My Dilemma - What to do? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hi Everyone!
I'm thinking of getting a new phone.
My work allows me to replace my phone every two years at a steep discount. Currently, I can buy the Note 2, for 380$ before taxes.
However, I am also thinking maybe I'll buy the Nexus 4 at 309$ for the 8gb one.
So do I buy the Nexus 4, and buy the Note 2 to flip for a profit or just buy the Note 2 and forget the Nexus 4.
Had I not tried the Note 2, I would not be having this dilemma, but after trying it, I'm kind of enamored by it.
What would you do and why?

You know what im having the same dilemma myself and I currently own the note 2 and iam struggling to decide if I should return it and take the leap and get the nexus 4...its all really down to wat your looking for...which phone are you leaning more towards

I've always had phones that were running some variant of Android with a skin.
And I've always rooted and loaded some variant of CM. Was hoping to go Nexus this time around, so I can get the latest and greatest before all other phones.
However, what you get with the Note 2, it's form factor, power, battery, expandable mem, removable battery... ugh...

True I see where your coming from on that...the truth is nexus development wise seen as mecca whereas the galaxy phones sometimes are little behind...I think you should goto a t-mobile store and play with both and see what you like...run a few tests... like do multiple tasks at once and see how battery life trickles down....see which phone gets hot and which one doesn't...feel the textures of the of devices (especially the nexus since its back is made of sum sort of glass) and etc... I love the note 2 but...I feel like the updates are going to be hot/cold, its hella expensive (for just the phone itself) , and development wise.. idk cant predict that one...but the positives surpass the very few negatives...the main argument with the nexus is its lack of LTE /glass back and supposedly the battery is kind of whack...but thats all reviewers speculation and comments...the best thing for us might be to physically see the devices and go with what we can use daily and satisfy us for however long we intend to use them...because think about it you have a choice...either choice in my opinion is a win but I think this will all fall down to what we prefer

Get the Note II... the Nexus 4 is 8GB... without any expandable memory (dumb idea Google). You'll burn through that 8GB in about 3 minutes (rocking 16GB + 64GB microSDXC)

Well if lack of lte and micro sd doesn't bother you don't think further get the nexus !
And one more thing if the above guys calculations are good then your note 2's 16+64 gb will get exhausted in approximately 26 minutes of usage not to mention that it'll only last only 6 minutes if you don't bother buying a 64 gb memory card

Don't get me wrong,I really like the Nexus 4 but it's really got nothing on the Note 2. It's on par with the Note on a few aspects and does have us beat on some astetics but in terms of functionality and features it's no better the the Galaxy Nexus.
Only reason to get it over the Note is for the software updates, but (and 2 years ago I never thought I'd say this) Samsung has been doing just fine with it's software updates and there are sure to be plenty of options to get the latest and greatest on the Note here on xda.
Also without external storage you're not going to get much use out of the S4 Snapdragon, have more then 1 HD game and a couple hundred songs and you're out half the available memory. Not to mention that you don't get the full 8 or 16 gigs to use, you lose quite a bit to the OS between the data, cache, and system partitions. All that power with nothing to use it on is disappointing.
Just my thoughts. LG made a killer device, but without the expandable memory or 32 gigs of internal space like the AT&T and Sprint ones, the Nexus 4 is kinda the runt of the liter.
noted for future reference on my Note 2

how is that a steep discount? the note is $420 with a $50 mail in rebate =$370 and the nexus 4 is being sold on the playstore for $300
its a steep discount when you compare the note 2 to its retail price but considering your company is upgrading and renewing a 2 year..its actually costing you $10 more...they are just passing the savings onto you
secondly...if i were you...i'd buy the note 2 and then decide whether or not you actually want to keep it..you can easily sell it for $600+...so you would kinda be getting the nexus 4 for free if you flipped the note 2 then bought the nexus 4

The note 2 available to me is 380$ no contract. They're giving the phones at cost price to us. So I'm not locked into any contract.
Yeah. I'm going to wait a bit till someone has a nexus 4 at work and will try it out.
My plan is either buy note 2 and flip it and get nexus 4 16gb or keep it. We shall see.

Not 100% certain why people are ga ga over the nexus 4. There are so many detractors, from microsd slot, to LTE, to removable battery... etc. If it's the unlocked bootloader, or no carrier bloat, just snag a Galaxy Nexus. (and to the guy who said Galaxy phones were behind, uh, the Galaxy Nexus is still far AHEAD of many phones out there. I think you meant the S3 and Note2, which are still AHEAD of most phones out there) At the end of the day, you will miss your roomy microsd, your battery, your S-Pen, etc.
Now if people would just root your phones and tinker more, instead of waiting for the next rom guy to package it for you, we would all be in a better place.

