Hi guys got my upgrade early from Vodafone and ordered this phone on launch day.
I have to say I think it's a worthy upgrade for m7 users but less so for users of the m8,
I like the design of the m9 a lot better than the m8, I wasn't a huge fan of how rounded m8 was and preferred the flatter edges of the m7. The sound is amazing and an order of magnitude louder than my m7, the only complaint is that I miss the capacative buttons from the m7 and really don't get why HTC got rid of them when the back bar is still present.
Just wanted to share a few thoughts and despite all the negative reviews I really love this phone and think once we have kernel source and we get some software refinements and custom kernels this device will only get better.
Please share your thoughts if you have upgraded to m9 from m7 or ask questions if you are considering it.

I have the m7 and am still on the fence about the m9. The black bar no matter their reasons still just seems silly to me but I can overlook that. How are you liking the camera? I'd like to pick up a new phone before my vacation in the next few months and I'd love for the cell phone to be the main picture taker. The m7 was quite acceptable for the typical day shots. I love the m7 speakers and can't imagine them even louder! Considering what else is out there for all networks... Would you buy it again? What else did you have your eyes on?
I haven't used the camera much so far but pics I have taken with just auto settings are certainly acceptable if a bit noisy when zoomed in, the lack of optical image stablization is a little disappointing but in order to get the best shot I've used burst mode and just kept the best one , the camera is not the biggest feature for me so is not a real issue imo.
I was considering the s6 non edge variant I feel the edge is a bit gimmicky and am not a fan of touchwiz as much as HTC Sense, which has some real nice touches over previous iterations like themes, sense home etc although these are now available on m7, I was also considering waiting to see Sony's z4 but since I was offered the upgrade early I just went with my gut and ordered the m9.
I don't know if there was anything wrong with my m7 speakers but when I first got it I was extremely impressed with the audio, It seemed to reduce significantly after an ota though leaving me a little bewildered( and my daughter's one mini (m4) louder.
Believe me this thing is super loud and the Dolby surround is genuinely impressive, if you get it check out some of the Dolby videos on YouTube and you should hear what I mean, good luck choosing your new phone and let us know what u decide.
Yes I would definitely still buy this handset right now

Definitely a big improvement from the m7. Camera design smoothness screen is a massive jump but so much compared to m8. HTC really missed an opportunity here rather then launching 5" screen to compete against s6 s6 edge they should have gone for 6" screen to compete with 6 plus and note 4. More chance of success as they are older devices.
Nevertheless m9 is good solid phone but not in the same league as s6. Im a massive HTC fan but they keep making silly desicions . Getting back to point if you like m7 then you will be very impressed with HTC one m9.
Definitely, I think the upgrade from m7 is worth it that's why I posted this thread , just took some photos in fairly low light and the 4up upfront still seems the give better shots , I'm dunk though so I'll see in the moring

How's the battery so far? Do you have any problems with performance from the throttling?
battery life for me has been comparable to my M7 and has not been a problem as I plug in at every opportunity, there is defo thermal throttling going on but only in games and benchmarks really, tested mine outside in fairly cool temprature and got my best antutu and quadrant scores yet, Antutu 56000 ish and 33000 ish in quadrant however at room temp tests this drops to around Antutu 50000 - 53000 and quadrant 30000 - 31000 depending on ambient temp,
User experience is not affected but rarely play games on my device so cant really comment on that much.

How is the camera in terms of autofocusing moving subjects and look to the photos compared to the M7? The new camera update supports RAW which should be better in terms of picture quality. Also with the lack of optical image stabilization that the M7 had, is it more difficult to get those low light shots?
The camera has never really been a major consideration for me in choosing a smartphone, I do take photo's occasionally and found both the M7 and the M9 sufficient for my snapping needs, I have not really tested with moving targets but the lack of OIS is certainly a miss but I can live without it. I have not taken any RAW format pictures yet but I read in another thread that they are very good,
Low light photos seem fine for me so far but I have manually tweaked the settings a bit as I was initially unimpressed with the auto settings
capped ISO to 800, set to Medium resolution and lowered sharpness to -1 < seems to produce decent results.
Used my M7 running sense 7 till my M9 arrived today. Still love my M7, wife wants it but i dont know if i can part with it! IT is still a good upgrade for the M7 (which i have had for 2 years) and my god did EE take some convincing to give it to me for free!!!
First offer was £119.99 for the phone with 4gb data unlimited everything else for £52 a month. Half an hour after me seeing what other offers they have on it i said ill go vodaphone. Within seconds i was told i could have the phone free and 10gb data (unlimited texts / calls) for £41 a month.. Crazy but wel;l worth the stress i love it already

