[Q] Buy now or wait until S6 release? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Hey all, have been looking hard at the Note 4 as replacement for my aging 4S. Looking to get away from ios, wouldn't be my first android device nor my first samsung. I would be buying the phone full price, no contract, and was wondering if I should buy now or wait till the S6 release and see if there is a price drop?
Thanks
Coop

Check slickdeals.net they have deals for note 4

Galaxy S6 release won't effect the price of the Galaxy Note 4...
Both are two different series in phone..
Now if you want Galaxy S6, it will b cheaper then Note 4
The price of the Galaxy S6 should b the retail price of the Galaxy S5 today... Note 4 stays the same...
3 months back I made the switch from iPhone 4S to Note 4 glad I did... all iPhones are the same
Note 4 has the removable battery and SD slot that the Galaxy S6 and iPhone don't have
In many ways the Galaxy S6 is a step back from Galaxy S5 I just like the look better and new figure print sensor but looks are not everything, it's features or what it includes also sells the phone... I won't b buying Galaxy S6 nor Note 5
Phones are personal preference, so goodluck! I can say I just recently read something about Best Buy having a good deal on Note 4 like $200 off retail price or something close but I didn't read to much into it, it may only have been for people who sign up on a contract...

Those Best Buy deals were for contract Note 4s.
I got my Note 4 a few weeks ago to replace an LG G3 my son decided to throw and destroy. I was going to wait for the S6...and I still think I'm going to get one...but the N4 is a fantastic phone and you can't go wrong with it if you like the size. I'm really happy w/ the Lollipop update except for the lock screen notifications (I wish it was like stock android still...doubt tap to open is a MUST) so I can definitely recommend it without reservation.
I just want the same camera (or better) in a smaller footprint. The camera is probably the most important aspect in a phone to me, so the S6 is really enticing since it's essentially the Note with a smaller form factor. Removeable battery and SD Card don't even move the needle for me, so that's not an issue.

I'm still on the 4.4.4 kitkat update... tho I do have the OTA of 5.0.1... but I don't like the notification pop up... so I'm staying where I am and 5.0.1 isn't much of a update rather wait for 5.1
But personally coming from a iPhone with out a removable battery and SD card really limits the phone.. space wise and battery
I guess depends on how much you update phones but personally, I update every 2 to 3 years an once the phone get to 1st year on a internal battery. It don't last as long and needs to b replaced. For this reaosn removable battery is nice just simply buy a new battery for like $12, all fixed... where on internal phone it's going to cost you $60 mayb more from a phone repair store... or if you do it your self it would b like $20 but a pain (talking from experience, just not simple)
SD card is nice just to add extra storage your right it don't move from my phone but it's having it what counts... Note 4 has 32gb plus 64gb sd card... no reason to need space but on 32gb my phone would b full... plus i bought 64gb card for $30
These are two reasons y I came to this phone and away from iPhones, my iPhone is still a great phone but needs a new battery so I put the money towards a new phone instead since I kno it will have same issue in time... plus memory was always a struggle phone always full, alot times went to take a pic just to see a pop saying not enough free space....
Plus the note 4 camera is great... It's very close to the one in Galaxy S6... not much difference...
As I said its all personal preference... it's what you want and how your going to use the phone...

My Dilemma - What to do?

Hi Everyone!
I'm thinking of getting a new phone.
My work allows me to replace my phone every two years at a steep discount. Currently, I can buy the Note 2, for 380$ before taxes.
However, I am also thinking maybe I'll buy the Nexus 4 at 309$ for the 8gb one.
So do I buy the Nexus 4, and buy the Note 2 to flip for a profit or just buy the Note 2 and forget the Nexus 4.
Had I not tried the Note 2, I would not be having this dilemma, but after trying it, I'm kind of enamored by it.
What would you do and why?
You know what im having the same dilemma myself and I currently own the note 2 and iam struggling to decide if I should return it and take the leap and get the nexus 4...its all really down to wat your looking for...which phone are you leaning more towards

I've always had phones that were running some variant of Android with a skin.
And I've always rooted and loaded some variant of CM. Was hoping to go Nexus this time around, so I can get the latest and greatest before all other phones.
However, what you get with the Note 2, it's form factor, power, battery, expandable mem, removable battery... ugh...

