[Q] IMEI Repair HTC One M9 ATT - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Long story short I was messing around flashing things and damn near turned my phone into a brick. I can get it to boot but my IMEI is 0'd out. Is there any way to repair the IMEI to it's original state? I found a guide for the M8 (posted below) but i've read that the stock ABOOT does not support the commands to rewrite IMEI. Can I use a development ABOOT or QXDM to do this? I've done it in the past with QXDM. Are there any guides out there?

Sorry to hear about this and hopefully someone with more knowledge than myself can help you out.

Well being that changing or altering a phones IMEI is Illegal and is not discussed here on these forums, I don't think you'll get much help unless someone wants to PM you with info.

What firmware did you flash to do this, and what m9 variant do you have? I can't help with imei but like post above you should let us know specifics so other people don't make this mistake.

[q] Confused about returning to stock

Hello everyone,
Couple of weeks ago I had a problem with soft-bricking my phone (thanks to the help on here I managed to fix it) But I now want to return my phone to stock. (I want to unlock the sim so I can use any sim card, and it seems the only way to do that is by having the phone in stock condition).
I have tried several RRU's but they always come up with an unknown error (155 I think) I have also managed to relock my bootloader (but that doesn't seem to help. Here are my phones details:

So where do I start? I've lost the original backups of the phone and although I made a backup of the original rom I'm not sure I backed-up the right thing! (last time I tried to use it, it bricked the phone)
I've tried this RRU RUU_M7_UL_JB43_SENSE50_MR_TMOUS_3.24.531.3_Radio_4A.21.3263.03_10.38m.1157.04_release_336982_signed_2(2)
Thank you for your help. I really want to use this phone but I can't seem to get past this sim lock!
Ruu M7....dude thats a HTC ONE ruu. Go to the general section and look for the nandroid backup collection thread. Get the one matching your main number and READ the OP carefully and completely. It's all written there what to do
There is no ruu available for you !
Here is a new nand for you

I will. As soon as this is done
However, I seem to have lost CWM (no longer accessible in fastboot when I go to recovery)
When you restore a nandroid backup you flash the recovery.img and the boot.img from the nand folder. That way you always restore the nand with the correct recovery
I relocked my bootloader..... So I need to unlock it again! (going to do that now)
Right. 100% back to stock (except for bootloader)
Still not taking the sim unlock code. -____- Should I try to get a new code perhaps? Or contact t-mobile and get it directly from them?
No harm in trying

Sorry for kicking this up again.....
Managed to get the unlock directly from the provider and it still refuses to unlock.....
You mention stock recovery - what is that??? - maybe this is the answer to my problem?
Thank you in advance.
If you restored a nandroid backup you have a custom recovery like cmw. If u used ruu then u have stock recovery.

Totally stumped.
I have absolutely no idea on what I am doing wrong with sim unlocking (never had a problem before ever)
I've returned the phone to stock (as far as I am aware) got the sim code directly from t-mobile/ee and yet the phone still wont unlock the sim.
Is there anything anyone can think of that I have missed (in terms of getting this phone back to 100% stock?) Could it be related to fastboot/cwm should I remove them and relock the phone as well? Will that help?
If you have stock rom, kernel and recovery it should unlock fine. But i have seen many of these reports lately that the phone just don't accept the code.
Maybe going to the carrier shop can help you ?

I'm probably going to end up sending it to t-mobile. However, if they wanted to check they will see that I have fastboot on the phone.... Isn't that a dead give away that the phone has been rooted?
They will always know it's been messed with because the bootloader says relocked (or still unlocked)
But unlocking does not necessarily means no warranty or service.

Telling someone that has no idea what they're doing to convert the phone isn't very good advice.
OP - do you understand anything about rooting and the commands used to root your phone?

yes i do.. i tried a few things but got stuck in between cos i dont know this stuff in depth..
I tried to unroot by downloading the stock firmware for my phone..
the method i was following was to match my cid number etc which i got through getvar with the firmwares on xda.. that bit i did well but the method i was following said that now i had to copy and paste this firmware in my phone in the backups folder of clockwordmod.. now i couldnt find that folder.. even though the backup i made is occupying space on my phone but i cannot locate it when i try to copy paste the downloaded firmware..
can you tell me where i can find that or tell an alternate way to do this thing?
OK, can you connect your phone when in the bootloader and then use the command fastboot getvar all to get information about your phone and post it up here (making sure you hide the IMEI and serial number, of course)

