I'm looking at a new smartphone in addition to picking the this tablet. Does anyone know if there is an advantage to having a Samsung phone or would any cross compatibly be the same regardless of manufacturer? This would be my first smartphone and tablet purchases so I hope I'm not asking a dumb question...

Some of the apps used on the Note 10.1 are proprietary to Samsung so you would need a Note 1,2,3 to use them on a phone. I run a custom ROM and have none of those apps on my N1 so I can't really say what the advantage would be to being able to use them on both devices other than familiarity.

NP, I've never owned a tablet so I can't speak for that but I bought the Galaxy Note 1 on the day it was released and have been very satisfied.
If you end up going with these 2 I would think you will be as well. Also note that if you end up rooting the Note 3 you can use it as a wifi hotspot for your tablet so if you're looking to save some money you can just get the wifi version and not the LTE or 3g version.

Well if you get Samsung Galaxy phone you get function like S-beam which uses NFC to initiate connection then transfers files via WiFi direct much faster then doing Dropbox upload then download.
Also with Galaxy phone's you get S-Memo which sync's with all the Galaxy devices same like Evernote but with Note devices you get to draw or hand write memo.

Hmmm..... weird!
NFC is such common thing that I never actively looked for it in the articles, I thought it was given as how every Samsung high end devices from S3 forward got it.
Not having it on tablet would turn one of the best function of touchWiz the S-Beam totally redundant!
Some sites are saying yes and some saying no. Maybe the final product will have it?
The tablet is not out yet for reviews, so we shall see how it pans out.
I'm still on the fence between Sony Xperia Z tablet or Note 10.1, as I'm still waiting for the price of 4G model.

Probably never.
I bet by the end of this week. Root will be easy, bootloader will not be broken though. I just want my Titanium Backup and Root Explorer so root is all need.
I called a few att stores in my area and each of them said they have them in stock, but cannot sell them... How'd you pull this off?

I just walked in and asked? Ha. And would we not be able to flash custom ROMS? I need my CM11!
You'll never have CM11 on it. Never. But you can use exposed and do other mods. Just no ROMS.
Wow. I guess a lot of things have changed since my old S3.

I was surprised when it happened because samsung phones were always so open. Nexus 6 looks good but it's just a big phone with no feature that I know of at least to take advantage if that screen. At least they finally went above 32gb now. But I don't think I'll ever buy an AT&T phone ever again.
I did the same. Walked into an AT&T near me during lunch and got a white Note 4. I wasn't expecting to be able to get one but they are selling them here in Milwaukee.
Much like some of you here, I don't need anything more than root to run titanium and a couple other things. I never understood the idea of getting a note device to throw an AOSP rom on it that negates the S Pen functionality and other Note qualities. Why not just get any other big phone?

Why do you say that? Root and bootloader are two completely different things.
Root should be easy and we should get it. Custom recovery on the other hand, probably not.
I'm in Pa and just called my local store, they have them in as well and the guy said I can come get one now. I'M on my way to pick up note 4 also. I'm with u guys just want root for titanium backup and xposed , I really don't flash roms to often anymore.

Correct me if I'm wrong but these custom ROMS don't support the S Pen. If that is true, what use is the ROMS if you can't use the S Pen. That is one major point of the whole note.

The S Pen was never a real selling point for me. HTCs have bad cameras, LGs have have horrible reliability from mine/my buddies experience with the G2 and the Note is still the spec king. I could definitely get behind a Nexus though.

Which store did you go to? I tried at the Greenfield store on 76th and Layton but they said they will start selling it on the 17th.
I don't mind touchwiz myself and if you haven't played with a note 4 in store you might be pretty happy with touchwiz this time around, its snappy and actually doesn't look nearly as bad as it used to. Can just install nova or google now launcher if it is that bothersome though from a UI perspective. Setting wise I think Samsung offers more a better features than aosp.

I got the Note 4 in Pasadena, they had 5 white and 2 black. They are technically not suppose to sell them until Friday, but all the corp stores got them. It took a bit of effort to get them to admit they had them, and I pulled the corporate partner card on them so they went ahead with it.
Now what sucks is I can't transfer any of my data with titanium backup, I am wondering when root will be available.
I also agree with others here, if you don't need or care for the S-Pen the Nexus 6 is probably the device you want...
So who will be first to release a root?
Hopefully we can get root for now... Maybe we should check out the G3 forum as they got root with the bootloader locked...

