[Q] Battery draining at 8% an hour, normal? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey, everyone!
So my phone's been having a few issues, and I've been trying to figure out the cause, but to no avail.
I've had my S3 for about a year (ran stock ROM for a month, then switched to Paranoid, then Quantum, and now SlimKat) and I noticed my battery life decreased significantly, namely after I started using Fast Charge, so I promptly disabled that. I used to be able to leave my phone on idle for about 2 days at a time before the battery finally gave out, and recently my battery was barely lasting 3 hours, which really isn't good. I'd charge my phone to 100%, go to sleep, and by the time I woke up (I sleep on average 8 hours) my phone would be completely dead.
I bought a replacement battery (of which I'm pretty sure is genuine, but there's no real knowing), but I noticed my battery's still draining pretty quickly. More specifically, according to BetterBatteryStats, it's draining at 8.4%/hr on idle. My phone's gone from 98% to 75% in the last 2 hours with me only turning the screen on three times for the span of maybe 5 seconds each to check the battery level.
Any recommendations? I charge my phone with my PC and PS3 via USB with two different cables, if that's relevant at all.
Also, the apps I have installed are Skype, Facebook, BBS, Chrome, Snapchat, and a bunch of games to keep me entertained on long bus rides.
Also, for those with Bell, how much would they charge to possibly replace the phone in case someone else is going? I still have a year before my contract allows me to get a new phone.
My current phone is the I747M, running the latest SlimKat version and kernel.
Attached are screenshots from BetterBatteryStats.

UPDATE: I ended up installing QuantumROM again, plus the latest LeanKernel, and I went from 80% battery to 20% battery idle in the span of 12 hours, which isn't as nice as I'd like, but is LEAGUES better than it was, considering it used to completely die in 4-5 hours of idle time.
Any tips to squeeze out a bit more battery life without sacrificing a ton of performance? My governor is interactiveX and my scheduler is ROW.

It sounds like something is keeping your phone from getting into deep sleep. That program will help you find it. Figure out what is causing the wakelock and you can probably use privacy guard in your ROM to block wake up / keep awake for that app or service.

From what I've checked, it seems to be from Google Play Services, but I've done everything in the book (Wakelock Terminator, running an init.d script to disable Google Play Services, etc.) but I'm still running into issues. and SystemUpdateService is 88% of why my phone's not going into deep sleep. The other two are AudioMix (5%) and google.android.gms ConfigFetchService (2%).
Any suggestions?

I have same issues using quantum rom,I switched to touchwiz roms because they are more battery efficient, 8% / hour is not normal,My battery drains 1-2% / 6 hr ( with flight mode) in touchwiz roms.

I've never run quantum, but if it has privacy guard you can use that to block this. In privacy guard enable showing built in apps. Find Google play services in the list and long press it. In the list that opens deny keep awake and wake up for Google play services.
I've always got the best battery life out of ROMs based directly on aosp like slim. Cm and other cm based ROMs are a close second.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!
I ended up figuring out some weird convoluted way to disable Google Play Services, but something's still preventing me from deep sleeping completely. When I checked this morning, my Deep Sleep was at 66% (better than 0) and I only lost about 10-15% battery.
I'll keep you all updated!

[Q] My battery life is atrocious [CM 7.0.3]

Last straw was last night. Had 13% battery life left before softball last night and knowing I wouldn't use my phone during the games, but having been burned by my battery before, I shut my phone down before the games. Played softball for two hours then turned my phone on. Booted up long enough to see that I had 0% battery before it shut down again.
What am I doing that's causing this? I get maybe 10 hours out of a Seido 1750mAh battery. I have no apps that do background updates. I keep my display on "dim" most of the day. I go most days without even making or receiving a single phone call!
Ideas? Thanks for any help. This is really frustrating.
Cyanogen Mod 7.0.3
Kernel: 2.6.37.4-cyanogenmod+ [email protected] #27
Baseband: 2.05.00.06.11
Seido 1750 mAh battery
I'm not sure, but there have been claims that Seidio inflates their numbers and their 1750 mah battery isn't actually that much. Has this been something that has been happening gradually? Like your battery life is degrading over time and now it's at an unbearable point?
Try a different Kernel or Baseband. I'm using MIUI w/ incredikernel and get great battery life w/ stock battery. I'm also using 2.15.00.07.28 Baseband. I use SetCPU to set a screen off profile of 245min 245max, havn't noticed any lag while having that set. If you wish to update your radio easily you could download "Inc Bits" from the market. Great app has all of our phone radios, all you need to do is rename it and move to SDcard.
Agree with tcberg2010 here. Try incredikernal with Smartass governor. Check out vipermod. I was having intense battery issues which i posted about a week back. My suggestion would be to get spare parts app and check partial wakelock to see if anything is keeping your phone up. I use maps occasionally and it turns out that it was causing partial wakelock constantly. After disabling a locations and gps i am back to standard battery life. Looking forward to next cyanogenmod update, hope there is a fix...
If your phone died while it was turned off, then I would either have battery tested or get another one it could have an internal problem.
Yeah unless the phone some how got turned on in your pocket (I'm not sure how, but it has happened to me), There should be minute if not no drain on the bat at all. I'm not sure where you can get it tested, but I would certainly be wary about that bat. Do you still have the stock 1300? I'd check to see if it looses charge while the phone is off. Maybe there's a short in the phone.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm at about 10.5 hours right now and 7% left with the only thing I've changed being the battery. I went back to my stock battery. Going to try a new radio first, then vipermod.
try the "battery moniter widget" from the market. it keeps perfect tabs on your battery, can tell you the REAL mA of your battery, temp, usage stats, all kinds of stuff. it's really a good app to use to watch your battery...you could also use MIUI, and watch your battery life almost double. it's superior to CM7 in so many ways. and the people that have used both, i think pretty much agree...