Almost exactly like me! I loved my M7, I would have held on a little longer if the missus wasn't forcing me to take an upgrade so she could have it! Currently awaiting it's return from warranty repair for the purple camera, they're replacing the module. Didn't annoy me as I'm not one for snapping indoors but thought I might as well get it fixed before giving it to her.
I'm on Vodafone and had even more trouble. The best they could offer me (a customer of 8 years) was £40pm with 4GB. I ended up getting a pre-order through mobilephonesdirect.co.uk, on the same Vodafone plan of unlimited calls, texts and 4GB data for £40 up front and £31.50pm! Bizarre how a 3rd party can sell you something the network can't come close to for a loyal customer
I was going to go with mobilephonesdirect but as our contracts are in my wifes maiden name we woulkd have needed to send our marriage certificate to EE to get it changed so i could go with MPD. Could not be bothered with that so went direct to EE.
I LOVE THIS PHONE!
Can anyone comment on the camera of the M9 particularly with the Raw update vs the M7 and the AF system too.

plus you can customize the onscreen ones (I use 4 buttons)

With on screen buttons it'll pretty much be the same as the m7 until you play games or watch videos where they disappear

Hi Guys
Im thinking of changing from G S5 to an M8 (S5 is Sooo boring to use, its just an S4 really), but I do like a good quality camera.. so Im just curious to ask ..
Is the camera as bad as the reviews say and have the HTC Updates improved it at all?
If you own an S5, how does the M8 compare?
Thanks
pretty silly reason to change a phone. S5 is as good as m8 so i suggest ,stick to it. Not really a upgrade and you will get bored of all phones , we all do.
and there are **** loads of comparison vidoes

I hate samsung and i bought m8 3days ago its the best phone i just love it pictures are awesome to specially in low light

Its not really a silly reason at this point no... when you consider that Ive only had the phone 3 days, The Touchwiz overhaul is not as major as they promised and the videos on YouTube, which Ive watched many of, all seem to come from the first 4 weeks after release, of which most, not all, are from over excited fanboys or bought reviewers, and dont take into account the updates that have been pushed by HTC to date and if these said updates have improved the camera at all and also how the audio sounds without Beats Audio..
The S5 Camera, like the S4 LTE on release day, does have some focusing and noise issues in low light, but the youtube videos dont tell you that..

Thanks for the input
But its mainly the camera, so If anyone can help me please.. Has the updates improved the camera
If your just going to use the pictures on your phone or for mms this phone is great (I previous owned a S4 and a Z1). There's also a mod on here you might want to check out?

