Is there a non-Kodi music library app? - Fire TV Themes and Apps

I have an unrooted AFTV and am looking for a media player that can see my Network Attached Storage, index it and show it to me in a library style format. I'm aware the Kodi can do this but was wondering if there is something a little more light weight ...an app designed specifically as a music library would be ideal.

There are a lot of media players out there that do what you need, but I suggest Wondershare Player. It can find all media on your server, and in my opinion is the best media player for android. One big thing it does is let you save the streaming url of network streams, which is an awesome feature. I keep a playercorefactory.xml with Wondershare as the default player so if I need a stream url I just move it to my SPMC data folder, click on the stream inside SPMC/Kodi, it plays on Wondershare and give me the option to see and keep the stream url. Now I can just delete the Playercorefactory.xml til I need it again. Plus it even has a browser.

Brilliant - thanks for the reply. Just to confirm the app in the link below is the one you're talking about? and that it can index all music like xbmc would?

BubbleUPNP should be able to find your NAS etc.. then you can select which app you want to use for example to play your music.

Cheers patt2k. I looked at bubble upnp and really like it but there was a limit the size of playlist I can create using the free version. Because my ftv isn't rooted, I don't think I can install the purchased version and get it to validate with the play store. Do you know of a way to do this?

http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-sideload-apps-onto-an-amazon-fire-tv-or-fire-tv-stick-using-an-android-phone-or-tablet/[/
I would think if the free version works so would paid, but be aware they will show under settings/manage apps. If you can't upgrade within aftv you should be able to do it on pc or android then sideload. Can someone verify this?

It depends how the app validates license.. for example for my nova prime I just extracted both nova launcher and prime.
You have to give it a shot.. buy it on playstore or use your resources to get it ,extract/download apk whatever your way of getting things is,sideloaded it and see what happens,.

Now it's mighty strange that it will not work like a charm on your mobile device, by the way, the YOUTUBE player is for pocketPC devices ONLY, it tells you that in the thread.............!
I cant find a place where I can download rtsp player. The one I download is just a play.dmg.

Still No Skydrive Official Music Support?

Theres already cloud storage for music on ios and theres google music already but theres still no official skydrive music or whatever from microsoft what gives here? are they going to do anything cloud storage related for music with wp7:
Great
You just gave me idea for a new app, thanks... I just hope I will have some free time to code it, currently I'm developing another app "use your phone as a hidden camera", to be published this weekend

Try Anemoplayer. Its more proof of concept at this point but once the developer implements playlists and background support you'll be streaming on the go

Hey, sound like good idea to me, haha.
Should be able to shut the screen off , and still able to take the picture *sliently* haha.
Alright, back to the main point.
Skydrive allow you to have 2GB Free... would be nice to have music up there but i mean like, is it really necessary? because i never filled my 16GB with Apps and Music.
This is puzzling. Zune is by far the best streaming service of all three OSes. You can listen to anything. iOS is limited to what you have in your collection. Google Music is the stupidest thing on Earth - why would anyone want to upload their own stuff and then stream it from there? Why would anyone choose that over Zune Pass?

Yeah, that's true. I'm using it here but I agree, it's not easy and most people wouldn't do it.
Still uploading your own stuff to the cloud and listening from there sounds weird to me. The value in Zune Pass isn't the fact that stuff is streamed, and that's the only thing that is similar in Google Music.

I agree, Zune pass is the best of the three services. Although you have to pay for it.
On a side note, has anyone set up a Windows Home Server? I downloaded an app to connect to my server and now I can stream my personal music collection directly off of it. Zune Pass + personal collection on Home Server = endless music.
I have a Windows Home Server at home and that's where I store stuff including music. But I don't stream it from there though. The main problem with streaming is battery drain. It's much more practical to just copy music to the phone. If it had more generous storage I would have to do it just once.

App for Streaming Video

I have looked around, and can't find any information in threads that are not at least a year old. I use airplayit on my ipad to stream videos stored on my desktop to the tablet and it works fairly well. However, their android app crashes on my phone when I try to add a computer for it to stream from. I also tried an app called skifta from the play store, however it crashes when I open it. I am trying to find, Ideally, one program that will work for both my ipad and my phone, but if that is not possible, just a good one for my phone would suffice.
Any ideas?
I like BS player. It has a LAN mode that you can use to stream media. It so far Plays all of my .mkv files without stutters.
I use Plex media server

This seems to be exactly what I was looking for. 5 bucks is the most I've paid for an android app, but I just might have to do it.
I for one would love to see Google do for video files what they did for music (Google Play Music). Streaming videos via your pc to phone while on the same network is a nice feature but having it in the cloud would be a plus.
I use bs player as a player, but have set up an ftp server on my home pc and navigate to it through es file explorer.

