Okay. The instructions are in the link. Where are you getting stuck?
Telling someone that has no idea what they're doing to convert the phone isn't very good advice.
OP - do you understand anything about rooting and the commands used to root your phone?

yes i do.. i tried a few things but got stuck in between cos i dont know this stuff in depth..
I tried to unroot by downloading the stock firmware for my phone..
the method i was following was to match my cid number etc which i got through getvar with the firmwares on xda.. that bit i did well but the method i was following said that now i had to copy and paste this firmware in my phone in the backups folder of clockwordmod.. now i couldnt find that folder.. even though the backup i made is occupying space on my phone but i cannot locate it when i try to copy paste the downloaded firmware..
can you tell me where i can find that or tell an alternate way to do this thing?
OK, can you connect your phone when in the bootloader and then use the command fastboot getvar all to get information about your phone and post it up here (making sure you hide the IMEI and serial number, of course)

is this what you were asking for?
Indeed! OK, if you want go back to 100% stock, running on Sense as if you just got it out the box you can do the following:
First, download these files to the same location as fastboot:
4.16.401.10 RUU ZIP - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B17smFr95pleU2NqcVB3NWxoNnM/view (rename it ruu.zip - not ruu.zip.zip!)
htc_fastboot - https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95897840722646249 (doesn't need renaming)
1. Relock your bootloader - fastboot oem lock
2. Once done, reboot the bootloader to confirm it says 'RELOCKED' - fastboot reboot-bootloader
3. Once relocked, reboot the phone into RUU mode - fastboot oem rebootRUU
4. Once in RUU mode, flash the RUU ZIP using the HTC fastboot app - htc_fastboot flash zip ruu.zip
5. It will go through a few passes but once complete reboot the phone to the bootloader - fastboot reboot-bootloader
6. Once back at the bootloader, go into recovery and you should get the stock recovery not CWM. Hold volume up and press power to get the recovery menu and do a factory reset
7. Once the reset has finished, reboot the phone
You should now be working again on 100% stock Lollipop
help needed, new to rooting stuff
Hi forum members. This is my first post and and i am an infant in unlocking and rooting stuff. The reason I am researching these things is because of my HTC one m8. I got this phone used from a seller 6 months ago. I was expecting OTA updates but did not receive any till date. I am still running on 4.4.2 . So, after a bit of searching on forums, I learned about a thing called boot loader. And checked mine. To my surprise it was TAMPERED , UNLOCKED AND S-ON. Now I really don't know what that means. Some suggested to check if it's rooted, installed root checker and it said "device is not rooted" .
Can anyone pLease help me And explain me what all this means as it will be greatly appreciated.I only want to have OTA updates And need stock android. Thanks in advance
Best to start your own thread, and post up the same details as the OP in post #8, rather than confusing things in someone else's thread

That was the second request, the first being to get it back to stock. I was just saying that if they're not familiar with rooting HTC devices then converting to GPe could potentially brick the device

I'm an Arsenal fan but thank you anyway!
hey again
i unrooted my device and it seemed fine then but since day one the device is highly unstable.. I did the hard reset several times but have not been able to fix the problem.. suddenly all the data vanishes from the device and some features get locked ( brightness, power saver and others too). Please suggest what i should do?
Is there a way I can re-flash the stock lollipop with a different RUU file?
Nope, if you still have issues when stock you have a faulty phone
these are definitely sofware issues.. for example one in ten times when i format my device it starts working totally fine... but after a few days the same problem re-appears... the problem is that htc zoe add keeps popping up again and again.. and when it starts i cant adjust the brightness or the power saver options.. the rest of the phone works fine....
can you please suggest if i should convert my phone to GPE? or will it be too difficult a process for a rookie like me?
Sounds like a faulty phone, get it replaced

Hello everyone,
Couple of weeks ago I had a problem with soft-bricking my phone (thanks to the help on here I managed to fix it) But I now want to return my phone to stock. (I want to unlock the sim so I can use any sim card, and it seems the only way to do that is by having the phone in stock condition).
I have tried several RRU's but they always come up with an unknown error (155 I think) I have also managed to relock my bootloader (but that doesn't seem to help. Here are my phones details:

So where do I start? I've lost the original backups of the phone and although I made a backup of the original rom I'm not sure I backed-up the right thing! (last time I tried to use it, it bricked the phone)
I've tried this RRU RUU_M7_UL_JB43_SENSE50_MR_TMOUS_3.24.531.3_Radio_4A.21.3263.03_10.38m.1157.04_release_336982_signed_2(2)
Thank you for your help. I really want to use this phone but I can't seem to get past this sim lock!

