M9 speakers VS Nexus 6 speakers - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone been able to compare the speakers of the M9 vs the Nexus 6? I am mainly concerned about speaker phone. Not only which phone is louder on speaker phone during a phone call but which phone is clearer and easier to understand. If anyone has any media, music and you tube comparison on the speakers I am also interested in those comparisons too.

I have both, and I personally think the N6 is just as loud and certainly clearer. I've found it much easier to understand people on the N6.

I just realized that more people maybe able to give a better comparison of the M8's speakers vs the Nexus 6. I do not want to double post but is there some way I can move this to the M8 or Nexus 6 and re ask the question so that I am not double posting.

Speaker hype

So I have heard lots of great things about the speakers on this phone and I'm trying to decide if it's a lot of hype or if I got a phone with bad speakers. I have had the phone for 10 days now and while the clarity is good I'm not impressed with how loud the speakers are. Example is 4 of us were standing around a table watching you tube video yesterday and I wanted some more volume but it was all the way up. We could all hear ok but it wasn't overly loud. Another example is I turned on music player and cranked it all the way up and took a shower, phone was about 3 feet from the shower and I could barely hear the music. So I'm looking for your opinion did I get sub par speakers or am I expecting to much from these speakers?

do you have another phone to compare it to so we can get an idea of comparable volume?

I have not had a chance to compare it to another HTC one,but I just compared it to my old droid incredible 2 and the incredible 2 is every bit as loud if not louder. The one sounds a little better but like I said it is no louder than the old incredible 2. Hoping someone that used to have a incredible 2 can let me know what they think also.

I just compared my old dinc2 with my One, playing the same songs on each phone separately and at the same time, and the One was a little louder than the dinc2. Not by much, but definitely louder. However, the audio quality of the One is much, much better. Though I will happily listen to audio on my One while working, I never did that with the dinc2 given its speaker audio quality. As far as max volume is concerned, mine is plenty loud and I don't need it to be any louder.
Maybe stop by a Verizon store and compare the volume of yours with the display phone.
Mine isn't that much louder than my wife's iPhone either.

I stopped by Verizon today and did just that. I loaded a pearl jam song on both phones on youtube and they sounded the same. But I do agree with you that the sound quality on the one is far superior to the incredible 2, I just wish it was a little louder.

And this is the kind of thing I had heard about the phones speakers before I got it to lead me to believe that the speakers are even better than they are. You must have some better acoustics in your shower than I do. Over all I am happy with the speakers so I wont complain to much.
I've basically found that while this phone isn't all that much louder than other devices I've had. I came from the S4 and that was pretty loud.
However, the One has infinitely better clarity when it comes to the audio. I'll take that. Now if by some crazy magic they can figure out bass, but given the space available I'm sure that will never happen.
I have and have had a lot of android devices. Some of which (Galaxy Nexus) the speaker volume was so low that is required many tweaks via the kernel and third party apps to make it even reasonable. I agree with you that there is a lot of hype in the "boom sound" of the HTC One. Personally, I don't find the volume to be extremely loud but I do find the quality of the sound to be better than any of my other devices. The thin devices we all love jam so much into their size that the speakers often suffer. If you prefer loudness over the quality of the sound there are third party apps you could try. For me the sound is plenty loud and sounds great.
Loudest phone i've ever had. Some things don't seem like they're are that much louder, if noticeable than other phones, but obviously you have the clarity. Youtube may not be the best test as the audio isn't always the greatest. One thing i can note is when volume is maxxed, the notifications are ridiculously loud.
Seems pretty loud to me. I use it to listen to music while I shower and the fan is on. Still hear it fine. I'll be damned if another phone could match that performance.
Seems to be hit and miss with people. I think some had unrealistic expectations. Honestly for me they are perfect. You have to realize in any noisy environment nothing will hold up short of a real larger speaker. These things are outstanding when compared to any other phone.
With beats enabled the volume seems a bit quieter but the quality is much better out of the speakers. If you need a little louder try turning off beats.
?
So which phone would everyone say is the loudest?
If I remember my specs correctly, since there are two speakers, the One can do stereo audio.
My droid DNA was louder than the One but you had to have the phone on a flat surface as a reflector.

