A lot of fuss was made over the "ImageSense" chip in the One series, especially the One X and One S, but when an HTC tweet mentioned a blog post (also by HTC employees) where they took it out on a trip and took some shots I was eager to see the results. The first impression was that the thumbnails looked great so I clicked through to the full-size images and ......... that's where I sat in shock at how really poor the image quality was. There was noise in around 50% of the image, lack of detail in most areas and it just plain sucked.
I commented on the article, as did others, all commenting on how poor it was for a supposed fantastic camera with all new ImageSense chip. After a while the person who posted the photos replied saying they were uploaded in reduced quality to save on load times and that full versions would be uploaded soon. At that time the full size images that I'd seen were removed. No new images were posted the last time I looked and as I now own the One X I've seen for myself that, sadly, this is the actual quality of the camera. No matter the light or subject I have noise and lost detail all over.
Is my experience here unique or are others finding that, for a supposedly fantastic camera phone with new chip specifically for photos, it just plain sucks?
Photos taken with HOX have a lot of noise indeed.. Sadly, HOX camera cannot compare to my ex iPhone 4s' camera.
EDIT: you might wanna look into that thread.
It's not that the sensor is bad, it's just really really bad compression on the pictures that is applied by the stock camera. Using a different camera app yields much sharper images.
Can you be more specific what app are you using? Isn't compression done before image even reaches any app?
Of course not, compression is performed only when dumping the image to storage. Until then, it's only RAW memory.
I'm facing the same issue now.. I must try another Photo APP...
Any ideas?!
Maybe is the compression you can try to use camera fv-5

I also feel that the camera isnt up to the standard as my old iPhone 4 was. Thought it was just me.
Anyone have a suggestion for a good app that will decrease noise on photo's?
I have problem too

Camera of HTC One X is one of the worst camera since HD2, even HD2 has better camera. The only good thing here is HDR mode, which is also not so good.
One X produces photos with so much noise, dynamic range varies and contrast is bad, and on direct light cant compare even with old Blackberry phones like 9780 or 9800 torch. Colors turn to be cold/blue. Photos are washed out etc etc There are no life in photos.
One X and One followed with BIG ADVERTISEMENTS and MARKETING CAMPAIGN, they are not good camera phones. I was naive to buy it. Now im searching to replace with Incredible S or Sensation even HD2.
HTC Sensation equiped with much better camera. Blacberry 9810 and 9800 has 10x better cameras. Not to mention N8 or E7 Nokia.
Yes, but your sig still says bless HTC..
I changed to SGS4 and the camera is the best i'e seen.. think about doing the same. No hope for Hox..

I have made AWESOME pictures with the cyanogenmod camera APP. And now I reverted to stock and the only difference I get is that images are no longer sharper but after an auto enhance edit I get some pretty nice colors and I'm glad with the pictures again.. I wasn't glad with the macro shooting of cyanogenmod and I wasn't glad with the system overall that's why I got to stock.
Thanks ,Dan.

funny but im not giving up on HTC as ive mentioned.
i will buy sensation or one v.
it is very bizzare company politics of HTC to announce three new models One v, one s and One x and ONE V which is 'value model' has way better camera than 'superior' A class ONE X.
and what we are... donkeys... it is all about some software (loaded on purpose because of that competition stuff) i suppose, same chip, same camera software two different photo qualities,
Second day on my HTC One X, I feel its very good in terms of everything but Camera. I had an Amaze 4G before. HOX's camera is way too noisy compared to Amaze's. Does any one else feels the same? I have a UK model HOX bought off eBay. Please tell if i am wrong regarding the camera. It might be my personal issue. If you think that, please suggest any way to get rid of the noise. I somewhat experience it in the day light too.
Below are the two images one from HOX and other from Amaze. (Sorry for these pics, that is my hukka coal)
From left 1st one is from HTC One X and 2nd is from Amaze.
You can definitely see the difference of noise and resolution.

Lets start with the most basic question, did you focus correctly and did you hold your phone steady without too much movement?
Agree on some points that the picture captured with amaze was better with less noise. Had Amaze before SGS Note. Also, the dedicated camera button was excellent with Amaze for caps. The video quality was superb and lot smooth.
Good thing about One X is the shutter speed. The Full HD capture with One X is not smoother like Amaze also with less bitrates.

@Op,

Amaze, never heared of it, don't care neither.
This is HTC One X forum, and not everybody jumped from Amaze to One X.

Let's not exaggerate, the One X camera is at least 400,000 times Better than that on the DHD (yes, intentional irony)
But, the DHD had a CRAP camera.
And the One X, has one of the best, albeit with too much compression.
Absolutely not. My One X pictures are extremely noisy, while the DHD pictures are nice and crisp. The DHD pictures are far more superior, its not even close.

Tip, change ISO to 100 and make a picture during daylight with your HOX.
Bye bye noise.

