Hi all,
I have an issue when trying to use wifi hotspot or USB tethering. I am able to connect to the G3 without any issues, but when I connect there is no Internet access on the device I connect with (the G3 still has Internet access when tethered). I have tested this with my laptop and also a different phone and neither device can access the Internet when tethered to the G3. I have also tested the sim card in another device, and confirmed that the sim is not the cause of the problem - the G3 is definitely the cause.
Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening, or how to fix it? I'd prefer not to root the phone.
Details:
LG G3 D855, 32 GB version.
Software: V20c-SEA
I am not rooted and I'm using the stock ROM.
I have just discovered that tethering will work on my phone when I disable 4G.
i.e. when I select "GSM/WCDMA auto" as my preferred network mode, tethering works.
when I select "GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto", tethering will not work (as described in first post).
Does anyone know why LTE would prevent tethering from working?
OK, so I finally managed to find a very simple solution to my own problem. I'll post here in case anyone else has the same problem.
In phone settings, go to:
Tethering & Networks --> Mobile Networks --> Access point names
Click on your relevant APN to get into the settings.
Edit "APN type" and delete it so it's empty (mine previously said "default").
Save the changes.
That's it! Tethering should work now.
That's fantastic dubcmj!!!
Worked perfectly for me too. So happy right now!
I got a Rogers G3 and had no internet access after connect to hotspot. The Rogers APN cannot be edited. So I created a new APN with just the name and ltemobile.apn, leave all other settings blank. Tethering works now.

Yep. Exact same problem.

Good thread. The above didn't solve for my issue but pointed me in the right direction. My network provider (OPTUS AUSTRALIA) had multiple APN's. Tethering with the default APN failed to allow internet access via wifi hotspot. I changed the APN to default using a different APN and reconnected my laptop and this now works. The alternative was to turn the phone off and on again which was driving me nuts. I hope this helps anyone else with the same issue.
Thanx.
Worked for me.
Thanks.
Great my LG-H831 G5 was also fixed by this so thanks.
I've got that settings with text message by my wireless career ... So I guess they are to blame for together with LG's crappy heavily customized roms

Thanks so much for this! I have a completely different cell phone (Samsung Galaxy S7 edge) with Vodafone NL and had the same issue.
My APN type was set to "default, supl, mms, xcap" by default, and deleting it so it's empty and saving the changes resolved the problem right away!

Running 2.3.3 Generic UK ROM, boot loader locked, not rooted, just completely stock!
As soon as I enable tethering (wifi or usb) the phone drops the data connection (H, 3G, etc. disappears from the notification bar) and my laptop says connected but no internet connection, as soon as I disable tethering the data connection comes back.
I have tried disabling and re-enabling data whilst tethered and it will flick up for a second then disappear again!
This is really annoying as I used to use tethering quite a bit with my X10 Mini!
Any idea's welcome!
Thanks!
After some googling it seems I'm not the only one with this problem, but no solutions yet...

also me the same problem
It's quite a big problem IMO, one of the major functions I want to be able to use and cant!!
i had exactly the same problem, sent the phone off to sony ericsson for repair, waiting for it to come back.... see what happens...
Oh, it works now very well. I just deleted the old wifi-network connections on the computer and now its flawless.
i am experiencing the same problem. I could tether nicely with my X10 and now with my newer and faster Arc, I can't share wifi, which is annoying when I'm out with my ipad and need a wifi connection
SE! we need a fix ASAP!
I've done some tethering with 3.0.1.A.0.145 and it worked flawlessly? Multiple devices at the same time, all of them had pretty smooth internet!
Lucky you!! lol
This problem still exists for me, I try again everynow and then and have only had it work once with a friends iPhone4 connected.
Does it help if you put ",dun" under APN settings>APN Type ?
If there is something already under APN type field just put a ",dun" next to it, save settings and try it by turning on Wifi hotspot.
Or if the field is empty just put there "default, dun" save setting and try.
Hope it helps.
My APN is default, supl and it works perfectly!