is this what you were asking for?
Indeed! OK, if you want go back to 100% stock, running on Sense as if you just got it out the box you can do the following:
First, download these files to the same location as fastboot:
4.16.401.10 RUU ZIP - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B17smFr95pleU2NqcVB3NWxoNnM/view (rename it ruu.zip - not ruu.zip.zip!)
htc_fastboot - https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95897840722646249 (doesn't need renaming)
1. Relock your bootloader - fastboot oem lock
2. Once done, reboot the bootloader to confirm it says 'RELOCKED' - fastboot reboot-bootloader
3. Once relocked, reboot the phone into RUU mode - fastboot oem rebootRUU
4. Once in RUU mode, flash the RUU ZIP using the HTC fastboot app - htc_fastboot flash zip ruu.zip
5. It will go through a few passes but once complete reboot the phone to the bootloader - fastboot reboot-bootloader
6. Once back at the bootloader, go into recovery and you should get the stock recovery not CWM. Hold volume up and press power to get the recovery menu and do a factory reset
7. Once the reset has finished, reboot the phone
You should now be working again on 100% stock Lollipop
help needed, new to rooting stuff
Hi forum members. This is my first post and and i am an infant in unlocking and rooting stuff. The reason I am researching these things is because of my HTC one m8. I got this phone used from a seller 6 months ago. I was expecting OTA updates but did not receive any till date. I am still running on 4.4.2 . So, after a bit of searching on forums, I learned about a thing called boot loader. And checked mine. To my surprise it was TAMPERED , UNLOCKED AND S-ON. Now I really don't know what that means. Some suggested to check if it's rooted, installed root checker and it said "device is not rooted" .
Can anyone pLease help me And explain me what all this means as it will be greatly appreciated.I only want to have OTA updates And need stock android. Thanks in advance
Best to start your own thread, and post up the same details as the OP in post #8, rather than confusing things in someone else's thread

That was the second request, the first being to get it back to stock. I was just saying that if they're not familiar with rooting HTC devices then converting to GPe could potentially brick the device

I'm an Arsenal fan but thank you anyway!
hey again
i unrooted my device and it seemed fine then but since day one the device is highly unstable.. I did the hard reset several times but have not been able to fix the problem.. suddenly all the data vanishes from the device and some features get locked ( brightness, power saver and others too). Please suggest what i should do?
Is there a way I can re-flash the stock lollipop with a different RUU file?
Nope, if you still have issues when stock you have a faulty phone
these are definitely sofware issues.. for example one in ten times when i format my device it starts working totally fine... but after a few days the same problem re-appears... the problem is that htc zoe add keeps popping up again and again.. and when it starts i cant adjust the brightness or the power saver options.. the rest of the phone works fine....
can you please suggest if i should convert my phone to GPE? or will it be too difficult a process for a rookie like me?
Sounds like a faulty phone, get it replaced

[Q] Does anyone know of a website where I can pay someone to fix my rooted phone?

My phone has some issues, it is not bricked or anything. But ever since i rooted and was messing around with different ROMS, my texting has been messed up. Cant send MMS, trouble receiving and sending texts. Receiving texts days later etc. Have tried different ROMS and tried different APN settings, different sms apps. Seems like this happened ever since i went from KitKat to Lollipop. Anyways, i backup my stock ROM which is sense 6 4.4.4 rooted. Once i was on my stock ROM it wanted my phone to update to lollipop. I could not update because i had TWRP recovery. I saw a video online that said i had to switch out TWRP recovery with stock recovery, reflash the update, and then i could switch back to TWRP. Something went wrong and i got a red triangle, so the stock recovery was not the right version or something. I'm real annoyed and tired of this and i would rather just pay someone to fix this for me. I have been working on this for a while and i'm not even that smart when it comes to this stuff like a lot of you guys are. So as of now i do not have a recovery. Phone can boot up and reboot and works fine except for texting. Does anyone know of a place, website that offers a service like this?

On the m8, when you boot into the stock recovery, it just shows a little m8 with a red triangle at first. You have to press vol down and power (or vol up and power, I can't remember) for it to show the menu. If it shows that rectangle, you did it right
This is website is a community full of people who can help you for free, don't pay :good:

Or it might be vol down + power, then vol up

Thanks for the kind words, gents!
To the OP, it looks like you haven't bothered following (or possibly even fully reading) any of the advice I gave you in your other thread (as Mr Hofs linked above).
You don't need a website where you can pay to fix your phone. We'll help you do it for free. You just need to be willing to gain some actual knowledge of how to mod the phone (as opposed to YouTube videos, which just teach you enough to get you into trouble); and be able to follow instructions.
Not only is paying someone to fix your phone completely unnecessary. But its also pretty clear you have (at least a previous) interest in rooting and flashing ROMs. Part of modding these phones, is knowing how to get out of jams and fix issues when they arise (and they inevitably will, no matter how careful or knowledgeable you are). So paying someone to "fix" your phone is just cheating your self of a valuable learning experience, and puts you in no better a situation than you are now, knowledge-wise.

