Hi, I currently am using a galaxy s9+ and I don't like it because you have to jump through so many hoops for root. I want to buy a pixel 2 xl used from my area but need unlocked version. How can I tell so I don't buy the wrong one?

Buy it directly from Google is the best way to be sure. Best Buy, Verizon, and most all the other retailers only sell the verizon variant, which means..it's locked down. Swappa isn't bad either for finding an unlockable version :good:
If you have the box, look at the barcodes.
If you see:
SIM ID= LOCKED
ESIM ID = Google version

Get the IMEI number from the seller and run it through this: http://www.imeipro.info/check_lg.html If the seller cannot or will not provide the IMEI in advance to check beforehand, then do not buy it.

If either Verizon or Google, it will be very clear. What does yours say under BUYER CODE and BUYER NAME ? Mine are USX & GOOGLE_OPEN_64G.
if it has VZW in the buyer name, its locked bootloader.

Thanks everyone! Torn between waiting for op6 then selling s9+ or just selling s9+ and getting pixel 2 xl. But this definently helps if I decided pixel!

I'm looking at purchasing an unlocked Note 4 (the buyer says he purchased unlocked via best buy. Does this mean it's the international version?). Will this work on Sprints network?
I know my current Note 3 has a sim looking tray from my card.
Thank you!
Unlocked could mean he bought the phone outright which means it will work for Sprint.
I would ASK him for more details.
Are you able to see the device first?
Also would an At&t Note 4 work for Sprint?
Would I have to root or unlock the GSM phone to work on a CDMA network?
If anyone could chime in that'd be great! Thanks!!

May I know where can I get Pixel XL in USA? Any shop selling?
Thanks
I know Verizon stores is selling them, not sure about other carriers. You can do what I did and just order online on the Google Store.
OK thanks. But that will be locked down. Any shop selling other than carrier? I am in USA for holiday.

Sorry, there are no USA resellers for the bootloader unlocked Pixel.
You can only purchase it from Google Store or Project Fi.

Here in New York City can buy them Unlocked Pixel. Google open a new store (Like Apple store) in Spring St but its all sold out.
They found a way to unlock the bootoader for Verizon, so it's only a matter of time where you can buy them from any retailer. However the exploit will only last so long....
I had forgotten that Google wanted to start opening brick'n'mortar stores. Thanks for the reminder. :good:

At the moment, Verizon bootloaders are locked and at the moment can't be unlocked
They are replacing phones with unlocked versions through verizon warranty replacement, hope this helps if you have any issues with your current device.

So, I got a Verizon Google Pixel 2 XL with 8.1.0 & Android 9 waiting to download. The OEM unlocking, under developer options is greyed out. So, this phone has no hope for unlocked bootloader?
Any ideas.....

Exchange it for a google version. Other than that, I'm afraid there is no current, reliable, bootloader unlocking method for the verizon variant device.

If you purchased it from eBay, then your in a pickle. I have no idea what their policy is, or if the seller would even consider it. As far as bootloader unlocking it, I'm sure there are some folks that can/will do it for a fee, however, as the saying goes....buyer beware :fingers-crossed:
If "OEM unlocking" is greyed out, that means the bootloader is locked and cannot be unlocked. There is no way to hack a P2XL with locked BL to make it unlockable.
If you bought the P2XL directly from Google Store and you requested the "unlocked" version, then Google sent you the wrong one. Send it back and get the one you purchased.
If you bought it from Verizon store or Best Buy, those devices are *always* bootloader locked (buying directly from Google is the only way to get one with unlockable BL). You could return it but you will pay a restocking fee.
If you bought from an individual, you can try to get your money back. But it will be up to the seller to take it back.
UR Right

Never saw what it's like on a Google phone before! I know now it IS the phone I want, & the Pixel 2 XL has dropped dramatically in price. Just make sure NEVER get a Verizon phone!!! I want to order Pixel 2 XL from Ebay or Amazon, but I do not know how to choose the version that can be root. Read that Pixel 2 XL verizon cannot be root. Maybe there is a more complete and accurate list of models of this device that are subject to root and unlock bootloader?

And watch when buying it other than directly from Google. The ads on Amazon or Best Buy will say "unlocked". They mean carrier unlocked, not bootloader unlocked. It has to come from Google to be bootloader unlocked, and you need that to root it.

If you are buying new, it has to come from the Google store. If used that is going to be hard. The best way would be to have the seller send you a screenshot of the allow OEM unlocking. Its in developer options and will be blue like mine like below. There are resellers on swappa that will know what you are talking about. Private sellers may not know.

An easier method, though it assumes the seller has the box, is to ask if there is a SIM ID barcode on the box. Only Verizon P2XL boxes will have one, and it will be present in addition to the ESIM ID barcode.
If a SIM ID is present do not buy.

Verizon locked your phone, and locked you in at the same time. Like others have said you bought the wrong variant of the P2XL. Maybe you feel you were/are forced to buy the wrong variant because you cannot buy an unlocked phone to escape the clutches of the Red Devil, but you would be wrong. Buying a phone subsidized by Verizon (getting the phone up front and paying for it on-contract for 2-3 years) is no different than just financing it from a reputable source. Finance any unlocked phone you like. At that point you are free to stay with Verizon until your contract is up and then go to any other carrier you like. Hardware good. Verizon bad.

There are exceptions, as VZW did not carry the Huawei 6P but it does work, very well I might add, on their network. The downside of using a non-VZW device on their network is you lose some of the goodies that come with a VZW supplied device (free vzw cloud, asurion insurance, etc).

As a VZW user myself, I found that in order to root / mod any recent device offered by Verizon, you MUST buy from the manufacturer (unlocked).
Google has many offers similar to VZWs payment structure with 0% interest for two years, or you can buy it outright as I did and not mess with payments.
If you're stuck using only the devices offered through a VZW retailer, I don't think you're going to be rooting / modding your device anytime soon.

I guess it really comes down to your priorities. If you are willing to consider phones not sold by Verizon (but still CDMA compatible) you could start by looking HERE for some ideas. Although being unlock-able is a requirement, it doesn't guarantee dev popularity... so you would need to cross check your top choices here on XDA. Just go into the respective forums and have a look around at the number of ROM's/Kernels, etc. (TWRP/Magisk support is critical, too) for each respective phone. If Android 9.0 and regular functionality and security updates are important, you may find yourself circling back to the Pixel2 again. Prices will drop even more when the P3's hit. If you go this route I strongly recommend you buy directly from Google as your warranty experience will be far superior across the board than if you buy from anywhere else. Financing is available.
Thanks everyone, I got the Verizon edition for half price from Best buy, on payment plan. I'll be looking at Motorola or something like that now. The pixel is great but I miss my themes and ROMs

When you say Huawei 6P do you mean the Huawei built Nexus 6P? If so I'm pretty sure that won't work. Verizon is notorious for not allowing phones that they don't sell to be actived on its network even if the phone fully supports the network. I know for a fact that Verizon won't allow the Nexus 5X on its network. Unless Verizon has changed things since last November.
