I have a viper one running so I think it's been deleted but I think there's supposed to be a file in System/media you could delete. Would probably require root.
Might be easier to put a custom rom on.

I just got this phone not even two days ago. I've rooted it but I can't find it in /system/media/audio/ui. I'll install a custom ROM once I'm more comfortable with HTC Sense (which has obviously improved since the days of the Doubleshot).

Go with Viper One, it has lots of useful customizations.
Oh, I think the boot sound might actually be in /system/customize/resource. Check it out.

got a stock evo 2.1 rooted it.. with clockwork installed custom rom and kernel updated to 2.2 everything is okay used romanger to go back between clock work and arom... but still cant get the adb commands to work... actuall just trying to push a spc mp3 file tried replacing with root explorer no go
One thing a lot of us had trouble with going from 2.1 to 2.2 was the su app didn't like being bundled with a rom. Uninstall your su app and install the one from the market.
Let us know if this fixes it.

What is that file used for?
Where is it in the system?
Is that the audio that plays during the boot animation?
yes

yes it does im assuming the stock recovery uses the red exclamation... now i have the yellow one i tried to remount and i get an error.....
so why must we adb on the 2.2 when the 2.1 all you needed was root explorer? to change boot animation and sound.....
The boot animation in 2.2 is a single .zip file. Boot animations are something I haven't gotten into much (on the EVO) so I'm not sure how it was on 2.1 but I'd guess it was more like the Hero where it was a .gif or two and a sound file.
When the boot animation is packaged in a single .zip file you can't just swap out parts of it. You'd have to unzip it, change what you want, and make sure the xml (if there's on in there) is adjusted accordingly. If you swapped the sound file for one that was of the same name you'd probably be fine to rezip and drop the whole zip back in there.
This is pure speculation though. I may be totally wrong. If I were gonna try to customize my boot though that's where I would start.

You can use pushboot found in the development section to change the sound and/or the bootanimation.

Cool, dl'ing virus rom now so I can see exactly what you're working with.
Are we sure you actually do have su permissions and it was just an issue with this boot animation package?
Can you mount your /system as R/W in root explorer?
O/T- nice bike Busa's are some bad bi$%es man. Nothing quite like em really.
I've never felt such unbelievable power as when I've driven a busa, and smooth as hell too! They're so smooth you could convince an idiot it has an electric motor
I sold bikes in FL for a few years, probably the most fun I've ever been paid to have

Same goes for 2.2. Just swap out the files in /system/customize/resource/ I've also seen them in /system/media/ depending on which rom you're using.

[Q] Removed Boot Sound - Permanently gone?

Soon after I rooted my phone on launch day, I manually disabled the boot sound (unfortunately, I don't remember which method). Now, regardless of which ROM I flash, I NEVER have a boot sound. Can someone help me out and let me know how I can about troubleshooting this further?
I've tried the obvious, by checking if the ROM I'm flashing has one (it does), and looking through Root Explorer to add a mp3 in various places, but nothing seems to work. Am I missing something very simple here?
you have to have a music file with the same name and format in the same location as in stock.
Same ROM's have different directory's for boot sound and animations. Check next two..
system/customize/resource (stock rom)
system/media (fresh & calkulin rom)
Edit: Btw I have try it, and does replace animation on Calkulin but still no sound... Which ROM are you using?

This may be my issue. I'm using CM7 (DESTROYED - link to forum below) so there is no system/customize directory. Can I just create it and put something in there? Does it need to be named specifically? android_boot.mp3???

See above - CM7 - Destroyed. I don't have an issue with the animations at all, just the boot sounds.
Stock file is called SPC_animation_final.mp3 but check witch someone who have same rom like you.

NO. You cant do that, must be specific (based on rom)
Tried to create system/customize/resource directory manually, copied the mp3 from system/media that came with the ROM and pasted into that new directory, renamed it android_audio.mp3 with no avail. Still no boot sound.
Tried renaming that to SPC_animation_final.mp3 and same result. Anything else I can try?
Send a PM to person who made that ROM...

Will do - but realize this occurs regardless of which ROM I use. It's not ROM specific.
Thanks for the help all!
Try Fresh ROM, you should have sound saying "freshhh"
Sorry, I was thinking with Sense on my mind.

Really....wow. Was definitely not aware of that! I'll throw Fresh on there again tonight and see what I get. Maybe I've just had AOSP ROMS on there ever since. I thought I for sure tried out a few Sense, but maybe not.
Again - thanks to everyone. I didn't expect to get this much response. Really helps.