Hi,
It's that time of year again when all the new phones will start rolling out.
Please use only this thread to discuss devices other than the Sprint S3 or to compare them and your upgrading options.

Either the Note 3 or the HTC max. Starting to get bored with touchwiz though.

Probably the pink note 3, I've only had black or white phones, maybe it's time for an exotic color for a phone. Lmao probably the only one amongst my friends that will have a pink phone.

Man you guys seeing the buzz on the Nexus 5? I think that's where it's at...
It supports 7 LTE bands - including TM's, AT&T's, and Sprint's! GSM & CDMA. nearly 5" 1080p screen, but in a body smaller than the nexus 4.

A 2300mah battery might be a deal breaker for me.
Note 3 as soon as my contract is up in February. There should be some sweet ROMs by then too.
*edit* Since Sprint decided to nerf the Note 3 with single band LTE, I'll be waiting for something else. I'm so glad Dazed has revived the Wicked Sensations ROM as I will be on thr SGS3 until next May.

I have to make a decision on what I'm going to do. I would like the Note 3, but my contract isn't up till August. I really don't want to stay with Sprint if the LTE in my area, 15-20 minutes from downtown St. Louis MO on the IL side, is going to be as bad as it is. I can get 4G LTE in Edwardsville IL fine however in Granite City IL, where I live, and some other areas I'm not getting it or it is hit and miss. I have been in the middle of it and still not been able to get it or not be able to stay connected to it. If they are not done in the are and it gets better I will keep the service till then and hold off till the Note 4 and keep my S3 as a backup. If they are done and this is the best it is going to get I'm going to T-Mobile. So it is stay till my contract is up, pay the ETF or try to get out of the ETF and hand over my S3. If I stay till my contract is up to switch then again I might as well hold off till the Note 4. Also if I go to T-Mobile and they're service is bad then I might as well drop them, pay full price for the phone and go with Straight Talk for the 45 a month. Only issue with that is now I don't have a warranty and if something happens to the phone I have to buy a new one at full price.
I was all excited for the Galaxy Gear, but after seeing it and thinking about it when I have been reading all the stuff on the Pulse reader I'm thinking I wont get it. I would like a smart watch, but none of them are causing me to want to buy them. I thought the Gear would be it, but it wasn't. I guess I will hold out to see what Google comes out with. I'm sure it will be stock Android that is made for a watch, and probably be called Nexus something or something Nexus. However I'm not having high expectations for it like I did with the Gear.
The last thing that was to be announced the other day that I was wanting to hear about was the camera from Sony. The price seems a little high to me for both and I'm not sure if I'm wanting it just because it is new tech to play around with. The price and the fact that if I'm going to carry that around and a phone I might as well just take a camera with me.
I'm trying to decide between the note 3 and the g2. I like the big screen and expandable storage and battery of the note 3. But the g2 has a better camera and triband lte so that it will match all future upgrades that sprint does to its network.
Which would you all choose.

I've been contemplating the N5 as well (once I learned the Google Play unlocked model will activate on Sprint).
I'm read for pure google and KitKat + earlier updates.
I don't really use any TW specific functionality and $399 for 32gb and no extending the contract is pretty good.
I want to move to T-Mobile next summer once my contract is over.
I may pull the trigger tonight or tomorrow.... we'll see
I've got the itch for a new phone. At first I was thinking Nexus 5, then LG G2, now I'm leaning toward waiting for the Galaxy S5. Hopefully it will come out sooner in 2014 rather than later. I love the look of the HTC One but I feel like if I just wait a little longer the specs of next year's phones will blow it away.
Humm... My 2 Cents
Would say HTC One Max is not worth it as it has the older Snapdragon 600 processor and lacks a MicroSD card slot and a removable battery. It does look nice though! The LG Nexus 5 is probably not worth it. It does have the Snapdragon 800 and 2 GB RAM, but... It only comes in 16/32 GB variants both without microSD card slots so no expandability. Really the craze about the Nexus 5 is nothing amazing. It comes with pure Android but you can get solid AOSP ROMs on all the other competitors anyway. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is probably the phone to get. It has the same new Snapdragon 800 processor as all its rivals but Samsung went ballistic and gave it 3 GB RAM. That's insane. None of the other competitors have that much RAM. And of course it has a microSD card slot and removable battery. The Sony Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra are also very much worth getting, both with the Snapdragon 800 and the more standard 2 GB RAM along with microSD card slots albeit no removable batteries. They are unique in that they are waterproof and have nice cameras and all and seem to be lower priced than the Note 3. Right now, the Note 3 seems pretty locked up but hopefully devs will make the phone go round so it is ROM friendly. Some carriers are worse than others.