[Q] CyanogenMod 11 is killing my battery. Help!

I've looked all around for any thread similar to this - couldn't find it.
Long story short. I rooted my phone and installed CM11 (Sept 14). My battery used to last around 30 hours. Now I'm lucky to get 8 or 9. Without any use, I lose around 40% during the night (7 or 8 hours). I used to lose 7 or 8%.
Is anyone having the same issue?
Go to the battery tab in settings and find out what is using the most energy. You can also use greenify to monitor usage.
Or try diff kernel..
what are your governor settings, and clock settings?
You can use Better Battery Stats to track down what is causing the drain.

Clock is stock, governor settings are at "interactive". I got Better Batery Stats. "Android OS" is draining my system. There were a couple of modules mentioned. I was expecting a rogue app was eating up all processor cycles.
I downloaded the Deep Sleep widget. My phone had a 35% deep sleep time.
I'm pretty sure it's doing something all the time that is draining the battery...
So I installed DS Battery Saver Pro. All I can say is WOW. Battery drain went from 7% (on stock Galaxy Note 3) to 40% on CM11 to...
0% overnight / 97% Deep Sleep
That's right. 0%!!! I can't believe it! Battery life is so much better and performance is basically the same.
I guess something was keeping the phone awake with CM11, and DS Battery Saver Pro fixed it!

Okay, it seems like the app Greenify helps a bit but doesn't completely solve the problem. Try that and let me know what you think.

Not that this will help you, but I had the same issue. Normal usage would drain before the day was over...went to Tweaked 3.55 and problem went away, which sucks because I LOVE CM11 minus the camera...for some reason I think the camera is always better with stock based roms.
DS Battery Saver Pro only did so much. With normal usage my phone simply won't last a whole day. CM11 is killing it. I have nothing else installed...
Found it!
So, I found what was eating up the battery. The battery stats didn't help. DS only saved some of the battery at night. The phone was simply consuming obscene amounts of energy while on and every indicator seemed normal.
It was ART!
I went back to stock Touchwiz and hated my phone so much I was this close to selling it and getting a OnePlus. But I reinstalled CM11 and decided to add apps one by one to find out what was going on. Everything was fine and yesterday I finally enabled ART in the end. The phone wasn't any faster, but it went from spending 3-4% battery at night to 45%. And during the day, it dropped 1% every 2 of 3 minutes with light use.
So, there it is. Blame ART and never enable it on CM11 if you have battery issues.

Horrible battery life on newish S4 Mini ("best" performance <3h)