There are entire threads about this topic, including one with dozens of pages of photos for you to look at, all tken with the M8. Whether the camera is good enough is completely subjective, so look at the photos it takes and see if they're good enough for you.
To the OP, I know exactly how it feels to currently be torn in middle between sticking with the S5 or M8.
Now as for my opinion, since I owned both phones, Im currently on and Sticking the M8.
I originally bought the M8 from TMobile new the day it came out. At first I was very impressed with the built quality and the smoothness of the UI on top of Android (Sense)
But after about 3 weeks of playing with it and taking lots and lots of pictures, I decided I wanted to give the S5 a try. So I ended up trading my M8 on Craigslist, even trade, for a Galaxy S5 in same new condition.
Now after playing with the S5 and using the camera to the fullest extent and my daughter Pre K graduation, I was very impressed with the Galaxy S5 camera. Like the Note 3 it had the same bells and wisles except with a higher pixel count and a couple more features added. But in comparison to the HTC One M8, the camera do seem to be "slightly" more sharper and more realistic looking.
BUT
With the big over haul in TouchWiz the phone seemed to lag here and there, and speaking of camera, during my daughters graduation Im taking lots of Pics and 1080p video, the phone started getting very wam and prompt a message that said "Phone Over Heating, Camera Disabled". So my camera was disable during the graduation so I missed a couple moments to take pics and record video. Phone cooled down and the camera was back working again......
Long story short, I ended up sale that Galaxy S5 for 450 and used that 450 to purchase my HTC One back from the guy I traded it to so now I have my original M8 back.
M8 is a overall better experience. After using the M8 yesterday at my sons 1st birthday party since he turned one year old, the pitcures tookedn with the M8 look pretty dam good.
Even got compliments while my camera was out by people looking at the view finder as we were taking pictures. Not to mention the UI being 100 percent smooth and I also found the battery to last a whole lot better on the M8 vs the S5.
So thats my 2 cents! Hit me up on twitter if you have any comments or questions. @FiberOpticsRLD
Honestly getting fed up with this bs now. The camera on both the m7 and the m8 is perfectly good and takes good clear pictures. If you want crap hot photos that you can blow up to the size of house, I say go and buy an expensive camera.
This 4 mega pixel comparison bollox is a load of crap. They are ULTRA pixels NOT megapixels. Just like hd and uhd.
After using both phones, I can deffinetly say that both the M7 and the M8 take excellent pic and video in low light conditions.
From what I understand with the pixel count being lower, this allows for more light to be picked up.
i'm switching to the M8 from the S5 as well. S5 is a fine phone but the occasional lag is enough to annoy me.

Yeah, after using the M7 -> Note 3 -> M8 - >S5 -> M8
I started to notice the high quality of HTC not only in the physicall hardware itself being the case of the phone and the screen and loud speakers, but I also started to see how the high quality of HTC Sense is vs TouchWiz. Even when compared to the skin on the LG G2 and other LG phones, the HTC Sense skin is just very light and optimized.
Deffinetly glad I was able to get my original purchased M8 back from Craigslist before it got traded off too far in the Craigslist world LOL.

They are bigger better pixels therefore more light and more detail captured per pixel .

The only reason to get the N5 over the G3 is if you absolutely have to have the fastest Android updates. Or the screen is too big. Or you only want to pay ~$300 for an off-contract phone.
Take it from someone who was in your exact shoes: yes. I had an HTC One XL, upgraded to a Dev Ed HTC One M7 when it came out and I loved it. I did. Screen was amazing. Phone felt great. And photos were pretty sweet (shameless plug: https://www.flickr.com/photos/lng0004/tags/htcone/). But then, when they announced the M8 which looked too similar with no big improvements to the camera, I decided to switch. My main interest was in a great camera sensor. So it was going to be either the Z2 or G3. G3 won me over with style.
After 6 days with the new G3, am I happy? Yup. It's still very much locked down. But after rooting, I was able to set up the phone to do (almost) all of what my HTC One was capable of. And the camera performs much better. Daytime photos actually look detailed and can be cropped without turning into one big mush. Oh, and the screen. Wow.
What I'm trying to say is, there's no reason not to upgrade.
PS: Get the G2 if you don't want to spend $600. Just as capable as the Nexus 5 with better camera and battery.
I used the M7 as my primary phone until I bought the G3 on Friday. I don't regret a thing. This phone is a beast.

I think your M7 is still amazing. The G3 is amazing too but some mind-boggling design elements detracts from the overall aesthetics of the phone. I mean, it has a sleek body with an amazing screen but marred by over-sharpening, poor UI colors, and badly designed icons. Come one! Cyan plus blue-gray in the UI? The over-sharpening of the display makes the fonts look weird and unbalanced (like a mixture of bold and thin weights). It also creates halos around texts. I would still prefer the HTC display quality.
I am not trying to defend the phone because everything you said is spot on and should have been fixed before its release. Definitely for us on the state side but if you are a flashaholic chances are after root and fingers crossed bootloader unlock for anyone not on tmobile stock problems wont bother you in the least. So I would say if you don't plan on being a power user with this phone skip on it until LG pulls it together.

You mentioned over-sharpening twice. That's because it's the only noticeable flaw of the phone. Everything else is subjective. I do agree that HTC's SLCDs are amazing though. Brighter than the G3. But everything that's good about the G3 makes it a great upgrade.
The main reason why I got the G3 over the M8 is because of the screen. It's practically the same physical size as the M8 but with a bigger screen.