[Q] Do i get this phone?!

Hello guys, i know this is more of a question type thread, but i just need to know this. Should i get this phone? i can get it for free on a £21 a month contract, is it still very fast and snappy? also, is the screen good? i would appreciate your feedback! thank you!
No one can really answer that question for you.
However, imo its still fast, snappy and I love the screen. I thought I would get the note 3 but it hasn't done enough to woo me.
I might be tempted to look at the lg g2 if I had no phone. But I do so I won't.
I hope that helps in some way.

I'd say the Note 2 is worth getting if your budget doesn't allow for a newer, fancier handset. How long is the contract? If it's 24 months then you might want to look at a slightly newer one, or consider selling the Note 2 half-way into the contract. I got the Galaxy S2 on a 2 year contract 2 years ago (the contract ended yesterday - I'm finally free!), but unlocked it and sold it about 14 months into the contract and bought the Note 2 outright. The Note 2 has a nice size, a better than average screen and commendable internal hardware.

Thank you! It is a 24 month contract, I was considering the nexus 5 but it is the same as my nexus 7 in design and software, so I will most likely go for the note 2. Or, I could wait till the end of my current contract and get a better phone cheaper on upgrade because at the moment I am paying £90 to cancel my current contract. Is it still worth getting the note 2 when it runs out in June?

It depends on the price of the Note 2 vs the Nexus 5. It seems to me that the Nexus 5 would be a better value upgrade than the Note 2, because it is much newer and overall the hardware is better (1080p screen, 2.3 Ghz Krait CPU etc). Over here in Australia, the price of a brand new Nexus 5 is about the same as a second hand Note 2 so if I had a choice of either phone now, I'd pick the Nexus 5 over the Note 2.
I really think the GN2 is worth it... As far as price goes it is definitely cheaper than any of the new handsets out... As far as screen goes it is very well off when it comes to quality, yes it isn't premier in comparison but any noticeable difference is subtle at most... As far as battery life one could easily argue that the GN2 is still the best... As far as firmware upgrades (if you decide to go custom) the GN2 is about as good as it gets... Already have a flashable 4.4 thanks to OmniRom (although not stable enough to use as a daily driver it is worth mentioning to show the speed of development with the device)... As far as speed goes... There really isn't anything better than the quad core functionality of the GN2. Even though some device offer octo-core processors they really don't use more than 4 at any one time and so speeds are barely noticeable at best... Ultimately the GN2, IMO was a head of its time and still has at least 2 years of fully reliable, upgradable usage left

Agree with everything that Phx said.
I'm one year in to my 2 year contract with the Note 2 and it's the first phone I've ever owned that I haven't been desperate to sell mid-contract.
It's very very fast, zero lag, great screen and fantastic battery life. 4.3 OTA update is due very soon with 4.4 already in development so you should have no worries about updates.
The Note 2 was way ahead of its time. The only thing it lacks compares to recent handsets is 1080p resolution, but on a phone screen the difference is barely noticeable.
Thank you guys, this has really helped, I have decided to wait until June and then get the GN2 then, i think it will probably be cheaper then anyway, also, what does IMO mean?
p.s I used my friends note 2 that he just got and it is very speedy and the screen looks very good. I am coming from a samsung galaxy ace, so anything would be better!

IMO = In My Opinion... I would also keep an eye out for Black Friday/Holiday sales (Xmas and New Years) as you might get a better deal during those time frames... Also check consistently as I was able to nab 3 Nexus 4s for 50 bucks a pop in March (online only) ---
---will add that though the Note 2 will always seem bulky to your peers... After 2 weeks you really grow accustomed to its size and will look at almost every other phone as tiny and hardly usable

Coming from a Galaxy Ace, the Note 2 would be a great upgrade. Personally, I've grown to prefer AOSP over Touchwiz - maybe that's why I'd prefer the Nexus 5 over the Note 2. But that's if I didn't have either phone right now; I love the Note 2 on AOSP-based firmware. It beats the Nexus 5 just with its expandable storage alone!
As you like aosp it is worth mentioning the note 2 had a good selection of custom roms, aosp, aokp, stock and hybrid. Omni rom had just released an (almost) stable kit kat 4.4 rom. Thus offering a lot of what the nexus 5 offers

I'm using RootBox v4.2 (as seen in my signature) and I love the flashy window animations and scroll effects. It's still based on 4.2.2 though - because 4.3 uses TRIM, it needs a full wipe so I haven't really been bothered to look for another ROM.
Do you know any 4.3/4.4 ROMs that have rather fancy animations?

