If any of you are having Lag, slowness, signal issues, bad battery life, etc. and/or other weird glitches after the lollipop update you need to factory reset your phone.
This is a know bug with updating from Kitkat to lollipop. It has happened on many devices, Nexus 5, nexus 7, Shield tablet, N910A etc.
Just factory reset your phone and re-set it up and most if not all of the problems will be gone.
From my brief understanding it has to do with some downloaded apps not switching from davlink to ART correctly during the OTA process. Facebook on my shield tablet was a notorious culprit.
Just an FYI hope it helps a few people out.

We did have one person factory reset to attempt to solve the "heart rate light turning on" bug, and it did not solve the problem.
Have you noticed this bug or used S Health yet?
One list I always go through is: update, update all apps, boot into recovery, wipe cache, and reboot twice. Works great and I know a bunch of others see similar results

Luckily I was already running ART prior to the update to 5.0.1, so I haven't seen any of these issues yet, and hope none crop up. :good:
Luckily I haven't had any of the glitches a few people have mentioned. However, my friend with an S5 needed to factory reset hers after being pushed the lollipop update and it smoothed everything out. Just like when flashing a ROM guys...starting fresh helps a lot.
Anytime there is a major change to an OS, whether it be on my PC/Mac or my phone, I always factory reset and start over. ALWAYS. Too many little bugs and quirks pop up in software upgrades for me to waste my time with that stuff. I'd always rather start fresh...plus then I can weed out the apps I don't use anymore.
As an old habit, I always do a system reset after a major upgrade. I did the same with this upgrade and it has been running pretty smooth for me.
I am now experiencing lag in a bunch of places, yet I did a factory reset.

I did this right here cause I noticed my battery was draining a good amount when the phone wasn't being used. After this and a full charge, the phone went back to how it was before.
I wiped cache and factory reset 3 times and I haven't experienced any of the aforementioned issues.

This is what I did. I had absolutely no issues with the update.
The minor issue is the quick note app pops up very slowly. But that is fairly minor, and not significantly different from kitkat.
factory reset
I rebooted a couple of times after the update, and wiped cache in recovery. Still experienced lag all over the place, especially w/ the dialer. I factory reset last night and it's been running more smoothly since.
Has anyone noticed that when booting into recovery, it says "installing system updates"? I even got a message, before the recovery screen popped up, that "no command found". After that popped up briefly, the phone went into recovery and all seemed fine.

Yup,
Dead Andy then into recovery. Weird...
This update to lollipop on the note 4 has been the best update experience that I've had on any phone. Love it. And yes, factory reset solved many issues that were honestly minor and I really didn't feel I had to, but I did bc I'm crazy. ..but it was worth it.
Back up phone via kies, I am impressed it worked great.

I'm going to try this again. I've already done it before but hopefully this will fix my problem.
On 4.4 I went 2 days with heavy usage. It was insane! I use my phone a ton at work for RDP, videos, and other IT related stuff. Now I can barely go 1 good full day.... Really hope this fixes it.
My update went well without any troubles, but now I am few weeks into using Lollipop and I definitely notice faster battery drain. I also have disappearing icons, just like others complained (Google Hangout and Phone icon disappeared).
I'm not experience a lot of major issues....but I did do a recovery reset....but I reinstalled via kies. I'm planning on doing a recovery flash again....but this time I'm not going to have it install the apps.

I'm not experiencing this I'm actually getting very good battery life. Don't know if you have disabled the system apps you don't use???
Also something I always used to do when I had the T-Mobile note 4 rooted of course, I always disabled Samsung push services it was always recommended. Don't know if it would make any difference but you can give it a shot.
I have all the apps I don't use disabled and it still hasn't been helping. I'm thinking about calling ATT and getting an exchange

Does it reboot or shut down?
It sort of sounds like a low battery shutdown. Maybe there is a problem with your battery. I'm just guessing here.
I have seen that happen from a couple of scenarios...
Not doing a wipe after going to DK28
Switching between roms and not wiping
Or flashing a rom or theme that you failed to verify the integrity of the zip before flashing.
I had this problem for a while and it seemed to get worse over time. I backed-up everything and wiped the cache and factory reset in CWM. Seems to have fixed the problem so far.