Note 4 Call Quality and speakerphone (speakers in general)

Hey!
I was previously interested in the Sony Z2 but returned it because of issues with call quality, mainly the speaker being sh*t. I reckon the new Z3 will be of similar style. Although probably one of the best phones in the market, I can't live with the waterproofing making speakers worse.
The idea of a stylus and sketching on a phone intrigues me since I get so many ideas where ever and have little ways to scribble them down. Therefore I'm really considering getting a Note 4 even though I realize the real usage may be nonexistent in reality. Now, my question is, how is the speaker on the Note 4? I don't necessarily need stereo speakers, as the value of stereo on a smartphone is questionable but I do prefer decent sound quality. I talk A LOT on speakerphone and I want it to be crisp and clear. Also, how are youtube videos on the speaker?
PS. I'm coming from a SGS3 and want better battery life and bugless UI.
Anyone have a say on the speakerphone quality? And the onboard speaker in general.
I find the sound from the speaker load enough but a bit tinny. Speaker phone is good and YouTube videos are acceptable however I prefer using ear buds.
Ditto on what tbparkey said.

Upgrade from Nexus 5?

I'm still contemplating if the Nexus 5X is a worthy upgrade from my current (almost 2 years old) Nexus 5.
The main things that bug me with the Nexus 5 are:
- battery life, no explanation necessarily
- camera focus, especially in less than ideal light situations
- weak speaker, which sometimes results in missed calls and makes it impossible to show someone a clip in a slight noisy environment without having to hold the phone to his ear to hear it and then not being able to watch the screen
- weak vibration motor, which often results in missed calls
- hairline cracks at several places on the sides of the phone
Some side notes:
- I'm a Chrome power user, I usually have about 20 tabs open
- I live in Europe, so we don't have subsidized prices here, which means the 32GB 5X will cost me €529/$584
- I like being able to use my phone one handed so all phablets (including the 6P) are out
Will the Nexus 5X be a worthy upgrade?
Your first three points about the nexus 5 will not be addressed with the 5x. The speaker is about the worst speaker for a phone. The camera in low light will theoretically be better but without any image stabilization the low light shots are going to suffer unless you use a tripod and battery hasn't been great...Better than the Nexus 5 but it's brand new so it is to be expected. Only time will tell whether the sides crack on the 5X. It is still a cheaply made plastic phone. You will be able to feel the vibrator better but the sound will make you not want to use it. Not worth the cost to upgrade.
I absolutely loved my Nexus 5. The two things that ultimately made me ditch it were the terrible camera and poor battery life. I always said, if Google made essentially the same phone with a slightly bigger screen, a better camera, and a bigger battery, it would be the perfect phone. Low and behold... Google did exactly that with the 5X.
I'll say though, the speaker is still "weak". Although, I'm not sure why anyone would want stereo speakers out of their phone. If you need that then the Nexus lineup will never be for you. The Vibrator motor is still very weak, but I tend to disable it completely on my phones anyway.
I actually just came back to the 5X from an iPhone 6s and I have to say that, aside from the screen, I don't miss anything about the 6S.
Moral of the story is that if you like your Nexus 5 but wish it just had a bit "more", then the 5X is a great choice.
Basically, it's worth the upgrade.
Go for it

I suppose what I really meant was that I am not sure why anyone would choose a phone due to it's speakers, period. How often are you listening to music through your phone's speakers? If the answer is more than 1-2 times per month, I have to ask, why?
If you rely on your phone's speakers for music, why not just invest the $30 - $60 in a decent bluetooth speaker, instead?

I love watching YouTube or other video on my Nexus 6 with the big screen and stereo speakers. Bluetooth speakers are a pain to carry around. I wouldn't make stereo speakers a deal breaking feature, but they are nicer to have than not.

Seems like there are no alternatives available at this time. I'm in the market for a new high-end stock Android smartphone which can be comfortably used in one hand. Seems like the industry is not getting that the majority doesn't want phablets (otherwise the iPhone 6(S) Plus would be more popular than the regular 6(S)). I've been viewing/reading so many reviews and comments from people who want 6P specs in a 5X package. Nowadays it's more and more coming down to chosing between a high-end phablet or a mid-range normal sized phone.