Coming from m8 I would say no unless you can do without custom roms and live with pretty awful lag on the phone. I went for the screen size and resolution can you tell the difference ow yes.
Camera is better and like the thin bezel but again I say the lag is the biggest disappointing point of out the phone.

I don't experience any lag with my G3, and they are still working on unlocking the bootloader - I wouldn't count out the devs yet.
I had an M7 for 3 months and I traded it outright for a Galaxy S4. Aside from the unimpressive camera, the original HTC One had terrible cellular reception. This was confirmed by numerous people on the XDA forums and was likely due to the all-metal construction. Right away, I noticed a drastic improvement in my data speed and rarely experienced dropped calls, like I frequently had with the One. My new G3 actually has better reception than the GS4, so if you are considering an upgrade the LG phone's improved call and data quality should be cause enough.
Throw in a faster processor, MUCH better camera, replaceable battery and micro-SD card slot and it's a no-brainer.
It's really strange to me that phone reviewers never consider reception. They talk about the screen, processor speed, speakers, etc. but don't ever mention the phone's ability to send and receive calls.
Thanks everyone for the input, I actually went ahead and pulled the trigger...... I figured that I can give it a week trial to see if I like it.
So I went to Bestbuy and grabbed on..... Oddly I was still given the $50 in store gift card and the phone was only $50 + tax. That made my purchase even sweeter.
So far I really do like the screen size and the speed, it actually does seem faster then my HTC One (M7). The camera is extremely better and I actually liked my M7 camera. If all goes well this week I will give my son my M7 and keep the G3

I got overheatting issues with two S5s already. First one was worse. 165 degrees fahrenheit w/ 5-7 apps opened, some decent screen usage, and texting should not yield a high temp. One time, the overheating was caused by a T-Mobile diagnostic test and the screen wouldn't respond properly and the device crashed.
If you don't mind 4mp pictures the m8 camera is awesome. Low light pictures come out pretty good most of the time with little to no tweaking. Note3 took awesome well lit pictures. Low light sucked. Made the moto x seem like a professional camera in that regard and I do miss that from my x. S5 is probably the better all arounder picture taker but I got tired of touchwiz getting more and more complicated to tinker with. Knox didn't help either. I look forward to android L in lots of ways, including imaging, but OTOH I am worried about how hardcore google will implement selinux and security. As long as OEM's and google keep coming with phones that have unlockable bootloaders I'll be good.

Coolest running phone I have ever used, even when running GPS or a graphical game the phone only barely gets warm. Very efficient phone, not much battery energy is wasted.
After furthering thinking, I will stick with my Galaxy S5 and find ways to minimize the heat since one of my best friends and my dad have problems with their heating at times on Galaxies. I also want the waterproofing, nicer display, finger print scanner, and galaxy software to work w/ my gear.

Dear all,
time has come (and I got a great deal from my provider) to leave my beloved ONE M7 and upgrade to new phone.
My obvious two choices (both at the same price) are HTC One M9 and the Sammy S6.
I have never owned (apprt from my first free smartphone 8 years ago a crappy Sammy) anything but HTC and I must say that all in all I am quite happy with the company.
That been said I am in big dilemma this year which one to choose.
I was hopping to help with my decision giving me some feedback from your experience with M9 (especially after the camera software update).
Warm Regards
Both will be a great upgrade from the M7, although that in itself was also a lovely device.
That is a hard decision. I chose the HTC m9 because I'm on at&t and the Samsung will probably never get root. If the s6 was rootable (which it should be for you) I would have bought it no question. The camera on the s6 is the undisputed champion of cameras on smartphones. The camera on the HTC is fine but not great. The new design of the s6 is more exciting this year, while the HTC is about the same as last year. From what I've heard, the s6 is very speedy and fluid but so is the HTC. Decisions decisions.
Ive had the s6 for 2 weeks. Beleive me get the htc. Theres some rubbish things about it
I have been scathing of the M9, but the more I use it, the more I appreciate it.
Simple things like being able to get straight out of the dialer after a call to the desktop without a long lag, the ability to get vibrate or silent mode like Kitkat simply by turning down the volume, SD card storage (128gb S6 will be a unicorn I think or silly money), a perfectly good camera which performs equally as good as my Note 4 did, very fast operation, and equal battery life to the S6 are just a few reasons I went for the M9.
The lag on the S6 will be minor but apparent on the S6 after a little while of use, and a decent camera is no substitute for a lack of storage, fragile body, and huge protruding camera modules.
upgraded from the M7 myself didnt need to really as its still a great device, im loving the M9 just really waiting for original development to kick off properly, flar2 already working on his EX kernel which i know will eventually be awesome, development on HTC's is pretty much 2nd to none so is always a major plus for me, anyway I couldnt be happier with my choice to go with the m9, the camera nis very decent once you tweak the settings a bit and im sure this device will only get better with time and more mature software, its a hard decision granted and i doubt you will have regrets regardless what you choose. just my 2 pennies
Thanks a lot everyone you have been a great help.My mind is made up so it's M9 all the way! I have to wait a couple of days to get my hands on it but I am sure it will be worth the wait. Just one more question coming from the M7 was it easy to transfer contacts photos and music to M9?

