How to block YouTube ads on Lollipop ? - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I really cant stand the YouTube ads. I used to be able to use YouTube adaway xposed module, but Xposed doesn't work with Lollipop...at least Samsung stock lollipop. How do you block YouTube ads on Lollipop?
Edit: If you are rooted and in 5.1.1 lollipop with TouchWiz, best way to get rid of YouTube ads is to use the YouTube Adaway xposed module.
Install xposed as instructed in this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/unofficial-xposed-samsung-lollipop-t3180960
Then install and activate the YouTube Adaway xposed module.

I use adfree...just checked and no ads on u tube

His question literally ended "on lollipop"
Sent using XDA Free mobile app

I'm on stock rooted LP and adfree does NOT stop youtube ads from playing. Also tried adaway and that doesn't work either. So it seems like we're stuck with the ads for now.

I've been working at this with Adaway white lists and redirects before lollipop came because of the Xposed delays and also had it unravel in lollipop. My problem was the webserver stopped; it needs to be enabled and running, you can check by opening the app and see if it's still on. I had uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail until I got the latest one and restored my data to it.
Can't guarantee this works for all ads or redirects because the setup is complex and not thoroughly tested. Also includes redirects that may not apply to everyone but it's friendly with Hulu, Spotify, Tapatalk and YouTube.
7 simple steps; steps 2 and 3 are optional.
1) Get this Adaway version or latest from xda, credit/thanks to the OP, @mrRobinson, if it works for you.
Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39144524
Download as of April 9, 2015:
https://https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95916177934553157
Note: because this app uses libraries, I don't recommend restoring this application fully with Titanium Backup. Always use the installer to install. Titanium Backup Pro is effective for restoring "data only".
2) I think browser url redirecting is also problem so I got this application by @julianjm. Follow the instructions for defaults.
Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49588372

3) Again, browsers may also redirect. Dolphin for Android includes default applications in advanced mode with an option for YouTube as default. Try it if you fail; no promises.
4) {New link in post 14} Finally, there are redirects that have to be added to Adaway. To make it easy, I've uploaded my Adaway list as export to import into your Adaway as your list to edit as needed. It also includes some white lists that allow hulu to play.
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23991606952599772 once downloaded, remove the .txt extension and it should import using Adaway/Your lists/Import lists.
5) {New link in post 14} You'll also need to direct the Adaway to servers to download the the lists for the host file. I've included a link and snapshot of the two that I currently use.
Tap the plus sign and add this line{http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/zero/} (don't include the braces.) Thanks to Dan Pollock at someonewhocares.org for sharing a short host source that's effective.
6) Now just download and build your host file and apply from main screen. Turn on the webserver. If it works as planned, your browser YouTube linked playback should redirect to your YouTube.apk, full screen in landscape mode; use the back arrow to return to previous browser location.
7) Don't forget to reboot as the last step.
This is an ongoing effort using other available sources; if it works for you, thank the appropriate sources. I'll update links within xda if available. There is room for improvement. Please share what works or what worked better fit you.

great will bookmark it for future referance it stopped working today back to adds any advice

Regarding post #10 of this thread, I've been working this Adaway export txt to be more friendly with general browsing and services without blocking vital services while maintaining privacy and annoying pop-ups.
Also tried to simplify process while adding security. You need Adaway and the txt file below plus the malware hosts site for updates. I actually uncheck all other hosts sites but the malware and use the export txt as the only other source. Why, because it's necessary to white list and edit hosts lists not to conflict with black lists.
adaway-export787.txt
Edit hosts source to add this source
Credit goes to hosts site: www.malwaredomainlist dot com
Opening Adaway occasionally will tell you when there's a malware update.
Just copy/paste the url in hosts sources using the + sign.
Please copy and share any url that gives any browsing issue. I particularly need Facebook users to test this as well as other external social media sites. I don't use many of those, myself. I usually give this a good test on vacation and tweak it accordingly.
Note: the import of txt list is rather long for sorting reasons. The build of hosts list is kind of long too. The webserver option in preferences should be enabled to allow the redirecting and white listing as well as block ads.
Enjoy.
Edit: for Chrome browser ads, suggest going into its settings and turn-off data saver and go-to Site settings/Storage and delete sites with excess data; could be ads stored to undermine ad blocking results. And don't forget to reboot to clear dns data; ads link there too. Also check your APN for proxies. I think the Note 4 is void of those but can't recall for sure.

Thank you so much for the very helpful tips!

I can't promise no ads but aim to reduce the annoying ones where possible.
I'm not sure where all the annoying ones are coming from or if Adaway is blocking access so help out with some url links. Recording dns requests is another method to self help. It's good to share those findings to keep this updated as well. Testers, feedback and input welcomed.