I'm not sure yet if I'm gonna like the slightly bigger size of the 5X and reading through the battery life thread, there are lots of users who are experiencing about the same battery life as with their Nexus 5.
So it seems the only area which got noticeably improved is the camera and that's a lot of money for just that, especially in Europe. Actually video recording is worse than the Nexus 5 since the 5X is lacking OIS, which results in very shaky videos. Therefore I don't think you can call it a great choice or a worthy upgrade.
Google should offer me a job so at least one person there understands what people want in their Nexus. Easiest solution being to offer two phones with identical specs with the only difference the size of the phone (like Apple does). Personally I don't mind the plastic build of the 5X, it makes it easier to handle and since winter is coming it won't be as cold as for example the 6P.
I switched from the Nexus 5, and so far I am liking the experience, But I have only used my new phone actively for just over a day. I was getting pretty poor battery life from my old phone, but with the upgrade to Marshmallow, I think the battery usage on my old phone improved. So any battery improvement comparison could be as much a result of the newer Android version as the bigger battery in the new phone.
I think the 5X speaker is better than the 5. When I listen to podcasts on the nexus 5 speakerphone, I had to have the volume all the way up to hear it. When I listen on the Nexus 5X I don't have to turn it up that high. I think it is about 3/4th of the way up. Also, I think the speaker placement is better on the 5X than the 5. On the 5, the speaker pointed down and seemed easily muffled by covering the speaker grill, with even just a single finger. The 5 speaker faces the front, and doesn't seem as easily blocked.
My main reasons for getting the Nexus 5X were that it was pure Google Android with the available factory images, I wanted to move on to Project Fi, and I think the Nexus 6 line of phones is too large.

- Battery life on the Nexus 5X is better but not by a huge amount.
- Camera is better all around.
- Speaker on the Nexus 5X isn't great but is a slight improvement over the Nexus 5. It's reasonably clear and does get louder. Honestly I don't know what people expect from a TINY speaker. I don't even really use the speaker that much to begin with so it doesn't really bother me.
- The vibration motor on the Nexus 5X is MUCH MUCH better than the one on the Nexus 5. It is actually strong enough to get your attention when in a pocket or on a table.
- I never had any issues with hairline cracks on my Nexus 5 so I can't respond to that one.
As for the one handed usage the Nexus 5X is worse than the Nexus 5 which already wasn't that great for one handed usage. The bezels on the Nexus 5 are huge. Of course it's not nearly as bad as a phablet like the Nexus 6P for obvious reasons.
Nexus 5X works great for me on Sprint
I used the Nexus 5 on Sprint for two years and got along great except for the microphone giving out and staying on KitKat to keep WiFi tether going. I've used the 5X for a week now and am very pleased. The 5X radio gives me much better reception and the call quality is much better. I never could get lollipop and then marshmallow to work on the 5 without loosing data. On the 5X data works great and with root the WiFi tether rocks on the 5X. Zero regrets here about making the switch to a 5X. For me the swich brought better cell service, better battery, clearer conversations, and faster tethering all while running on Marshmallow.
I've decided upgrading to the 5X is not worth it. The only notable improvement is the camera and the addition of the fingerprint scanner. Everything else is a minor upgrade or the same as the Nexus 5. Hopefully next year a worthy upgrade based on the 820 SoC.
Bought a 5000mAh Xiaomi powerbank for 15 dollar instead.

Rate your HTC 10 speakers

Hey XDAers!
I'm considering buying the HTC 10 after my amazing experience with the One M7.
Just wondering how the built-in speakers on the 10 match up to other flagships and previous HTCs. I heard the M9's speakers were really loud and better than the M8's, which were in turn louder and better than the M7's. My current feelings on the 10, from reading reviews, is that they're great quality but not that loud, and not great for watching videos in landscape mode.
Whoever's had old Ones and/or recent flagships and can comment on the loudness and quality of the 10's built-in speakers, please share your thoughts! I'd love to be able to start playing good quality, loud music while cooking, showering, or at gatherings with friends.
Edit: Mods; maybe this should be in Guides, News, and Discussion instead?
While I do think the speakers sound good, they are not loud enough, they are around same level as my s7 edge but lower than my G5.
I has the M7, M8 and now the 10. I think they're just fine. Great sounding, loud enough. Is it the loudest? No. But will you get damn good quality from these speakers given the right media? You bet you will.
Agreed they're not loud, the quality is very good though

Awesome speakers and are clearer than my M8. HTC focused more on clarity it appears.
In terms of loudness? Someone had tools to test and made a video showing the 10 having slightly louder speakers.
I guess many think the opposite because of how big htc made their speakers look on their M series but if you were to open them, the speakers are actually less than half of the actual grill.