Okay in the process of trying to find an app that could stream video files as well as music & document files I came across an app called ZumoCast. This app is specifically made to run on certain Motorola devices but doing some searches here on XDA I found a patched version, installed it on my phone and thus far it works flawlessly (well almost), no widget support & album art doesn't always show up.
I haven't tried it while I'm away from home so I can't really tell you how well things would stream outside the network but in house it works great.
Attached you will find the apk & here is the link to the windows install file (sorry iOS users no support for you guys at this time)
Enjoy

Network Media Player

Does anyone know of an app that will play media from a network share? Ive tried Diceplayer and it doesnt seem to support mkvs... If I can find an app that will stream media off my local shares, this will finally be my "one box to rule them all" as it supports all the services Im interested in, I just want to be able to stream my local media. I DONT want to use Plex or XBMC.. I have a Plex server running and it runs great however I have a catch all folder where downloaded stuff goes before I move it into whatever directory its going to live in and thats the content I want to be able to play.
Anyone got any suggestions?

Try archos media player. I haven't tried it yet but it supports SMB. If you come across anything better, let me know
Well, its not an all in one solution, but...
Install VLC for Android and ES file explorer.
In ES file explorer when you try and open an MKV it will ask what app you want to use. tell it VLC and you are in.
The bad news is that the beta of VLC does not appear to support any controls on the Fire remote. It will take
"mouse" command from the cheap MCE remote that people are using as an InfraRed receiver.
Is there a reason XBMC is out? It can be setup to just show your movies and shows without doing any scraping or anything other then just letting you get to your network shares and play it.
I haven't had the greatest luck with XBMC. Ive set it up on numerous devices and its probably that I just end up getting frustrated with it. I ran it naively back in my original Xbox but now I just cant seem to get a handle on seeing it up to my liking. Plex has been great but I don't think my server has enough Wheaties to handle maybe more than 2 streams which is why I've been looking for something to just stream content across the network.

You should try Vimu Player. You won't even have to sideload it is in the fire tv store.
I haven't tried it on the fire tv but I used to use it a lot on my Logitech Revue Google Tv. It doesn't have all the features of xbmc or plex but it did a great job streaming video from my NAS.

Ill give it a shot. I have Plex set up and it works great for me. But I have kids and they want to stream stuff too and Im concerned that my media server isnt going to have the Wheaties to stream that much stuff so the option of being able to play directly from the share is what Im after. My Plex server is an Athlon Phenom II X3 with 16GB of RAM.. really doesnt do anything but run Plex, SabNZB and PlayOn..
Thanks for the heads up!
I use MX Player and Skifta on my android devices to access my DLNA server. So you can give MX Player a try it handles mkvs perfectly fine.
Vimu looks like it has a lot of potential but sadly most of my MKV files dont have sound and I cant really find any settings to change for that. Im going to give MX Player a shot now.. I dont know if thats DLNA only but if it is, thats not what Im looking for. I just want to be able to stream without transcoding on the server side.
MX Player isn't DLNA only it can handle other network streams just fine as long as you know what they are.
DLNA is just happens to be how I push my media files around the house to my devices.
Yea.. I looked at it and couldnt find a way to browse to shares... Im using a Mede8r for playing from network shares right now.. Im so close to being able to ditch everything except the FireTV.. if I could find a good network player that just plays, I could get rid of all my other boxes. I really want the "one box to rule them all" thing......

