My phone gets really bad reception everywhere with 3rd party ROM. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I've got the T-Mobile M919 S4 and I have a 4.4.4 ROM on it (Insane Hybrid).
I've got the latest NK2 Baseband and I also don't want to upgrade to Lollipop since I did before and it was lag lag lag lag lag after a week or so.
I've noticed recently that it is getting very poor reception.
My buddy's S3 will have two bars and mine will show no service. Or it'll have bars but no data service. Or I won't be able to call out.
There also seems to be an unusual amount of spots where I have no service.
When I do have service, the data can get really really slow.
My GPS lock also frequently gets lost during navigation.
Any ideas? Do I need to flash a kernal, modem, or radio or something? Which ones?

Try updating your baseband. That sometimes solves it. Here's the link:

Thanks, I'll give those a shot. I'm going to flash this and see what happens:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...stock-base-4-4-4-nk2-rooted-deodexed-t2990478
I'm still a bit confused on some of the terminology and what's bundled with what.
- The "modem" is the same as the "radio", right? It's a driver that controls how the device deals with cellular voice and data signals. I can find the version of my modem/radio by looking at the last letters in my "baseband."
- The modem/radio driver is usually bundled with a ROM, right? So the ROM that I flashed above will also update/replace my current modem/radio driver?
- Modem/radio drivers can be separate from the ROM itself. If I use a 4.4.4 rom that has NK2 bundled, I can still flash just a NH4 radio using ODIN onto the old ROM and be ok, right?
- Where does the kernal come in? I'm assuming the kernel is bundled with the ROM and the kernal is only in charge of the switching between cellular and WiFi data, right?

That's the price you pay with custom roms, sometimes your lucky and everything works the way it's supposed to sometimes it doesn't.
Run phone for a day and make sure everything works properly after flashing back to stock before attempting custom again.
If you need your device to function as a reliable phone, making and receiving calls and messages you may have to rely on stock roms.
Pp.

[Q] Dirty Unicorn flashed over Stock Rooted, what modem?

[[SPRINT]]
So my dad trashed his E4GT by dunking it in a river. Then dropped it at work cracking the screen. Gave him my old one. Had a hell of a time getting it programmed to his line, but I got it. eventually had to flash the One-Click Stock (JB) odin to fix an issue where he could not connect to WiFi. After that, flashed Dirty Unicorn, and all was good. Or so we thought (we were in range of an Airave). Seemed he no longer had any reception off of the Airave. After much searching it seemed possibly due to the fact that the phone refused to leave WCDMA mode. Long story short, I fixed the issue by starting back on Stock Rooted (JB), getting fresh PRL and Profile after wiping EVERYTHING i could find, and then flashed back to DU. He was totally fine for two weeks. Now all of a sudden he again has no signal off of the Airave. He is in a bad reception area, but when it is working properly he gets enough to call, text, browse a bit, etc. But when it is acting up like this, he cant do anything at all off of Wifi and/or Airave.
TL;DR
Going from stock rooted JB to JB Dirty Unicorn, would that cause modem issues (being that the stock rooted most likely has a JB modem, and you arent supposed to use JB modems on JB Dirty Unicorn)?

ICS modem for DU..pretty much all aosp ROMs ( ICS to jb )..the latest ICS modem is FL24. Flash that modem or another ICS modem on the phone. Then do the temp boot to upgrade prl and profile.. If you're on stock again you can flash the modem and update the prl and profile.. Then flash DU.. Making the move to DU shouldn't have messed up the modem..if you did the above..

No I hadn't flashed an ICS modem. Everything you said the first time was correct. I went straight from JB Stock to DU. Spaced out on the modem because I was in a rush to get everything working. And when it actually did work fine for 2 weeks and now stopped, it threw me off.
I am going to see if tomorrow I can walk him thru the One-click to install FL24

No need for a one-click.. Just have him download an ICS modem from rwilcos repo..( zip format ) and then boot to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache. Then flash the modem.. Next time you have a moment you can do the temp boot to update prl/profile

You the boss.. But there is no way..hooking you're phone to a computer is easier than flashing one zip file from you're phones own recovery.. In my opinion.. Less steps my way , too. If you need any help with flashing a modem from a phone or you're dad does. Just hit me up. I'd be glad to help.. I finally have my dad texting and my mom on a rooted huawei ascend 2..although I did all the heavy lifting for her, she's starting to get it..lol.