Quality is very good, but what is missing is the real stereo sound from M7-M9. M10 still sounds good, better than S7. Its just not the same than before, especially if your watching a video in landscape, where stereo really mattered.
But still, its miles better than G5 and S7, cause the sound is coming right at you, not from the bottom in the direction of your hand (like S7).
In the shower, I could clearly hear music from my 6P playing. With the 10, that is no longer the case - sounds like any past phone in terms of volume. It is definitely a little higher quality than any other phone I've had though, but not bounds and leagues ahead to make it a worthwhile sacrifice for volume. So if loudness is what you're after, you will be disappointed.
Thanks guys; it's incredibly useful having a wide variety of opinions.

This disappoints me. The 6P looks great but is too big for me and stock Android is not as customisable as I'd like; otherwise I probably would've already bought it.
Maybe there's a way to increase loudness without losing too much clarity/quality? I've heard V4A can increase volume by up to 50%.
The sound quality is good, but it is not louder that HTC M8, when you hear music you can hear in both speakers, same if you are choosing a ringtone, but when you hear the phone ringing IS VERY BAD, it sounds muffled and low because the ring only sound in the lower speaker
Does somebody try to root and place viper4Afor fix this?
I have the same issue when the phone is ringing. It just doesn't sound right.
I wrote to HTC customer online ( chat) they told me that it could be a bug, may should be included in the future updates. You can to write to chat or HTC technical support so they could see several people with the same thing and fix it a little bit more quick. If somebody can help us---- welcome
So my phone isn't faulty. I thought my phone has some kind of issue for what it sounds to tiny in landscape position. My last G4 with back speaker sounded so loud and definitely not bad than Htc 10. Somebody should find some way to louden the output.

Speakerphone (loudness, clarity)

Proper etiquette aside (hint: don't use speakerphone while doing your "business" in a public bathroom), rate this thread to express how you think the Google Pixel's speakerphone performs. A higher rating indicates that you love it: it's loud and it's clear.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Very average for me. Not as loud as I would have hoped.
Still waiting for mine to come in (should be in Tuesday). Will compare it to my S6 and see what happens.
Average at best. My friend and I were playing Battlefield 1 last night and talking on speaker phone, he also has the Pixel, at times we could not hear each other very well. I actually think the speaker on the 5X was better....
I would have to agree that the speaker is average at best when it comes to call quality. My Galaxy S6 was louder. Though audio playback for non-calls seems to be a fair amount better than my S6.
Anyone having issues turning their speaker all the way up and when watching video get like a popping sound?

It's not the loudest I've heard but boy, compared to the 5X the 5X is a joke (I have both phones).
Sound is louder, deeper and more clear. Comparing to the 5X it's in a completely different level...
Used to have hands free conversations while driving with the phone in a cradle... but with the Pixel I can barely hear someone even with the volume at maximum. Not brilliant.
Better quality and clarity from the single speaker than I expected.

Yes, totally. If you've heard a blown speaker, it kind of sounds like that at the higher levels.
Can other people either confirm out deny this? I'm wondering if this is a "feature" or a defect.
Thanks.
I chat with support and they told me that it is an audio issue with the videos since the issue wasn't consistent. They said to factory reset my phone. I did that, played the same vdieo over and over and the issue is no longer there.

I only noticed it when I was using the speakerphone during a call. I had to factory reset it later for a different reason so I'll check on it tomorrow but it still sounds tinny as Hell. And I'm coming from a Droid Turbo 1st generation.
Very average speaker! Waiting for Root so we can do some audio modifications and make it atleast decent quality.
Yeah it isn't as loud as my Nexus 6P, nor is it front facing. Or a dual setup. But it isn't as bad as I'd feared. Still plenty loud and crisp.