Ok so people agree on the noise problem. I wanted to hear that. I thought my phone problem. Did any one try the HTC Amaze 4G Camera Application on HOX? I am not rooted currently and not willing to do the same until I figure out a way for bad photos, then i can decide whether or not to sell off HOX. Please can anyone do that for me?

the DHD has an Atrocious camera.
While the One X puts out very impressive pictures, crisp clear and vibrant, while being realistic.
Are you using the camera right? You aren't holding your hand over the lens are you?
no problem with mine, no noise for me, but I do know how to take photos with a camera...

If that's really the case and you're not just trolling, either you have a faulty HOX or you are completely clueless when it comes to using the camera. I've come from a DHD to a HOX and the improvement is staggering.
We have enough existing camera threads. Please use on of these instead of creating a new thread.

Since both devices have the same HTC ImageChip DSP, they both should perform the same, right? Apparently no. According to PhoneArena, "The HTC One S takes slightly oversaturated photos with good contrast and amount of detail. The colors are colder in the case of the One X, and it has more accurate color representation with white balance a bit off in some shots." To me, the shots look better on the One S. You can check it here: http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/HTC-One-X-vs-HTC-One-S_id3005/page/3
Any idea how to improve the one x's cam?

Hi mate, I havent heard the One S is better before, but shall take a read of that link.
But I have asked this question before, and didn't get an answer. (NOT HERE ON GOOGLE!)
I wanted to know, surely theres some tweaks etc you can perform to get the most out of the camera, but I'm no means a camera nerd and havent got a clue what makes a picture better, apart from MegaPixel and ive been told thats nothing to do with quality, just how big you can blow it up.
Anyone have any tips for improving the HTC One X cam?
**edit** : looked at your link.
I definately agree the HTC One S pictures are alot better. What gives?

Thanks mate, taken a look but I'm not on a custom ROM :/
I think im going to HAVE to root my device soon, once I get over the nerves of no warranty !!
Actually, I do know for sure that this is due to crappy JPEG compression. (You can use a third party app like Camera Zoom FX) But still if it is because of that, and the One S is using the SAME camera and software shouldn't it be about the same?

hi dudes...i had htc one x 1 month ago...i install any hq mode & other camera app...problem is not just about detail...it`s about pinky shadow...bad color balance..& dark & pink cover over all photos...in low light or outdoor light...there is no mod that can solve it..it`s hardware problem...i have htc one s now..& must say that it`s powerfull cameraphone...& results are same as iphone 4s & xperia s & better than galaxy s2 that hi had last year...
There's no way around it, the camera on my M8 GPe sucks. I even had to switch to my old Nexus 4 just now to get a picture that was decent. This was mainly due to the Nexus 4 lighting the flash while focusing which the M8 GPe doesn't. Not sure why, they should work the same...
But I believe the overall quality was better on the few pictures I took while I was on stock. So is this possible to fix? With a new camera app maybe?

Can't say I much disagree with you here. The One GPe is pretty damn nice except for the camera. The Sense version of the camera that I played with in the store was better. My problem is that the flash doesn't seem to illuminate subjects at all, particularly if you need to take a photo of a business card or wine label in a darker room. As a result, I've been using VSCO much more often (which I generally used only for 'artistic' subjects. Sorry I don't have a better solution for you.
Google should force the manufacturers to give out all apps included in the stock versions through Google Play and make them available to the GPe versions...
I hope Android Silver will be the solution for this problem.
Stock Google camera sucks donkey balls. Excuse me for my choice of words but it's true and we all know it. A big weakness of any GPE phone or Nexus phones for that matter.
i will agree its not the best, BUT are we taking pro shots here ? its a mobile phone not a camera

That's actually the point. I'm not taking pro shots by any means and it's still not usable pictures. Last time I couldn't get the focus right since it doesn't flash the LED during focus. I'm not sure why anyone would accept blurry pictures no matter what they were supposed to be for.
Phones of the same price gets better pictures and cheaper phones with stock Android gets better pictures. And when HTC makes a big deal about "ultrapixels" we are entitled to complain.

I actually made direct comparison phots between a GPE Camera and the Sense camera and the pictures were pretty much identical. The photos only seem a lot better in sense camera because the viewfinder shows better pictures. If you actually take them and look at them in the gallery, they are pretty much identical.

My personal opinion is that it's harder to get a good picture with GPe. Slower shutter, harder to focus etc. If everything gets right I assume both versions are able to make equally good pictures since it's the same hardware.

i was going to buy Sam note 4, but people persuaded me to get htc m9

Depends on what kind of phone you want. I'd advise you compare the information's to be found on the web and decide which choice would be the best one in you specific case.

To be honest, HTC have done some fantastic work on the camera since its release and now under MM its pretty good in Manual mode and takes some impressive shots and because you have Shutter Speend, ISO, and White Balance... the lack of IOS isnt too bad.. even in Low Light
If you want a Phablet with OIS, and an S_Pen, grab a Note 4, but if you want an all metal device, a camera that requires a little knowledge and awesome speakers running one of the fastest, slickest android skins on the market, grab an M9.

Sorry, i beg to differ. Htc camera is crap compared to samsungs. It does take clear pictures but the quality just isn't samsung. Htc admitted this themselves by backtracking to the ultra pixel from the m8 for the htc10.
As for knowledge.. You answered that yourself.
