[Q] Best Variant for Root/Unlock - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am ready to give up my Nexus 5 and I want to purchase a new G3 for use on a US GSM/LTE carrier. What is the best variant to get in the way of ease of use/root/bootloader unlock?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

D851 comes with an unlocked bootloader. Just root and you're good!

Do you think it's possible to request a specific variant if ordering through a carrier?

Not likely. D851 is the T-mobile version and can only be bought from there brand new, unless you buy used to refurbished online.

Ditto.
Bootloaders are locked in a similar manner though. And it says that they will have to be unlocked on the dev edition
If it doesn't directly help us, it can help us figure out a method.

I was thinking / hoping the same thing.
If it has the att bands it will work. Verizon phones aren't sim locked.
Well I'm talking about it being used to find a possible unlock or root for our device.

There is also a Developer Edition for at&t. You can get it at any T-Mobile store.
Well... Some people can't afford to do so, or like me, can't afford to wait to get one after selling this phone. It is currently my only working phone for AT&T. I would do an outright trade, but no one around me wants to do it.

Use Off Carrier?

Hi All! Sorry for my ignorance, but I'm looking into buying a G3 used.
Are all the models the same (i.e. can I use the Verizon g3, unlock it, and use it on a GSM carrier such as ATT?) or do I need to get a specific one for my carrier (I'm on Net10/AT&T).
Thanks!

Where to buy Unlocked LG G4?

It seems like all of the of the carriers have released the LG G4 locked to the carrier, but where can I purchase it unlocked, so that I can switch between carriers?
Does Best Buy sell it unlocked?
I'm in South Florida, USA.
Thank you.
Best place so far, and several have got them from this seller on ebay here at XDA

Looks pretty legit, do you have a link to satisfied customers on XDA?
Thank you for the link.

He is selling the Asian version.
The only one with an unlockable bootloader (right now) is the EU version. (if that matters to you)
I suppose I'm confused about the differences. I'd like to be able to root/unlock the bootloader - which will allow me to install custom ROMs/modifications?
But my main concern at the moment is being able to switch carriers - for example from Sprint to T-Mobile.
I dont think you can go from sprint to t-mobile. Sprint is CDMA and T-Mobile is GSM
Also good to know the 815 isnt universal, had no idea. WAY to many SKUs on this phone!!
The Asian version at that link will run on T-Mobile, AT&T or any other GSM provider just fine. It won't run on Sprint or Verizon.
I have an unlock one up gor sale on swappa. Check for Fidelio_o
No one is selling an unlocked version. An unlock is not even available (for the US variants).
I got the unlocked version from that eBay listing. Using it on AT&T. Love it.
Does 815 have quick charging?
Does anyone know if 815 model comes with quick charging?

Im using my anker quick charger and it works just fine.
B&H Photo will have them around June 20. $629 for non-leather, $699 for leather.

That's one of the questions I also have. If I buy the unlocked version will it be compatible with both AT&T & T-Mobile. And by compatible I mean will I get full 4G LTE speeds while using on either carrier. I currently have a unlocked branded T-Mobile HTC One M8 but I don't get AT&T's LTE when I put in one of their SIM cards.

Go ahead, call it. Hope it makes you feel better.
It's not an AT&T branded model that was unlocked after purchase. It's a factory unlocked model. As in, not carrier branded, was never locked to begin with so didn't need to be unlocked.

Bootloader unlock is available for the h815 but you just blew your warranty if anyone is selling g4s with unlocked bootloaders i would be careful as there is no warranty lg has already stated once you unlock the bootloader your warranty is blown.

Dude, I have an H815. The bootloader is not unlocked. Factory unlocked refers to the phone not being locked to a specific carrier, not the bootloader. It works on AT&T and T-Mobile and any GSM carrier I want. And I didn't have to do any unlocking myself to get it carrier unlocked. It came that way from the LG factory, hence the term "factory unlocked". LG sells this model that way. Warranty in tact.

real EU variants
Ok I know that just flicked through the thread and caught some one calling BS about not being able to buy unlocked as I bought mine direct from lg and it's unlocked, by not reading from the beginning I surmised it was about the boot loader.

How to tell between verizon and unlocked without having the actual device

Hi, I currently am using a galaxy s9+ and I don't like it because you have to jump through so many hoops for root. I want to buy a pixel 2 xl used from my area but need unlocked version. How can I tell so I don't buy the wrong one?

Buy it directly from Google is the best way to be sure. Best Buy, Verizon, and most all the other retailers only sell the verizon variant, which means..it's locked down. Swappa isn't bad either for finding an unlockable version :good:
If you have the box, look at the barcodes.
If you see:
SIM ID= LOCKED
ESIM ID = Google version

Get the IMEI number from the seller and run it through this: http://www.imeipro.info/check_lg.html If the seller cannot or will not provide the IMEI in advance to check beforehand, then do not buy it.

Yes I've ran it through here. Now what? There's no where that says Google or Verizon

If your willing to post a pic, we'd be able to help you. There's a specific line that should give an indication of what type it is.

If either Verizon or Google, it will be very clear. What does yours say under BUYER CODE and BUYER NAME ? Mine are USX & GOOGLE_OPEN_64G.
if it has VZW in the buyer name, its locked bootloader.
I think this one is Verizon?

correct
Thanks everyone! Torn between waiting for op6 then selling s9+ or just selling s9+ and getting pixel 2 xl. But this definently helps if I decided pixel!

Question Is it possible to sim unlock the Total Wireless version?

Any chances I could unlock this phone? Is it impossible? I've seen some websites that claim to do it but most of them look like scams.
if you find a good service please let me know)
my motorola does not receive a message to enter the network unlock code(((
...i just wondering if it is rootable? ...any one unlocked bootloader?
Total wireless and tracfone variants are not bootloader unlockable. Never will be unless a exploit shows

Let's hope a root exploit that doesn't require an unlocked bootloader appears then, that sucks and I wish I had known before I purchased mine
I found a workaround that let me activate it on AT&T Prepaid (and presumably the rest of AT&T), I will also see if I can try to get it working on Verizon as they have the best coverage in my area
