Mobile data speeds slow on stock - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've just picked up one of these fine handsets and so far am liking it a lot. One of my main bugs however is my data speed on stock/stock varient rom.
I'm on three uk. On my old phone, HTC One m7 i used to get up to 28mb on 3g. On this phone i only get just over 10mb on stock. I switched to cm12 to check it out today and got my old 28mb again.
The old build.prop tweaks seem to make no difference.
Anyone got any hints or ideas? Thanks.

28 Megabytes per second?! I would be able to help if I averaged more than 1 Mbps...
The lack of competition and innovation in internet providers in the US is killing me. Sorry man, I just had to inquire about how fast that was.

Hey yeh 28Mbps. The network I'm on offers a "Superfast" 3G connection. It's a DC-HSDPA, Advanced connection. Or something like that anyway. For some reason with the G3 though I'm only hitting maybe 15Mbps down maximum, which is good but not good enough lol.

[Q] Problem with connectivity speed

I apologise if this has come up before. However, and I don't understand why, my HTC DEsire was running perfectly about 2 weeks ago. But for some reason after I installed the iNSertCoin ROM my internet speed and market download speed is INSANELY slow. My phone says that I've got a 4 bar HSDPA connection so this really shouldn't be occuring. I've reverted back to the GingerVillain ROM (the rom I used before iNsertCoin) and it's still a problem.
I've tried many different Radios with the correct RIL's and nothing seems to work. It works fine with wifi (don't know why that would help but meh )
Help would be much appreciated guys. THanks.
Is anybody there?!
Come on guys. Someone help lol
You do realise that using something like HSDPA or 3G connects maybe miles away. It also depends on how much connection your carrier is giving out. Just use Wi-Fi or something but using something like HSDPA isn't always guaranteed to be 100% fast at ALL times.
Check at your carrier if you have any kind of maximum bandwith use. Maybe after like 200MB data transfer your account gets limited speeds. Fair use policy or something. Maybe that's why your speeds are so slow.
My plan is Unlimited Internet and I'm 100% sure I don't use so much that I exceed the fair-use policy. And my point is that 2 weeks ago it was perfectly fine. The speed was fine and I haven't moved house or anything. Just seems very odd that it would drop so much. For example, it takes me A VERY LONG time to download an app now. Before, this wasn't the case.

Underwhelmed by the Sprint Samsung E4GT (SPH-D710)

The firmware on my wife's SPH-D710 was just upgraded to FH13. Based on my reading here, that upgrade included an improvement to the 3G modem. If that is true, this is a pretty sad phone - let me explain.
I downloaded Speedtest to my phone, a 2+ year old HTC EVO and here phone. I then ran Speedtest on both. (Actually, it was much harder than that. The GPS on her phone was simply not working, and Speedtest thought I was near Wichita, not southeast Michigan. Even after rebooting to get the GPS working, Speedtest still thought I was hundred of miles form here. Fortunately, the second-to-last server listed overlapped with the servers listed on my phone.)
To be clear: I did one phone then the next. I turned off the WiFi and help both phones in the same location.
HTC EVO: Ping - 192 ms, download - 2531 kbps, upload - 612 kbps
Samsung E4GT: Ping - 173 ms, download - 1789 kbps, upload - 520 kbps
The only difference is that my phone is rooted and I am running AdFree, but that certainly cannot account for the huge difference in performance.
I was actually quite pleased with my wife's phone until I a) ran headlong into the very poor GPS performance and b) saw the poor modem performance. I understand now why HTC phones cost more...

I thought it was common knowledge that the antennas on the e4gt were a little weaker than most, that seems to be a common trend in Sammy phones. If you want strong antennas I'd recommend Motorolla, however the software on their phones is ****. Motoblur, bleh. Regardless, Samsung still makes the best phones on the market and smother everything else out right now. The S2 helds its title until the S3 came out, nothing tops a Sammy phone but another Sammy I believe the smooth performance and top of the line GPU/CPU/screen is a good trade off.
My apologies if this sounded like a troll message. My wife's phone is clearly faster than mine with regard to processing speed. This is clearly noticeable when updating apps. My post was more a matter of disappointment - why it should clearly excel in some areas but seem to fall flat on others, especially given that it is a much newer device.
I just downloaded and installed Quadrant Standard on both phones. My perceptions were correct - the Samsung is MUCH faster than the EVO. So, again I ask/wonder, why the much slower 3G speed and poor GPS performance?

