I tried going into download mode and then doing "fastboot boot recovery.img" so that I could take a nandroid in it's current stock form before flashing the TWRP recovery. All i got was a "Start Downloading" Prompt and when I'd select it, the device kept saying "Under Flash" over and over again. Any idea of what to do or do I have to take the plunge and flash the boot with the recovery image?

you can't boot recovery
you need to flash TWRP 2.8.6.4 beta
Make a nandroid and save it to your pc
In TWRP Terminal use this command
Code:
mount -t ext4 /dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/system /system
Reboot recovery and your ready to start flashing SuperSU / roms

Update: found the answer plus more details for the other answers above, in this thread.

8. How do I backup stock recovery prior to flashing TWRP?
You can't. The "fastboot boot" command appears to be disabled on the M9's ABOOT, so TWRP must be fastboot flashed over stock recovery. The firmware zip included in the OTA will include a usable stock recovery image. That can be extracted and flashed after stock system is restored so that the OTA can be applied.

You need to be in download mode to unlock the bootloader.
Follow this guide by KingInTheNorth to unlock your bootloader and root.
Just a small note: if you're on a 5.1 stock rom, you need to enable OEM unlock in developer options first.

As long as its not a verizon branded phone, you may be able to unlock it at www.htcdev.com/bootloader.I say may be because im not sure about a demo device, and whats different on that than a regular phone.

the difference is that i can not store any data in the phone. the app named "demo" keeps popping up automatically. and when it does my all data is gone like my contacts, messages, even the pictures.
in settings there are some option which i can not change, like i can not lock the phone or enter in the security section.
The phone is international version, i tried to unlock it from htcdev but for that u must be able to enter in FASTBOOT nd that OEM option in developer setting must be enabled. i am not able to enter any of those. No fastboot option in Settings. nd when i boot to Bootloader mode there is no option like fastboot. i hope this will make u understand what im trying to say! thannks

I dont know if its a demo thing, but general m9's dony even have the oem option in developer settings. There is no fastboot option to select in the bootloader, you just use a cmd prompt on your pc while in bootloader to type fastboot oem get_identifier token. Mabey i still dont understand.
In settings - display and gestures look for daydream and see if it gives you the option to shut it off. Or go to manage apps find daydream and see if you can disable it. I believe demo mode is part of daydream. Also may be called basic daydream. Also look for any other apps that say demo and try to disable them.

[Q] Bootloop, bricked

Hey, i unlocked the bootloader, flashed a CWM (That does not allow me to mount my phone storage to the PC), tried to flash 2 .zips (the Remove menu thingy, and the SuperSU V.0.87) and when i tried to do that it went in a bootloop(or bootstuck? gets to the "HTC One X - Beats Audio screen, and never gets any further) WHAT DO I DO? Help me please!
Hi, i did exactly the same thing and...i got the same result ....Please, anyone knows how to solve it???????
I am guessing you didnt take a backup in CWM prior to flashing the mods? If not, unfortunately, your only solution would be to bring it back to complete stock and flash the RUU that originally came loaded on your phone.
1) Flash stock recovery:
Grab it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1579797
Then Boot in bootloader >> Fastboot and issue the following command (assuming that the offical recovery is named recovery.img): fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
2) Relock Bootloader:
Boot in bootloader >> Fastboot and issue the following command: fastboot oem lock
3) Find and run/flash the RUU for your device, find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1543604
Thanks!!!!! thank to you I managed to unlock my mobile
Can't really tell you what worked, i flashed my RUU but it failed, i tried flashing stock and all that (which i put on there beforehand as CWM can't mount the drive), but in the end it was just persistence that got it, so just keep trying!

I think the Menu removal caused bootloop. I don't have my PC with me if someone can upload the stock Framework-res.apk and SystemUI.apk you could replace that to boot it back again. If nothing works then download one of the Custom ROM (ARHD or LeeDroid) then wipe everything and flash that it should work for you.
End to unlock again?

You should have received a code from HTC when you unlocked, check your email for it. Then you place it in file with fastboot on computer, open cmd prompt, type in fastboot oem unlock and it should unlock.

Copy boot.img into the same folder where the fastboot or fastboot.exe executable file is.
Reboot your HTC One X into Bootloader Mode.
Select Fastboot from the Bootloader menu.
Connect your HTC One X to the computer via USB cable.
Manually flash the boot.imgfile you have extracted earlier. Open a command prompt or terminal on your computer and type the following command:
fastboot flash boot boot.img

as I understand from your statement that you havnt rooted your mobile and you are still at original RUU ROM, if thats true you may have 2 options only ,
1- re-install the official RUU for your device or
2-return it to the repair center

Ignore that, or any advice that says to unlock your bootloader to do so unless you already have unlocked it.
If you are fully stock and are not willing to void your warranty by unlocking or flashing anything report/return it to HTC as a fault.

What a ridiculous statement.
I quote the following from HTCdev...
"Unlocking the bootloader means that you now have the ability to customize software on your device. Please note that changing your bootloader can cause significant issues with your device and once you have unlocked your device, you have agreed to the disclaimer that states a change in warranty status such that in the event you render your device unusable, you are responsible for the recovery of your device, whether by repair or by other means."
Which clearly translates to...after unlocking your bootloader you are responsible (must pay for) any repairs. There is NO qualification as to whether carrier purchase makes any difference ANYWHERE in the T&C's.
There is substantial evidence ALL over the internet and REPEATED advice from ALL quarters that doing so VOIDS the warranty.

You don't need to root to flash a ROM, you just need to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery...possibly upgrade hboot.
A custom ROM will be pre-rooted.

