on-screen instructions. Select ‘Yes I’m in’ when prompted.
2.Press the menu key, select ‘Settings’
3.Select ‘Now Cards’ – you can set this up as you wish, depending on what features you want to use and how you want to use them. It’s pretty self explanatory.
4.Go back and select ‘Voice’. Set language to ‘English UK’ or ‘English US’ (At present only English as default will work).
5.Select ‘Download offline speech recognition’. Go to the download tab and download ‘English UK’ language if you want to use it (US is default). – it’s a small download
6.Go back and select ‘Privacy and accounts’. Make sure ‘Location and Google Search’ + ‘Show recent searches’ + Search on google.com’ are all ticked.
7.Go back and select ‘Phone search’ – set this as you wish, if you don’t want Google Now to search your contacts for instance, then un-tick it.
8.Google Now is now setup properly, start using it!
Notes/Tips
-If you use Google Apps for Business you will need to perform an extra step. Login and go to Settings, scroll down and select Mobile. There will be a checkbox ‘Use Google Now’, make sure this is ticked.
-To have the Calendar card work properly you will need to set times and locations for your appointments/reminders. E.g. you’re doing an early shift in work, so set your appointment location to your work address, then set the times to the shift start/end times rather than ‘All Day’. The card will popup a few hours before your shift and should bring the Traffic card along with it to tell you how long it might take you t o travel/when to leave to arrive on time.
-Depending on where you live the Public Transport card may not behave as you would expect. In the area of London I live for instance, the Now Card will only show when I’m near major stations/bus stops and will not show for every single one. This may vary around the world, or even in different areas of the same city.
-Some Now Cards may never show, they are all situational (you can set the Weather to always show, but it’s the only one). It depends entirely on how you use Google Now. E.g. if you never search for your football teams results or fixtures, then the Sport Card is never going to show.
-When out and about, turn GPS/WiFi on to get a better fix on your location, helps with the Public Transport card especially.
Hopefully this gets some of you going with Google Now. Some of the steps may be superfluous but, again, this is just what worked for me after many frustrating hours of trying to figure it out!
To do: Add screenshots
Nice write up Man...Have you had any trouble with GNow adding unwanted sports teams to your cards? I can't seem to shake the LA Galaxy soccer club. I don't like soccer, much less the Galaxy.
Thanks for this mate, its awesome. I know this question may seem like I'm noob, which is because I am. I have had a little search but not sure if there is a way to get Google Now working on a sense rom on 4.0.4 such as ARHD?
Don't hate, just asking a noob question
Thanks
I can't read black on dark grey, there's not enough contrast. If you're going to set the font colour (please don't) to something, can you also set the background colour so there is some contrast? Cheers.
Perhaps I'm just missing something, but I followed these instructions to the letter and regardless, every time I open up the Google Now settings the top right on/off "switch" has defaulted back to off. Anybody having similar problems?
Good write up, thank you! Installed the new Maximus ROM last night, got a cool Google Now surprise this morning.
Looked up the web sites of two computer stores and a restaurant menu on my desktop computer. Then picked up my phone, and cards had popped up showing directions to the stores and restaurant, with travel time estimates and traffic updates. Pretty cool!
Good selection of sports teams on there now, I'll be stoked when they expand the service with more offerings.
Just installed the Maximus ROM too and used your guide to set mine up. This thing is something else. LOL. Very impressive
Is anyone having issues with sports fixtures displaying the wrong time zone on GN? I have a card for my team, but when I press the card and am directed to Google the fixture times are in US Eastern Time even though the team and I are in the UK
getting a removed card returned

Hi,
you probably swiped away the card, for that moment the card is gone, but somehow it will turn up once you open up Google Now again. if not, sometimes, a reboot of your phone will show up the card afterwards., at least, for me this helps! :good::cyclops:
Good luck mate!