I'm going to take your approach to it and try that, hopefully it goes well for me, if not I'll just deal with it lol. Either way I have a functional phone. That vibrates and closes everything lol.
I will report that last night this happened on my walk home.
Phone kept rebooting over and over.
Phone was in my pocket and my hands were full so I could do nothing. Absolutely nothin would bring my device to life expect reinstall the rom. Even when I pushed my data backup I made while it boot looped on me, it would do the same.
So I had to start fresh. I have to say, previously I may have had a bad installation.
I went from 100 to 1 as to calibrate the battery once, no reboot yay. Also before, playing music while getting a text only muted the sound of incoming text for a plit second to where yu wouldn't know if not paying attention, sounds like a skip.
Now it decends volume while sounding the alert, and return music volume as normal.

After the ICS update on my non-rooted phone, the phone seems to be freezing
up and becoming unresponsive. After a while it looks like the radio "resets", all
the icons disappear in the top bar (signal, wifi, data) and it shows no service.
Then slowly one by one they all come back and I can use the phone again.
Sometimes I receive the "System is not responding" dialog box, but not always.
There is not one particular program it is doing this in, it can be something as
simple as pulling down the notification bar that will cause the freeze.
Any suggestions are appreciated, I couldn't find anyone else with the same issue.
Thanks.
Try:
Turn off phone
Take out SIM
Put SIM back
Turn on
I've had my phone act weird with respect to signal, wifi and data when this was the issue. Worth a shot, at the very least.

Thank you for the response.
Tried this and had the system is unresponsive issue right on reboot. If I do a
factory reset, does it reset to the current firmware or what was originally on the
phone (probably a really stupid question). I wonder if some other program isn't
ICS compatible and is doing something in the background. Doesn't look like

If you do a factory reset and it was the standard Kies legit update from Tmo, it won't downgrade your phone - will just re-install a fresh copy of your ICS. Did you do a restore of apps from your last version (gb?) with data? That could cause problems I would think..

Are you letting it sit for like 10 minutes during first boot after factory reset then reboot again before setting up. Its likely that some scripts are running from the initial installation and you need to let it rot until its done..
I did exactly that, thanks for the advice. Hoping that may fix the problem. I wiped the cache and factory reset, then let the phone sit for a good while before going through the play store and re-installing everything.
This issue just resurfaced again. The last 2 days I am getting the freezing, radio reboot and android process not responding.
No one else having this issue?
I think I'm in the same boat. I was stock GB, and just did the mini OTA update (which was great). A few days later ICS became available via Kies from T-Mobile, and I "upgraded".
Since the upgrade my phone is laggy, screen is significantly less responsive and also my battery life is less than before.
I have NOT done a factory reset of my phone yes (plan on doing that today), but even with that I have read that performance does not improve.
Ideally, I would love to return back to the stock tmobile gb firmware. However, even after literally 2 hours of reading I can't find the "how-to" and files I need.
I would appreciate any assistance.
t989 chip lags
ive notice this happen on my tmobile galaxy s2. i think it has to do with the Qualcomm chip on tmobiles stock roms.
When i had sprint i bought my girlfriend a galaxy s2 on the sprint network which runs the samsung exynos chip. She never complained about any lag or freezing whatsoever. I then left sprint because of their garbage network and joined tmobile.
bought 2 galaxy s2s and i noticed the lag almost immediately. The phone has random lag spikes as well as freezing and force closes. It had it on stock gingerbread and it has it on stock ICS too.
My girlfriend complains about freezing all the time so i decided to root her phone too. Right now im testing DarkSides v7 rom and if its pretty good in performance i will flash her phone with it too. So far it has been pretty snappy and everything works.

