Will we ever see another OS update with our flagship device? - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is Samsung done? Is Lollipop ? the last operating system iteration, we'll every see? Will we ever get the rumored 5.0.3 ( that fixes the massive memory leak many users experience) after 40 hours of on time. They say it feels laggy. But a reboot of the device fixes it.. Well, until the memory leak makes it lag again.
I myself, don't experience such lag. Any of you? Anyway, not to get off topic, is Samsung done with us?

Who knows, the way Samsung rolls out its updates seems a complicated state of affairs, with all the different versions etc they release and the amount of messing they do with the original release.
Whereas HTC release timely updates for devices that are not even flagships Samsung seems to forget it's older devices. However the way HTC release updates is much more sensible. The international and developer gets it first then the carrier versions come out and they are quick with it too.

You're joking, HTC rolled out lollipop for the m8 and m7 ages ago with an update to 5.1 due in August.

I wonder if Samsung, aware of the memory leak on the 5.0.2 iteration, fixed it on their own? I don't experience the lag at all. Does anyone else?

I agree, I have the HTC One M8 on 5.1 GPE for a while and I had to sideload 5.02 for the tab pro S as I had no idea when I was going to be able to get it in the UK. Samsung really need to sort it out as they will lose a lot of sales. Their after sales service in my experience is useless.

I'm thinking that Samsung will be done with us since the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 2 is coming in June ? ?

This is why I really don't care for yearly revisions to devices.

Another good question is will our version OS the Tab S ever see an Android-M release which is mentioned in today's news about the next Google IO? I'm getting my Tab S today but coming from a Nexus 10 running Lollipop 5.1.1 and will miss the ability to rapidly install the latest OS revisions that I could with a Nexus device.

Going by Samsungs history, I'm going to say no. We didn't see lollipop ? until March. That's almost 7 months after its release. Our Samsung Galaxy Tab S was released in June. The new Tab S is going to be out in June.
Now, the OS Android-M will probably see a September rollout as well. So the Tab S 2 should probably see an update in March again of 2016.
I can't see Samsung updating Android-M for us, is in 2016.

Samsung typically supports devices for 2 years, I don't see how Android M won't be available for us.

I had a Galaxy Tab 8.9 before this one (an S 8.4). Released about 3.5-4 years ago. That one IIRC was released (in some early markets) with 3.1, upgraded fairly quickly to 3.2. And after a good wait to 4.0.4. (roughly around the time the successor came out). After that, there was similar hoping and praying on the xda forum. But no upgrades from Samsung.
Honestly, I don't expect we will see an official 5.1. But I'm willing to bet we'll never see Android M from Samsung.
I don't know the sales figures of the Tab S, but it will probably pale in comparison to the flagship phones, which are the only ones to have reasonable (*) hope for 2 major upgrades.
Just my 2 cents
Edit:
(*) based on past evidence.
it's a pity, really, seeing how the tab S was such a jump forward in specs, compared to the Tab 2, 3, 4. You'd almost hope for a "miracle" after all.

The amazon phone just got upgraded to .... Kit Kat. So it could be a lot worse.

LOL

I had the Tab 7.7 before this. It started its life with 3.2, went through ICS and ended its life under JB 4.1.2.It sold much less than the two Tab S models combined. I believe we should expect at least one more major update, as my (admittedly small) sample of flagship Samsung devices all went through at least two major updates (P6800, I9100 and I9300).

Guys, just that you are clear, samsung (touchwiz) based roms don't face any memory leak problem. Only aosp ones

Very true. The memory leak was an issue with boot animation or some sort with google/aosp roms. Samsung uses qmg and bunch of other things which isn't affected.

Lollipop is still somewhat modern, so I don't mind using it for a while, but I hope some day there will be official Cyanogen nightlies and milestone to get rid of all the Samsung bloat.

How future-proof is the Galaxy Nexus?

Hey everyone!
My qyestion is how future proof the Galaxy Nexus is. Im not talking about gaming or things like that, I just wonder if the hardware is capable of 1-2 major versions of Android and if the dualcore lasts that long?
Who knows where phones will be in the future. Many phones that were released in 2010/2011 can run ICS easily. These phones are powerful devices and will be future proof for a while. Just enjoy what you have today which is probably the best Android device to date.