Just ran thru installing the ICS modem. No change. Cant update the PRL or Profile on DU of course, though. Updating the PRL and/or Profile necessary for any change to take effect?
Also JFYI, yes I know what it will take to update them, just wondering if having not done that yet is what would be causing there to still be a lack of signal

This is where I'm not sure, everybody says to update..but I have went without, but I did notice my signal bouncing around..... But I'm in a very good signal area.. I would say an update can't hurt...FYI...I get the best signal on gb27.. On touchwiz...of course. There are some good tw Roms out lately..too. You could always go back to stock to see if its the rom/modem..Then work back to cm/aosp or tw... This signal stuff is funny to mess with..what works for one might not for the next.. I can't remember what carrier you have but a signal repeater might be a choice..

Sprint. He has gotten signal where he is before in DU (and that was with a JB modem, no less) for two weeks. It was low signal, but it was signal no less. Our only option is to get the phone working normal, a repeater will not do as he has no signal at his house, at his job, or anywhere within approx 60 miles of where he lives. Normally he has low signal, but atm he has zero. I am currently waiting for his download of a Stock Rooted rom to finish so we can flash that (which I know for sure will give him signal) then flash the ICS radio, update PRL and Profile, and then try DU again. If that does not work I will just have to have him stick to the Stock Rooted JB rom, since we know he gets signal on that.

[Q] SPH-L900 Flashed to Cricket: Unable to get service with custom ROM

I just got a Note 2 SPH-L900 (Sprint) it has a bad ESN for sprint but my intention was to flash it to cricket. I had noticed the same thing before the flash over to Cricket (I was messing with it over wifi etc and I did flash cm10.2 nightly just for the heck of it, then back to stock) but I could not verify service since I am not a Sprint customer. However the issue seems to not be carrier-specific.
When I flash custom ROMs I do not have service. No call, no data, nothing but wifi. The signal bar is empty and I get a big "?" Where the carrier is supposed to be. Also under "status" there is many blank spaces, no phone number, no carrier etc. Upon factory restore (which was done 2 or 3 times to ensure a bad ROM flash was not the culprit) the service icons and settings come back as before and everything works well.
I have tried two separate ROMs that give me the same issue: cyanogenmod 10.2 nightly
Rootbox jelly bean
Anyone know what may be wrong? I do not think this has to do anything with the flash over to cricket, since before it was doing the same thing. Any setting/procedure that I may be missing?
Edit: I did not do anything with kernels. My stock ROM android version is the 4.1.2

Well, i got it working now!!! i did reflash the modem to the latest MC2 version, then installed a custom kernel, Sleshepics the governor 1.7.
Then i reflashed the CM10.2 nightly and i magically have signal and data working.
SO EXCITED!
trying to flash my galaxy note ii sph-l900.. need help
i went to a couple of places and they said it couldnt be done.. it has low signal ... it only works on certain areas..
need help
Well it all depends on your signal. I live in Austin TX and cricket has great service here, with some dead spots out in the country (no big deal). 3g speeds are as fast as Sprint's 4g LTE.
The problem I was having had to do when I was flashing custom ROMs I was lising service.
I updated the modem drivers. It did the trick. I havent list service since and ive flashed like 6 ROMs so far.

4.4 seems to require at least the 4.3 modem baseband, you need to flash it via Odin. Be careful on the version, note the one already installed and chek which one is the normal upgrade. My m919v only worked with it's specific modem.
There's a few topic about this. Can't post link but look for this one: [ONLY FOR MDL BOOTLOADER] How to use 4.3 MK2 Modem and Retain Sound
Okay so I just returned to stock because I couldn't fix the problem .. so now i'm running android 4.2 and my wifi wont connect. Keeps giving me this when I try to turn on Wifi

