Just wondering - there seems to be across various threads hints at reasons not too, such as iffy GPS & battery performance hit.
Anything I should be aware of before I try ( just made a Goldard )
If you screw up the Apps2SD installation, you can kiss your USB functionality goodbye. It's less concerning because it's affecting very few people, but it's more concerning because nobody really knows why it happens in the first place. They're still working on possible fixes.
I've experienced better battery life, myself.

I came on the forum for a look around about 45 minutes ago, ever since I have been reading and reporting threads (as per recent mod request) that shouldn't exist in the first place.
Please search, read, learn instead, far more fruitful and doesn't damage the forum usability for everyone else.

It's not that easy to search and find the older threads because few people tag their threads. In this case he did fine the threads but perhaps he wants to know in the context of THIS phone? Also, this thingy evolves very fast so an updated info is probably warranted.
Sorry j-zeus if I was a little over zealous there. This was about the fifth thread I had come across. I'm sure you can appreciate the irony of stating in your OP that you had found other threads on the subject but that you had decided to start a new one anyway.
Anyway, I didn't mean to be rude or combative, I just wanted to point you in the right direction for future posts. It really does make life easier if the forum is well organized without multiple threads on the same subject.

One reason NOT to root now that I could think of:
Google IO is only few weeks from now (May 19-20), there they will most probably announce Froyo, Android 2.2.
It would be wise to wait what will come out.
APP2SD will be native if they include it in 2.2 (I [email protected]!).

No worries - I do know how to search and did. I find it somewhat over the top as it throws up 28 thousand snippets of information that you have to trawl through only to find it's out of date already - and for a non techie like me this leads to masses of confusion. I post the question to get the latest feedback, not stuff from 2 months ago ( also as posted it helps others too ).
1 reason is: it wipes your phone and you get a random other rom, which might have stuff missing you are used to.
sense for example is missing for sure.
This is the kind of thread where my sig really makes a lot of sense...

I agree the search facility is not the best on this forum and after searching for a few hours its easier to give up as i have normally lost the will to live by then.
and it's funny that there's an exact same thread right below this one.

Sense is only missing if you... pick a ROM that's missing Sense. That's a very silly and misleading thing to say.
The default rootedupdate.zip that's provided with the unlocking method is just the stock ROM with root; it still has Sense. Half the ROMs on XDA for the Desire still have Sense. Saying you lose Sense when you get root is just flat-out false.

Although this is now going off topic can I say I agree the search on here is ****. Plus, if people keep having a go at people for starting new threads then you will probably finds this will stop people from posting what might be valuable info for fear of being rebuked.

Thats not on really, I did try the search before I added my post and I was easily able to find threads relating to this topic which is where this question should have been posted. Even the OP acknowledges the existence of other threads in the.. er... OP.
I added a note to the J-Zeus in case he/she felt my response was over zealous as upon re-reading it it does sound a little sarcastic and he/she has responded amicably. The thread has been moved since my post.
I have been using this forum ever since I got involved in hacking my XDAII (new account since then as lost my details) and the desire section is the messiest I've seen, I guess because this is the first iPhone killing android phone and has proven to be unbelievably popular. I was only trying to ensure this forum remains usable, ordered and collaborative.
What I said was in line with the forum rules, your response isn't.

But once you are in a thread, at the top of the OP there is the option to 'search this thread' which may help out in some searches as it is, of course, limited to the current thread only.
In any given forum section, in the same position, there is the option to 'search this forum'

By no means guaranteed but hopefully! I am sure they will make it exclucive to the N1 for a while. Even if there is no official update I rather suspect it'll find it's way onto the device through the Devs here and else where.

IMO that would be very strage if Desire wont get Froyo and would be dated after two months.
But I have seen Google Nexus One with Desire's OS, which means we will be able to put Nexus One's or Magic's Froyo if it wont be offered officialy ?
Got a message about a new firmware update, 25 Nov. Is this the same update that was pushed out at the beginning of the month?

Well, not to be mean, but I am quite aware that an OTA update had been discussed earlier in the month, as I said in the op. But, I hadn't seen anything lately, and that's why I asked if this was the same one. Obviously I knew there had been one earlier.
I have probably read all the posts in this forum. I know how to use the search, and I study all available resources before I ask a question. I do research for a living. So please don't be so quick to assume a poster is lazy.
I do cleanup work on other boards to try to provide correction to people who are too lazy to look for the answers, and I deal with them every day at work. So I'm more than a bit sensitive on this issue.