well spoken. paying for services like that on xda goes against everything xda stands for, but no doubt someone will take advantage where there's advantage to be had.
i borked my droid bionic several years ago flashing an ICS preview build- the kind of bork so new that no one had a clear answer. i skipped work 3 days in a row, beasted through Linux boot sequence, partitions, a bit of scripting and surely countless other rabbit holes that im proud to *still* be a tenant of. IMADROID
(btw i fixed it) ive never bricked a device again after that experience. TLDR: its not the dev's fault, the phone's fault or bad luck.

Agreed. Some XDA users accept donations. But many of us have provided help to countless folks without asking for a penny. I've even seen a guy on here offer to JTAG phones for free for XDA users.
The OP doesn't even have anything that is really "broken". Just hasn't executed the steps 100% correctly. Easy to fix, and not worth (and not necessary) spending money on.
Hey guys i'm not trying to offend any of you. When i first got into rooting phones and modding and stuff like that about 3 years ago, it interested me. I wasn't as smart and experienced as any of you guys are, but i knew some of the basics. I thought i was really into computer science and technology and that kind of stuff. So in my first semester of college i decided to major in computer science. I had no idea what i got myself into. That class was so hard and i realized that maybe this type of thing just isn't for me. I got overwhelmed, way beyond stressed, i failed the class, dropped out of college and now i really am not interested in this stuff as much as i used to be. And that's fine. I mean you can't really dislike someone just because they aren't interested in something. I decided to root my phone just because i know rooting and playing with different ROMS isn't too difficult to do. So i rooted my phone and my phone has been messed up ever since. I have no idea what could have happened. I try to end MMS pics and they don't get delivered until 5 hours later, people get duplicate texts i never sent, texts get sent out of order. One time i received 6 texts at once all from different people that i was supposed to receive 2 days before. I cannot have this. If i were to get an important text from work or family and i were to not receive until days later, that would not be good. I am very rusty and i am just not really into this stuff as i used to be. I was never really good with this stuff like you guys. I just liked to customize my phone. And i get so frustrated with this stuff because something always goes wrong. Thats why i just wanted to pay someone to do this for me. I honestly would probably mess something up due to my lack of knowledge and brick my phone. And i'm sure you guys trying to explain this to me would get frustrated too because i'm the definition of a noob and don;t know anything. So sorry again if i offended anyone, i just want my phone fixed, and once it gets fixed (if it gets fixed) i will not be rooting my phone again.

Nobody is offended. We are just saying you should post your problem, and someone will help you. Hook your phone up to your PC and get into ADB/fastboot. Issue the command fastboot getvar all and post the readout here. Delete the serial# and IMEI from it as that is personal information.
From your getvar I, or someone else here, should be able to direct you to an RUU that will get you back to stock and wipe your device, enabling you to start over.

Here.
That's the RUU and instructions from HTC's US website. You'll want the manual update instructions. The download is at the bottom of the page.
Basically, you download it, hook up your phone to pc, double click the download, and follow the prompts.

Do i need S-Off to do this?
Do you know if RUU is potentially dangerous like is there a big risk of bricking my device?

As mentioned, you didn't offend anyone. We just don't want you wasting money on something we can help you with for free. And a lot of these mods, processes and concepts really aren't that hard. Once you spend some time learning how to get your phone back up and running; you can apply that same knowledge moving forward, and even (to some extent) to future Android devices. So I really do feel that the best way forward is for you to fix the phone yourself with our help; rather than paying someone to do it for you.
jfreshh330 said:
And i get so frustrated with this stuff because something always goes wrong. Thats why i just wanted to pay someone to do this for me. I honestly would probably mess something up due to my lack of knowledge and brick my phone. And i'm sure you guys trying to explain this to me would get frustrated too because i'm the definition of a noob and don;t know anything.