I will. As soon as this is done
However, I seem to have lost CWM (no longer accessible in fastboot when I go to recovery)
When you restore a nandroid backup you flash the recovery.img and the boot.img from the nand folder. That way you always restore the nand with the correct recovery
I relocked my bootloader..... So I need to unlock it again! (going to do that now)
Right. 100% back to stock (except for bootloader)
Still not taking the sim unlock code. -____- Should I try to get a new code perhaps? Or contact t-mobile and get it directly from them?
No harm in trying

Managed to get the unlock directly from the provider and it still refuses to unlock.....
You mention stock recovery - what is that??? - maybe this is the answer to my problem?

If you restored a nandroid backup you have a custom recovery like cmw. If u used ruu then u have stock recovery.

Totally stumped.
I have absolutely no idea on what I am doing wrong with sim unlocking (never had a problem before ever)
I've returned the phone to stock (as far as I am aware) got the sim code directly from t-mobile/ee and yet the phone still wont unlock the sim.
Is there anything anyone can think of that I have missed (in terms of getting this phone back to 100% stock?) Could it be related to fastboot/cwm should I remove them and relock the phone as well? Will that help?
If you have stock rom, kernel and recovery it should unlock fine. But i have seen many of these reports lately that the phone just don't accept the code.
Maybe going to the carrier shop can help you ?

I'm probably going to end up sending it to t-mobile. However, if they wanted to check they will see that I have fastboot on the phone.... Isn't that a dead give away that the phone has been rooted?
They will always know it's been messed with because the bootloader says relocked (or still unlocked)
But unlocking does not necessarily means no warranty or service.

Hi
I need to root my HTC M8 for a Project (using in a car as multimedia Device).
Unfortunately i already updated OTA to android version 6
I've tried Tools like rootking => not working!
How i can easily root my device? I'm not really an expert but i have some small basic know how..
Many thanks in advance for any hint
Kind regards
Andy
Kingroot should work, although there have been some mixed results.
Otherwise, you will need to unlock the bootloader by HTCDev.com, install TWRP 3.0, then in flash SuperSU 2.65 in TWRP to get root.

The only website you need is XDA. It can be intimidating to navigate at first, like trying to sip out of a firehouse. But given a bit of time and patience, you'll find that XDA is a wealth of information, and a great community to boot. Other "root" websites are often poorly organized, outdated (both of which can lead to problems) and almost always just steal content (methods, downloads, etc.) from the devs here on XDA, while giving little or no credit. So you may as well get it here from the source.
Vomer's guide explains what to do: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/general/vomerguides-m8-bootldr-unlock-s-off-t2800727
While a bit outdated, Sections 0 and 1 are still applicable. The only thing that I am aware of, that you should watch out for, is to use current version TWRP 3.0 from here: https://dl.twrp.me/m8/
Don't follow sections 2, etc. as they are no longer accurate (but no needed for root).

I second this. XDA is tough to navigate at first, but once you realize what to search, which forums to be in, and READ through the pages. you will find what you need

No worries, m8 is done with OTA's, you probably will never again recieve OTA. Just go and unlock the bootloader via htcdev, flash twrp and supersu via twrp.
Follow this guide video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEVSfwXsx-c
You'll wipe your internal storage w/ bootloader unlock.

Lots of different methods for backing up various things, depending on one's personal preferences and needs. But just a few suggestions:
1) As previously suggested, backup contacts using Google/Gmail account (which is normally activated by default - but good to check that its activated).
2) Backup photos and other files to computer (just copy/paste to a folder on the computer).
3) Backup photos and files to cloud (Google Photos, Dropbox, etc.) - although the amount of files may exceed the "free" storage on some of these services.
4) App data (and a lot of other things) can be backed up with Helium app from the Play Store. I haven't used it personally, but others on XDA have suggested it. Helium is touted as a comprehensive backup app, that doesn't require root, and developed by the Clockworkmod team. I tend to use Titanium Backup (which requires root) for app data, as I don't keep my Android devices unrooted for long after buying them!

That is super weird.. In worst case scenario, your vibration motor died, but it has nothing to do with twrp/root..
Post your " fastboot getvar all " results without imei and serial number, so we can see what's going on and/if ruu is available.

Okay, you have S-ON...
First, make a nandroid backup in twrp and rename(optional) or add root just so u know it's rooted backup in internal or microsd or usb otg, then follow this thread to restore 100% stock non-rooted nandroid.