Nexus 6 or Note 4 off topic

I know this is G Pro thread but one day all of us will get another phone. The G pro has been a awesome device. The best phone I have ever had. But I want a new one. So I want the Nexus 6 or Note 4. I am asking yall which one. Yalls advice would be appreciated. I am stuck on deciding both are good. I went into att and looked at both. The note 4 has all the bells and whistles. The nexus 6 is big I like. The Nexus will get all the updates first. The Note 4 will not which really does not matter since we root and flash our phones. I would love to hear yalls input on this thanks.

If I had to choose today between the nexus 6 and the note 4, I would take the Nate 4 due to:
1. Screen quality
2. Better battery life
3. Removable battery
4. SD
5. S-pen, adds some benefits

I'd rather get 1+1 if price is a problem. Nexus 6 and Note 4 aren't very smooth (some reviews said so). Maybe because the QHD screen. And if I want a new phone, I want it to have no lag at all.
Xperia Z3 Compact is very alluring, 801 with 720p. The battery is very good too. But the screen is smaller and that might become a problem for you. I'll definitely get this device if I can't get the 1+1.
If you want to wait though, device with snapdragon 810 is around the corner (february?). Rumor also said 1+2 will be coming soon.

love those features!
note 4 has physical button to wake, it's a plus unless you have the double tap to wake.
The external SD card is a nice feature on any phone. But no devices get supported in an official way like nexus devices, both vanilla Android from Google and the various roms from the developer community both end up supporting the devices real well.
That's one of the reasons why I am leaning towards the nexus 6 because of development and updates. But that note 4 does have some cool stuff. Someone mentioned the 1+1 when that phone came out I was all on it. Thinking this is great high specs cheap price. Then they pulled this invite crap. They lost me good luck still trying to get one.
I would suggest to wait till almost quarter of next year (2015). You would see some 64 bit devices coming to the smartphone market.
At present I don't think one should spent so much money on Nexus 6 or Note 4 or even Z3.
They are all 32 bit, probably you might not notice a drastic change in you experience moving to any of these device.
Wait for 64 bit chips Snapdragon 808 or 810, wait for 4k screens coming next year.
Waiting now shall prove fruitful for you.
For now I have sold my GPro and bought a used Nexus 5 device, pretty, doing this is pretty common here.
I did not go for a new expensive phone for all the reason I just gave.
How about a G Flex?

I liked that phone when it came out but was disappointed in the screen resolution. That phone is still just as expensive as the others.

IMHO I basically see no 'usable' difference between 720p and 1080p. But that is just my view.
Further a new G Flex is now available for around $300-350, while a note 4 will cost almost double of that, so you could save tons of money for sure

[Q] Buy now or wait until S6 release?

Hey all, have been looking hard at the Note 4 as replacement for my aging 4S. Looking to get away from ios, wouldn't be my first android device nor my first samsung. I would be buying the phone full price, no contract, and was wondering if I should buy now or wait till the S6 release and see if there is a price drop?
Thanks
Coop
Check slickdeals.net they have deals for note 4

Galaxy S6 release won't effect the price of the Galaxy Note 4...
Both are two different series in phone..
Now if you want Galaxy S6, it will b cheaper then Note 4
The price of the Galaxy S6 should b the retail price of the Galaxy S5 today... Note 4 stays the same...
3 months back I made the switch from iPhone 4S to Note 4 glad I did... all iPhones are the same
Note 4 has the removable battery and SD slot that the Galaxy S6 and iPhone don't have
In many ways the Galaxy S6 is a step back from Galaxy S5 I just like the look better and new figure print sensor but looks are not everything, it's features or what it includes also sells the phone... I won't b buying Galaxy S6 nor Note 5
Phones are personal preference, so goodluck! I can say I just recently read something about Best Buy having a good deal on Note 4 like $200 off retail price or something close but I didn't read to much into it, it may only have been for people who sign up on a contract...

Those Best Buy deals were for contract Note 4s.
I got my Note 4 a few weeks ago to replace an LG G3 my son decided to throw and destroy. I was going to wait for the S6...and I still think I'm going to get one...but the N4 is a fantastic phone and you can't go wrong with it if you like the size. I'm really happy w/ the Lollipop update except for the lock screen notifications (I wish it was like stock android still...doubt tap to open is a MUST) so I can definitely recommend it without reservation.
I just want the same camera (or better) in a smaller footprint. The camera is probably the most important aspect in a phone to me, so the S6 is really enticing since it's essentially the Note with a smaller form factor. Removeable battery and SD Card don't even move the needle for me, so that's not an issue.