Your Samsung radio is not going to do better than the HTC radio, first and foremost you have to accept that. Then you can move on to trying out other modems in an attempt to improve signal and download/upload speeds.
There's a LONG list of them that have been released since back in February; you'll find the downloads for each in a stickied post in the development. It doesn't matter what kernel or ROM you are running, you can swap out modem builds at will. If one doesn't work, flash another but always make sure you update profile & PRL after each flash and before running any sort of speed tests.

Happy flashing!

Fh13 is battery improvements, if you update your prl that will help with download speeds. There are way to many variables for data speeds to get reliable info. 1.7 mbs download is damn good on 3g, I wish I got those speeds, I get .5 MBS if I'm lucky in Sacramento, ca. So anyway unless you have one of the lte phones that Sprint offers there is no better phone then the S2. And those phones are by no means leaps and bounds ahead of this one.

Thanks for the feedback. I am not an expert with regard to these matters and had assumed that a) the the newer phone would have a faster modem than the older one and b) the download speeds I recorded were not out of the ordinary. My expectations have been reset and I will enjoy her phone (when I can) for what it does well.
Those speed differences are small, I don't think you will notice. Also the faster processor will probably still load Web pages faster even with the slightly lower network speeds.

For those who have been kind enough to reply: I finally rooted the phone today and reran the test. Post root, the results are:
Samsung E4GT: Ping - 161 ms, download - 2339 kbps, upload - 641kbps
These values are essentially the same as the HTC - no complaints.
Wow really? A thread whining about 1.7mb on 3g... That's f'in good speed for 3g.. There's plenty of us who can't even get past the kb's. Go get yourself an Evo and enjoy your HTC reloading screen...

You'll find there is a whole lot to love about this phone and with the amazing developers in this forum your choices for customization are endless. Getting rid of my E4GT was one of the hardest things I've done (as far as my gadgets are concerned) but I'm also enjoying the SGSIII.

You have to understand something, network speeds tests are not exactly reliable measures. If you want comparable measurements, you have to run multiple tests on the 2 phones using the identical server at the same time. Then you average the tests. Otherwise, what you have is one data point, testing from a server at different times. So one point may have been when server was less loaded, or the network was less loaded. And even then, your original tests were close enough that you would not notice it, and to be "underwhelmed" just because of that is silly.
Root has absolutely nothing to do with data speeds. What accounted for the improvement is most likely a decreased load on the server or Sprint's network. I have seen much more variation than that on my own phone, simply by testing at different times of the day.
worrying about a 500 k difference on what appears to be pretty great 3g(remember, some sprint users get literally 100kbps) seems kinda bourgeois. how much faster do you need your porn to download?

Silly question but it must be asked. Are you sure that your friend's S2 is with T-Mobile and not Sprint or some other carrier?
Also, are you using some funky aftermarket case that might be blocking your reception?
Third, here's a link to the newest radio. I've tried all and it is by far the best. I get d/l of 27mbit and upload around 3.6mbit. Insane speeds using a touchwiz rom.

If you were on CM then it's a known issue but you said stock rom so.... I'm fresh out of ideas. There's no reason why yours should be slower. My speeds are insane and there really isn't much different in your setup. I suppose maybe your antenna isn't connecting like it should? Do you have weak or low signal that is lower than your friend's S2? If they are the same then it's not an issue.
If you are rooted the first thing to try would be to flash each of the radios in the dev section. Could solve your problem right there.
If that doesnt check your build.prop and try a few of these values:
ro.ril.gprsclass=12; 30;31;32;33;34
ro.ril.hsxpa=3
ro.ril.hsdpa=26;28;30;32;34;36
ro.ril.hsupa=7;8;9
You will only use one number at a time for each. I listed multiple as any one of them can be best for you in your location.
My recommended starting values for testing are as follows:
ro.ril.gprsclass=32 then 12, 30, 34
ro.ril.hsxpa=3
ro.ril.hsdpa=28 then 32, 34, 30
ro.ril.hsupa=9 then 7, 8
Good info about these are on Wikipedia.
You will need to reboot after each change for it to take effect. Time and data consuming to test, but it might help you out.
Thats just my recommended testing method. You can of course jump around as much as you wish!
Make sure there is a blank line at the end of the build.prop and also check for and delete duplicate entries.
If all else fails go to tmobile before selling it. Ive heard of a number of people getting replacements for stuff like this, even after the remorse period. If you can get an S3 going good itll blow that S2 away! I see no reason why the S2 should be significantly better in any area!
Good luck!