Hey guys,
after dropping my beloved Nexus 4 to the concrete floor in May, I bought a new S4 mini in the electronic market because of it's decent size and all the fuzz about having a very good price-performance-ratio.
After a few weeks I already was fairly disappointed.
On an average work day (without WiFi) and little use (~30min OSD) the battery wouldn't last a full day. I tried the usual things like turning off GPS, bluetooth and using Wifi whenever possible (turning it off, when not in range), etc. I also used the App greenify which boosted my deepsleep in Wakelock Detector to stable 85+%.
When using GMaps/navigation my phone is getting hot (~50°C) and battery is drained within minutes. When trying to navigate out of the city (<15min navigation) one day my phone was discharged within 3 hours after a full charge. I got Wakelock Detector, Better Battery Stats and Battery Monitor Widget installed.
The only thing I found out, that when I am connected to Wifi the drain is a lot lower 1-2%/hour compared to when I am using 3G/H+ which results in 7-15%/hour (both when not using the phone), although there is no problem with signal quality. Recently my phone started to bottoming out rly hard when hitting the 20% mark. From there I can watch the battery dropping to 0% within a few minutes.
Things I tried so far:
- turning off features that are not in use (GPS, bluetooth, Wifi when not in range)
- make sure phone gets into deep sleep/greenify apps
- recalibrate akku
- reduce brightness & disable auto-brightness
Setup:
GT-I9195 bought in May 2015 from electronic market chain
CM 12.1 (Android 5.1.1, serranoltexx)
Standard CM Kernel
Baseband I9195XXUBML4
I can provide Screenshots from BMW, WD and BBS. Any ideas how to solve this or what else I could do?
Probably you should use something like better battery stats, to check
- if a service is going mad, then turn it off with disable service to test (most times happens with unclean flash)
- if you have an app with wakelocks
If you can't find anything that way, might be a hardware fault.
Personally if I came across this problem I would return the phone to stock Android and do some tests, see if the same happens again. CM12.1 can have issues across different same model phones. Try the Samsung Phone Info app to see how old your phone is. I'm guessing it was second hand? Some older revisions of the Mini had battery problems. Maybe a new battery is needed? Maybe.. As for the battery draining 20%-0% in minutes I have also suffered this on a brand new March 2015 device. Not all the time though it only happens with randomly once a week. But I put that down to the battery not been fully calibrated and then drained and recharged over the next 3 4 days, as I use a spare battery and swap out the batteries regularly which means my battery is very rarely calibrated.
All that said though I can easily get through an entire day if not 2. And using stock I'm able to get 4 and a half hours on average every time, maybe 4 hours of screen on time when using 3G a lot and GPS etc.

I have had the same problem as you.
I return twice my phone to vendor. But they could do anything.
I solved it with undervolting and underclocking my phone (only the low frequency).
I read from someone, you can undervolting 150 millivolt.
My experience, is undervolting 125 milivolt. and underclocking the low frequency at the minimum.
You didn't feel any difference, behalves that the phone is cooler and battery live is better.
My WiFi and Bluetooth are always on. I don't have to recharge my phone during the day.
It is so effective en transparent that I don't understand why Samsung didn't do it natively.
Hey,
I tried to apply some of your advice and flashed the newest stock rom for S4 Mini (Kitkat ...COE4).
In that process I recognized that the Baseband is not updated by CM and that the one that was installed when I bought it was fairly old (from 2013). Do you think that this might be part of the problem? (I sort of hate the Samsung Rom)
This week when working and not having Wifi all day, I managed to get 2h of SOT and still had around 25% left which I couldnt have gotten before imo. I only lose 1-4% per hour when the phone is not used. But still thats not pretty good, when ur saying you can get 4h with GPS and everything. I also didnt use GPS. And today when I restarted my phone it just went from 40-ish % to 15% without any reason. Any more ideas?
I installed BetterBatteryStats today and will try to give some more insight the next days. Wakelock detector said that I had 85% deep sleep (timeframe 1 day 2 hours).

No I bought it new from a electronic store (Media Markt). The app says that is was made on Oct 19th 2014 in Vietnam and that it is original/not refurbished.
How much do you gain by undervolting (SOT or % per hour when idle)?
How do you do it?
maybe the best way is to downgrade by flashing CM11 for example ...
(another way with stock + Alexax kernel + own debloat&freeze ... )
I have the same consumption problem with Resurection Remix LP too ..... very strange !
Lollipop is supposed to be less angry than Android 4.X.X ... but it seem have problem somewhere for our S4-mini sources maybe ,i don't know ...
This night I did some BBS tests:
Setup:
Stock Rom I previously installed (see posts above)
charged phone during evening
set up custom timepoint before I went to sleep
WLAN disabled
all apps greenyfied except those I deemed significant that they keep running (Whatsapp, calendar, Swiftkey, BBS, BMW, etc). Forgot newly installed app hoomn.
I had to upload the logfile to pastebin because it was too long for the xda forum: pastebin.ca/3256568 (I am not allowed to post URLs, sorry)
I lost 14% of battery during 9hrs (-1,6%/h). That's probably not too bad?
93% deep sleep, 33min awake time
Weird things I discovered/things I did not understand:
- negative Voltage loss?
- Wifi runtime 100% although I disabled it
- dominant wakelocks (count > 100, all of them < 30s): Alarm Manager, RILJ1, *net_scheduler*, GCM_CONN, ContextManagerWakeLock, Event Log Service, AlarmManager (com.sec.spp.push.Samsung Push Service), SyncLoopWakeLock, GCM_HB_ALARM
- dominant KWLs (count > 100): ril-fd (25min), bam_dmux_wakelock (13min), radio-interface (7min), PowerManagerService.WakeLocks (3min), mmc1_detect (1min), alarm_rtc, alarm, sec-charger-monitor, smdcntl0, pm8921_soc_lock, power-supply, KeyEvents, smsm_snapshot, qmuxd_port_wl_0, qmuxd_port_wl_1, smdcntl1, mmc0_detect
- Alarms (>20): ccc71.bmw (Battery Monitor Widget), android, com.google.android.gms, com.sec.spp.push
any ideas/assessments?