I use HTC backup via dropbox for my settings, manually backup my music and photo's to my PC and all my contacts are stored on google so was completely painless, once complete was all setup in samreway as my M7 apart from a few minor settings,
Also there is a feature that pairs your devices via NFC and can transfer everything to your new phone via bluetooth but I didnt try that.

I just upgraded from a DNA to M9. I transferred almost 6 GB of music wirelessly from phone to phone very quickly. On the M9, go to Settings, scroll down to the Personal section, and tap on Get Content From Another Phone. It'll walk you through it. This for me was the easiest and fastest way.

Good choice. Other than the camera the s6 isnt as good as its hyped to be. Screen has awful whites and weird yellow . Pink. Green . Blue tints all over devices. Ive had 2. One was yellow. Next was pink. Its an issue all over xda. Most have this horrid problem. Touchwiz is boring. Design gets boring. Its almost too light. Like your holding air. Audio is pants. Battery sucks. Even with a custom rom. I havent enjoyed the s6 atall. Mainly down to the horrible screen tints that seems to pretty much be on all the handsets. Smh
I am using two devices for some time now, but I've had some issues with my S6 Edge, the screen rotation problem and give back to samsung and they returned back my money. HTC so far one of the best devices (M9) I've been using long time. So for so good except camera. Camera shoots bad quality photos compared to s6. 20,7mp camera is not better than m8's camera. If the camera on m9 was better, much more people would choose htc.
Between these two and ONLY these two? Probably the S6. Personally, I'd go for the G4 next month. I had massive problems with my S6, exchanged 3 times, gave up. Got the M9 for $300, and when compared to the $700 S6 it's a winner, but if the price is equal...

you asked in the HTC place, most will say M9 is better lol
I had the m8, and I'm just like you. I'm and HTC fan since the nexus one but I wasn't sure about the m9 because of the incremental update and the camera review but guess what.. I got it and its amazzzing !!
BTW, the camera is great just needs some tweaking thats all.
I never liked samsung or LG or most of the other phones, they really feel cheap but HTC feels damn premium.
Since you on the m7 it will be a big step with the m9, go for it and congratulation in advance.
Get the M9 unless camera quality is super important to you IMO. My S6 Edge had the rotation bug and I was not willing to risk getting stuck in a loop of getting defective replacements so I got the M9 to replace it. I'm not regretting it.
Things I did not like about my S6 Edge:
-Accelerometer defective out of the box
-Clueless and useless customer support. HTC support is way better
-Edge was very "sharp" feeling in hand
-Curve screen made things hard to type. Inside of my palm near my thumb kept "registering" on the screen as being touched.
-At certain angles, the whites looked pink
-Back button is on the right. WTF Samsung?
-Physical home button is still ugly, I don't like it.
-Phone is extremely light. Feels like a toy.
-Poor memory management. Apps had to keep reloading even when I had just used them.
-Touchwiz STILL has microstutters.
Things I liked about the S6 Edge:
-Screen was much brighter and more vibrant than the M9
-Camera took way better quality photos (which were upside down for me due to the rotation defect)
-Finger print reader worked flawlessly, way more convenient than PIN unlock
-First Samsung phone to look high quality
-Came with a fast charger. WTF HTC? Can't afford the extra 50 cents per phone?
-The speaker was surprisingly loud. Louder than my M9 (not nearly as good sounding, but still louder.)
I have both the m9 and a 128gb s6 edge. I love both devices for different reasons. They are both beautiful devices. That said my s6 has become my daily driver but really love both devices. I have my tablet sim in my m9 and do use it daily as well.
Having purchased (finally) my M9 I have to say after playing a bit yesterday with a friends S6 that I have no regrets what so ever. Touch Wiz is a nightmare and although the quality of construction of Samsung has apparently improved M9 is still a lot more robust and still feels like more premium. In fact my friend after playing with my M9 while I was playing with its S6 he commented "damned I made the wrong decision". BTW the let them stare motor of HTC is right on from what I can tell. Thanks guys for helping me make the right decision. ?

