WTF: what are you doing.
Press Enter to exit.
I want to do s-off so badly and I can give more info. about the phone.
Thanks a lot

That's nice, but you need to be S-Off to do certain things, like manually flashing firmware without reverting to stock, or using firmware meant for carriers other than yours when they update before your carrier.
There are other advantages as well, but these are the ones that S-Off is most used for.

"WTF what are you doing" indeed. Rumrunner never worked for this phone. It was for the M7. Firewater (related, but different from rumrunner) was for earlier M8 versions. It was an online service, and will no longer work now that the dev has stopped supporting it (so don't even bother asking).
For many variants, s-off is not needed to update firmware (as long as Lollipop has been released for your variant). You can just return to stock ROM and stock recovery, and OTA to Lollipop in order to update your firmware.

There are different stock ROMs for different CIDs. Plus, if you have no WiFi, and extreme long boot times, its due to your firmware not being supported by the ROM. You need to find the stock ROM for your current firmware and CID. Then you also need to flash the corresponding stock recovery. After that, you can OTA to the latest firmware.
What is your CID, hboot number, and radio number?

Not only is that make a difference, it makes it easy to update your firmware. Just relock the bootloader and run the new Lollipop RUU: http://dl3.htc.com/application/RUU_M8[email protected]50319A_40.45.C33065.00_F_release_426617_signed_2.exe
Backup any important personal data before RUU, as RUU will wipe the phone.

1) To lock bootloader: Connect phone to PC (PC required for RUU). Boot phone into bootloader-fastboot mode. Open command prompt on computer, and type command: fastboot oem lock
2) Download RUU onto PC. With phone connected, run the RUU exectuble program on the PC and follow the instructions given.
3) Done, drink beer
A little more detail is given here under "Manual system update instructions": http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-att/news/
But seriously, the RUU is a self-explanatory program. It will tell you to confirm a couple dialogue boxes. But aside from that, the program will install a completely clean factory Lollipop software image.
Option Step) Unlock the bootloader again via HTCDev.com, then flash TWRP if you want to root or flash a custom ROM.

You can try it. It certainly doesn't hurts, as it only takes a single fastboot command, and would be faster than going through the whole HTCDev.com process (although that really doesn't take that much time, either).
I know using the same token has worked on past HTC devices. But I haven't seen much (if any) success on the M8. Most (or all?) folks have had to get a new token in order to unlock.

Yes, whatever AT&T apps are present on the stock Lollipop AT&T image will be on your phone. Simply root and delete/freeze, or install a custom ROM to be rid of the AT&T bloat.

You mean the removable SD? It should be safe. But you can always take it out before RUU to be sure it doesn't get touched by RUU.
Any other data on the phone (including the "virtual SD" AKA internal storage) should be backed up, if you want to keep it. Internal storage "might" be okay, but I'd back up anything you want to keep, just in case.

Yes, that is normal. Its expected that RUU will be run once you relock, so it makes the phone this way.
I always forget this, since I s-off my devices (no relocking necessary to RUU with s-off)

After installing this RUU I will have original At&t rom and unroot, relocked bootloader phone. and it will be 5.0.1 lollipop. Am I right? and so firmware will be upgraded tho? That means I can Unlock it, root it and install that android revolution HD rom without having problems.

Yes, yes, and yes.
The only thing above that isn't completely correct, if that after you unlock the bootloader again, just install custom recovery and flash ARHD. No need to root before flashing a custom ROM. Installing a ROM wipes whatever you did with root anyway, and custom ROMs are always pre-rooted. So rooting manually is an unnecessary step. You only need to root "manually" if you are keeping the stock ROM.

Hey guys, I'm running ViperOne 2.4.0. with TWRP recovery installed. For some reason when it boots up, the only thing it shows is an unusual HTC splash screen with red writing at the bottom, similar to if it were booting into recovery, but without the pink "entering recovery" message at the top. What is causing this, can it be changed by adding a new splash screen and/or boot animation? It just stays on this screen for a painfully long time, and then goes black. I tap the screen and it's on, and everything is fine. Thanks in advance.

You don't need S-Off to upgrade firmware with official untouched firmware.
With S-On you can't downgrade.
I believe your device is T-Mobile so grab the OTA.zip from T-Mobile section and extract out the firmware and use it.
Or.. do a proper OTA update.... or use the RUU ... all your answers are in T-Mobile section

First of all, this isn't an "international GSM" forum. It's an HTC One M8 forum. That to me, means that it's for all users of this particular phone. Second, there is nothing that explains in explicit detail how I can fix this particular problem, in the T-Mo specific forum. Anyway, thanks.