Firstly, are you rooted? To install a ROM, you need to at least root and get a custom recovery like TWRP.
I used this toolkit to root. It also has an adb feature that boots your phone into fastboot or recovery.
If you don't trust the toolkit and have adb installed, you could try this.
Connect your phone and open a CMD window.
Type
adb devices
Make sure the phone is a connected device,
Then type
adb reboot fastboot
This should get you into fastboot and from there you can reboot to recovery if you need using volume and power buttons.
or just use adb reboot recovery to get to recovery straight away.
There are loads of roms available including: ARHD, ViperOne, Insertcoin etc.
Try looking for reviews on youtube or just read about them in these forums and pick one. Your can always wipe your device and flash another if you don't like one.
EDIT: As niorun said below, disable Fast Boot option under Power in Settings or it won't work.

Also be sure to check if your 'Fast boot' option is switched off! You can't boot into Fastboot if its on.
Go to Settings>Power>Fast Boot.

Touchscreen issue seems like a hardware problem and I'm not sure what you could really do about that other than send it in for a repair. If you can't get past the welcome screen, you can't disable the fastboot option so I'm not sure how to get around that.
Have you tried to adb into recovery?

I've never seen that, but before you continue... You want to flash a custom ROM, right?

Guess I am too dumb to root a phone. I select download mode from my boot loader and it goes right back to the bootloader like a infinite loop unless i hit reboot. Maybe this isnt as easy as it sounds
OEM unlock is not even in Developer mode in 6.0.1. HTCdev wouldn't even get you the token without it enabled. Sunshine don't work for Desire 530 as well. How you get it to working?

Steps:
0) Download these files
SuperSu 2.74 - https://download.chainfire.eu/964/SuperSU/BETA-SuperSU-v2.74-2-20160519174328.zip
TWRP - https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24588212152304477 (Experimental build)
SunShine - http://theroot.ninja/apks/SunShine-latest.apk (Optional)
1) Visit htcdev.com and unlock your bootloader
2) boot into download mode (adb reboot download)
3) flash trwp (fastboot flash recovery <twrpfilenamegoeshere>
4) boot into twrp (adb reboot recovery)
5) Go to advanced, then enable sideload
6) flash supersu (adb sideload <supersufilenamegoeshere>
Optional:

It is on my variant, which variant do you have?
jpoblocki77 it not hard to root, but every model phone have a different method, even same manufacturer phone can be different, let alone different AndroidOS version. HTC is usually very good in letting you root their phone. But carrier blocked the process as well, like the Desire 530 for Verizon. They omitted the OEM unlock setting for you to not use HTCdev bootloader unlocked method, thus can allow rooting on your phone. HTC change fastboot bootloader to their download mode when power off and then hit power with volume down.

Yeah no go with this route for verizon, could possibly add support to SunShine for it but I would need a loaner device, demand wont be high enough to warrant purchasing one

Bricked Pixel XL

So I messed up a bit when relocking my bootloader. I relocked the bootloader, and completely forgot that I had the ElementalX kernel installed. Now I'm at a point where my phone wont boot because it has a custom kernel installed on top of a locked bootloader, and I can't boot the phone to enable OEM unlocking. What the hell do I do here?

Doesn't the bootloader need to be unlocked?

You can still do that. If you want to get back to stock, read through this:
https://developers.google.com/android/images
Just make sure you download the correct images and follow the instructions. Read through everything before you start.
Edit: This is dependent on being able to get into fastboot, which, judging from another thread, might not be possible in your situation. Hopefully you still can boot into fastboot using the key commands.

That is not an option. You need to have the bootloader unlocked in order to flash the images. I can't unlock the bootloader because I can't boot the device. I can get in to fastboot, and watch the charging animation, thats it. I can push commands, then it just comes back at me and tells me that I need to unlock the bootloader.
Running "fastboot continue" let me in. I was able to get the bootloader unlocked again.

Awesome man. I need to archive this solution as we all have brainfarts sometimes and it's only a matter of time before myself or someone else stumbles. Thanks for sharing your solution.

I definitely can't take credit for it, I saw it on a PSA thread that jcase posted on XDA regarding this topic. I happened to find the post after somebody mentioned him in my reddit post.

Hey! I'm the guy that mentioned the jcase solution in your Reddit post. Glad you got it fixed.
Anyone have any idea what to do if "fastboot continue" does not work. As I too am stupid and relocked the bootloader. Now all I get is "this device is courpt" when I try to boot it up.

Did you load into bootloader (vol down + power) and try to run "fastboot -w" (to wipe userdata) then "fastboot continue" and wait 10 min. If you still don't boot power down, go into bootloader again and try "fastboot continue" again.

I have tried the "fastboot -w" it says failed and the phone still says courpt. I guess ill just get a replacement. Thanks for the help.
I just want to confirm 100%...flashing stock will not RELOCK bootloader correct? I have a terrible freezing and force closing issue after rooting. I have flashed the stock boot image and tried other kernels but it hasn't helped. So I'm going to flash complete stock but afraid it will RELOCK bootloader
Forgot to mention I have an OTA but the download/install fails every time

This will not work with a locked bootloader. If it did, anyone could flash older firmware and use the bootloader unlock tool. You're screwed once you relock the bootloader with a non stock kernel. Unfortunately for the OP, I suspect he now has a very expensive paper weight.

Op fixed his issue. Read one page back. He got it to boot with fastboot continue.
On a side note. Why the hell is anyone locking their bootloader's.

I think there should be a sticky that not to relock the bootloader before reading the proper instructions or please search the xda forums.