I had the s6 for 3 weeks. Samsung's quality control is shocking. Everything about the s6 is over rated. Screen is horrible

I really wonder why some people still talk about overheating problems ! It was resolved a long time ago after the first few updates by HTC.

The camera isn't that bad to be honest, it just doesn't reach the level of some other flagships such as the Galaxy S6 and the G4 (especially in low-light conditions). For the battery life, most of the m9 owners have noticed an improvement after the 6.0 update. I'm currently running a custom rom (ViperOne 4.2.1) and you can see my battery stats in the attached screen cap.

The heat issues still exist. Regardless of what people say, they just don't use, or should i say "abuse", the device enough.
That said, my phone has never overheated and switched off.
The camera leaves a bit to be desired. Choppy framerate and noise are the norm in picture mode but video is smooth and clear.
Boomsound is what sells this phone. It hasn't been beaten to this day for quality.

The only thing that bothers me about the camera is the lack of OIS.
Easiest way to put it if you want sense get a M8 if you don't get a 6P..

Would you recommend the M8 over the M9 even when they are att the same price level? I have a M8 myself today but I'm thinking about upgrading a family member from One S to a M9. At least here in my area they are about the same price (M8 16 GB vs M9 32 GB).

M8 is an amazing device, but M9 sucks period it's my biggest regret in life won't buy a HTC device after this if you want an expensive heater and device with no support for months then go for it 401 variant didn't get an update since July last year... we just got the MM update and it still had it's issues, I've had lots of build quality issues, saw other people with the same issues and even people on xda who're on their 3rd+ M9 camera software sucks the sensor is great but you just can't get a good picture from it, I replaced my M9 with an Nexus 6 and never looked back now just got a nexus 6P and it blew me away how great is it if that device is an option for you go for that you won't be disappointed To me the M9 feels like a mid-range with flagship pricing
Another +1 for the 6P honestly don't bother with the M9, I'm an HTC guy through and through, look at my signature for device history. The M8 was my favourite device to date, fantastic battery life, blazing performance, decent cameras (especially in low light). The M7 was also pretty amazing but the M9 in my opinion is a downgrade from the M8, camera in any low light situations is absolutely awful, battery life is poor, got far less SOT with the M9 than I did with the M8. I really hope the M10 is decent because HTC can't afford another release like the M9. The software support has gone down hill with the M9 too, they updated the M8 quite consistently but the M9 took forever to get marshmallow! I had the nexus 4 a few years ago and went straight back to HTC because I missed sense, I missed the features, (stock android wasn't as polished back then). Absolutely love my 6P, first non HTC phone I've owned in years and it's slowly becoming my favourite all time device, camera is fantastic, low light performance is incredible! Battery life is also very impressive, the device is obviously a lot bigger so consider if a phablet is going to be a comfortable size for you but if size isn't an issue I'd chose the 6P anyday of the week. Had the M9 from launch up until November so in that time I put it through its paces! Although a small feature, the finger print sensor is a fantastic little piece of hardware, it's so much faster than unlocking with a code or pattern. The thing is, the M9 isn't a bad phone, but considering the fact its a HTC & was released in 2015 I was expecting so much more!
Thanks I own now two devices and i will pick M9 anytime. 6p microphone sound so so weak comparing to M9 and stereo speakers more clear on M9 HANDS DOWN!