Sorry man, didn't realize you edited this post way back. Is your Adaway webserver enabled? The update may help; the original list was much smaller and also a bit crude, blocking some shopping ads.
I'm trying to make this a balanced experience to avoid having to disable frequently.

Hey man, thanks for all this! I followed all the steps, everything was downloaded and applied successfully on Adaway, but after reboot, I can't access things like Facebook and YouTube. Facebook says error loading news feed and won't load anything and Youtube won't open past the loading screen, . Even facebook on chrome browser doesn't load properly, it's just all text with no graphics or photos. I still have Internet access just things aren't working normally. Any ideas? Thanks so much!

Thanks for responding. I noticed this morning that I failed to save my last session. I knocked out for the night and didn't pick that up prior to uploading. It's unfinished regarding the browser getting to YouTube; my bad.
Regarding Facebook, can you please tell me the url in your browser when it's not loading? You can tap it then long press to copy paste it in a reply. I don't use it and I know a lot of Facebook urls get blocked. If you don't mind some testing, we could work this offline through PM if you like. I could give you some more links to export files to plug in. You need to clear data for Adaway in applications manager and import the new export files, set preferences and plug the malware host site back in.

Nope, nvm, wrong again sorry . It still isn't working. Youtube loads now but ads still come through. Could it be because of the recent Youtube update that came through today? Also I notice my webserver doesn't stay enabled on Adaway, maybe that has something to do with it as well? Here's the FB link that isnt working https://m.facebook.com/?hrc=1&refsrc=http://h.facebook.com/hr/r&_rdr
That link is with me logged in though, not sure if that's what you need.
Thanks for your help!

[HOW TO] Creating custom LOCAL homepage for stock web browser (updated)

Hi,
Here I show you how to create custom local homepage for the stock web browser.
So, basically, when you start the web browser, it will load this custom web page.
This is very useful, for example: You can create quick shortcuts for all your frequent visit of websites.
(1) Download the attached "bookmark.zip" and put it in the a folder, for example \Download
(2) Extract the content, for example in \Download\bookmark
After this second step, you can access \Download\bookmark\bookmark.html
(3) Open the stock web browser, go to:
Settings --> General --> Set homepage
(4) Choose "Other"
(5) Set to:
file:///sdcard/Download/bookmark/bookmark.html
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
There you go!
You can modify the bookmark.html as you pleased.
bookmark.zip has been updated.
Disable page zoom added:
Remove the "initial-scale=1" in the bookmark.html as shown here:
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, maximum-scale=1, user-scalable=0"/>
There is already a most visited sites option in the browser so I'm not too sure why I would want to do this?
Admittedly this isn't really needed, but is quite cool. I've just started learning html/css. So I will have a play with it later.
Sent from a phone that is not running ICS
Because this is the fastest way to get all your favorite websites!
Start the web browser and it is all there, right in front of you ... With all the thumbnails, ready to visit
There, two clicks you got the page.
Even better, when you go back by clicking the back button, you will see all those shortcuts again
Efficient ... Fast ...
And ... You can customize the way you want!
On the other hand, your way is too slow.
You need to start the browser, long click the back button, click the most visited, and you might need to scroll ...

Incorrect. There is a 'most visited sites' homepage you can assign in the settings. Plus if you want to talk about efficiency for certain sites why don't you just add a bookmark widget to the desktop?
i will try this.thank you
Right, you right about that most visited as homepage ...
But, the order can change at any time depending on your frequent visit. Also, I dont like the white background that consume more battery power.
With my way, I can have fixed loaction of thumbnails which for sure easier to navigate.
And because of that, we can have flexibility to arrange the thumbnails the way we want
Bookmark widget ... problem is that I must swipe to that home, and I dont like to clutter my launcher! Dont forget that widget consume more memory and might slow down your launcher if redraw is required!
So, still, my solution is better, faster, more flexible

Hi,
See the attached screenshot.

So, please please please ... if you are HTML/CSS expert ... help us!

Is this what you mean???
<table> width 100% does not work.
But, I found it ... We need to prevent "zoom" which can be done using this:
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1, maximum-scale=1, user-scalable=0"/>
bookmark.zip has been updated in the first post.