True I see where your coming from on that...the truth is nexus development wise seen as mecca whereas the galaxy phones sometimes are little behind...I think you should goto a t-mobile store and play with both and see what you like...run a few tests... like do multiple tasks at once and see how battery life trickles down....see which phone gets hot and which one doesn't...feel the textures of the of devices (especially the nexus since its back is made of sum sort of glass) and etc... I love the note 2 but...I feel like the updates are going to be hot/cold, its hella expensive (for just the phone itself) , and development wise.. idk cant predict that one...but the positives surpass the very few negatives...the main argument with the nexus is its lack of LTE /glass back and supposedly the battery is kind of whack...but thats all reviewers speculation and comments...the best thing for us might be to physically see the devices and go with what we can use daily and satisfy us for however long we intend to use them...because think about it you have a choice...either choice in my opinion is a win but I think this will all fall down to what we prefer

Get the Note II... the Nexus 4 is 8GB... without any expandable memory (dumb idea Google). You'll burn through that 8GB in about 3 minutes (rocking 16GB + 64GB microSDXC)
Well if lack of lte and micro sd doesn't bother you don't think further get the nexus !
And one more thing if the above guys calculations are good then your note 2's 16+64 gb will get exhausted in approximately 26 minutes of usage not to mention that it'll only last only 6 minutes if you don't bother buying a 64 gb memory card
Don't get me wrong,I really like the Nexus 4 but it's really got nothing on the Note 2. It's on par with the Note on a few aspects and does have us beat on some astetics but in terms of functionality and features it's no better the the Galaxy Nexus.
Only reason to get it over the Note is for the software updates, but (and 2 years ago I never thought I'd say this) Samsung has been doing just fine with it's software updates and there are sure to be plenty of options to get the latest and greatest on the Note here on xda.
Also without external storage you're not going to get much use out of the S4 Snapdragon, have more then 1 HD game and a couple hundred songs and you're out half the available memory. Not to mention that you don't get the full 8 or 16 gigs to use, you lose quite a bit to the OS between the data, cache, and system partitions. All that power with nothing to use it on is disappointing.
Just my thoughts. LG made a killer device, but without the expandable memory or 32 gigs of internal space like the AT&T and Sprint ones, the Nexus 4 is kinda the runt of the liter.
noted for future reference on my Note 2

how is that a steep discount? the note is $420 with a $50 mail in rebate =$370 and the nexus 4 is being sold on the playstore for $300
its a steep discount when you compare the note 2 to its retail price but considering your company is upgrading and renewing a 2 year..its actually costing you $10 more...they are just passing the savings onto you
secondly...if i were you...i'd buy the note 2 and then decide whether or not you actually want to keep it..you can easily sell it for $600+...so you would kinda be getting the nexus 4 for free if you flipped the note 2 then bought the nexus 4
The note 2 available to me is 380$ no contract. They're giving the phones at cost price to us. So I'm not locked into any contract.
Yeah. I'm going to wait a bit till someone has a nexus 4 at work and will try it out.
My plan is either buy note 2 and flip it and get nexus 4 16gb or keep it. We shall see.

Not 100% certain why people are ga ga over the nexus 4. There are so many detractors, from microsd slot, to LTE, to removable battery... etc. If it's the unlocked bootloader, or no carrier bloat, just snag a Galaxy Nexus. (and to the guy who said Galaxy phones were behind, uh, the Galaxy Nexus is still far AHEAD of many phones out there. I think you meant the S3 and Note2, which are still AHEAD of most phones out there) At the end of the day, you will miss your roomy microsd, your battery, your S-Pen, etc.
Now if people would just root your phones and tinker more, instead of waiting for the next rom guy to package it for you, we would all be in a better place.

Nexus 6

I'm liking my G3 right now, but is anybody else excited for the N6? May have to use a jump upgrade for that bad boy. The features sound amazing and the design looks intriguing.
Tempted but too big, too expensive( for a nexus) and no removeable storage. Not only that but its made by motorola which is known for personalizing phone to your liking and yet only offer 2 colors.

I had a Z Ultra GPE and liked it, with the Nexus 6 being half an inch smaller, I feel that it would be a much better experience!
yES, unlike others, i do not think its expensive for a flagship phone. The fACT that other nexus devices were cheaper in cost, does not make this one expensive. As it is a completely different device, different manufacture, better specs ect...
I just paid $598 for the g3 and i would GLADLY pay another $50 for a nexus 6. And its cheaper than the Note 4 and Iphone 6..
I am going to sell my G3 and jump on the nexus 6 as soon as it comes out. The only thing that sucks is that it does not have a SD card slot or a removable battery, but I can live with that...
I have a G3 and the wife has a Jump to use. I'm going to use it. lol I think I might get the Note 4 and then check out the Nexus 6 when it comes out. If I like the Nexus better then I might return the Note 4 and get the Nexus. I have 30 days to return a phone with my discount that I have. I guess I might have to pay a restocking fee. The wife will get my G3.