That's what I'm trying to tell.
You do have a lower version firmware meant for 4.4.2 (the reason why it takes long time to boot and the black screen)
Firmware 4.4.3 has hboot 3.18.0.000 or greater than 3.16.0.0000

There is no need to go for S-Off if you don't need it. The only thing is once you updated to 4.4.3, S-Off thru SunShine may not work too. (currently)
So it's all depends on what you want/prefer to do :
1. backup your current Viper ROM and revert to stock ROM and do normal OTA (no need to relock bootloader)
Once complete, reinstall TWRP and restore your Viper ROM backup (so no reinstalling hassle)
or
2. revert to stock ROM with RUU (you need to relock bootloader)
Once complete, you need to reunlock bootloader and install TWRP and restore your backup.
or
3. keep/backup your current setup of Viper ROM and flash only the HTC signed firmware either thru fastboot or use a external_sdcard method. Both way you need to relock bootloader and re-unlock again after complete. Always remember unlocking bootloader will wipe your data. So make a backup to PC first. And you need to reflash TWRP too. You can try without relock bootloader first and see as I can't remember whether it will work on an unlocked bootloader or not. If not working, then try again with relocked bootloader.
I guess you can have all the info and files needed in this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2714456

Okay thanks man. None of that sounds like something I feel like doing this weekend. I'll see how I feel Monday and attempt it. Many thanks for your patience.
Speaking personally, I would say if you currently have the ability to s-off you may as well do it and save yourself some headaches. Reason being, if you're s-off you can, for example, flash a modified firmware that doesn't erase your rom or bootloader, which to me, is a lot less confusing and troublesome. You can also do things like flash different radios, animations, etc without installing new roms and what not. Anyways, that's just my opinion and I don't claim to be an expert or anything, just another random user.

If it is a true developer edition, you might try backing up, running one of the Developer Edition RUU's to get back to 100% stock, and then see if you can get the OTA update. If this was a conversion, make sure the CID/MID are correct (which requires S-off).

Don't know where you obtained that info, but its false. S-off is not needed to install any ROMs.
If the phone is a demo unit, you should have stated that right away in your top post. On a previous HTC device (One X) I believe the demo unit was very difficult, if not impossible to make fully functioning. But no idea if the same is true for the M8 demo unit you have.

As I just said in my last response, you do not need S-off to flash any ROMs. If you want help, you need to start actually paying attention to the help that is being given to you. You are also making it very hard to help you, by not giving enough info, and just leaking it out little by little.
You say you can't flash any other ROMs, but that isn't enough information. What happens when you try to flash? Does it fail with an error message? Or flash successful, but doesn't boot? What other ROMs have you tried?
If you want to return to stock to receive OTAs, you will need to find and flash the appropriate nandroid and stock recovery for our CID. Sounds like you just got some random advice, with an unknown link and flashed it. Why on earth would you do such a thing? Stick to XDA, at least here you can go by reputation (number of thanks, Recongnized Contibutor, or Recognized Dev titles).
I glad you got it working .. sorry about the dead link, i wish Mike would leave the old version on his site longer
Hi guys,
need your help.
I have Europe M9, with S-ON.
Rooted it, and installed TWRP, installed custom rom.
How to revert it to full stock? I have sold the phone, and now buyer wants it back to way it were.
Thanks.
Thankfully it's pretty easy; just download your carrier specific RUU to restore to full stock. It's a Windows executable that completely wipes & return your phone to factory state.
I have bought it in Telenor Serbia it was on 1.32.401.15. Should I use any Europe RUU, or do I need to find one exact to match my carrier, and-or my firmware version?
sorry if being noob, but cannot understand this HTC's nonsense (s-on/s-off, cid, hboot...) thats the exact reason why I have sold it. to complicated for me...
I just want it up and running, and trust me, I will never EVER buy another HTC again.

Since there are two different versions of your firmware and I don't know which one is the correct one for you I would suggest you to use this firmware and downgrade to 1.32.401.8. This works because the aboot has not been updated until now. The process itself is very easy:
Download the RUU
Rename it to 0PJAIMG.zip (that's a zero at the beginning not an O)
Copy the file on an external SD card that is formatted to fat32 and not bigger than 32 gb
Boot into download mode
Follow the instructions that are shown on your M9's screen
Congratulation you are now back on stock rom and firmware
You have to use either this way or the fastboot flashing method since there are no RUU executables for the european version.
Btw: No one here forced you to buy the M9. Since it's simply a matter of taste it's up to you which device you choose. I personally prefer HTC's user friendliness in regard to bootloader unlock and rooting (compare it for example with Samsung's Knox system). But this is not the right place for that debate.
Edit: Since my phone is S-OFF I'm not completely sure but you might have to relock your bootloader or step 5 might no work properly.
I have the same problem, i wanna know how to restore it to full stock, i need it just in case something happens to phone and i need to use my waranty. I'm also on telenor serbia. Any detailed instructions would be much appreciated. And one more thing, will i be able to recevie OTA updates even though its rooted ?