I was getting a ton of those random lock ups and crash to lock screen, disabling fingerprint reader made it stop but was wondering if there an alternate fix for this so I can enable the reader again?
What ROM are you running? Updated to OJ6 yet?
Have you removed Knox and ItsOn? They're not friendly with rooted devices. Have you applied this line to build.prop:
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 (save and reboot)
Or, did you enable aggressive desktop in Nova or equivalent launcher?
You could help the issue with factory reset. Sometimes, users get some relief with cache and dalvik-cache wipe, but not always. Backing up keep sakes to extSdCard and multiple wipes of everything but extSdCard and data format and flash ROM again have been recommended in extreme situations; it seems to be becoming the norm for clean install- not just for CM to TW conversion or update prep. You can also delete Android folder on extSdCard and install minimum apps to localize or add apps individually until localized or happiness found.
Sent from my SM-N910P using Tapatalk
I'm on stock everything OJ6, not even rooted or tooted.
OTA, KIES or Odin for update? Did you factory reset prior to update?
If you were rooted before, did you wipe everything except extSdCard and format data and power down, remove battery greater than 30 seconds prior to Odin or KIES? If you didn't, try a factory reset.
There were plenty of stock complaints about the fingerprint unlock in OG5. It's a shame if it's not fixed in OJ6.
Anyone rooted on OJ6 and using fingerprint unlock having problems?

Root it and 'tude it. I used the fingerprint unlock for a short period in OG5 with the settings above with no problem I can recall.
There's been some memory management improvement. Disappointing to hear update didn't fix stock.
I haven't made the jump to OJ6 but I'll do some more testing then.

It was an OTA update. I don't think the phone was ever rooted, I got it from EBay but it came in complete original packaging in pristine condition.
Since disabling fingerprint the phone is running sooo much better, all the random lag and crashes are completely gone and battery life is great. At 57% remaing with ~16 hours since charge and ~3 hours screen time of watching YouTube vidoes, browsing Reddit and playing Fallout Shelter.
I was so excited to get this phone and all that lag and crashing kind of made me question my decision but now I'm getting the performance I expected. I'm coming from a Note 2 so it is a pretty big increase in features and performance. Hopefully they sort that issue out with Marshmallow. From what I've read we should be expecting some time around February.

The 1st generation finger scanner was junk at release. I've tried it recently and surprisingly, it's actually improved.
Perhaps a good many of us that would have cared, gave up long ago on the scanner? You might do a little better with root to wake for finger scan but no guarantee.
Sounds like you're enjoying the phone without the scanner unlock. Most likely not the hardware other than a poor excuse for a copied feature and don't care attitude for the new bug in Android 5.1.1 OS they carried over from OG5 to OJ6. Samsung is still feeling their way through their slump, hopefully, they're learning from mistakes.
That's not bad battery stats. Did you factory reset it? I've seen phones coming from KitKat to Lollipop having two different type file systems in /data/app folder and dalvik cache folder. I think this would make a phone lag and get warm. It's the reason I recommend clean installs and factory resets, especially when updating Android sdk rev. I mention this because the random reboots seem off even for scanner.

I thought maybe it was the app causing this so I uninstalled and reinstalled it and the phone keeps rebooting. I recently purchased a replacement Anker battery and have been using it for a week now with no issues. Anyone have something similar like this happening? Rooted? Are you seeing a pop-up for the reboot (prompt)? Screenshots or logs?
How did you upgrade to marshmallow? What update are you on? What ROM are you running? Custom kernel? If rooted stock with custom kernel, have you fully removed ItsOn and Knox? Did you wipe or factory reset? Include your steps to get an idea of what is causing the reboot issue.
(If stock un-rooted, you may have some residual data from Lollipop. If rooted with custom kernel, you may have files from ItsOn or Knox causing issues. Basically, un-rooted and rooted have their own set of concerns. Need more info to offer suggestions.)