Hello all! I've just purchased a s6 edge plus from T-Mobile. I've been with Apple for the past few years and I wanted something refreshing. So I want to know is there a root for the phone with me just having an ota upgrade(5.1.1) ?? Will it trip the Knox counter and what features do or don't work when you root it? Again I'm just looking for a quick rundown for rooting as I have been out of the Android game for a couple years. Ok thanks for your help

Yes there is root, and you will trip knox if you decide to root, however tripping knox
has nothing to do with the phones performance, speed or compatiblity.
Also tmobile will not check to see if knox has been tripped in case you need to
return the phone for exchange or warranty.
If anything rooting will enhance the features and there will be more applications, utilities
and other stuff which only work if the phone is rooted.
You will not loose any existing features or options by rooting the phone.
If you done an OTA update to 5.1.1 that's great, the rooting method for these
new phones work just fine whether the phone has the original firmware or
the updated 5.1.1 firmware installed.
Good luck,
Have a great day!
I haven't rooted my S6 Edge+ because I like Samsung Pay too much.
Once knox is tripped, Samsung Pay won't work

Samsung Pay is nothing like apple pay or even android pay, it works everywhere and very reliably. The only drawback is that only a few financial companies are on board at this time. However, I do not carry a wallet at all anymore which is a great plus in my life. Now if only my car would not require a key I would be totally free to only have to remember my phone when going anywhere.

Don't have any problems at most gas stations, but some just don't have a strong enough magnetic reader to allow phone to penetrate. In these cases, I have to go inside the store and prepay for gas, small inconvenience.
Can i please get some advice? (sorry a bit long but thought i need to provide the background info).
I have been given a Samsung Note 7 as a compensation-related gift by my network operator Vodafone and to cut a very long story short i have almost exhausted all possibilities with Vodafone and Samsung to get it exchanged for a different model or a credit.
I am currently looking at the possibilities of keeping my Note 7 if i feel i can assess (and possibly repair) it privately to confirm the safety implications and any other issues that may come up.
My questions are as follows:
1. Has anyone had success changing the Imei and model number? The reason is to protect myself from network barring and to retain app support. I have a previous Note and can use the imei. My plan was to change the model to G935F that of an S7 Edge. (There are some sites i came across but I wasn’t sure the guides were tested)
2. Can i root it and will i be able to update it regularly from core android?
3. Will the Wifi-calling feature work? Sounds like a small thing but its quite important. I have this feature on my Note 7 already and activated on my account and its very useful to me.
I live in the UK and I am an Engineer by trade. I worked for a cellular phone repair centre a number of years ago that specialised with Samsung and Nokia phones.
Whilst i have some experience and contacts in the industry, my knowledge of the current software/ firmware platforms on the market is limited so i would greatly appreciate any advice you can give.
Thanks in advance
not too sure about how you would transplant the hardcoded iemi number mate... are uk note 7s actually confirmed being banned?
You can root it and from that you can add features from the xposed library that will surely extend the life of your note 7 for years.. by which time the note 8 should be out in some form.
I read on maybe this site, or another, that someone had their Note 7 thinking it was the S7 yet still fully functioning as a Note 7 (Grace UI, etc)

Thanks for info. I'm not sure if they will fully inforce a ban but the procedure for returning the n7's is pretty much the same, minus the fire proof boxes (read into that what you like). I want to see what needs to be put in place if they do.
Any idiots guide for rooting and where to download files would be appreciated.

I'm trying to stoke up some support in the uk to appeal to Samsung to at least reassess the n7's already out there but there's only a few interested. I believe there is more support in the US which may provide a much stronger case.

The official release date in the UK for the Note 7 was next week, October 28th, which ironically was the same date as the Note 2 release, Note Edge release and Galaxy View release, just different years.
Call me crazy, I recognize a pattern here.
I am a serious Note user, so instead of following the crowd I will either consider the LARGE 18.4" Galaxy View or the 6" Curved Screen Huawei Mate 9. Hmmm, Mate, Note?
For some strange reason there aren't many Samsung Stylus Devices available, can't find the Note Pro 12.2 on sale anywhere. Something is definitely up. All I know is I feel sorry for those Pixel, iPhone 7, V20 blinded sheeple.

The recall is voluntary. Do not believe those people who say your IMEI will be blocked or barred. It will only be blocked if the phone was purchased in a payment plan and You fail to return it. Or if You fail to keep the payments. The recall is absolutely VOLUNTARY. Do not be afraid. Many of us are keeping the phone, because we know the risk is now minimal.
All electronics have the possibility to fail. All batteries have the risk of catching fires. This risk is a lot greater when the device begins their lifecycle. So now the risk is minimal. Samsung did not take "probability" into consideration before sending those replacement phones. Meaning if you had 50 in 2 million to catch fire with the original. Now you had 50+30* of catching fire in the replacement. (*More o Less)
Samsung has a great opportunity to collect data and usage information with us. Otherwise if people panic they will just scrap the Note Series all together.
Good Luck! ?