I'm still on the 4.4.4 kitkat update... tho I do have the OTA of 5.0.1... but I don't like the notification pop up... so I'm staying where I am and 5.0.1 isn't much of a update rather wait for 5.1
But personally coming from a iPhone with out a removable battery and SD card really limits the phone.. space wise and battery
I guess depends on how much you update phones but personally, I update every 2 to 3 years an once the phone get to 1st year on a internal battery. It don't last as long and needs to b replaced. For this reaosn removable battery is nice just simply buy a new battery for like $12, all fixed... where on internal phone it's going to cost you $60 mayb more from a phone repair store... or if you do it your self it would b like $20 but a pain (talking from experience, just not simple)
SD card is nice just to add extra storage your right it don't move from my phone but it's having it what counts... Note 4 has 32gb plus 64gb sd card... no reason to need space but on 32gb my phone would b full... plus i bought 64gb card for $30
These are two reasons y I came to this phone and away from iPhones, my iPhone is still a great phone but needs a new battery so I put the money towards a new phone instead since I kno it will have same issue in time... plus memory was always a struggle phone always full, alot times went to take a pic just to see a pop saying not enough free space....
Plus the note 4 camera is great... It's very close to the one in Galaxy S6... not much difference...
As I said its all personal preference... it's what you want and how your going to use the phone...

note 5

Are u Happy or sad with direction they are taking the note line?
nope
No but I do like the design and the similarities with the S6 but the battery size stinks. I'll have to see how the battery lasts before I decide to buy one or not. The non removable battery and lack of externalSD are workable for me but a lame battery is not.
At this point like my computer i have to have at least a second drive. Being I have Note 4 DE and having failed SDcards I do have my stuff on my computer but the ease of backups and other items on my SDcard is huge for me especially when I change roms. Battery size is also important and right now this Note 4 has all I want.
Just makes me glad I have a Note 4! I like having a replaceable battery and I keep buying bigger and bigger SD cards.

No SD card is kind of a pain, but it's not the end of the world to me.
What I'm more interested in is finding out if Samsung will be releasing a developer edition!
I'm planning to keep my Note 4 DE til something cool comes along from another manufacturer. It's pretty obvious it will be my last Samsung phone. Also I have no contracts with Verizon now, as of this month. I'm going to check out the actual coverage of the other carriers. Of course if they really can't compare I'll stay with Verizon. Coverage is the only reason I signed up with them in the first place. I don't really mind if congestion slows them down some. I'm not going to put up with lost coverage.

I'm in the same boat. I would love to move to TMO but their coverage here is worst than "stinkie"...I mean like 2g is the best I can expect in my area.
I heard to compete with T-Mobile Verizon is did continuing the 2 year subsidiary plan contracts..... So without that I assume the Note 5 will be hella expensive.. Cause the only option would be to buy out right or V. edge type of installment plans

I am also sticking with my note 4 because I don't like anything about the note 5, I heard LG might be coming out with a note, is it true?
Note 5 is a joke! 3000mah battery, 32 or 64 gb only, no removable battery and no sd card slot. Not much worth the upgrade. I'm definitely waiting for the new LG Pro that will be better than the Note 5.

I came from the G4 and wasn't impressed with LG at all. The build quality stinks. I also had a S6 witch I liked a lot but prefer the display and size of the Note 4. If the battery on the Note 5 lasts like the S6 did for me I'll be OK with that. I has getting 2 to 3 days on one charge witch is fine for me.
You must be a very light user. Most people who are heavy users get about 6-7 hours tops on the GS6.

Yes, I'm a light user. My son has to charge his every day but it dose last him the day. It's definitely not for heavy users but at least it has wireless charging built in.
No way, no how, never, never, never
I never put my DE Note 4 on a charger. I go through up to four batteries a day. Just replace the battery and keep on rockin in the Free World . I sleep with the thing in my shirt pocket to get alarms. I am almost always online watching security Camaras, checking email banking alerts, tracking shipping using the hotspot or just using the thing for entertainment. I would go back to the Note 2 before I got a phone without a replaceable battery. I will never be tied down to a battery charger again. Don't even think about it.
I think the number 5 isn't a good number for Samsung. I think the Note 5 is going to go the same path as the S5. It isn't impressive enough to upgrade to from a Note 4. In fact, I think Samsung has taken several steps backwards, no SD, no replaceable battery, and smaller capacity battery. This is not a step forward in my opinion. I'm going to keep my Note 4 and look elsewhere if I need to. Sad...