Ok so I am about to try to flash cm13 and pico gapps but I some questions: I read that you should wipe your system before flashing any rom; does this wipe my sd card too? and if I wanted to do a restore using the TWRP backup that I created, would I have to wipe before doing so as well? And last question: how do I know which pico gapps to install? Thanks and sorry if I am beginning to be annoying
Hello,
As mentioned in the title, I have a HTC one m9 which I have somehow bricked by attempting to install supersu. I flashed a rom that was horribly slow, so I wanted to flash my stock rom after I have flashed the other rom. It was a RUU so I relocked my bootloader, but the update failed because I am S-ON. Whenever I try to unlock my bootloader again it asks me if I want to unlock and that would void my warranty everything as normal but would then restart and still be relocked. Also, whenever I try to boot normally it takes me to bootloader. Any help would be appreciated! (No SD card I have.)

Have you tried to download from

And reinstall the stock 6.01 using download mode through your bootloader?

Do you have s-off? I had the same error code when I tried to install the wrong one. I have an at&t HTC so I downloaded from the top. You have to make sure oem unlock and debug mode are check on the developer option from your phone. Reboot into download mode and should work like a charm. When I installed supersu I had to go back to 2.65 version or use magisk root.

As I mentioned I have S-ON. If there's any way I can make it S-OFF with fastboot or something I'd be glad to, and bootloader is stuck at relocked.

Just remember magisk root is really easy but supersu install the 2.65 and not the 2.78 or 2.79. They will just keep bootlooping the phone.

Thank you! Guess I should have looked better before flashing supersu...
Anyway, do you have any other solutions if this doesn't work? I'm really paranoid and afraid that I cannot fix my phone this time. I usually go through this stuff a lot but I usually fix it easily too, but this time it's been a few days and I'm really frustrated.

Do you have twrp installed? One time I formatted everything by accident including the boot loader. It took me awhile to fix everything but I did. One time I had to install a custom rom and then I was able to go to stock. Its usually just trial and error. That's what I love android so much because of the freedom.

My bootloader is relocked, and won't unlock again. As I said before, goes through all the normal stuff and then reboots to bootloader and stays relocked. Therefore, I cannot access recovery.
You haven't unlocked the bootloader yet? Its free and helps you step by step using this site.
http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/
That's usually the first thing I do. The key it provides you in the terminal is very picky so make sure there are no spaces.

The problem he is likely to run into is that the HTC fast boot checks the os to see if unlocking is allowed. I made the same mistake myself trying to get back to stock to install nougat. I have hima_ul w s-on and the uhl version didn't take on my phone. I imagine Mike will need the uhl version ruu. Put the phone in fastboot, then run the ruu. Make sure that you have a .doc viewer installed (open office will suffice). I found the ruu will bomb out silently it you don't. It's some error thrown by the ARWizard contained in the ruu.
You can also teach out to HTC support. They can reset the device for you.

You're in this predicament because you didn't follow directions. Henceforth, follow directions precisely and if you're unclear, then ask specific questions about those instructions.
IIRC, Nougat RUU won't flash with S-On but you can try it and then see if it takes the OTA to Oreo.
Can you unlock the bootloader? (I don't know if you can just flash the same file you originally used or if you have to get a new one after relocking.) If you can do that, you should be able to install TWRP and flash any of the custom ROMs (LeeDroid for a stock-based ROM).

You dont NEED RUU. OTA is enough!
Try this. Download this OTA which is for your device
https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=890129502657577036 > remember to refresh link as sometimes androidhostfile shows as not found or error
"OTA_PERFUME_UHL_O80_SENSE90GP_MR_HTC_Europe_3.16.401.2_R4-2.41.401.41_release_519849u8ji7j8e2tj4znyo.zip"
rename it to 2PS6IMG.zip
(make sure its not 2PS6IMG.zip.zip again. show extension in windows to make sure)
put into the root of your SDCARD (transfer via microSD card reader)
put SDCARD back into your phone
boot phone in download mode (volume down + power) let go of power but keep holding volume down for a while
once in download mode the 2PS6IMG.zip will get detected and you can proceed to install by pressing volume up.
YES IT DOESNT MATTER IF UR BOOTLOADER IS LOCKED AND S-ON or EVEN IF RECOVERY IS MESSED UP. As long as CID matches (i assume it will since yours is .401 variant as per your bootloader info "version-main: 3.16.401.2" which is unbranded cid / europe /mid.east/africa the link i gave should work)

Just to enlighten you all, the OP says he formatted everything, all the partitions including the system. So there is no OS present on the phone.
In this case a RUU is much better because it also holds the full stock system. The OTA does not contain the full OS. So flashing the OTA on a phone without the OS present is not going to help. The phone will not boot.
All this info is because i had a good read in the OP post. The theory of the OTA is fine but not in this case.
So before you guys will wave your precious little genitals towards me i suggest to read more carefully and base your help on that
Cheers.

