Last year, when the "official" 2.3 Sense ROM came out, I waited until it was rootable and then installed it (yeah, love to be on the save side).
Among several issues there was a really annoying browser bug which FC at random times, especially when navigation quite fast between several pages (for example browsing forward and back on mobile optimized sites like the forum section of "heise-online.mobi"), I think it happens after pressing the back button.
I didn't like Sense, so I switched to Oxygen and later to CM7.
In CM7.1 I often had Browser issues again, but it did not FC but just stopped responding. Searching through the internet I found other ppl with the same issue... but no solution.
Now I'm using euroskank's CM7.2RC1 Build which is really great - but guess what: Browser crashes at random times when quickly navigation.
I checked the logs for stack traces and those crashes occur always in libwebcore.
So is there something broken in 2.3's webcore implementation?
I have used cm7.1 for quite a long time using ManU 2.0 SVS kernel. Try flashing that ROM and kernel combination, coz its the most stable combo i have found. No freezes, reboots or FCs. Press Thanks if my advice works
Can't say I noticed that on rooted stock roms, but haven't really used stock browser at all.

I'm now on CM7.2RC1 which includes several webkit fixes, but browser is still crashing.
This often happens when quickly navigating between web pages (i.e. go quickly forward/backward in threads).
*sigh* maybe I'll try a full wipe and check if this still happens.... however wiping dalvik cache and clearing data of "Browser" and "HTML-Anzeige" (HTML-View?) should reset all to default - in theory...

Me too. Plus the fact that the internet cache is saved on the internal memory blows. Yeah I can link it to the sd-ext with a couple of commands but why bother when there are better 3rd party browser that does it for you and performs better.
Well, some 3rd party browsers like dolphin suffer from the same issue because they use the same webkit libs.
Had those hangs of CM7.1 in dolphin, too.
Also, I don't like firefox or opera, so there isn't much choice left...
I've been using Dolphin and I never encounter crashes with CM7 nightlies and this v7.2rc1. I'm using the mini version although I assume they use the same engine.
Maybe I should really do a clean wipe/reinstall.
I was carrying old data over from 7.1 (where I had hangs, not crashes, but some ppl reported them too in the cm forums - so I was not alone).
If it still happens, I'll create a bug report in the cm issue tracker.
I know how to collect logcat and stacktraces (tombstones), maybe this helps identifying this problem.
Edit: Done. Also happens with a clean full wipe installation - opened CM issue 4867
Hi,
First of all, I appreciate that you're taking some time to read my topic
I've got a problem with my One V for a long time now. Overall, the performance of my phone is great. But when using certain apps, for example, a browser (doesn't matter which one, I tried stock browser, Chrome, Opera, Firefox, Dolphin, enz) my phone gets laggy and then completely locks up until I can't even get the screen back on and I have to hard reset it. The problem is most pronounced with browsers but I know that apps like Facebook can trigger the problem too.
I already addressed this problem earlier in the threads of ROMs I was using, but because I think most of you don't have a good idea of what I mean so I made a video to demonstrate the problem.
I have this problem with most custom ROM's. Lloir's and Maxwen's CM10 had this problem and Shpongle (which I'm currently using) has it. I used AOKP for some time back and I'm pretty sure that AOKP didn't have the problem, but unfortunately that ROM had other problems (sound not working, and that's a pretty big deal you know)
I never used stock ROM so I don't know if it's present there as well.
I feel like I'm the only victim of this issue and I've tried everything to get it solved. It's just very annoying because can't use my phone without having to reset it 1-3x per day. I'm at the point that I have no idea what could be causing it and I don't know how to solve it.
I already tried using Turbo Boost, but that didn't solve it. It is very probably not a memory issue; my RAM is not full when the problem shows up.
I'm thinking about trying to revert to stock... Maybe the issue is not present in stock ROM. But I hope you guys can help me in some way... Maybe there are other users with the same problem?
Try downloading greenify. I have this problem, and just set Facebook and other draining apps to hibernate when my screen shuts off....problem solved.