Not future-proof at all.
Everybody knows that, when the aliens establish first contact this year and bring us the gift of positronic computing, our complete technology will be outdated by the factor 10.000. Your GN will be useless after this.
The Galaxy Nexus will feel like a dinosaur in 2 years. Wait a few more months for this years crop of phones to be released. Some of them already put the GN to shame.
Modern tech gets old quickly. Be happy with what you get and don't read up on any new stuff once you get it or you'll feel buyers remorse every day.
Enjoy whatever you decide to purchase
With much luck, we will have updates for longer than 2 years. My old milestone had got 1 year updates. So the nexus is relatively future-proof compared to other phones because it is directly driven with updates by Google.
The GNEX's future in this regard is great compared to all Android phones available today.
The hardware will be outdated soon.. but not so much for it to become obsolete any in the upcoming 2 years.
The GNEX's 720p screen will hold out a long time, probably will be topped after the GS III is released. staying the 2nd best for a long time.
The softkeys design, i'm not sure how or if other Android will follow such design soon. But it's kind of a "futuristic" feature in the GNEX (the ultimate phone in the far future will have one hell of a bezel-less screen all in one piece)
Another very important thing, is the Jellybean OS.
Just look at how great things recently been for long time Nexus S users. They received an official ICS release before any other phone of it's age.. making the Nexus S better in some areas than newly introduced high-end Gingerbread phones. It's going to be the same with the Galaxy Nexus, probably receiving JB OS before other new phones then and reviving it's usability.
THINK of it this way. The Nexus One was super future proof. Lasted through a few different versions of Android. Started with Eclair and ended with the latest version of Gingerbread, and I'm sure there is dev work to get the thing running ICS. I'd say that like every other Nexus phone, it should last through a minimum of 2 full versions of Android. So in my theory the Galaxy Nexus should last up to at least December 2013 - January 2014, if not longer. Then again technology doubles every 2 years so maybe it might be the end of the road once Dec 2013 rolls around when the letter "K" Android operating system expects to launch.
just what i was gonna say! the Nexus One lasted 2.1 to 2.3 flawlessly! 3 total android versions (and i bet ICS will work just as good on it when its ready)....the Nexus S was 2.3 and now 4.0......ICS is for dual core phones but the Nexus S still runs it super nicely! I have no doubt it be running the "J" software flawlessly as well! the Galaxy Nexus should last a good 2 years! that is why Nexus phones are the way to go, in my opinion......none of this "ill wait for the next phone" BS that people keep putting themselves thru! U can have your quad core bullshi*, but without the software, it wont matter!
The answer is none of them are future proof.
It should hold up perfectly find and have excellent developer support for at least the next 2 years. More than most other general release phones. Considering most of the good stuff (Galaxy 3) wont' be released state side until fall if we are lucky the nexus will be top dog for a long time.
Why not put it this way... the screen and/or plastic casing are more likely to go before the Galaxy Nexus cannot be supported in a future OS update.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Hardware, no of course not. No hardware is future proof.
Firmware, not only will we get the newest Android versions, we will get it FIRST.
Last year I told my cousin to buy a Nexus S, she was always happy with it. She is NOT a phone geek like we are.. So ICS gets pushed ota to her in Dec2011 (Nexus S got first ICS ota of any phone), I call her and say "expect to recieve a big update to your phone soon" she says back to me, "I already got it, it's like I have a BRAND NEW PHONE!!" end of story.
Google itself said all phones will get updates till 18 mo. Whether it gets crapped up by carrier OEM policies or not,but a stock Google phone will get full updates for at least 18 mos. After that,it remains usable for another 18 months. For example, the Droid, hero & g1 still run fine. Yes you can't play shadowgun or gta on them, but they do run fine. So its fine for 3 years usually. Unless you are a phone fanatic. I know I am.

Well all know that the whole 18 month thing is a sham. LG and many other manufacturers signed that agreement. You do not think they're actually gonna update the G2x a "Google experience" phone, do you? They couldn't even get a proper Gingerbread build; it was still running a Froyo kernel.

Petition for google to update to 4.4

http://www.change.org/petitions/google-update-the-galaxy-nexus-with-android-4-4-kitkat
18 Months = 1.5 Years
The iPhone 4 was released at 2010 and was upgraded to iOS7 2013
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus was released at 2011 1 year after the iPhone 4
Apple: Continues Support till end of iOS7
Google : Drops support @ Android 4.3
Whats up with that?
The Nexus has the specs to run the new Android 4.4
so does the iPhone 4 Running iOS7
All this talk about Updates is giving me a pain in the ass, it seems like now Apple is the better route?
Whats even better is the Nexus S was released @ 2010
Lets take a look @ google's reason for not updating
Galaxy Nexus, which first launched two years ago, falls outside of the 18-month update window when Google and others traditionally update devices... Okay, lets look @ the current version the Nexus s has OTA (4.1.2 Jellybean)

It's not yet known to a lot of people, but Texas Instruments has now updated* the GPU binaries for the Galaxy Nexus. This is a great message to all Galaxy Nexus users because this means it has not been dropped by TI as a rumor originating from engadget had suggested.