In short: No you can't change your IMEI, but that is not needed. If you don't want Samsung to directly know that your device is a Note 7, you need to change your device name in build.prop (but to do this you need root) and to deactivate software updates.
But I recommend you to not use the device. Samsung may not release any software updates, and the risk of exploding is still there. Even if the risk is very small, it can happen at any time, and the more time you spend with this device, the bigger is the risk.

Thanks for your reply SaschaHa. I am just weighing up my options while waiting for a reply from Samsung hq. If i was use it I would be after I had assessed it internally.
Although Samsung wont provide updates will I be able to semi - regularly update it manually from stock? Eg nougat 7 was originally in the pipeline for the n7.
Also would wifi - calling get carried over/ integrated in the build?

You only can update it manually if some rom developers port firmwares from other Samsung devices to the Note 7 (if Samsung doesn't release updates). But that mostly is only possible for the same Android version, so there might never be a Nougat rom for Note 7. So then the only possibility to get a newer Android version is to use a AOSP / CM(14) based rom, if a developer created one for the Note 7. But without proper drivers by Samsung, that's difficult. And I think, the most developers are going to use other devices instead of risking a burning N7.

I'm staying factory. I did not disable the 80% battery option because we ran a study and found overcharging to be 1 of 3 factors in starting fires. If Samsung sends the Nougat update, then I will just update. The customs ROMs I'm not a big fan of, because it seem one always looses some cool feature like heart monitor, Samsung Pay or scanner. Do you mean 60% battery limitation update? Fyi I spoke with a samsung rep today that had called into one of the stores, he believes there is a kill type update coming to force customers hands. I have the 1st addition (non batt update) so if I was to keep it I would have to root. As mentioned wifi calling is also an issue. Samsungs got a lot to answer for ditching such a great device and one that can be repaired

Unless they have a Sprint Note 7 60% otherwise you can bump up to 80% charge. I recommend you get advise from an Engineer rather than a Sales Rep
I no longer have the pictures but click:

Please refer to the Voluntary recall at: http://www.samsung.com/us/note7recall/
As of today the recall is only mandatory in Germany. Note 7 is banned on all flights in the US and part of Mexico. The mandatory recall will take time as the Consumer Product Safety Commission has to run a full investigation on the matter

I bought my Exynos S20 specifically because I was planning to root it, and I have never owned an Android phone that was rootable without rooting it. I think this may be my first. Software is great, features are great, and I don't want to break Samsung Pay because MST is ridiculously useful.
I have the S20+ 5G D/S and like many others I've rooted every Samsung phone I've ever owned. But until a custom recovery comes along and a decent Rom and Kernel. I'll stay non rooted. Its not to bad if I'm honest.

in the UK we don't have MST with Samsung pay, so there's not much incentive to use it over Google pay, which I find more transparent in daily use.
Yeah I would have never used phone pay apps if it weren't for MST honestly, so few places here have even google or apple pay, it's basically pointless to take the time to look and see if you should pull your phone or credit card out, it was much faster and simpler to just pull your credit card out and assume no one had the NFC paystations.
here in the UK, since I started using Google pay a few years ago, I've literally never not been able to use it.
Google is a one-stop shop that liked to store everything we own... password and financial information as well... one good hack will have access to all of that data... which is why as a rule of thumb, i dont like saving my passwords that allow access to say, my bank.. its in my head.. thats it.. not stored anywhere... and google pay and the such was disabled when I rooted my s8... and going to the s20+ soon, these pay features do not interest me because I and many others here know how easy it is to hack and get into those apps. I will not use them for this reason... too much information stored in any 1 location is just asking for trouble... and what happens when someone clones your phone and starts using your pay app?
But I dont wanna get too far off subject... right now, you can only root an Exynox and it blows their security fuse in the process... better than their old knox I guess for Samsung, but sucks for those who will never try to open their phone... maybe someone will find a work around for it.... But we can upload new roms on a SnapDragon I hear?!? Its the bloatware that is of major concern to me and if we can flash a new rom and get rid of it... thats something... I dont really see any ROMS out for either phone... my s8 is a Exynox SM950F...
So do I order an Exynox that I can unlock again, or is someone using this time stuck in your house to root the Snapdragon and start making roms?