Yea, like they said, only sense roms have sound enable, no aosp, CM7 for example, support boot sounds.

Sure enough! Flashed Fresh and got boot sound. I could have sworn I had a Sense ROM in there somewhere in the past 6-9 months, but maybe not. Thanks again guys.

[ROM]ROOTSide (In the Works. First Upload this week)

ROOTSide ROM
Base Flipside ROM with root/busybox/unknown sources enabled. Only thing different in this rom than rooting it yourself is you get to check/uncheck unknown sources. Yes, that means you can turn unknown sources ON and OFF! I have a clockworkmod recovery folder zipped up for distribution, but I want to post a full-fledged ROM zip file for the masses. PM me, and I will send you the ZIP file that I have right now.
What you get:
base install for the flipside (AT&T) with motoblur ready to set up. It is the exact same thing as doing a factory reset, but you get all the benefits of superuser with busybox and the addead feature of having unknown sources checkbox in the settings.
I will work towards a deoxed version this weekend as well.
No custom bootscreen (yet). No custom anything, really.
Almost There
I am currently in the middle of Deodexing the image. I have added in wifi tethering, and ensured it will have superuser and busybox pre-packaged. Next step is pushing this to my wife's phone and not having her get a pretty brick in return. If all goes well, I will be posting the image by morning light (CST).
Fingers Crossed!
Well
Things didn't go too well with my first build attempt. Appears to be a permission issue with the /system folder. I will sleep on it, and give it a second go in the morning. Sorry for the apparent "tease". If you want a faster build, I could use some other devs working with me.
Hey man, sounds like you're doing great! Keep it up...I already found a way to get the root with unknown sources checked, so i'm just gonna wait for the deoxed version! Hope it goes well as you try again.
Current Issues
unable to deodex the following:
/system/app/AABSync.odex
/system/app/blur-services.odex
Will try to load to phone without dodexing those two files. Hopefully all will go well.
Me too...good luck!!

Glad to see some work on this device, I love the form factor but it's obviously not very popular with devs...
Very interested to see this come around. I would like to streamline the wife's phone. Her battery life is a 1/3 of my rooted and flashed X10. Sadly though I am NOT a Dev nor even a cook.
I would have had something sooner, but I ran into issues not related to the ROM. Still working on it. Anybody have an idea for upgrading the CWM from the one we can currently use?
so I was curious, I was able to get to unlock mode with an sqlite thing and it worked just fine for me, but have you been able to knock out the bloat and stuff? cause it sounds like the makings of a custom rom lol
you know what the turtle said.. slowly but surely I will win this race

Several ppl have said they have run into this problem...don't know what the deal is...
Is it possible to get CM7, or it's a problem with a locked kernel?
Ok, I just got a new phone for the Mrs., so I can break the flipside and unbreak it as much as I like.
Time for some real fearless development lol.

So check this out...I messaged the guy at modmymobile and asked how things were going becuase I heard people were having problems getting an updated CMW and this is his response:
"been sittin on the updated cwm recovery binaries and been draggin my feet/takin a break the past week or 2. i'll throw something out soon, but cant commit to a timeframe, sorry."
Looks like things are on the up and up...stay patient everyone
GOOD JOB!!!,
We are waiting for the rom

I can't install CM7, it reboots and locks up, then I have to reinstall froyo. It never worked when I had eclair either.

Phone went pop and won't boot up.

Went on the market and my phone went pop and keeps bootlooping. Now I can get into the bootloader and fastboot mode but nothing else.
Now what should I do any suggestions?
Flash Google's stock images?
It went pop? Trying to picture that.

It made a pop sound, like when an old filament light blew.
restore an old backup try flashing a ROM or flash stock image
Did you do a battery pull? Sounds like it just crashed.
done a battery pull etc. just flashed stock images now and its booted up ill see how everything goes. It was just weird because I was already on stock images so I don't see how what I done made a difference.

Well then that's a bug in your kernel/rom you're currently using. :/. I've also had this too, but haven't seen it for approximately 2 1/2 months (first two weeks it scared the **** out of me and thought it was gonna blow the speaker, lol).

Maybe for the g4 more devs will be pulled towards this phone. You have 2 devs but 1 of them has PC down. Think he just fixed it but it takes a bit to load PC with everything. This phone would have more devs if they owned the phone. Some guys are working blind.