[Q] CM11.0, 20140608, M7 Snapshot - Unable to get signal from radio

I started to experiment with different custom ROMs available for the d2att (now, apparently called the d2lte). My phone is using TeamWin 2.6.3.1 for recovery, I have been using it for everything. So far I have only been familiar with two certain ROMs: Cyanogenmod and CarbonROM. I have not flashed anything except for the recovery.
I complete the installation of my new ROM by first wiping cache, dalvik, data and system. My ROMs are stored on an external SD.
CarbonROM was the first one to be installed, but I found it quite buggy and unstable. I have since been using different snapshots of CM to test functionality and stability...since I plan to hang up my LG G2 and start using my SGS3 w/7200mAh battery as my daily phone. So it needs to be very reliable. I also enjoy picking with settings so the more settings the better.
So, question number #1:
When I install CM the normal way, add my APN, and select the proper mobile network mode, how come I cannot get a signal, no matter what I try? I have searched around many forums for the answer to this...many have nothing to do with my problem or are using different phones. I can confirm my SIM card works, as it was used in my LG G2. Carrier is Virgin Mobile Canada. Network mode is GSM/WCDMA Auto. It does not work with any other modes including Global.
Q #2:
If I plan on using custom KK (4.4.2) ROMs, is there anything extra I need to flash to the phone in order for the cell radio to work successfully? When I researched this, I found lots of people talking about flashing a custom bootloader, but I could not find an exact answer to my question. I would rather not brick my phone by attempting this blindly.
Q #3:
Since I am looking for a reliable custom ROM, is CM the best developer to choose? Is there a more reliable ROM out there?
Mike
EDIT: I did more reaseach on bootloaders and modem firmware and found that my bootloader is already at the most recent version. I did find however that my modem firmware was out of date, so I updated from UEMK5 to UEND3. This however did not solve my problem as I still have no service...
I am contemplating now about starting from scratch and wiping my internal storage... will this help or is it unnecessary?
For question # 1, do you have a proper imei after installing CM11? You can check it in the dialer by typing in *#06#.
For question #2, the modem must be compatible with the bootloader. Custom ROMs will only install if the phone has a compatible bootloader.
For question #2, I prefer Validus which is an AOSP-based ROM.

I have an IMEI number. That is what has me kind of confused...everything is there to show signal, it's just that it will not pick up a tower. When I throw a SIM card in it recognizes it. One thing to also mention is it pins the signal at 0, -1, or 258692378... or another outrageous number.

I am now on stock 4.3 firmware. I have obtained a GPS lock.
No service at all.
But... I had a funny feeling, so I went into stock android recovery and wiped cache...and voila, service!
Only problem is, I'm losing it almost constantly. The only way to fix it is by wiping the cache, but I can't keep doing that whenever I lose service.
Will I be okay to flash the custom recovery and custom ROM at this point?
Do you have the latest modem installed?

If you are still on the Stock TW ROM here is a method to try. It will clear most of your mobile data problems.
1. Enter the Samsung service mode by typing this code into the dial pad *#197328640#
2. Then go to Mainmenu>UMTS>Common>NV REBUILD>NV REBUILD> (Important: don't exit the menu yet!)
3. Wait 30+ sec
4. Long press power button and select "Restart / Reboot"
5. Now check your GPS from any software that may use GPS like "Maps" or "GPS Status"
Credit: S3Rx ROM Development Thread.
EDIT: Afterwards you should be good to go on your custom ROM. This issue seems to have arisen when a d2lte build broke most people's LTE/Mobile data.

I have found the problem with the service. I live in an area where signal is not too great. My LG G2 has a tendency to pick up the correct tower for my area, but my Galaxy S3 does not choose the same tower... It looks for one in a completely different direction.
Forgive me, this thread is going to take a bit of a turn.
Is there any way to choose which cell tower the phone connects to? In my area there is one directly east and the other is directly west. I need the western tower in order to make/receive calls/text and in order to get any data reception. Right now where my phone sits, it does not connect to the western tower so I cannot use it. I used OpenSignal to observe which tower both phones connect to.
The other issue I found is my extended battery (Anker 7200) also interferes with reception quite a bit. In town, it's not noticeable. But out on my acreage it stops my phone from getting any signal. I compared it to my LG G2 and my Galaxy S3 with the old 2100mAh battery. The G2 hovers around -95, S3 w/OEM battery at -101 and the S3 w/Anker battery at -113 (no service).