Root by itself doesn't prevent OTAs, but changes to the recovery do. As far as I know, acquiring root (for this device) always involves flashing a custom recovery. So OTA aren't possible until the stock recovery is restored.
Do I need to have sd card, or can I flash it from pc using adb?
I have already tried this method, and fastboot gave me an error 22? Maybe I got wrong firmware. Will try again, thanks.

If you are S-ON you can only flash a RUU for your carrier and device. If that's the correct RUU for your phone, it will do it.

So if you're an European open you can't really flash without s off?

There is a RUU list in the General forum. Not all configurations have RUUs, unfortunately, as it has always been with HTC.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/general/htc-one-m9-dump-t3060545
By far the easiest way for the inexperienced is to use the windows exe version linked to a few posts ago .
If you're on 1.32.401.15 then simply flash 1.32.401.17 using the exe version. Simply run windows program and follow on screen prompts .
Main limitation if you're S on is it will only allow upgrade that is to go to higher number as described .
I think there is also a 1.32.401.8 exe but that's an earlier version so if you tried to use that and you were on higher version such as 1.32.401.15 then it wouldn't allow unless you had obtained S off.

One more thing, i received lates OTA update, but it wont instal because recovery isnt stock. I found stock signed, when i flash it will the phone factory reset or not ?
I'm a very new android user, so please forgive my ignorance.
I'm using a sim unlocked AT&T M8 outside USA with a different carrier. Right now, the bootloader is Locked, CID is 11111111 and S-OFF. I've downloaded the official marshmallow AT&T RUU for m8 from htc website.
I follow the install instructions until the update actually starts. Then it stops after about 10-20 seconds and shows Error 155: unknown error and enters into the recovery steps (in the RUU). My current software number is 4.28.502.2 and im trying to update to RUU_M8_UL_M60_SENSE70_ATT_MR_Cingular_US_6.20.502.5
Can someone please help me out with this? I've been trying for over a week now. I will never receive the OTA's since I'm not using an AT&T sim. So RUU is the only other option left. Thanks a lot in advance.

Thanks for your reply man, but im extremely lost here. Could you please guide me step by step? I've downloaded the firmware. Where do I put it? I've tried the adb folder. But it show error: can not locate firmware.zip.
Edit: Another question. Is that firmware applicable for my device?
The firmware is applicable BUT since you're using your device outside USA and not on AT&T carrier, S-Off .. the best thing for you to do is fully convert your device to other region, maybe a EU region or Dev Edition .. more suitable for you.
I read somewhere, with the latest firmware you may have calls problem due to Voice HD implemented by AT&T
If you're interested in converting, I will guide you (when I am available)

That would be very kind of you, thanks. Though, i think I've already messed up my phone. I finally got to update with the firmware in the link. The RUU was going on smoothly as well, until it reached 38% when Error 155 showed up again. The phone then went on to the bootloader screen with no options for fastboot, restore or such. I restarted it and entered the bootloader. My firmware is being shown as 6.20.502.5 but when rebooting the phone it won't go past the screen with the HTC logo. I'd be extremely grateful if you could help me out of this mess.
Also, when i open htc sync man, OS number and HTC Sense number shows up as blank, while the firmware number is shown as 6.20.502.5

Aren't you supposed to uninstall Htc Sync Manager before you run the RUU ?
That was clearly stated in link that I gave you earlier, and you also need PC with USB 2.0
Uninstall HTC Sync Manager but leave HTC USB drivers then try again to run RUU after you put the device on bootloader/fastboot mode.

Yeah I did. I re-installed it later to see if it would show any information.
Most important is RUU must complete 100%, no error 155
I never use Htc Sync Manager, so I don't know what is shown there.

I don't know if it's the problem, but did you try the RUU after unlocking your bootloader as you are S-OFF?
I think it's supposed to be unlocked if you have S-OFF.
Edit:Just got to know that S-OFF devices have nothing to do with unlocked or locked bootloader.
Why don't you try a EU RUU?Mine was also a AT&T device,but I converted it.

Hello there. I kind of made it work. What I did was take the rom.zip from the ruu file and flash it via htc fastboot special. And it worked well. The only problem I'm facing now is that the boot animations are EXTREMELY slow. But once it's past that, everything seems pretty normal. I wiped the cache from recovery but that didn't help. Do you have any suggestions for me?