Very strange... maybe your phone's motherboard is broken, so when WiFi transmitter gains signal and send it forward, there's some point in that way that causing problems... I'm talking about WiFi cause you haven't said what are you using: 3G/4G or WiFi... or maybe your router is causing those problems...
And you haven't got back to stock completely... I propose U to flash myONEv 9.5 or Ignorance v3 (best performance and the smoothest I think) and check if that problem repeats... addintionally you can compare CM10/AOKP with custom-Sense ROMs for me custom-Sense ROMs are better than CM10/AOKP

It's not like it is "draining apps". The problem only appears when the screen is on and I use the apps actively. If the phone is so slow that I can't get the screen back on, most of the time it 'recovers' again when I wait for 30-60 minutes with screen off. Off course I don't have the time for that so I hard-reset it.
So I don't think Greenify will do anything in my case.

It doesn't matter whether I'm using WiFi, 2G (GPRS/EDGE), 3G (UMTS) or HSDPA.
Second, it doesn't look like the problem happens with internet access in general. It more happens with certain apps. For example, I can stream video's from Dropbox perfectly. In that case I both have heavy CPU/GPU usage (because of the video decoding/playback) and heavy internet traffic (because I stream from Dropbox), but I have no problems.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna try that. Thanks for your help!
Today I installed myONEv RC9.5 FX+ and it is quite a bit smoother, but that goes for every fresh ROM install
I have to test for a few more days to give an answer about whether the problem is fixed or not. The problem seems to be a lot less pronounced with fresh ROM installs and I need to use it some time to be sure.
However, so far I don't think I really like Sense ROMs I've come across several things that I like better in Shpongle or CM10. For example, in most of those ROMs you get in settings an extra options menu with performance settings (overclocking, kernel settings, I/O scheduler, compcache), auto-brightness levels tweaks, auto-rotate tweaks, softkeys settings, statusbar tweaks and such. Does anyone know good compact app that features all this?
Oh, and it's only Android ICS 4.0.1 I was used to JB 4.2.2

All those things: NO... For OC and schedulers U can use NoFrills CPU Control or SetCPU or anything you will find... for statusbar tweaks, Ignorance ROM have additional flashable zip that offers centered clock + normal/% battery and right-side clock + normal/% battery... for RAM tweaks, you can flash ksm.zip from myONEv 9.5 thread or Triple Swap from here... as I remember Nova Launcher have softkeys settings

The browser lag is not just you. I have tried every single browser offered on google play and they all become slow and unresponsive. The only browser I use is stock 4.1.2 browser. Anything else is garbage. Including Opera Mini (not because of lag but because of its bugs in reloading pages when submitting passwords, text in boxes in general..over all its a piece of sh*t) and so are the other "mini" styled browsers. Seems the browser developers have forgotten that they are developing browsers for PHONES..NOT COMPUTERS!! Hell many of the browsers bloat up after install to sizes larger than many desktop browsers..what a joke. I down rate them all on the market.

The fastest and cheapest (low mobile data usage ) browser is Opera Mini... and I haven't seen any bugs in it :good:
i beg to differ. opera mini has several bugs that go back as far as opera mini 4. inputting text in text fields like password, username and general reply/post boxes results in a page reload that requires user to start all over again...and sometimes this reload loops infinitely. the bug starts with operas flawed data compression system in which they crunch and preload pages on their servers before ypu actually get the content. its because the compression via srrver versus direct to device mucks up the transmission of the types of data mentioned. and i wont even start on the "new" opera mobile...what a joke that has become. no opera mini is not bug free by any means. and even after many users submit bug reports about the reload/lost data bug...opera does nothing...either because they cant fix it or dont think its there. well it is and has been for years..

Opera Mobile Classic is the only decent browser IMO, it's the only one that loads pages faster than any other browser for me.And the UI isn't that ****ty new one, it's the one from the old symbian days, the look that actually worked.

I have the same problem
But Opera mini next is so good to me.
Ultra FAST and stable
Opera mini next 7.5... Not old Opera mini
But the problem is not memory, it's because message cpu usage of these browsers
For Example Google Chrome run on 100% of cpu and Opera mini runs on 50% average with 10 open tabs!