You'd be amazed at some of the noobery we put up with. lol, just kidding.
Seriously, as long as you are wiling to learn and put in the time, and can follow instructions, we're always willing to help. Its really the main point behind this Q&A, Help forum section.
I personally don't know jack about software development or computer science. Everything I know about smartphones and tablets was gained from XDA, and I don't mind trying to give something back to this community by helping others. And there are plenty of folks here who feel the same way.
This device is pretty hard to brick, especially with s-on. Just be careful about following instructions carefully, and only apply mods that you have been instructed to flash. Don't "experiment' or try to make up your own solutions; and don't try to flash mods intended for another device (and that includes the "CDMA" Sprint and Verizon versions of the M8); and you will almost certainly not brick the phone.
Things go wrong sometimes, that is simply unavoidable and practically inevitable, no matter how much you know. There are simply lots of variables, and lots of things that can go wrong, no matter how well you prepare. But with the proper knowledge, its typically not hard to work your way out of those jams. At most, it just causes some frustration and burns some time. You'll run into the same type of thing if you start tinkering with a PC, its just the nature of the game. But just be patient and diligent, and practically anything can be fixed.
xunholyx has you on the right track. But let us know how it goes, and if you need any more help at all.

No, you do not need to have s-off to run an RUU intended for your version of the M8. The bootloader does need to be LOCKED or RELOCKED.
The risk of bricking your device with the proper RUU is low. Anything that flashes hboot and the radio has some tiny risk of bricking the device; is something goes wrong while writing those partitions. But the risk I'd say is very low.
I am willing to learn, so if i do this RUU, this will un-root my phone and my phone will be completely stock? Also i do not have a recovery as of now, will this affect anything?

Yes, it will return you to stock. And yes you have a recovery. Probably the stock one I would guess. That won't affect anything.

Some do, some just double click the download.
Put your phone into your bootloader first before running the RUU.
It seems to help with some. It says something about that in the instructions on the website.

HTC 10 Us Unlock Converted - Request: 2.28.617.8 US Radio

Hey!
I was looking around the forum but couldn't find it, has anyone got Nougat radio for US Unlocked model? I'm currently on 2.28.617.8 and need radio to enable LTE Band 4.
I'm totally converted to US Unlocked, last step is radio which is what I'm looking foward to flash. Thanks!

Hi! Yes I'm S-OFF'ed. I was looking actually just for the radio to flash through fastboot, because I also want to stay in stock recovery not TWRP. Btw I had the following question: I was told that to gain LTE Band 4 I had to flash US Radio, but my concern is that after changing CID & MID I runned RUU, RUU doesn't also flash the radio of the actual firmware you are installing?
Thanks!!!
You're already on official Nougat through ruu/ota? You already have the Nougat radio then.

Yes I was on Marshmallow and got Nougat OTA about three weeks ago (can't remember exactly), that same thing is what I thought but I still don't have LTE band 4, I know two people that flashing radio made them get that band. I'm really confused and it's really disappointing having such a great cellphone going on 3.5G, awfull speed . BTW my APN is well set.

I'm able to get band 4 on my VZW 10 fully converted to Unlocked. Didn't reflash the radio. Besides you'd literally be flashing the exact same thing you already have.
There is fastboot command that resets your modems. I've had success with it when I had data issues in the past. You may want to try it.
From bootloader:
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2

Naa I don't think it touches your imei. From what I understand it just replaces your modem partition and restores it from a fully stock backup. But of course you're right to be cautious, and I'm not a dev though, so enter at your own risk, etc.
See this from a dev for an example of where it's used:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67178890&postcount=238
Also you can find it in other threads around here.

I'll try to see if I do get another lower risk advice haha, if not i'll guess i'll do that. I think it actually deletes those partitions
Does anybody know the reason why conversion does work for everyone except this case? I've done everything, every and each single step. Worked always on my previous HTC's, first time this happens to me.

If you want to flash the radio only, download a firmware.zip and unzip it with 7zip. Find the radio.img in the firmware and move it to your fastboot folder. Hook up your phone, and:
fastboot flash radio radio.img

You're in this predicament because you didn't follow directions. Henceforth, follow directions precisely and if you're unclear, then ask specific questions about those instructions.
IIRC, Nougat RUU won't flash with S-On but you can try it and then see if it takes the OTA to Oreo.
Can you unlock the bootloader? (I don't know if you can just flash the same file you originally used or if you have to get a new one after relocking.) If you can do that, you should be able to install TWRP and flash any of the custom ROMs (LeeDroid for a stock-based ROM).