Tbh it's not going to happen. Perhaps Google was intended to be the White Knight compared to the evil fruit. But sadly the hardware limitation stops it from progressive advancement. The core can't handle the new OpenGL3.0 which is probably going to be their main focus on KEYLIME. I'm just guessing at this point that there are new CPU with the same price range that can do double the workload.

Thanks for the efforts though.

Theres still a chance it would there are 4.4 Roms running smoothly on it so there isn't a reason for an official ota from google
Hey guys!
As all of you, I got really disappointed when Google said that our great Nexus wouldn't be updated, and at that time, I really had no hope about the customs and this hardware limitations, but nowadays, I feel the devs are doing an amazing job and the roms are pretty good to dailly use.
I flashed CM11 yesterday and all my frustation has gone... It's almost near perfection, even in "alpha stages"...
I'm not saying that I don't support an official update, but considering that Google doesn't like "us" anymore, let the devs keep going on their fantastic work.
Bye!
I've signed it. But the most important thing is we have a great developer on custom rom

Once again, I'm at a loss to understand your post, but consider this: the plethora of 4.4 roms that are being offered right now for us are running more smoothly than those phones currently running otas from Google.
And owning a developer phone doesn't mean you must be a developer yourself. What it means is simply that we get to enjoy the multitude of talented folks who create awesomeness for our phone.
I'm not against your petition by any means, but I think you need a dose of reality, which is that 1) it won't happen and 2) we don't need it.

My first Android was Motorola Milestone XT720, first phone with an 8mpl camera, all reviews were misleading and the phone was a total flop. Got the phone cause it was my local carriers top phone and it was free. It was the first petition I had seen sparked by dropped support. Moto and my carrier both promised the upgrade to Froyo! Lmao. There were thousands and thousands of signatures I believe but it did not matter to Moto. Cincinnati Bell Wireless did a gracious thing and Kanged a ROM from here and made it their official update to make good on their promise but as far as I know, no petition has ever got any attention. Since then I went with Nexus S and to the Galaxy Nexus cause I never wanted to go through that again! The dreaded XT720 is still stuck on Eclair, never received even one official update! And it was a $500 phone! Cannot believe how they got away with that sham but they did I guess. I would say everyone vowed to never buy a Motorola again! Anyhoo it's always nice to have the official update cause out of all me non-Nexus phones it seems ported ROM's of latest Android always have the pesky little bugs that never get fixed. It seems we hang on and on, refreshing Development threads daily looking for an update to a miracle and it just never quite happens. Now here we are with our beloved Nexus, thinking we were gonna see Key Lime Pie and out from nowhere comes KitKat and we get tossed like dirty underwear! LMAO! Never imagined a petition for a Nexus! But the great thing that separates us from all of the other petitions... is we got the best Dev's in the business working hard for us on a phone with an unlocked bootloader made for this exact thing! Getting the latest and greatest custom ROM's without worry!
We need to start demanding removable batteries and SDCards on all new devices! Stop buying the built in battery/cloud storage NSA spy grid phones! We are allowing Google to take over the world! Lol.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE BE THANKFUL WE ARE BLESSED WITH THE NEXUS EXPERIENCE! I AM THANKFUL FOR XDA AND EVERYONE IN THIS GREAT COMMUNITY! (Sorry for the long rant I feel better now thank you)

All US carriers' S3 have a Snapdragon S4 (MSM8960) CPU which is still being actively used in many mid-to-high-range phones, and is highly consistent with newer Snapdragons in terms of architecture (makes porting ROMs and kernels easier)
Ours has an OMAP4xxx which got abandoned by its own manufacturer despite its success...

People buy Nexus for the huge development community it has, its not even been a month since the kitkat was released and we already have perfect working ROM's. Just flash them and enjoy, instead of protesting to get what we have already have.
Just my thoughts.

Note 4 android L

Anyone heard anything about the note 4 getting the android L update?
This is all hypothetical but should be soon, they have been releasing build videos on their youtube channel with progress on the S4, S5 etc. The Moto X and G3 I think just got the update and I'd imagine Samsung is hot on their tail. Lets hope soon!
I read early 2015
No phone has received Lollipop yet, except the Nexus 6 - previews of it are popping up on different devices (G3, MotoX, S5, etc) - they haven't been released to the public yet - I would expect that they need more time to test the software.

You know we'll get 5.0. You also know Verizon will be among the last, and it'll be everywhere by then.
When i had s4 verizon pushed 4.3 i think quickly due to galaxy gear watch and lolipop seems important update all phone makers are jumping onto updating the phones.