Yeah thanks. I deleted all my post because there's no point in arguing. Your correct I totally forgot what the OP problem was after all this. Thanks for the clarification.
Hi Mr Hofs,
Thanks for the enlightenment.
In my case I had erased the OS also. Not only that. I had erased system. Last time I had access to TWRP it kept giving me unable to mount several partitions. After which I lost access to TWRP. The bootloader did not allow me to enter any recovery after that. It just kept rebooting to download mode. Much less I had no OS that would load. Luckily I did not relock bootloader and it was left unlocked. With my past experience with my several HTC devices I know for sure that a major OTA such as this OREO OTA has the ability to completely rewrite the whole system and restore the device to working. I have repeated the scenario and even posted pictures in the post above. You can clearly see the system image is being installed in one of the pictures. So with much respect I really disagree with the whole OTA is not gonna work in this case concept. Because for me I have proof of concept. ?
I stressed several times in this post that it has worked for me. That in my case I had access to download mode and that I used the sdcard method. Download detected the OTA renamed as 2PS6IMG.zip and my phone got fully restored HTC 10 to working condition.
As per my experience as mentioned above HTC phones like many other are designed to pickup "correct" types of installable and device matching zip files from sdcard no matter what the situation is and would try to restore the lost functionality to ensure a device can be used again.
I just hope OP gets his device recovered. Because the OTA link I have provided OP is the same I used. It contains OS and everything vital. Just the OP needs to try. Unless he has a mismatching CID I assume it will work for him too.
Thanks ?
Thanks to XDA community as well.
This would be my last post in this thread unless OP requests my intervention. Speaking of which I wonder where he is when so much has been said. Haha.

It's great it worked for you and i truly hope it helps the OP too. The other weird thing that notices me actually is that in fact the OTA is in this case the same as the RUU ? Why isn't there a 3.16.401 RUU ? I think there are some hiccups when the OTA is refferenced as a RUU (which feels like it is in this thread because it seems to contain the OS and firmware)
intriguing .........

Yeah everyone I flash RUU it does bypass some things. Relocking bootloader usually causes problems and I don't know people still keep doing it. I would say flash twrp followed by leedroid but pretty sure you need an unlocked bootloader to flash twrp. Sorry but I'm out of ideas.
Hello everyone,
- i'm sry if i posted abt the same issue but i managed to gather more information abt the situation
- 1st of all everytime i reboot i find the same apps installed , pics and missed calls no matter how many times i erase all that and if i installed new apps every reboot it's not there, I wanted to get it back to stock as new but i couldn't and here what i have tried :-
1-couldn't flash stock or custom recovery [failed (Remote : Not allowed)] cuz bootloader is locked, And i couldn't unlock bootloader .
-(after getting unlock code from HTCdev.com and installing it and after selecting yes on the phone to unlock bootloader, phone just reboots)
2-tried to flash RUU (3.30.651.2 & 4.25.651.14) Wizard while phone was on fastboot mode
https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=AC7B...23EA2B!345&parId=AC7BFAC4E523EA2B!341&o=OneUp

3-tried to flash RUU (3.30.651.2 & 4.25.651.14) wizard while phone was on
https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=AC7B...23EA2B!344&parId=AC7BFAC4E523EA2B!341&o=OneUp
-did the first steps ok but again when wizard is waiting for bootloader while phone was in fastboot mode, it just reboot regularly.
4-tried renaming another (4.25.651.14) RUU to 0P6BIMG.zip and put it on sd-card and went to Hboot.
https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=AC7B...23EA2B!342&parId=AC7BFAC4E523EA2B!341&o=OneUp
-after clicking yes to confirm the update, Phone rebooted in the middle of the steps .
5-tried flashing same 0P6BIMG.zip from recovery mode.
https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=AC7B...23EA2B!347&parId=AC7BFAC4E523EA2B!341&o=OneUp
-after 3 mins of hope crushed by verifying update package.... - Installation aborted....
6-tried flashing RUU.zip via fastboot
https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=AC7B...23EA2B!346&parId=AC7BFAC4E523EA2B!341&o=OneUp
-phone just reboots regularly when trying to reboot RUU .
7-I contacted HTC support and after givin 'em alot of images and getvar they told me that my phone was modified in two ways (s-off) &
(Recovery tool) , They are telling me that (i must install the android recovery tool once again before proceeding) !! and i need to search on this site (Xda) for the stock recovery, but i think i have the stock recovery tool, and i can't flash any recovery because bootloader is locked, So is there any other way to flash recovery.