Updated, remove the "initial-scale=1" in the bookmark.html as shown here:

Yes Sir, I will do it now
Your username was about, lol, I will try to create a better registration form and such after buolding the api
Will you add a possibility to browse the supplied XAPs? That would be really awesome And you said you're building an API, I could help you with making a WP app so it's possible to browse and install directly from the phone in an easy way
Hope this goes well cause this could be a really good store. I see a lot of possibilities here

[App] WiFi Direct for Galaxy S

A few months ago, when I had to send a big video to a friend's phone and realized that Bluetooth really sucks, I found out about WiFi Direct.
I googled a lot, but could not find a way to get it to work on my phone, although the I9000 was officially called the "first phone certified with WiFi Direct".
As I'm interested in programming, I started to research what I could do to develop an app that could send files at similar speeds and finally found out WiFi Tethering could work in combination with a simple HTTP server.
I started to write on the app in my free time, got it nearly ready, but stopped working on it because it became quite busy at school.
In the meantime I had switched my phone, but in the holidays I picked up the project again, finished the app and published it on Google Play. It's available there since about two months and received an update recently.:laugh:
I want to share this app with you guys now. It's free and I hope you'll find it useful.
The app allows for speeds of up to 32 Mbit/s, which means e.g. 1 Gigabyte in just over 4 minutes (depending on devices)
Features:
✔ Up to 20x speed of bluetooth
✔ The receiver is device-independent
✔ No need for a common Wi-Fi connection
✔ No data usage for file transfers
✔ The receiver does not have to have the app installed
✔ Send single or multiple files
✔ Easy to setup: Use QR codes to allow the receiver to easily connect to the wifi and open the receiving URL
Play Store Link:

APK: http://bit.ly/FastFileTransfer
I hope you find this useful!

Hi FD_
in next CM10 nightly WiFi direct will be removed.
Is this thing will affect your app ?

No, this won't affect Fast File Transfer.
As mentioned, the app uses WiFi tethering (and not WiFi direct) and therefore will still offer fast file transfers.
So don't worry if the next CM10 does not have WiFi Direct, just use Fast File Transfer instead :laugh:
thank you very much, galaxy i9000 was first device with wifi direct but i had never use it, will try it tomorrow with friend of my. thank you one more time...
Is it possible to make out a way to receive files also... would be more useful then...
Btw the app is very good as now i can shut the mouth of my frnds who show off...
Edit : had to install app in frnds phone and all good in receiving too...
Is there any chance that in future versions, the step of opening the browser or QR code, no need to do it ?
I mean, I do not see the need to open the browser on your second device because the two devices are "connected".
The way that this now appears that the second device downloads the file and not the first device sends it.
I hope I have explained.
Sorry for my english
try the app and it seems working for me

You could send multiple files once and create a bookmark to the index page in the browser on the recipient device.
Maybe I'll implement a simple receiving part in the next version.

This is technically impossible without having an app installed on the recipient's device. Maybe the receiving part mentioned above will help you, but it will require the receiver to have the app installed, if he wants to benefit from the "fast receiving" function.
Thanks for all your praise :laugh:
Very nice and handy app. Thank you.
Very nice, thnk you.
Thanks for this!
sounds nice

[Q] Launch Youtube App By Default

I know this was asked before, I've looked at the threads. How about getting an answer this time? I'm going to give an example so you can understand my problem if you don't. If i'm in an app like Facebook and a friend posts a link to Youtube, a box come up that says complete action using with a few choices of apps to choose from, none of being the Youtube app. I've included an attachment of the screen shot. How do I get Youtube to appear on that list of complete action using? Is there a code? if there is a code, where do I put it? Is this the right code....Intent intent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri.parse("vnd.youtube://" + id);
startActivity(intent);
I don't know what may be wrong, maybe your borked something because mine works fine.

I believe it has to do with the link itself. A lot of times, even though it says you're going to youtube, the link facebook is actually using is a facebook link.
For instance, my wife is a teacher and chipotle was giving out free burritos to all teachers a week or two ago. The link she shared was supposed to be:
ra.chipotle.com/email/13-all-019/13-all-019.htm

The link that facebook actually gave out was:
http://www.facebook.com/l/uAQFNsXsG/ra.chipotle.com/email/13-all-019/13-all-019.htm

It should be easy to see that even though your friend links that crazy cat video directly to youtube, facebook will add their http://www.facebook.com/l/[gibberish]/ to the front of it. When your phone tries to open that link, it sees it as the browser would, to a website (facebook.com), not to youtube. That's why it only gives you browser options, not youtube options.
The problem with trying to set youtube to "see" those links is that this is how facebook links any page. Assuming you could add an intercept to "http://www.facebook.com/l/" to open in youtube (or at least include it in the open prompt), that'll mean all facebook links will have that prompting. That shouldn't be too much of an annoyance, though.
All that being said, I don't know how to add that "intercept" so that youtube is on the prompt. Maybe others can tell you which files to modify.
True...I interpreted it as him just saying that YouTube links would not come up with YouTube in the list
But if you wanted to change it and then choose yourself which links should be open in YouTube, you'd need to change the BroadcastReceiver in the AndroidManifest.xml of the YouTube app to receive all links

Interesting. I'm trying to look through that file on my computer, but my xml editors (read: notepad and notepad++) don't seem to like that file.
But from your explanation, I'm beginning to see that each individual app determines if it's involved in an action. I was hoping there was a mod or app that could "intercept" the requests and let you edit the list right then and there. I was thinking more like Window's "Open with..." command where you can choose any .exe to open a given file. But it appears that you have to modify the apk itself.
If you select the browser ie:dolphin it will then open up the box giving you the choice to select you tube. That is because the link was posted through the browser. If at the point you get to the box with the you tube choice you select it as default it should work from that point on unless you clear cache.