This worked for me!!!!
All you need to do is go to Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names
Select your active APN
Scroll down to "APN Type" and click on it
Add ",dun" to the APN Type of your active APN. eg APN Type = "default, supl, dun"
After editing this, you should be able to turn on the Portable Hotspot without the 3G mobile data connection dropping out.
Many thanks guys! I just added ",dun" to mine. Now tethering using this (Rogers) to write this reply!

Heavy Googling mate! lol
Been bugging me since I got the phone two months ago!
I upgraded to 2.3.3 on a Droid 2. I unlocked and rooted the phone but the Wifi no matter which program I use goes to the Verizon site which warns me that I have to pay twenty dollars a month. Has anyone fixed this yet or is there a URL I can go to to solve this issue? If not can someone provide me with a one click fix to go back to the Froyo, and an URL for that?
I have just started a T-Mobile contract in the UK on the Full Monty plan that gives unlimited data and includes tethering.
The handset used is unbranded and unlocked but I couldnt tether with it for some reason, either via wifi hotspot or USB Tether. The internet on the handset worked fine.
I couldnt call 150 customer service as that dept shut at 10pm so had a play with the apn's.
The three APN's set up as default are all locked and uneditable so my plan was to edit the broadband one in someway.
So, I copied all the settings, set up the APN's as another network, deleted them and added the three default APN's manually.
Once I did this, tethering started to work, with no actual change to any of the settings.
Just a heads up if anyone else comes across this and a fix that worked for me.
Steve
Yep rename apn to consumer broadband, people with many HTC s will known this, glad you figured it out

Yeah - I'd like easier steps too listed please - and thanks for sharing!
I made a mistake in my original post.
Seems that what was happening is that I was using the T-mobile Orange signal and not been able to tether. After messing with the APN's the phone went back to T-Mobile and so started to work. Nothing to do with the messing with the APN's
But, what does seem to work, is to re-create the APN's as they were, but on the first entry, change APN type from 'default, hipri' to 'default, hipri, dun'
That works on T-Mobile and when roaming onto Orange it seems
To do this, copy the info from all three APN's and then with the APN screen open, select menu and then 'reset to default'
This deletes the APN's and then gives you the choice of carrier to use. I used Virgin I think (doesnt matter which you use) but once the new APN(s) are there, just delete them. Then, menu and add APN.
Set up each of the APN's as they were before, except the above change (adding dun to the Apn type)

Smashing thanks. Tethering working fine now on T-Mo only, will try the solution you suggest for T-Mo/Orange when I get a chance. Much appreciated!
I don't have any problems tethering whilst on Orange on Android handsets. I'm not on Full Monty though, if that makes any difference. It is impossible to tether on an iPhone whilst on T-MobileOrange though. The hotspot option is just greyed out. As soon as you switch back to TMobile you get the option to switch it on again. Orange 3G is utter crap anyway. Unfortunately I pretty much roam onto it whether I like it or not at my new address.
as usual i'm stumbling at the first block...
'copy the info from all three APN's'...
when i click on any of them all the settings are greyed out, i wonder what i'm doing wrong?
edit:
sussed and working fine now
Just about to do this.
Out of curiosity what is the Broadband APN for??
Is it a tethering only APN? e.g. Now tethering is removed from NEW Full Monty contract connections (of which i have one) If i tether, thus using that APN, will they be able to see that and have a go.
Or now tethering is removed will that APN not work?

I reckon tethering will work…. but will get charged…. and its likely to be expensive.
Seems a strange decision on TMO's part TBH, as they share part of the backhaul with 3 UK you would think that they could cope with extra bandwidth needed.
I assume the broadband APN is for tethering but as I say, if used then it will be billed. Just cos the handset/set up can do it, doesnt meant it wont go past the billing systems.

Hi guys.I've wanted to ask is someone having problems with the internet sharing on the HTC 8S?
I have this phone almost a year and in the first few months it was working all fine but since then i can't manage to share the internet over it.
It is enabling like it should and all the devices are connecting to it without no problem, just can't go to the net.
Can someone give me an advice where could be the problem?
Thanks.