Not an answer but how many of these applications you mention are third party applications?
Typically, lock-screen is only available a few seconds and screen is forced off; deep sleep may eventually occur but you have only a small amount of control to prevent deep sleep; that's usually a good thing. These apps may not be remaining fully functional when conflict results in screen going off unexpectedly or deep sleep trying to save your battery kicks in.
Dunno what compatibility is expected with multiple apps active while trying to keep lock-screen on or wake frequently? My use of lock-screen apps is limited to my third party alarm. I'm happy that it wakes to alarm; I can snooze and allow screen to go off quickly and wake for snooze until I dismiss the alarm (without having to unlock screen). That's about all I'm familiar with lock-screen applications.
My only suggestion would be to try to limit the third party apps used in lock-screen mode to find the maximum compatibility. Dunno, if those are third party applications conflicting, it's just a guess.
Maybe one or more of these applications aren't fully compatible with marshmallow?
On the subject of waking phone being slow, I think it was reported by non rooted users that factory reset cured that for some users. It's possible that if phone wasn't factory reset coming to Marshmallow from Lollipop, that factory resetting now would help.

I need some help guys. I received the OTA update from Sprint with my stock firmware and it totally made my phone unusable. It keeps freezing and then rebooting. I have tried everything i can think of but nothing helps.
I did i full factory reset about 3 times. 2x with the zerolemon battery i was using for the last 2 years. Then another factory reset using the stock battery that came with the phone, which didn't get used more than about 5 recharge cycles before I replaced it with the zerolemon one.
After that I thought i could undo the patch but as you guys know the QI5 firmware is not backward compatible so am i kind of screwed? I have tried rooting and loading a custom rom, the CMDMOTO is the only one I tried since it seemed to work for others using the Qi5, but i still have the same issue.
I am a bit new to the rooting world but i have been reading up to figure out my problem, any suggestions? I have TWRP, super user and titanium backup.
Thanks

Installing the app 'Wake Lock' and using level 4 'PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK' seems to have made everything better. I will keep this thread updated if something else happens. I guess for some reason the last patch changed something that made the cpu go inactive or sleep much more frequently or something like that.
If anyone knows how to correct this let me know. It seems that this was actually a very common problem with the other variants of the note 4 it just took a while to get to this version. I wonder if anyone else was having this issue with the N910P.
Cheers
Have you tried booting to recovery and wiping the cache partition? If it falls asleep and freezes that points to a kernel issue if I'm not mistaken. Wiping cache will NOT delete any of your data. Hold Volume Up, Home, and power til the phone turns on and you see some yellow/blue/red text in the upper left corner then release. Try wiping cache and see if it helps

When I did the factory wipe from the 3rd time onward I always wiped the cache and all other options that were available. As long as i keep the wakelock app active the phone does not freeze up and/or shut down but it is draining my battery pretty fast. I am thinking it has something to do with the phone going to deep sleep and unable to come out of it properly. I am playing around with 'Kernel Auditor ' to see if i can find a setting that will fix this issue. I am almost convinced it has something to do with the cpu clock states and Deep sleep not working correctly anymore.
I personally am a fan of 3c Toolbox for most of my diagnostic needs. Theres a free version available, check under the cpu manager tab for whatever info is relevant to you. Example..it will tell you live cpu frequencies/load, live power usage, wakelocks, all sorts of goodies
Have you tried to ODIN a factory .tar image?
sammobile dot com has the QI5 image. Just make sure tou grab the sprint one and not the unknown carrier version.

Thank you so much for posting this work around! My Wife's Note 4 has been working great for over a year, she bought it used. Then a few weeks ago a bunch of updates were pushed to it and it just started to act up.
I narrowed it down to always occurring after the phone was idle for more then an hour or so and started to look for a clue if this may be a known issue so your work around makes a lot of sense.
It does appear to be an issue with Googles 6.0.1 OS version since my BlackBerry Key 1 also received a bunch of updates but its fine.