Just have a minor question, hope somebody can help me with that. I was wondering if Google Now needs Auto Sync been turned on permanently. It does save me alot of battery and data usage if I can leave it off. I think personally that Google will collect information anyway wih Now because I have my location settings turned on.
Can somebody tell me??
Thanks and I wil def follow this Thread!
My tip is to disable the useless POS. All it does is rinse your battery with constant wakelocks!
Until they improve it and make it vaguely useful it will be switched off.
And ppl like me,who can't change language to English US or UK ... What we to do?! ^^

Now commands problem
I have my android system in english but i have configured google now voice recognition in spanish. The problem comes when I want a command like weather, questions, etc. Voice recognition captures correctly what I said in spanish but all it does is search for that text in Google, even if it is a command. The problem is solved when I change my voice recognition to english. Also tried to set my android system in spanish along with voice recognition in spanish and commands worked.
So my question... ¿how can i have my system and voice recognition in different languages using voice commands?
Thanks

Hi James,
sorry for my late reaction! I think it depends on if your Chrome Browser is the default browser on your device. When it is en and it's still giving you that message, I should check if it appears all the time or just when you're starting Google Now. If it does, maybe you should re install Chrome and try it again! :fingers-crossed:
Here it's working fine!
Good luck fella!

Jeroen

That's because Google Now is only configured to give you reply or a card, whenever you put the voice command in English. Other languages are not supported yet to give you a spoken answer or card. You should put everything in English and then you'll see it works. Otherwise you should wait untill they have support for voice commands in Spanish!
Good luck!

Hey, lately I was wondering to start use Google Now but there's one thing I'm worried about the battery usage, does it consume a lot of battery? Because I always get to 5% battery in the end of the day..
The drain comes from the constant location reports needed for GN to work properly. They cause enormous amount of wakes so yes, it drains.
I know I've seen a few posts on this, but I nagged Samsung support for about an hour and a half today regarding the disappearance of Page Buddy (where you can switch to a S-Pen specific page when taking the S-Pen out). Even the Settings (under Display) are missing for it. First tech support wanted me to reset from factory, I did so since I had backups, but no change. He then wanted me to send my device to Samsung for them to fix it. I wasn't going to do that.
I finally nagged enough to get his supervisor. The supervisor told me that it had been removed and that it was just the way it was. I kept arguing to get him to submit to development as there is nothing "official" that he could provide that says they removed it and they should treat it as a bug. I still have a Page Buddy Service running under the Application Manager, so that tells me that it's still there, just not running correctly. So until they have some official documentation they can provide that it was indeed removed, then it should be treated as broken. In the end, he did take my info and said he'd submit my info to the correct group to respond to it.
He told me that no one else had reported it, yet I've seen many folks complaining about it being missing. If you used it and want it fixed, please contact their support (call or online chat), can have them reference my chat number (LTK111790921725X) and ask them to fix it.
Well, page buddy service is not the same thing as page buddy. All Galaxy devices run the stupid service whether note based or not. All mine does on my S4 is tell me when I plug my headphones in. Seems rather pointless.
So I assume you are talking about the lack of the program and that you used it. Yes, it is indeed gone with 4.2.2, but you do have options. I guess it depends on what functionality you truly wanted. First step is to install S Pen Toolbox (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gmd.spentoolbox) from the play store. This gives you an app launcher which launches when the S Pen is removed and you can add / remove applications to the launcher. I've always used it as I do not use S Note (I prefer LEcture Notes instead) and it irked me that I could not remove S Note from the Sammy launcher.
The second step would be to go into settings -> Spen and check pop up note. This will over-ride the Toolbox launcher and bring up the usual pop-up note. If you don't use the pop-up note and just close it via the 'X' at the upper right corner, the Toolbox launcher will then appear.
Thanks, the S-Pen Toolbox should work for that. Just wish they would announce/confirm the removal so we don't spend time trying to figure out why it's not working.
The page buddy settings disappeared on my phone too. I was able to access them with an app called "Activity Launcher" (de.szalkowski.activitylauncher). In the app, after selecting "All activities", select "Settings". Then scroll down to "Page buddy".
Some launchers (like ADW, Nova, etc) make app activities available and may also be used to access the page buddy settings (and other hidden app features).
When I updated from 4.1 to 4.2, my setting of having the headphone/S-Pen page buddy stuff OFF was retained.
When I got my device back from RMA for a software issue, wiped and updated to back to 4.2. I have not found the setting ANYWHERE. But it is "Forced on" on my device. So if you want it on, maybe try taking backups and a factory reset or reflash the firmware.