Yup, apps define what actions they wanna receive (scientific term is "Intents" )
And you decompiled the apk first, right?
If it's not specified in the manifest, I don't know of any other way to do it/force it

It seems like a dev could make an app that does just that, though. It could be called "Link Chooser" and it's manifest.xml would indicate that all links open in that program. It would then have it's own whitelist of installed apps and you could indicate which apps you want to open based on link type... I don't even think it'd have to have root access.
Ooohhh, if I had more expertise with android programming, I'd totally make that app and it'd sell like hotcakes on the Play store.

HOW TO Disable KNOX, OTA, and Bloat without ROOT

Download Samsung Android USB drivers here
http://developer.samsung.com/technical-doc/view.do?v=T000000117
Tool I used to identify the package - FX file browser
Folders I looked in to locate the packages/apps
\system\app
\system\priv-app
In these folders I looked at the the files and saw that they were ENABLED. After block command they were no longer ENABLED. I also saw active applications disappear from the Application manager.
DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU DAMANGE YOUR PHONE. THIS WORKED FOR ME AND IS CURRENTLY WORKING, BUT DOES NOT GURANTEE THAT IT WILL WORK FOR EVERYONE'S SETUP.
ATTEMPT THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
My PC is windows 7 pro.
1. PC: download and install Samsung Android USB Drivers
2. NOTE4 : go to developer settings and turn on usb debugging
3. PC/NOTE4: connect phone to PC and unlock (screen lock). Set to MTP for USB connection settings
4. download and install 15sec ADB/FASTBOOT
5. Open command prompt as administrator
6. type "ADB devices" enter
7. you should see response "List of devices attached" and next line with ID and device
8. If you see the device listed then copy and past the commands from the excel spread sheet. You can do this individually for confirmation or you can copy the whole column and let it do it's thing.
Every item on the spreadsheet I did on my phone and confirmed that it's off. I've been using it for couple of days and had no errors or force close of any apps.
Feel free to post your findings if you think others can be disabled.
duplicate thread.. mods please close.. thanks
But you can disable most bloat anyways without disabling. I'm confused as to what this is actually accomplishing.

Some apps you cannot disable from the phone. With this method you can disable those too, namely Knox and 'AT&T Software update'.
Nice work. I just rolled back from the newest update to the one that came with my phone. I had issues after my phone auto updated. Blocked everything you had listed on your spreadsheet. I'll follow up if anything is amiss. Thanks again OP.
Did anyone try this on a Note Edge?

if you're using fx file explorer, you'll see "ENABLED" in green by the bottom when you go to info of the APK or package before BLOCKING.
after blocking the package, go back in to info and you'll see the "ENABLED" gone.
to test, you can take the app Evernote. disable the package and you'll see the app dissapear from the app drawer, and when you unblock it it'll come back.

to elaborate, and using evernote as the example, take a look at these two screenshots. if you are confused, they will help clear things up.
in FX explorer, long press on the package name for the app you want to inquire about, in this case we want to inquire about evernote, so in the system/app folder find the evernote apk, Evernote_ATT.apk in this case. long press on it and press "details" you should see a screen like:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
now when you run the adb command to block, you should see something like:
this particular case, as insang-droid mentioned, you can check the app drawer, but not in all cases does the app show in the app drawer, so use this method to check in those instances.

smart select
Works great definitely seeing an improvement.
One problem tho, i followed OPs app list and disabled them successfully but now my smart select action isnt working properly. Im guessing one of the packages handles it butbim unable to pinpoint it. Still checking packages but im not so hot at this. Any ideas would help!

Hmm. Thanks for the reply.
I just went over the batch file op provided and i dont see that service in there so i dont believe i blocked it. I also checked the list of services added on the excel spreadsheet and its not on there as well so im assuming another service is disrupting it

Thanks.. I work in architecture.. I'm frequently writing all over plans.. part of the reason I got this phone. Thinking I could do minor markups if the situation arises.. and when we take pics for field surveys.. I can now make notes or other markups on the pics so when I am back in the office 2 weeks later I know why I took a specific picture for example.