You dont NEED RUU. OTA is enough!
Try this. Download this OTA which is for your device
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=890129502657577036 > remember to refresh link as sometimes androidhostfile shows as not found or error
"OTA_PERFUME_UHL_O80_SENSE90GP_MR_HTC_Europe_3.16.401.2_R4-2.41.401.41_release_519849u8ji7j8e2tj4znyo.zip"
rename it to 2PS6IMG.zip
(make sure its not 2PS6IMG.zip.zip again. show extension in windows to make sure)
put into the root of your SDCARD (transfer via microSD card reader)
put SDCARD back into your phone
boot phone in download mode (volume down + power) let go of power but keep holding volume down for a while
once in download mode the 2PS6IMG.zip will get detected and you can proceed to install by pressing volume up.
YES IT DOESNT MATTER IF UR BOOTLOADER IS LOCKED AND S-ON or EVEN IF RECOVERY IS MESSED UP. As long as CID matches (i assume it will since yours is .401 variant as per your bootloader info "version-main: 3.16.401.2" which is unbranded cid / europe /mid.east/africa the link i gave should work)
i screwed up my htc 10 but it got rescued too because of this
Let me know how this went

Just to enlighten you all, the OP says he formatted everything, all the partitions including the system. So there is no OS present on the phone.
In this case a RUU is much better because it also holds the full stock system. The OTA does not contain the full OS. So flashing the OTA on a phone without the OS present is not going to help. The phone will not boot.
All this info is because i had a good read in the OP post. The theory of the OTA is fine but not in this case.
So before you guys will wave your precious little genitals towards me i suggest to read more carefully and base your help on that
Cheers.

Yeah thanks. I deleted all my post because there's no point in arguing. Your correct I totally forgot what the OP problem was after all this. Thanks for the clarification.
Hi Mr Hofs,
Thanks for the enlightenment.
In my case I had erased the OS also. Not only that. I had erased system. Last time I had access to TWRP it kept giving me unable to mount several partitions. After which I lost access to TWRP. The bootloader did not allow me to enter any recovery after that. It just kept rebooting to download mode. Much less I had no OS that would load. Luckily I did not relock bootloader and it was left unlocked. With my past experience with my several HTC devices I know for sure that a major OTA such as this OREO OTA has the ability to completely rewrite the whole system and restore the device to working. I have repeated the scenario and even posted pictures in the post above. You can clearly see the system image is being installed in one of the pictures. So with much respect I really disagree with the whole OTA is not gonna work in this case concept. Because for me I have proof of concept. ?
I stressed several times in this post that it has worked for me. That in my case I had access to download mode and that I used the sdcard method. Download detected the OTA renamed as 2PS6IMG.zip and my phone got fully restored HTC 10 to working condition.
As per my experience as mentioned above HTC phones like many other are designed to pickup "correct" types of installable and device matching zip files from sdcard no matter what the situation is and would try to restore the lost functionality to ensure a device can be used again.
I just hope OP gets his device recovered. Because the OTA link I have provided OP is the same I used. It contains OS and everything vital. Just the OP needs to try. Unless he has a mismatching CID I assume it will work for him too.
Thanks ?
Thanks to XDA community as well.
This would be my last post in this thread unless OP requests my intervention. Speaking of which I wonder where he is when so much has been said. Haha.

It's great it worked for you and i truly hope it helps the OP too. The other weird thing that notices me actually is that in fact the OTA is in this case the same as the RUU ? Why isn't there a 3.16.401 RUU ? I think there are some hiccups when the OTA is refferenced as a RUU (which feels like it is in this thread because it seems to contain the OS and firmware)
intriguing .........

Now that was good reply to the predicament we were having here. Yes I would like to know too why this OTA had the same effects of an RUU. Please let me know if you get to know the findings.
And here I also publicly apologize wholeheartedly to @yldlj
Sorry mate. Just went a little overboard when what I should have said was it did work for me. I just hope it works for OP. Cos if it doesn't you guys are gonna have a bashing party ready for me. Hahaha

I also apologise and I'm not sure if you got my pm apologising also. This is very strange that the OTA acts the same as ruu. I never knew that you had no os when you used the file. I think we got caught up in different things. I also believed that it's did work for you. Hopefully the OP can try it and get back to the thread. Cheers guys :good:
Yeah i got your PM. Thanks for that. After reading your PM i also knew how stupid i was being. And when i came to delete the post, they were already deleted by the thread administrators.
Sorry once more man. Wont happen again

As long as CID matches (i assume it will since yours is .401 variant as per your bootloader info "version-main: 3.16.401.2" which is unbranded cid / europe /mid.east/africa the link i gave should work)
i screwed up my htc 10 but it got rescued too because of this
Let me know how this went

it started flashing but after some system.img installed, it gives me 8 RU_SIGNATURE_FAIL
I 've tried to reset everything from the recovery but it did nothing
and in the first queue of flash there is some of them bypass didn't give me 100%

Yeah everyone I flash RUU it does bypass some things. Relocking bootloader usually causes problems and I don't know people still keep doing it. I would say flash twrp followed by leedroid but pretty sure you need an unlocked bootloader to flash twrp. Sorry but I'm out of ideas.