Battery Draining very fast - Hardware issue or software ?? help me please :)

Hi all,
So i got a HTC 10 UAE edition from a guy two days before. He was selling it at a reasonable price and i bought it from him.
The battery was draining quite fast and i thought it might be a software issue and i installed venom rom, but problem still existed, so i turned back to stock 2.41.401.41 (Which was very hard though) .
Still the battery is draining so fast. The charger came with the phone( Quick charger ) was also not working and now i'm facing the phone's battery is draining so fast. I'm very confused whether that guy have cheated me or not. If this is a hardware issue i think i have to contact that guy soon.
adb battery stat gave me 2580mah full charge capacity and here, i'm attaching the GSAM battery logs.
Please help me on this
Thanks
Edit: Since the original charger isnt working, im using a oppo 5v- 1A charger, is dat matters on battery drain?
Mine was doing the same as yours, quick charge also stopped working. I changed the cable and it solved it for a few weeks, but the drain started again and quick charge stopped again. Tried ruu etc but no luck. I've sent mine in for repair under warranty and should get it back Monday. My guess is either the charging port is faulty or motherboard but will find out next week.
I was having the exact same problem. I downloaded an app called Lspeed (It's also on the playstore) and did some tweaking in that app as well as used the Enable doze for GMS Magisk Module and now my kernel and android system are on par with each other as far as battery drain goes. Not sure why there are only a handful of people that experience this problem but i'll edit this post with screens of my lspeed config if you want to give that a go!
Edit: Config uploaded. Some of those options are personal preference but take a look around and test it out. What you'll most likely want is to enable the light doze optimization and disable the debugging. That will most likely help in your situation.
Very strange, I'm experiencing this issue too, always receive around 2-3hrs of screen on with very high kernel use during standby. Tried flashing Leedroid, Element X to no avail.

I'm currently running on pure stock. Will try this method soon. How was your battery standby before doing the tweak ?
Have you tried wiping cache? Mine drains fast depending on the load, which is usually pretty heavy daily. Plus, I don't dim my screen much. Never knew the advice command for battery. I gotta try that.

Okay, so I got fed up with the battery life I've been getting and have looked more into it, I've managed to reclaim a lot of the longevity I had before updating to Nougat without hampering UI fluidity. For reference, I'm using Leedroid 3.9 with Element X v1.08 and was getting around 2hrs screen on, android system and kernel had the highest usage under GSam.
bilibox has the right idea, my idle drain was very high, L speed and Greenify both have options to enable a more aggressive Doze which worked pretty well, I lose ~10% battery overnight vs a shocking 20-30% before. I still felt battery drain was too high when active, I combined ivicask's PNP mod (balanced) with some little governor tweaks in EX Kernel manager, basically, I'm using interactive on the little cluster and elementx governor on the big cluster (which tends to be slightly more conservative in my uses). I also set min performance to 0% and downclocked the big cluster to 2Ghz, I'm focusing on these cores since they were draining a lot of power in my case.
It's not a super extensive list of tweaks nor something we haven't seen before, but I manage around 3.5hrs of screen on now which gets me through the day. Before I would have to top up around early afternoon, the phone is also really smooth and I'm happy with how everything is running. I hope this helps some people out!

Still its bad that a 3000mah battery with a smaller screen compared to other flagships giving a very low battery backup just because of software bug. From reviews, i can see that MM is giving fine SoT as well as standby. One thing i really cant is the standby. I cant even go out for a day trip. The battery will die in just 10-12hrs even on standby.