I have this really weird lag when I'm on ANY 4.4 based ROM no matter what kernel or gapps package I use. So I install the ROM and its all great but I start travelling and after sometime the notification drawer is all laggy and stuttering like never before. I thought it could be a GPS issue and tried disabling wifi, gps and mobile data but no luck, I also tried clearing app cache, doing a clean wipe and reinstalling ROM, trying almost every 4.4 based ROM out there. All I did was do a Clean install (factory reset, wipe dalvik, cache, system) from TWRP 2.6.3.2, configure the accounts, install superSU from playstore and update binaries, install TiBackup and restore user apps with data. It was still smooth until I leave work/home/travel somewhere. Anyone else facing this issue? Other than this weird lag, the UI is buttery smooth (no lags on homescreen, app drawer, opening and closing apps, etc) and even the RAM usage is quite low (<300MB). I cant seem to figure out what could be causing this. Please help me.
PS: the notification drawer lags ONLY when there are no notifications or when there is a permanent notification. When I get a dismissable notification it doesnt resemble any lag at all!
Thanks.

I'm also on a recent nightly, and although I don't *feel* any disturbing stutter in notification drawer, it isn't quite as smooth as what's on my Nex4. Now, as the OP has hinted, I tried getting a dismissable notification in the drawer and boom, the drawer is suddenly as smooth as hell - but only for seconds. Wondering why...

I do a clean flash as I stated previously. Factory Reset, Wipe dalvik cache, system, cache, Flash ROM, Gapps (dhacker29's latest), and reboot. Since I use TiBackup to restore, I also download SuperSU from playstore just to update binaries and make TiB work, I uninstall superSU after that and use the built-in superuser app.

I know right? Once I disabled Wifi optimization as it was on, and it got smooth again, but that wasn't the end. I went to work and pulled out my phone, and boom, its all laggy and stuttering again. A few hours back I gave KitKat another shot but this time it was laggy even after the clean install without any apps restored. This is the weirdest thing to ever happen to my GNex. Now I'm back on AOKP 4.3.1 M1 with Tiny Kernel 5.4 with the smoothest android experience ever. Let's wait for the developers to take a look into this issue. :fingers-crossed:
Okay I think I found a solution. I tried 5 use-cases:
Flash method: Clean - Factory reset, wipe dalvik cache & cache, wipe ROM, flash ROM, gapps
1. CM11 ROM with built-in kernel
2. CM11 ROM with Tiny 5.4 kernel
3. CM11 ROM with built-in kernel
4. CM10.2.0 (stable) ROM with built-in kernel
5. CM10.2.0 (stable) ROM with Tiny 5.4 kernel
I noted that when I did not flash a 3rd party kernel the issue seemed to persist even at first start-up. But when I flashed a 3rd party kernel (be it any compatible kernel) there was absolutely no lag at all. But then the question of why I tested it on CM10.2 ROM is because I found the same notification drawer lag on CM10.2 (official) ROM. Maybe this started after the ram-disk was changed? (I'll leave that for the developers to decide).
Note: I'm currently on Gummy 21-12-13 build with Tiny 5.4 kernel, ART enabled. When I started off to work today I wanted to switch to 3G and when I did so the lag was back, but after it found a signal tower it disappeared. I have found no lag so far.
Something off-topic : But commonly throughout these tests, I found that these ROM's exhibited terrible lag when using live wallpaper.
If someone (facing the same issue as stated in the OP) can confirm that the above solution works, it will help alleviate the problem.
Edit: Also found in tricksterMOD that the deep-sleep mode was in the 'unused states' category.

Okay I guess the problem hasn't been quite solved yet, bumping so people can have a look at this.

In the recent builds notification drawer lags only when I'm not on Wifi no matter what KK ROM+Kernel combo I try.

I just wanted to confirm if it was really a bug or something that was specific to my phone. That confirmed the former, thanks!
Just wanted to add my thoughts on this. Are you guys using the Google Experience launcher with the "Ok Google" Hotword Detection? If so, turn off the hotword detection in settings. After doing that, I get no lag whatsoever in my notification drawer. I didnt use that feature that much anyway.
Still no dice on this issue? Not intentionally bumping, but I think this issue might have a deeper cause that requires more attention from devs.
I've read through the "suggestions" above and I can say that nothing works. What I have is a VERY clean CM11 + Franco r395 - no Gapps, no Google Experience Launcher, no Google Now (Google Search is force stopped and its shortcut removed), very few installed apps, no background apps except for input method, lots of free RAM (~520MB), yet this still happens. Only thing that removes the lag temporarily is an incoming notification, which only makes it smooth for seconds.
Sent from Google Nexus 4 @ CM11
Okay, tried many JB ROMs and they all don't have the lag. Try one of the KK ROMs and they come back immediately. Something with KK source?