So, speaking of OTA updates, when Froyo finally is released for the Slide, will having a rooted phone prevent the update? Will we all need to return to unrooted stock?
Me, I'm going to wait until folks who know what they are doing have a chance to dig into the ROM and make it better.

Technically, yes, that is what you'd have to do, at least I'm fairly sure, but I'm sure someone, probably chiefzreloaded, will release the rooted version of it fairly quickly. I'll just wait for that, rather than spend time doing it myself.

I hope this hasn't been asked before...but why when a ROM chef releases an update to his ROM doesn't he start a new thread?
Some threads get to insane lengths. If the new version of a ROM is bringing problems over from the old, could the chef simply list them in the OP or one of the immediately proceeding ones?
I'd think it'd make following the progress and problems of a new ROM much easier if one doesn't have to slog through two or three hundred pages to figure out whether he or she wants to try it or not.

This is a decision for the developer themself. I take a new thread for minor updates (1.7 to 1.8) but not sub-releases like 1.7.1 and 1.7.2.

While I understand your reasoning, I have to say if you have to read through a couple of hundred pages to decide if you want to try a rom or not then the answer is maybe not. I'd rather see a thread that is 10,000 posts long, I only go to the last 4 or 5 pages to see if the newest is worth trying, than to see each sub-forum have 10,000 threads. At least if you want to go back and see if a different version is worth trying it's all in the same thread.
Each to his own I guess.
I'm not a ROM "chef", but have had software releases on XDA, and why I understand your question and agree somewhat, as the dev in charge of threads I'd much rather have 1 thread for 1 app, rather than a thread for each version. That way I only have to visit 1 thread to look for requests/bug reports (THERE ARE NEVER ANY!!! lol)/suggestions etc..
If I had a thread for each version of a piece of software then I would lose track of older versions, just because of the amount of work it would take to keep an eye on them all.
That's obviously just my opinion. Like I said, I see why you suggest this, but I know I wouldn't want to do it, for the benefit of users as well as myself.
I also want to let you guys know that I personally flash these ROMS before posting them to make sure they are safe. With that being said, you flash them at your own risk...

OK, lets try this again I deleted the other thread because I didnt want it to be a source of drama for us NS4G owners. Everyone seems to get along here, so far lol. I will build whats in the repo, the chances of things being broken are pretty high. I was fixing things in the previous builds, I wont be doing that this time, these will be straight off the CM git. So, with that here is todays build...only thing Ive found wrong with this is the 4g toggle, of course...

I would like to see this thread locked, BUT keep the OP updated daily/whenever you update. There is no reason to discuss bugs or things since this is an unofficial build that will change nightly. This thread should just be info and the download imho

I disagree, keep it open. Not so much a place to discuss the bugs as it is just to post them so people now what to expect. If a build doesnt boot, etc, I would rather someone else find that out and post it. That way 20 people dont have to boot to a very broken or non functional build.
Not to mention every single CM device has a "kang" build thread, that is also left unlocked.

I would have no problem with that. I dont think I can edit the OP if its locked though. And there wont necessarily be a build every day. Just under these circumstances, i.e. no build for 4 or 5 days and tons of new commits. Not saying its a common occurance, but it is known to happen.

I myself would like to see it stay open. Mikey has done alot for NS4G users and takes time to help others figure out when the help is needed. Whats it going to hurt having this thread, for the users who relate. It's just my opinion as well.

I didn't really think of the not booting / lots of issues / things like that. I know mikey just mentioned something about keeping drama down and I thought it might have been a good idea. Obviously 2 sides to every thought process though. Its one of the reasons I love this forum
Seriously, this is the best section I've seen here at xda. I want it to stay that way. The reason I closed the other thread is because there was concern these builds and this thread would cause issues for nemith in the "official" thread. I don't think that will be the case and ask that everyone do their part to make sure we keep them seperate. Thanks so much guys

Any reports on the recent vzw ota? I have refused to take it because my phone is working well, but I also don't want to lose the ability to update later if 5.1, or M become available at some point. I'm not seeing any threads regarding it, so I was kinda looking for peoples feedback good or bad.

Look in the VZW forums that are specific to that model. Here's the thread talking about 24B:

That should hopefully answer any questions you might have and if you others concerning it, that would be the best place to ask since most VZW people post in those forums. I myself peruse these forums because there still can be good diamonds found for the VS985 G3 in the "all other variants" G3 forums, but I mainly hang out in the VS985 forums for the G3 since the latest info specific to that phone will be found there first more than likely.