Meaning the boot animations are slow every time you boot, or just the first time (its unclear from what you've posted)? First time booting after RUU will be slow, due to cache being setup, etc. And clearing cache will cause that process to repeat when you start up again.

Neither of those statements is entirely correct.
With s-off, you can run an RUU with bootloader locked or relocked. Essentially, the check for the bootloader unlocked condition is bypassed with s-off.
But having the bootloader locked still means its locked (even with s-off). Meaning you can't do things like flash custom recovery with bootloader locked (even with s-off).

Hello there. Thanks for the reply. What I meant was, the boot animations are slow every time I reboot the device.
Things I have already done:
1. Flashed the rom.zip again.
2. Factory reset.
3. Wiped the cache from recovery multiple times.
4. Restarted in all possible ways. Normal restart. Power off, wait 10 minutes and power on again. Pressed the power and volume up button for restarting. Reboot via fastboot.
I'd really appreciate if you could help me out.

Since you've already flashed the RUU again, I don't think there is much else you can do. Maybe its a common issue with the new build?

That only applies to flashing ROMs in custom recovery. WHich is completely different from RUU. RUU re-writes all partitions, including firmware, kernel, ROM, and a bunch of others. So there isn't a possibility of a mismatch; as long as the RUU ran properly. And since you ran the RUU twice, you pretty much eliminated the possibility it didn't install completely.
Some other options you may consider:
1) Unlock the bootloader, flash TWRP custom recovery, flash a different ROM and see if the slow boot issue persists.
2) Change CID and/or MID (which you are free to do since you are s-off) and try another RUU; such as Developer's Edition or Euro.

Which version do you want to "convert" to?
Dev Ed is easy, it shares the same model ID (MID) as AT&T, and you already have SuperCID. So all you would need to do is run the MM Dev Ed RUU: http://dl3.htc.com/application/RUU_M8_UL_M60_SENSE70_MR_BrightstarUS_WWE_6.12.1540.4.exe
Euro is a bit more steps, you would need to change to the Euro MID: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2708581
Then run Euro MM RUU, noting that relocking bootloader is not needed for you (since you have s-off): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64926626&postcount=6

Depends. If his handset is s-on he can't "just" run the old ruu. With s-on you can't downgrade the bootloader to a lower version.
So it's either doable with s-off or look for the OS via a backup and try to restore that and run it on the new firmware.

So in the meantime i reflashed twrp and recovery and restored a backup.
But in the conclusion all i want now is to revert to full stock (i have no backup of that). Can i do that with s-off and bootloader re-locked? the reason that i want to do that is to recieve further updates ota. The reason i did all this to my phone was because the 4g was working when it wanted (not only 4g but mobile data in general). Now i'm thinking of reversing to stock, maybe future updates will solve this or to send the phone back for waranty.
So i need to flash stock, can you guide me from this point to achieve that?
My current software is 1.95.401.3, the phone was unlocked but not developer edition.Cid is HTC__34.
Help me what to do next and i will do one by one until i succeed (sry for my bad english)
@pocutzz you need SuperCID. In download mode, connect phone to pc and open a command window on your computer, type out "fastboot oem writecid 11111111" (I advice you copy and paste this but without the quotation marks), and then you will gain SuperCID. With this, you will be able to install any firmware/RUU regardless of CID.
@ OP, if you want to downgrade, since you are S-OFF there is no need to relock bootloader. As long as your have SuperCID you can downgrade to any firmware just like that. Download RUU and run it.

if you RUU you should still be able to receive OTA afterwards but don't count on me for that one as I've never restored back to stock before. You can search for previous HTC 10 RUUs on google, I recommend not going too far back and just going on the update before the 1.95 one (1.90 I think). Not every version has an RUU so if you can't find an RUU you want, try and find an older version.

i have done superCID, but before i try to flas the ruu, wanted to ask you, after that what remains? like s-off,root,twrp,custom recovery?
Okey so i did the superCID, in download mode it shows me the 1111111 but on the phone when i run CID Getter still says HTC__034 (that is how it suppose to show?), i copied from here like you said.Downloaded the ruu.exe from htc website, and when it runs it resets my phone to download mode, the bar goes instantly to 100% and the ruu installer says the 155 error, incorect version i think.
What do i do next?
Maybe MID problem?i've read something about it for HTC M8 i have mid 2PS620000. Maybe the ruu.exe on htc website is for US and i need EU?
Later edit: So i put the global variant with .401. in the sd card and it started to flash, i will se what is what...

S-OFF will never be wiped, if you have relocked then it will remain relocked state. Everything else is wiped and restored to stock including recovery, system, data, Internal Storage MIGHT BE WIPED I am not so sure.
if it shows SuperCID in download mode it should be fine. All you needed to do to get it was to execute that command line I posted before.