One more update: flashed latest CyanogenMod nightly (CM11 20140325) and I surprisingly discovered that the notif lag is gone. Turns out I'm wrong, as the lag is gone only in lockscreen and Trebuchet. However, on second thought, does this phenomenon mean that CM/Trebuchet recently implemented something that potentially removes the lag? What patch is it exactly, and why isn't it applied on other apps?
I still think that this "simple and bearable" problem has a darker side that requires more attention.

I installed this AORP ROM and it's working fine. You may have troubles with using browser, because it's pretty lagy and internet works very slow and often app browser chrashes. But if you use Chrome instead browser everything works fine and fast. When you reboot phone, you must wait some time, it reboots slowly. Other apps that I have tried are working ok.
I'm not gonna say that this ROM is definetivly stable, it's in beta stage, but for me was until now pretty ok.

what i meant was in kitkat, besides eliminating total flash support, google also removed the outdated webkit browsing engine and replaced it with the newer chromium engine. However, this causes performance issues with most browsers except google chrome, obviously. Basically, the aosp browser and others that we loved has been rendered unusable in kitkat. The lag is not caused by having both browsers, it happens because the changes google make to the OS itself.

Sorry, didn't right understand you before. It seems to be so. Before kitkat was no problem with browser.
All of the current releases are base of mikes LegacyXperia nightlies and the only one that is based on the latest release is Halley by HeadFox. ALL of the others are using earlier releases!!!
I'm personally using the latest nightlie from mike, which is from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2545354
He's not advertising the releases or updating the thread because he got royally p****d off with people abusing the XDA rules and using a development thread for stupid questions rather than just reading the OP....
Anyway, I've found the releases from him to be the most stable and battery friendly of all the 4.4 releases so far. For the browser issue I just use Opera mini (which I've used for a long time anyway) , there are no random reboots so far, I can get a 12hr shift from one charge, and that is with me sending @10 sms and 3 or so hours on the internet.
I came from SJB8 and I can say that I will not be returning to it!! If the 4.4 I'm using is a beta then a full stable release will be able to make me a coffee when I wake up in the morning too!!!! It's so far advanced from beta in my eyes that I see it as a stable release.....
However, do a backup of your current install and give 4.4 a spin. The only real way to find out if it suits you is for you to try it

i try omni rom beta #1.. smooth but i cant capture video..and known bug is glicher on some screen..may be you will try it
I've also tried cm-11.0-20131225-NIGHTLY-LegacyXperia-anzu ROM and it's working fine for me in 2 days. Problem I have found until yet was with browser, the same as in AORP. Now I have tried with Opera Mini browser and it's working without troubles. Until now was this ROM ok and stable for me.
I tried the Comet Halley 4.4.2 rom like 4 or 5 days ago, but it was generally laggy, so I switched to the AORP.
Better performance, much less laggy (but it's still laggy sometimes), also the google search is kinda bugged and, sometimes, when you are scrolling through search results, will block the entire phone for 0.5 - 1 second every now and then.
Reboot works fine (really FAST), reboot into recovery probably doesn't work (blocks the phone, so I always end up removing the battery).
Everything until now was tested with smartassv2, sio, 240-1400 Mhz

Hello nexus 7 users!
I've been using Lollipop roms for quite some time now and I'm having some issues with pretty much every browser I use.
Now I'd like to do a poll to see how many people are having these problems.
Symptoms:
Chrome: scrolling around gives the ow, snap error most of the time.
Firefox: Firefox has crashes when scrolling around.
Stock browser: Browser has stopped when doing random things.
facebook integrated browser: closes and facebook relaunches.
I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one having these issues cause I've experienced them on a bunch of roms (DJL, simpleAOSP and even stock) and yes I've done full wipes every time.
I'm having issues with erratic browser scrolling while typing and autocorrect going haywire when typing in a busy disqus tread.