I want one but I'm going to wait. good chance that price drops... I came from the Nexus 5 and liked it alot..
I'm not too wprried about removable storage. I had the Flex before the G3 and honestly i switch to my Flex every once in a while cuz i miss using it
me too just waiting to move to the nexus 6 I always had nexus devices
#nexus6 shall be mine. Guaranteed updates more development and sorry but the g3 has too much lag regardless of all the tweaks. I need a pure Google experience.
I'm getting the nexus 6 as well.. I like the g3 but there is no lollipop date or eta and I'm not holding my breath..
Nexus 6 here as well, like the G3, but I'm a fiend for development and this is where Nexus shines.
The Nexus 6 looks like an amazing phone but the lack of SD card slot is what's keeping me from the switch.

I have a 64 gig sdcard in my g3 ATM and 32 on board have not touched the onboard storage and only used 5 gigs on the sdcard
Everything is stored in the cloud
With copy I have 140 gigs of storage
So its not a big deal for me bit I can see for others it would be a issue

Yea one of the biggest gripes for any phone company are the updates. Never owned a Nexus phone, but i do like plus size phones. I had the Note 2 and Flex. A 6 inch Nexus is actually the deciding factor
Count me in for the Nexus 6. I'll be placing a midnight blue one on pre-order online on the 29th. For everyone who is passing on the Nexus because of the lack of an SD card spot, you should consider buying a meenova. I still have mine from when I had the original HTC one and they work great. Very cheap and ultra portable. I'm sure it'll be even more convenient with the nice big batteries that most of these phones are getting nowadays. I'd hate for anyone to miss out on any great phones because they don't come with built in SD slots. Check them out here http://www.meenova.com/st/p/mrg2.html

Should i return my droid turbo for a note 4?

I just got a droid turbo 64gb ballistic nylon ..I am coming from a galaxy s3 and i was trying to choose between the 2 and thought maybe the note 4 might be too big but after getting home etc im having a bit of buyers remorse.. naked android is fine and all but im not really going to use the moto voice functions and the camera is meh.. the bigger note is a little imposing but if i can handle 5.2 on the turbo fine i figure 5.7 is fine as well .. i almost never 1handed use (im 6ft big hands anyways) and after seeing some s pen demos and camera shot im close to returning my turbo for a note 4... i would love some pros and cons of the note 4 and any experiences you guys have owning your note 4 thanks in advance
I would. The note 4 is a nice phone and I really like. I'm coming from a mdk S4. I had the same question as you for size. The size is perfect.
thanks my wife has an s5 and we have a galaxy tab and i bought her a gear 2 neo smartwatch for xmas i should have stayed in the family
Remember that you are in a note 4 forum so there will be some bias. I love the note. Came from the note 2. I have 0 regrets and I love the s pen. It is a game changer. Camera is pretty good. It is a larger phone but to me not too big. Although I will say I hope they don't go any bigger. One handed operation is not an issue for anyone because of the 1 quick 1 handed operation feature. All you do is swipe back and forth from the sides and it shrinks the whole screen to that side. And you can also adjust that screen. Bigger or smaller. I attached a picture but not sure how if it shows it.
Biggest deal breakers are no SD card and no battery. I love my 128gb SD card and with 5.0 allowing apps to save data to the SD card again makes it even better.
I will say that if you like to root it is not looking good. I would not get this phone on hopes that it will get root and unlocked bootloader. But to honest, I don't miss it at all. This is coming from someone who has jail broken/rooted every single phone.
Just my 2¢. Good luck.

this. i am rocking my note 4 with 160 gb of total space and 3 removable batteries. i am selling my nexus 6 which doesnt have sdcard or removable battery. dump the turbo man. even though note only has 16 mp camera i think the software is better therefore it takes better photos then the turbo. This is my perfect phone!
I came from the Droid Turbo Ballistic 64 gig and can say without a doubt the Note4 is a better device all around. The build quality is better, the screen is larger, extSD support and the camera is quicker. I'm 6ft with big hands too and prefer the larger phone. The Turbo is a nice phone but the lack of a extSD, removable battery and no reboot option from the power menu killed it for me. Both have no root for the retail but that isn't a issue for me, there are two other rooted S5's here in case I get bored. I had the Turbo for two weeks, the stock Android got really boring and the camera lag was horrible. Both cameras aren't the best with the stock app so I would suggest a 3rd party app like A Better Camera. I ended up purchasing the app but the free version was nearly just as good. To sum it up I'm happy with my decision to go back to Samsung and the Note4.
Ok guys i pulled the trigger.. I called Verizon and i got the last black note 4 they had in stock .. (at first she told me only white then hold on a few seconds and someone just cancelled their order) I don't even have to leave my home . The new note 4 is being mailed to me and i just have to put the turbo in the box and slap on a prepaid label and im all done and its only like $2 more a month .. thanks for the feedback and i look forward to sharing my stories with my note 4
Good choice