Since you are s-off, try this method to unlock bootloader: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708571
Although I don't see the point in flashing stock recovery. It won't help your present situation (return to full stock).
What recovery is currently on the phone, stock or TWRP? What happens when you try to select Recovery from the bootloader menu?

Can't see what you are trying to flash. It says "This item may not exist or is no longer available".
All Sprint RUUs are available here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2729173
Thanks for the fast reply

-I was flashing 3.30.651.2 RUU.exe while phone was on bootloader mode, The thing is if the phone is on bootloader mode and wizard is showing that it's (Waiting for bootloader...) ,then phone reboots regularly and nothing changed
-And if phone was just on with activated usb debugging and i opened RUU.exe, the first step is to get to bootloader mode and then will send all the data of the RUU, Then it will show it's (Waiting for bootloader....) again, But because the phone is already in bootloader mode, The phone will just reboot as i showed in step 3, so when wizard is trying to go bootloader mode while phone is on bootloader mode that's what make it doesn't work.
-This is another link of Step 2 (Flashing 3.30.651.2 RUU.exe) while on fastboot mode

-I read abt Nandroid backup and how it takes an exact image of everything on the phone, could it be that someone did that backup and every time phone reboots it restores that backup, and if so how to know if something like that is activated.
Does the phone work normally in OS (but just won't wipe properly)? If you are trying to return to "stock", than what condition is it in now? Is it stock ROM, or otherwise?

So I'm confused if you have stock recovery installed already; why you are trying to install stock recovery, or what that will do for you.

No, that isn't how a nandroid works. You need a custom recovery like TWRP to make a nandroid. And it will only restore if you manually boot into TWRP, and restore it. None of it happens "automatically" like you are describing.

Any type of error messages when you try to run the command to unlock the bootloader using the command prompt method?

-yes it works fine in OS but won't wipe at all, I can install\uninstall apps , delete or add pictures but as soon the phone is rebooted everything gets back the way it was,
-I don't know if it has stock Rom installed on it, I just want to delete everything and start over with unmodified OS

-sry for the confusion, I just thought if i could flash stock one by myself i could get around this situation somehow and at the same time the HTC support told me i don't have Stock recovery and i should flash stock one as the first step.

HTC support is wrong on that (or they are misunderstanding). Black screen with red triangle is the stock recovery. Re-installing the stock recovery isn't going to change or help anything.
Based on the widespread (largely storage-related) issues you've described (wiped user data reappearing, bootloader won't unlock despite multiple methods, RUUs won't flash) I tend to think this is an emmc failure, which you can't do much about. And based on the wide variety of options/workarounds you've tried so far (and failed) I don't personally see much (if any) options moving forward, unfortunately. If I think of anything else to try, I'll certainly let you know.
Thanks for your time and effort

I've got the same issue, it's eMMC failure and you have to replace with the new one.

You can't trust what is on the back cover. We've often seen these swapped to remove US carrier logos. All indications on your getvar point to the "internals" of the phone (which is the important factor - and what you need to go by) being the Sprint version M8. It's very common to see the Sprint version to have its back cover replaced in order to remove the Sprint logo and sell it as an "unbranded" version (which it really is not).

I'm not really a "hardware" guy. I can never seem to perform any hardware-related repairs on small electronics; despite being an engineer (very technically-minded) and all-around very careful about doing things (too obsessive about the minutia, in fact). But I have to say, changing emmc seems really delicate, and will not turn out well unless you are already experienced with this type of thing, and good at it. As far as I can tell, it involves heating up the chip, then installing the new one and "reflowing" the solder points. All of which looks really tricky, with a bunch of things that can go wrong along the way.
Might be better to have a repair shop do it, or change the whole motherboard, if you really want to go through the effort of hardware repairs to get this phone working again.
If you do change the emmc (or have a shop do it) I would only recommend using one intended for the Sprint M8. If you look at the thread NoIP linked, you will see I'm trying to help him with a weird emmc-motherboard combo, which I am not sure is fixable.
Thanks mate for explaining that