Tethering should only work if proper APN setup is done. If these setting are empty (as you said), then tethering cannot work. That is my experience, too. Check which APN you are subscribed to, or which APN does your operator use for internet access.
Unfortunately my operator currently does not have support for my HTC 8S for the APN's.I'm stuck with no setting's at this moment. All the fields are blank and everything is working just fine only no tethering. Can I somehow copy the setting's from my friends Galaxy S3 who has tethering option and it's on the same operator?

You only need to put APN name, usually "internet" is used for internet access.
Ok i think i fix it now.I will try later with my PC at home and see if it can connect too.I've tried with another android device and it has connected without a problem. The problem was in the apn parameters given from my Operator.I've found them on another site and it looks like these are the correct ones.Anyway thank you a lot for your efforts.
If i have any further problem's I'll post it again.
Take care.

Is it just me or does the tethering hot spot not working for ZenFone 550ml?
I can turn it one fine and ppl see my name but they just can't use the data from my phone
Same problem. Fine a suggested solution but not work for me.
Hi
I have the same problem.
Even I have factory reset my Zenfone 2, the personal hotspot still does not work just by one single reboot/restart without modifying any system file, personal backup data or apps update.
I found a person suggested on ASUS forum to disable the SIM2 and reboot. Per his claim, the personal hotspot works again.
I did pay a trial but my beloved zenfone 2 cellphone still rejects routing the mobile network connection for all connected wireless devices to my phone.
I have already reported to ASUS regarding this issue and I believe this is the firmware issue.
I remember that the same personal hotspot function worked before (maybe before 2 previous syustem updates).
If you find other solutions/suggestions, please post it here.

I have the same issue (latest WW firmware 2.15.40.13 - model 4GB/32GB/1.8Ghz).
Hotspot enabled, devices connect/authenticate but cannot access internet. The mobile data is working fine, as I can browse the web on the phone, but it does not route to devices connected via wifi hotspot.
interesting...
i guess we have to wait for the next update

It can be a hardware prob...Check with different carrier's sim card and check if tethering is working with that one... Try contacting your service provider and ask them for apn and settings for zenfone 2... If nothing works try replacing ur device under warranty
This used to work before I went to the . 13 firmware.
I presume the next release may fix this and break something else.
Would settle for a decent battery life at the moment. Tethering isn't a major issue as I have a contract mifi unit I can use. I also presume tethering would fry the battery even quicker so I'm happy to avoid at the moment.

If u really want to use tethering u can anytime flash that rom...And for the battery if u r rooted use Greenify and delete bloatware from phone...It helps a lot....And use power saver feature on this phone... Asus really needs to do sumthing about battery backup..

Had the same on my wife's P6. The connection would appear briefly, the call sometimes would go through but then connection lost and asked to switch off plane mode by the system. Tried 3 different sim cards, hard reset etc.
Filed a return and her new phone is working as it should now.
That sux, as mentioned an RMA may be needed...
Started happening to me when I updated to v37. It was fine until then. I'll probably flash the old radio image later on tonight.
Edit: nvm, the radio.img is the same between 36 and 37. It is odd that this just started happening in the last 24-48h.

I've read on the link i posted that a guy rma 3 time with the same issue ....
If someone figures out a fix, please let me know. I am getting desperate here.
Been eyeballing the device ...from LTE to No Service..back to H+ than picking up signal again rotating for about 4-10 mins
Now I'm testing out turning off adaptive connectivity under network and internet sitting inside my office now.
Fixed on my end.

Interesting. Did you contact T-Mobile or Google and asked about this?
This seems like the type of issue that should be easy to replicate.
I would suggest to contact Google either way, since your phone might have a hardware issue (partially defect antenna or whatever) and you need to sort this out, before you run out of warranty and get problems later down the road (fix not working anymore).

I started by turning off 2G. Worked for about 3 or so days. Then the issue came back. So, I turned off WiFi calling because I read somewhere that it was causing issues. I haven't had the problem since. It's only been a few days though. FYI I'm on Verizon.
I'm pretty sure it's yet another bug on the long list of them on this phone..
Go into settings > Network and internet > Sims click your provider there scroll down to Preferred network type change to LTE. I figured this out on my wife's phone. You'll loose 5g but it'll get you by temporarily until you figure out a better solution.