You will love it
I like droid turbo and where Motorola is going with their devices but...they're just not quite there yet imo. Note 4 is just a better phone all around if you don't mind touchwiz
I too started with the turbo ballistic backing 64 gig version. I wanted to love that phone but turned out that the note 4 was just a better choice for me. The turbo IMO is a sweet looking phone more so than my note 4 but the wow factor didn't seem to match up with the hype I've heard people talking about . don't get me wrong it's a very nice phone but after getting used to the size of the note 3 it just seemed like the turbo was tiny which it isn't but just felt that way. I also didn't like the fact that you couldn't pull the battery and no SD slot. I liked the note 3 I had but I love the note 4 so far. It's fast has a beautiful screen and battery lasts longer than I thought it would. And another big plus with me is that all of my other phones use the same size sim as the note 4 so I can switch phone anytime I want. If I would have kept the turbo then i could only use that one phone with the sim that it took. If Verizon still had the 30 day period maybe I would have been able to really test out the turbo but only having 2 weeks I went ahead and returned it for the 4 which turns out was right f decision. Jesse

IMHO if you are not a phone junky, not someone who actually uses your phone all day, or actually if your not a person who is into Android enough to read this website.... Then the Turbo is the better phone. Especially if you've been an iPhone person and this is your first Android.
BUUUUT, if you know a little, and actually understand what touch wiz is comparabley, the the Note 4 is miles ahead.
Ignorance is bliss
I just got the note 4 yday, had to exchange it cause mine was defective. While waiting, I played with the turbo and was impressed. I like the heavy duty feel it has. Makes it feel less fragile than the note and I'm really hating touchwiz right now. Really debating on taking the turbo.
had a note 2 and have a note 3. i *just* got a turbo thinking the extra battery and more accurate gps/compass (you note 3 owners know what i mean) would be more important but I already have buyer's remorse.
as much as people bag on touchwiz, the added features are something i find extremely useful. quick toggles, lockscreen shortcuts. all the settings tiles. these things are not there on the turbo and with no root it won't be happening any time soon.
i thought i could move on, and i can't. i'll be putting in for an exchange tomorrow.
and, fwiw, the compass/gps doesn't seem much better than the note 3 and the battery life is certainly not that of a phone with 3900mAh on tap. totally disappointed. its a great phone, but it i thought it would be better, and it's not.

Most likely the Note 5 will have a 4K display but I really do hope it still comes with a removable battery and SD Card slot...
if not... honestly, I will be out of the Note Series. If the S6 is a sign of things to come... (as it usually is) then we are in big trouble my friends... (if you think the same as I do)
Anyway... regarding this thread...

Take care everyone!
Lol love how you said iPhone s6. Because that is exactly what it is !! I could care less about the removable battery. it lasts me all day anyways. But no expandable storage ?? Cmon now! Sure I haven't even used half of my GBs. But Imagine if the s6, the most expensive model 128gb for over $1000. Now imagine the NOTE series. Since its always been $150-300 MORE. I love my note 4. And if Samsung doesn't get the BIG picture that android people really don't give a crap about materials. We care about the specs and what matters to US. IPhone people only care of how there phone looks. Even tho its sporting 2012 tech with 2015 architecture. The note 4 is perfect in terms of quality. Got a super durable gorgeous phone. And if t he new note 5 comes without an SD slot of removable battery. It BETTER, BETTER have something even better to accommodate for the loss
---------- Post added at 11:26 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:25 AM ----------
Lol sad to say if they go that route the new note 5 will cost you $1000. The cheapest...$1300 the expensive. And if they do some crap like the edge... $1300-1600 FFFFFFD THAAAAAAAAATTT
I'll just stick with my N4 for a long time since I just bought my 128gb Samsung SD and with back ups and keeping a few roms in case I get bored as well as 2k videos I can fill 128 in a good amount of time so not being able to swap it out won't work but let's be reasonable here, I won't spend that much money on a 128gb phone as it will be well over $1000 I can't do 64gb anymore, that would be stepping back, and no the cloud won't work because we're I work there is no service, it's underground so I need hard storage. I'm sure there will be plenty of people who buy it but I also love to replace my battery every 6 months with a new one, then after a year switch back to the original one, keeps it lasting longer. So long story short, no, I'll won't get a closed phone without memory expansion and, and, removable battery.
I call it SI6 the Samsung iphone 6. Very disappointed
Trust me I need my micro SD too, But it wouldn't shock me at all if Note 5 doesn't have a micro SD card. Look how google removed users rights to have write access to external storage without root.
I will go back to blackberry and back to crack berry lol
I just won't update until they get the message. If they don't get it, then I will look to the other manufacturers. If everyone is going this route, then hello Apple...
And also gave write permissions back on 5.0 lolipop. {sd card}