Hmm. Out of curiosity, have you tried a different ROM on 4.4.2? I've had weird issues with ROMs and signal, ie MIUI caused me to have my signal cut in and out at random intervals. Worth a shot at least. I've been using SlimKat if you want one for reference (probably the quickest download due to size).
Unfortunately all I can suggest is trying to play with tasker and seeing if you can get it to skip over the crap tower, but to my knowledge there's no way to prevent connection to said tower.
I guess if you wanna get into a gray area you could modify said tower....but I claim no responsibility for your actions with that

I've been using Liquidsmooth the past few nights and am losing signal more than ever.
Would the OS control how the modem is used? I would think that it's hardware only that changes how and when you get service.
I'm going to try the UEND3 modem firmware and see if that makes a difference. Also going to try SlimKat like you suggested.

[Q] Problem with Signal/Service - weak Signal, breakdowns

my device now: i9195, I9195XXUCNE6-DBT
I experience weak signal and many connection dropdowns. When this occured first, after i upgraded f4ktion Kernel 1.3.6 to 1.4.5 and
an older version of Carbon Rom (4.2.2) to 4.3 Carbon Rom. Until than everything was fine, flash of rom and kernel did not made any problem.
Btw i used Odin3 3.09 and clean install (step by step like in the guides) all the time.
After some days this realy annoyed me, so i went back to the older Carbon and kernel - problem still occurs.
So i went back to stock rom I9195XXUBML4-DBT (original was UBML4) - problem still existing.
Some time later f4ktion 1.5 and Carbon 4.4.4 was available, so i tried this..still no solution.
Now i am back to stock and updated to I9195XXUCNE6-DBT, same problem.
Some research told me many ne stuff to know..like flashing modem only. I tried some, nothing helped.
After hours of pointless googleing i noticed something on my phone. When i dont type the pin, i have normal signal. As soon as i type the pin
and "activate" my simcard, the signal strength drops. So i googled again and found this:
[Bug Watch] Android 4.3 Radio Bugs Causing Cell Connection Drops On Some Nexus 4 Handsets, Fixes In Sight (not allowed to post links)
I changed the network type to WCDMA only - it helped for some minutes(not many..maybe 2-3). I changed to GSM only and i had normal,
stable signal for like an hour. But later signal loses strenght again, and i need to change network type again.
I have the feeling, that its like a reset or restart of the radio.
But now i am all out of ideas and need some help.
Last thing i can do, is to bring it to repair. But my Knox says 0x1, so maybe you can help me before i ask Samsung.
I have similar problem since ugrading to KitKat roms. I had no problems with previous none Knox roms with MH3 modem but now with NE6 and NF7 KK modems the signal swings constantly up and down from 4 to 1 bars. This is in areas I previously had good signal. Internet also keeps dropping out requiring data toggling on and off. I've reflashed KK 20+ times and haven't been able to get rid of this problem yet.
I'm not sure if pre knox modems are installable but I intend to try and reflash MH3 modem, once I manage to do a successful backup.
I solved a similar problem by downgrade to 4.2.2 Brazil NE2, knox 2. Flashing separate modem (NE2), and reflashing full rom again. No problems for now
Now you stay on 4.2.2 ?
I dont understand why some people do have problems and some not. Is there different hardware version causing the trouble ?
Give me pls some information how you did the downgrade.
-Nandroid Backup
-philz
-Odin (if yes which version)
-why did you choose that rom
I tried to, but wasnt succesfull. I used Odin3 3.09 to flash 4.2.2 (UAMF5 i think) rom and got a brick. When trying to fix this nothing helped until i tried to flash with Odin3 3.04. But all i could do was flashing newest FW again. Did not test more after that, because i was very busy.
If you say that going back solved your problem, i will try again go go back myself. I've found some information on that and when its done i give some informations.
Same here, help?
I'm having the same problem with a newly acquired handset. I have full signal on some places and nothing on others, unfortunately in my house I have no signal! So it's quite exasperating.
My baseband version is I9195XXUCNE6
Android version is 5.0.2 with 3.4.0-cyanogenmod-g92aec50 [email protected] #1 kernel
Cyanogenmod version is 12-20150306-UNOFFICIAL-serranoltexx
Would it help if I flash a separate modem file through Odin? In that case, which one should I flash?
Any help would be appreciated a lot.
Thanks