I restore my phone and did all updates again. My battery still seems to drain very quick .in an hour with some navigation, and little screen use It went from 20% to 1 percent.
I've taken excellent care of my HTC. Before this, I had HTC 8 and loved it, until right at the 2-year mark, a small area of the screen stopped working.
This is the second time I` experience this, and sadly there won't be a third., especially after new HTC removed the headphone jack like the iPhone ... RIP HTC
Well to be honest the past couple days were to weird to me usually i get 5 - 6 SOA over 13 hours
now i get 3:30 - 4 SOA over 13 hours, same usage, and i have noticed that google service consume most of the power, i have installed doze program and kept my eye on GSM battery Monitor, after all the google service kept the kernal wake up for a long time, and keep running the hardware on the full abilities

I have uninstalled ForceDoze and Gsam Bettery this morning but still feeling that there is something wrong, i might do some battery calibration on my free time, because i charge my phone only for 90% and it did not get lower than 20% i feel like i am losing the battery capacity
Was having the same issue, and had been searching for weeks to try and solve this. Tried rooting, factory resets, ROMs, everything.
For me the issue was Google Sync, in particular Contacts and People syncing. I disabled those and everything is back to normal. There was a program called Google Contacts Sync (Apps > Show System > Google Contacts Sync). I cleared the data on that, and then went into Accounts and Sync and turned everything off. That fixed the battery drain. I have tried turning back on Gmail, Keep and a few others and still have great battery.
I have the same issue and I don't know how to fix it. Please help

Did BTJ3 wreck your battery life too?

I had excellent battery life before the Sept & Oct updates, now the battery life is terrible. Used to have an overnight sleep rate of about 0.5-0.7% /hr, now it's around 1.5%/hr.
Also, AccuBattery consistently estimated my battery capacity at around 3850-ish (I charge to 78% and pull the plug) but now it's lucky to get to 3650.
I've been through a ton of settings, disabled Background on plenty of apps, set up as many as possible in Sleep & Deep sleep.
Did Samsung screw up these updates up for anyone else?
I think I've worked it out - I don't let Google Play auto-update apps (too many times new versions are total ****e) and there were about 48 apps waiting to be updated. There were a bunch of other Samsung and Google apps that were updated without my intervention before this.
After hitting Update all and cancelling the two I don't want updated then a reboot, the standby consumption calmed down a lot. Was it the Google Play queue or maybe the other apps needing the reboot? Dunno, but I'm glad the sleep battery drain is almost back to where it was.

I think I've worked it out - I don't let Google Play auto-update apps (too many times new versions are total ****e) and there were about 48 apps waiting to be updated. There were a bunch of other Samsung and Google apps that were updated without my intervention before this.

Wow, that is impressively low.
What Power Mode settings are you running?
At the very least update one apk at a time and never do a firmware update until it's been proven especially if you have a fast, stable platform...

Medium Power Saving,I use it while I don't play games (rarely).
Story continues ... battery drain was getting quite high on standby, despite me barely using the phone and mucking around with Medium Power Saving, Adaptive Power, etc. Got quite low the other night (20%) so I put it on Supercharge and decided to turn it off while charging to 100%.
I know, I usually avoid charging past 80% but I've only done 3-4 full charges since getting the phone in April.
As soon as it hit 100% I unplugged, power up, did all the usual unlocking, checked the battery was on Optimised and Adaptive Power Saving was On, then closed the cover for the night.
Next morning I was really shocked to see it had only dropped about 5%. The phone has been running nearly 46hrs and the battery level is at 50% ... nice.
Accubattery stats
21% screen on 40m
29% screen off 45h5
Deep sleep 41h39m
So maybe the battery needs a bit of exercise every now and then ... ?
It's been a few weeks but I finally tracked this down to the recent A10 updates screwing up 5GHz Wi-Fi somehow.
I saw a clever suggestion about putting the phone into Airplane mode, so I tried that with the battery charged to 100% and in the morning after about 10hrs the battery had only dropped 2-3%, which was amazing (to me).
So over the following weeks i alternated between airplane on/off and 2.4GHz vs 5Ghz Wi-Fi, to confirm what I was seeing, finally abandoned the 5GHz connection and the standby battery drain has been much more to my liking.
One of the tests involved leaving the phone on 5GHz with it sitting on the desk beneath the Ruckus WAP all day and the battery drain was again quite high despite having a super strong signal, so it's not a signal strength issue.
I can't imagine what Samsung have done to screw up the 5GHz channels but I'm staying away from updating to A11 for at least 6mths, maybe never.
OneUI 3 and A11 seem to have introduced a load of other problems which I'm sure will settle down in time, but I don't need to be one of their guinea pigs.
Tks to all that participated here, suggestions were definitely helpful.