if not... honestly, I will be out of the Note Series. If the S6 is a sign of things to come... (as it usually is) then we are in big trouble my friends... (if you think the same as I do)
Anyway... regarding this thread...
In case you want to try the latest Apps... (from the iPhone S6):

I agree, love my S pen but no sd or removable battery could be a deal breaker for me.

I just won't update until they get the message. If they don't get it, then I will look to the other manufacturers. If everyone is going this route, then hello Apple...

Good Idea Randy T-Mobile is a great company been with them 6 years they are very flexible when it come to paying on time lol. And yes if there is no removable parts or ext sd I will tap out as well

I read Marshmallow update will allow the SD to become actual Internal Storage or External. It is supposed to have an option. I have MM on my 2013 Nexus 7 but no sd with that to test. ..but thats the word..

note 5

Are u Happy or sad with direction they are taking the note line?
nope
No but I do like the design and the similarities with the S6 but the battery size stinks. I'll have to see how the battery lasts before I decide to buy one or not. The non removable battery and lack of externalSD are workable for me but a lame battery is not.
At this point like my computer i have to have at least a second drive. Being I have Note 4 DE and having failed SDcards I do have my stuff on my computer but the ease of backups and other items on my SDcard is huge for me especially when I change roms. Battery size is also important and right now this Note 4 has all I want.
Just makes me glad I have a Note 4! I like having a replaceable battery and I keep buying bigger and bigger SD cards.

No SD card is kind of a pain, but it's not the end of the world to me.
What I'm more interested in is finding out if Samsung will be releasing a developer edition!
I'm planning to keep my Note 4 DE til something cool comes along from another manufacturer. It's pretty obvious it will be my last Samsung phone. Also I have no contracts with Verizon now, as of this month. I'm going to check out the actual coverage of the other carriers. Of course if they really can't compare I'll stay with Verizon. Coverage is the only reason I signed up with them in the first place. I don't really mind if congestion slows them down some. I'm not going to put up with lost coverage.

I'm in the same boat. I would love to move to TMO but their coverage here is worst than "stinkie"...I mean like 2g is the best I can expect in my area.
I heard to compete with T-Mobile Verizon is did continuing the 2 year subsidiary plan contracts..... So without that I assume the Note 5 will be hella expensive.. Cause the only option would be to buy out right or V. edge type of installment plans

I am also sticking with my note 4 because I don't like anything about the note 5, I heard LG might be coming out with a note, is it true?
Note 5 is a joke! 3000mah battery, 32 or 64 gb only, no removable battery and no sd card slot. Not much worth the upgrade. I'm definitely waiting for the new LG Pro that will be better than the Note 5.

I came from the G4 and wasn't impressed with LG at all. The build quality stinks. I also had a S6 witch I liked a lot but prefer the display and size of the Note 4. If the battery on the Note 5 lasts like the S6 did for me I'll be OK with that. I has getting 2 to 3 days on one charge witch is fine for me.
You must be a very light user. Most people who are heavy users get about 6-7 hours tops on the GS6.

Yes, I'm a light user. My son has to charge his every day but it dose last him the day. It's definitely not for heavy users but at least it has wireless charging built in.
No way, no how, never, never, never
I never put my DE Note 4 on a charger. I go through up to four batteries a day. Just replace the battery and keep on rockin in the Free World . I sleep with the thing in my shirt pocket to get alarms. I am almost always online watching security Camaras, checking email banking alerts, tracking shipping using the hotspot or just using the thing for entertainment. I would go back to the Note 2 before I got a phone without a replaceable battery. I will never be tied down to a battery charger again. Don't even think about it.
I think the number 5 isn't a good number for Samsung. I think the Note 5 is going to go the same path as the S5. It isn't impressive enough to upgrade to from a Note 4. In fact, I think Samsung has taken several steps backwards, no SD, no replaceable battery, and smaller capacity battery. This is not a step forward in my opinion. I'm going to keep my Note 4 and look elsewhere if I need to. Sad...