I wanna eat my words and some humble pie too. The speakers are almost as loud as the 6P if not equally loud. The 6p has better dynamic range but I felt that in some tracks, the Pixel was crisper. It's really a toss up.
Add they're not front firing, I have no issue calling up assistant for time or weather when I'm in bed. Yes, I'm that guy who always places phones face down. The audio just pumps out the grill without any muffling whatsoever.

I haven't had enough time to test but mine seem to sound fine for what they are. Definitely not loud enough, but quality is on par to all the phones ive used minus an htc m9.
I actually prefer bottom speakers or speakers on the back for my particular use. I use my phones primarily for Google maps in my semi. I've used the sony z3 compact, htc m9, moto x, moto x 2nd gen, iphone 5s/6(s)/7., and oneplus 3
The best phone for audio i can actually hear while driving has been the 1st gen moto x. Sony, htc, snd 2nd gen moto x with front firing speakers are the worst. Iphone 6s better, iphone 7 best for iphones. One plus 3 probably in at #2 but they are not the best quality (more on the tinny side w/ lack of mid-low range).
I will have to compare the pixel next week.
Are there any mods yet for this? I would like my speakers to be loud as well coming from S7 Edge boy this speaker needs help! Anyone?

That's certainly odd. I did an EDM/Dubstep, standard voice, rock, and opera music test on the Pixel and Pixel XL compared to my Droid Turbo 2 and the iPhone 7 and 7+. This is what I came to:
-Pixel and Pixel XL are quite loud for a single/mono speaker setup, about equal in loudness to my Droid Turbo 2. All were quieter than the iPhone 7 and 7+, which is expected given their stereo/dual speaker setup.
-The iPhones possess a thin, metallic, tinny sound from both speakers, with a miniscule amount of bass or depth to the sound. The mids and highs were somewhat ear-piercing and overly sharp, and were overall not managed well. However, this is better than the S7 Edge from what I can tell, which sounded muffled, quiet, and tinny to me, when I watched a video on a Verizon display unit. However, I will have to do another test to truly give comparative results.
-The Pixels were quieter than the iPhones off the bat, which is to be expected, since they have mono speaker setups. But, the sound out of both of them was exactly as loud as my Turbo 2, and the Pixel's speakers have an impressive amount of depth. Bass was definitely present here, moreso than the Turbo 2, and the sound was not thin by any means. The mids and highs were present and did not sound tinny or not properly recognized by the speaker. However, the treble lacked the "wow" factor in comparison of the Turbo 2, whose treble was more crystalline and more alive, as well. Not that the Pixels sounded dead by any means, because their treble was also well represented and sound, at that high of frequencies, was not distorted, like it was a little bit with the iPhones, playing high-frequency sound (treble) in the soundtracks I used, but the highs and treble were more enhanced. So, it seems like the Pixel is better suited for bass and lower frequency sounds, whereas my Turbo 2 is better suited for treble and higher frequency sounds.
-In conclusion, the iPhones are OK in loudness for a dual-speaker setup, though their sound is thin, metallic and tinny, offering little to no depth of sound, especially compared to the Pixels, and not representing higher frequency sounds or voices properly, often falling apart in the treble compared to my Turbo 2. The Pixels are quieter than the iPhones, but offer the most depth of sound and bass of the three, and tie with the Turbo 2 for the least distortion of sound. Thehigher frequency sounds and the treble are present and well-represented with little distortion, but my Turbo 2 has a more crystalline, more alive upper register than the Pixel and especially the iPhone 7.

BTW in loudness, all three of the aforementioned smartphones are a joke compared to my 6P. In quality, however, the Pixel and my Turbo 2 come close to my 6P. The iPhone 7 gets decimated by my 6P though.
Low and bad quality
In call volume is definitely lower than my old Zuk Z2. Now I have to crank up the volume to max and still have a hard time in noisy locations. The speaker quality is acceptable. But I expected loud speakers when we are paying top dollar.
Overall, Pixel gives off an average phone vibe with overpriced price.