Slow LTE speeds

Just picked up my new Nexus, got the job update and works great. My Rezound is getting over 20 mb down but the Nexus struggles to get 7 - 8 mb down. Any ideas why the much slower speeds?

So 4g is staying connected, but speeds are slow? I wonder if this is a software or hardware issue? This may be a silly question, but you are testing your Nexus with the same variables as you're testing your Rezound, correct? I'm certainly no expert on the matter, though, so hopefully someone who's had this problem can help you.
Yes, I tried changing sim cards, no luck. The Nexus maintains the 4G signal, doesn't drop, just 1/2 the speed of my Rezound. I even bought a jacket to slide the small sim card into to use it in the Rezound, which takes the full size sim, same results. I am running complete stock, not yet rooted, bootloader still locked. Live in a great 4G area and never drop to 3G.
HELP, PLEASE

Hmm.... almost sounds like a rx (radio) problem, unless you're testing inside a metal building or something. I'm looking to purchase one of these phones, so I'll keep an eye on this thread to see if someone can give you some answers. Did you purchase the phone new? If so, perhaps you could take it back and exchange for another new one?

Is there not much difference between 7-8 and 20 mb down? I'm still stuck in the 3g world at the moment. I'm sure speed varies depending on different variables, but if his Rezound is doing 20, shouldn't his Nexus be closer to that number as well? I just want 4g lol..... Most of my local friends have me jealous of their 4g phones. Thanks for the two year contract, Verizon.....lol...

Yes it is a "pretty big" difference when you compare 20 to 8. But in real life not so much. Anyway, I've been looking for a technical reason for the slower speeds on the GNex, but haven't found anything. They both have LTE 700 MHZ Class 13.
Only thing I can suggest to the OP is to make sure he has the latest radio.

not complaining about the speed but the major difference in the two phones at the same location using the same sim card. I am running the latest Jelly Bean update. I have several phones on different carriers and am very familiar with rooting a phone. I did get the phone from Verizon and paid full price because I wanted the Nexus. I have had all of the Nexus phones but never got this latest until now. Love the feeling of the latest update and didn't realize how much I missed the pure Google Android experience until I started going thru the phone. Now I just want to make sure I have a solid phone before I start getting too involved with it. If I have to swap it back, I will, just hate going thru that whole process.
Thanks for all the input,

So basically it looks like a lot on paper, but not so much in practice. Sounds like this is a common occurrence with these phones.
I remember when I first looked into the GNEX on verizon. At the store, it would get the slowest 4G speeds. The sales person tried to get me to look into the droid razr maxx or something which had much higher 4G speeds. And I have heard that with the verizon GNEX, it has a few issues with LTE. Even at the store, I could see that it had a hard time switching back and forth between 3G and 4G.

Skynote (4.3) LTE super slow speeds..anyone else?

Hi guys!
I am having a BIG issue with this ROM with LTE connection.
I thought at first it was a matter of issues where I live or maybe I was being capped by ATT (I should not be over the limit yet) but yesterday I decided to test at home which usually is about 20Mb download and got the same result as I get at work, not even 1Mb down! Really just about .55 and 1.18 upload!
I checked the APN and it looks like the normal ATT settings I use but even tried some other "alternative" ones I have used before and same thing. Changed the modem to the one on the OP and same issue.
Tested a different ROM and back I was at the 20Mb download at home.
No idea what is going on but this is a killer for m :/
Anyone else seeing this?
It almost looks like it was been capped since it speeds up to 1.5 and then starts kicking down to that .55 or so level. But as my test showed, it works fine with other Roms
I am more surprised not seeing more reports about this. This is testing right after flashing so no other apps could be causing this etc.
Unfortunately i was getting all-around sluggish performance from Skynote 4.3 and was essentially forced away from it to get better performance out of my device. On my t0ltecan(TELUS) i was getting about 1/2 speeds compared to my typical on other ROMs
Well now I am totally confused. Flashed CM11 again today and my speed is still slow. So it looks like throttling but that does not explain how I got normal speeds yesterday...gosh I hate mysteries like this! :/