I had issues with ES working with the Amazon remote. Are you using an external keyboard/mouse to control it?
Personally I do not have a Fire TV. Just trying to help out is all.
A keyboard and mouse should work fine. Even an air mouse should be ok as well if you want to go that route.
I'm really surprised that Qloud Media doesn't get more attention. You install it as a server on either Windows or Mac, point it at your media and that's it.
Run the client on Android, iOS or Windows devices, plug in the server PIN and you're off. Done and done.
The video is transcoded on the fly, so streaming over the internet results in a lower-quality image at times, but it's certainly watchable.
The GUI isn't fancy, but quite functional. The server end has almost no bells and whistles. You could think of it as Plex-ultra-lite, so there's no overhead processing going on. The server exists only to serve media and that's all. No indexing of your collection, no downloading cover images, etc. It just streams media from whatever source you choose and I haven't had any problems streaming anything in my collection, even .mkv files encoded with AC3 audio that the Chromecast won't touch.
I just loaded the client up to my new FTV last night and again, it works perfectly.
The only minor drawback is that the aspect ratio is a bit weird when viewed on the FTV. It's not perfectly 16:9 but more like 15:9, so the image is a bit squished in from the sides. You don't really notice it after a few minutes though.
Im surprised it's 6 months later and there is still no easy way of playin network shared files, say from a NAS device with a media server, on a Fire TV without having to sideload an app. If I'm wrong please correct me. I did try ViMu but it couldn't play any of my files (mostly MP4s) - everyone said it was unable to play. Currently I use an XBox 360 to browse/watch videos, which I have fairly organized into folders. Why is this so difficult? My Sony TV has a player but it doesn't support folders so its hundreds of videos just in alphabetical order by filename which isn't ideal- plus you can only read the first few characters of the file name without looking at a detailed view so no way to tell what specific file you're looking at if they all start with the same word.
Yes I tried XMBC but it's way overkill, I don't need or want custom artwork per file, it crashes, and it's also not something I can put in the regular fite tv menu. Also XMBC doesn't play 720p content full screen for some reason.
Has anyone had better luck?
Edit ---------------------------
Well after some more trial and error I ended up using Llama to auto start XBMC in place of some other random app so I basically have XMBC on my main Fire TV screen. I also deleted all XBMC data and didn't run any file scrapers this time, and only access files via the Windows Network Share, so it is a much cleaner looking interface like I wanted. Finally the screen size issue was actually the entire Fire TV screen size which I had to enlarge in the Fire TV Display settings. Even maxed out it doesn't 100% fill the screen but it's much closer, I can live with it. Although I didn't bring it up I was also having an issue with the time display I was blaming on XMBC but was again the Fire TV itself was set to Pacific time- you'd think Amazon would have set the timezone right.
Anyway I feel it's much than it was earlier- still occasional crashes on XBMC but not too bad. Just wish I didn't was a few dollars downloading paid apps that didn't work as I thought they were supposed to.
If XBMC is crashing, consider trying SPMC (fork of XBMC). Its available in the Amazon app store (but for the Stick it must be side loaded).
I'm using it on my FTV Stick, and its been solid. No crashes or hangs.
Does anyone know why my MX Player stop playing on my one box it's saying cannot play link it's on my firestick on TV

[q] Network audio player?

Hello there, besides Neutron, is there any other player that supports playing folders from local network. Ok, so I've installed the app but it doesn't play my mp3/flac files from an shared folder trough my network. From what I see , I have to install an Bubble upnp server on my laptop then the Bubble upnp app would acces that server and play the files.
I'm not looking for that. I just want a player that can play files in shared folders on my network, no additional servers or stuff like that. Only Neutron can do that?!?! In Android OS , I'm kinda shocked, because when I had the IPAD I've had like 3-4 apps that can do that.

Out of curiosity if you have Neutron why are you looking for something else? A while ago I ran onto this hassle and ended up buying Neutron because it can play from multiple sources (network shares, streamed URL and mSD storage) it also has superior audio compared to Power Amp. Neutron's UI needs a modern refresh but functionality is good. I have also purchased and set up Plex app including its server. It's app is beautiful but it's lack of Playlist ability and how it groups audio files makes it a video server choice rather than audio. I do not use Plex anymore as I ended up implementing my own solution.
In the end I wrote a python script that takes my m3u playlists from my desktop/server and converts them to urls listed in a rss file and make the music directory and modified m3u rss file accessible from my local lan's web server. I'll usually use Server Steam (playstore) to stream the m3u file launched through Simple RSS widget (playstore) which shows a scrollable list of m3u urls.
Sometimes to get exactly what you want you need to roll your own.

Is the Neutron UI that is holding me down and the fact that on a open source OS like Android I don't have at lest 3 applications to choose from, I think that is what is bothering me ). Thank you all for your answers!
Until I will find something new I will stick with Neutron.
Windows has its own upnp server built in. No need to install anything. Just open media player then add whatever you want to share to the library, be that a single file or a whole folder or drive.
It will then be available on the network for any upnp or dlna device or software.
Most file managers will let you play music files. ES File Explorer has its own media player built in.

Maybe I'm ignorant of the term "Network Player". I know if I use ES go to Network then access my NAS's music folder I can play my MP3s. I have the option when I tap one to use any of the installed apps to play it. That's not a network player?

No you're correct, I stand corrected. Don't really use es explorer, so wasn't aware of it.
I use ArmAmp (for local & network). It has way better UI than Neutron, and more features / customizability than ES File Explorer's player.