I agree that Verizon's overall track record has been horrible with timely updates, but over the past year, they've released updates to some of the latest flagships much quicker than in the past. For instance, the Verizon S5 was one of the first anywhere to get an update to 4.4.4, even before the unlocked international version.
OS updates are the same as always...a couple of months after then International device gets it depending on carrier. So watch the International Note 4 forum for when they start getting OTA and then you know you only have a few months to wait.

Couple quick 5.0 questions

When are we expecting this to drop for our device? Ready for our device to be more snappy as my old n5 with 5.0 is much faster than my Note 4.
Is there going to be an development for this device in time? I know it is tough for some Devs to get their hands on these phones so I didn't know if that was why there is basically nothing, or if there is some other reason.

There's several reasons for the lack of dev's for our Sprint Note 4 and that has been discussed already here in the forum. The speed difference between the Note 4 and the Nexus 5 could very well be due to the lack of software overlay and features on the Nexus device compared to the Note 4 which leaves plenty of processing/memory resources available to run a much lighter software. This is a given. But in reality I don't see much any lag on the Note 4 so I'm perfectly fine with it. I would literally get depressed and panic if I had a vanilla Nexus device because I've come to love all the features and advantages of the Note series phones. It's a good thing we have a choice in the Android world!

My guess is middle of february.
So outside of the material design language and project Volta (think I got that right), what else are we missing from 5.0?
IMO...feels like another push just to get the latest version of Android but due to TW, I don't think we'll see much difference.
Judging from what I have seen on my old n5 as far as the difference in responsiveness and snappiness, this will be a huge update, TW or not. 5.0 is about twice as smooth as 4.4.4 on my n5.
Fair. I was rocking the developer preview on my N5 before I got rid of it.
Just as others have said, Ive read the same on sam mobile early 2015.
and by then Google will announce Android 5.5 Lolita

Are we getting Android M 6.0?

Are we getting Android M 6.0?
i hope so , but for now im hoping and dreaming for 5.1.1 tbh where a lot of bugs are fixed and performance is much smoother and better
I hope too, but my device can dream on this version only. I think it will be cool os but as always this one will be installed first of all on Nexus smartphones.

Where should we know? My best guess is yeah, probably.
Samsung has so much device fragmentation I highly doubt it - even if they consider this their flagship tablet they've already announced a new version of it. Plus, there's been so many deep discounts on the device lately it seems thought they move on firly quickly to the next model. I feel like Samsung doesn't have the support I've grown used to with Nexus devices :/
Plus, not being a true octa-core (I.e. it's a big.little implementation of one fast quad paired with a slower battery-friendly quad core) it doesn't seem like the tablet I thought it would be. It's still pretty awesome and I don't plan on replacing it for several years but I doubt it'll get M.
I just hope someone steps up to be an official maintainer for some of the devices with, say, cyanogenmod, so we start getting some official nightlies.
Wow, are we seriously fretting already about the next major Android update that probably won't even be available on Nexus devices before Christmas? Does anyone at XDA spend more than a few hours enjoying the device they have before worrying that they're being ignored by the manufacturer (or carrier, etc.)?
I'm starting to hate Android updates, always someone complaining about things.
Who knows what goes inside the head of Samsung engineers and managers? My personal view is that as soon as Tab S is succeeded by its 2015 replacement, which should be this summer, the 2014 Tab S won't be getting any new updates from Samsung. I personally wait for Cyanogenmod to start producing the nightlies for the T800, just like they do for T700. That would be the best upgrade path.
Samsumg always provide at least 2 years of updates in my experience. If the Tab S2 gets it, which is more than likely, the Tab S will too.

Samsung has so much device fragmentation I highly doubt it - even if they consider this their flagship tablet they've already announced a new version of it. I am with you on that, totally. Samsung is pushing their Tizen OS and it's just a matter of time before it become the official OS, especially for all their new devices. ANDROIDPIT has a good write up on M, most of the features we always wanted from the launch of ICS, but it's great to see Google developers paying attention, as we saw improvements to the features in each OS release after ICS, in particularly the security/permissions of applications. Kudos to Google! I'm not sure about Samsung, they've been acting like Apple lately (if you know what I mean).
I'm all for device longevity but so what if we don't get M? Nobody promised us M when we bought this tablet, which is great the way it is as far as tablets on Kitkat/Lollipop go.
I dont think our tab s can handle android M

What is that comment based on?
I also have a Nexus 10 running Lollipop 5.1.1 and it runs better than the original v4.4.x it came with. The only issue I can think of is the size of the system partition and that could be addressed considering the amount of included bloatware. Besides my Nexus 5 is getting Android M and that cannot be that much different in power than a Tab S.
