firewater is discontinued, even if you have the file it wont work, cause it need's to contact the devs' server, and it was not very reliable on the M8 anyway
only s-off method is sunshine (paid app $25)

Spend the $25. It will save you from a lot of headaches.
Without it, whenever you need to update your firmware, you will have to flash a stock backup, flash a stock recovery, take the OTAs from your carrier, re-unlock your bootloader, flash a custom recovery, and flash superuser to reroot.
With S-Off, you just flash the firmware and you are done.

All good except the relocking/unlocking the bootloader. That's not needed when you go back to stock with a nandroid in order to get ota's

I thought the bootloader gets locked when you take the OTA. But I wouldn't know personally. I haven't ever taken an OTA before. Never needed to on any device.
EDIT: It's early for me. I'm only on my second coffee. I'm thinking RUUs

You must work for Sunshine team because i was looking around for a straight answer which push me to get S-OFF. I consider S-OFF just because Adaway and how much i hate ads, it's just annoying and my phone feels cheap with all of them; so i wish that once i get Sunshine and get S-OFF, it could work.
Just a question before pulling: I have the Malasyan or sorta version of the M8, the M8X running lollipop with bootloader unlocked and rooted, would Sunshine works?
Thanks for help.

It was a straight answer. Firewater doesn't work anymore, because HTC patched all of the exploits. And no, I don't work with Sunshine. It's just that it is the ONLY way to gain S-Off now. I actually used Firewater back when the M8 was just released and out for maybe a month, and before the exploits were patched.
I'm not sure if it will work for device or not. When you run it, it does a diagnostic check of your phone first, and you are only prompted to pay if it will work for you.

Help with S-OFF M8 3.16 HBOOT

Hey xda!
I've been a long time lurker here but this is my first post. I am absolutely stumped as to what to do now.
I recently purchased a locked M8, from telus. Got it unlocked by buying an unlock code no issues there whatsoever.
However, i htcdev unlocked my M8 in hopes of getting S-Off but to my dismay, im having problems with that.
Here are the steps i took:
Unlocked bootloader
Flashed latest TWRP
Ran firewater but it said device not supported.
Im running android 4.4.2 and my hboot is 3.16
OS: win 7 Home premium x64
Ive been searching for hours but cant find a solution, please help guys!
Thanks!

After buying the device outright, and paying for an unlock code I decided I wasn't going to spend another 25 dollars on sunshine. Any other alternatives? Is there any other way besides s off to remove the tampered tag in the boot loader?
Thanks once again!

no, sunshine is the only way to get s-off and then remove the tampered flag. Why you payed for a unlock code if you can unlock the sim if you are s-off ?

At the time getting an unlock code would have been cheaper as opposed to buying an external sd card and upon knowing now that sunshine is the only way which is an extra 25$ besides it's easier for me to sell the device later by saying it's factory unlocked.
So is sunshine the ONLY way?

I have one last question, how would i go about to returning the m8 to stock If i decided to in the future? Can i use the toolkit thats here on xda to flash the stock ROM?
I have a Telus M8, where can i find the stock ROM for it? (not that the fact that it was originally from telus should matter)
Once again, Thanks for all the help!
As no public RUUs are available for the M8 (bar a few US carrier ones) you'd need a stock backup of the Telus ROM (back your own one up and keep it safe!) and the stock recovery and then use a few commands if S-OFF to remove the tampered and unlocked/relocked flags. Other than that you should be good to go

Ok, I've made a backup with TWRP. So my ROM should be fine, What about my recovery though? I believe I didnt make a recovery backup and went ahead by flashing TWRP. Also, If i do find a recovery for my variant how will i flash it? Via fastboot?

Be careful! TWRP does not backup all your firmwares device. Just boot, data, system & cache partitions. If you flash a wrong RUU you could run into problems.
Search & read all twice before do anything.

Which steps would i take to ensure i Have a proper backup of my current ROM? As far as I know I need 2 things: 1) stock rom backup 2) stock recovery (which i found on xda)
So in order to return to stock I would have to: Flash Stock ROM, then flash stock recovery via fastboot. I dont even think i need any RUU. Let me know if I'm correct.
Bump!
Help please, I dont want to end up bricking my device. All i need is clarification on how to do a proper backup of stock ROM. And how to restore that rom, remove root, and flash the stock recovery. Ive searched on google as well as on xda but cannot find a concrete answer.

Check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2725099
It will give u more info.
I know on the m7 it didn't work on phones with emmc 9001 serial. I have got two T-Mobile HTC m8s and firewater worked on both with no problems.
Just flash viper or arhd and try they both have an unsecured boot.img.
And go to the built in superuser app and change settings to apps and adb then try.
If your just gonna flash roms and aren't into development like some then you don't need s-off.
There's a lot of people that don't understand s-off and brick there phones by flashing something that was not for their phone.
So be careful of what you flash if u s-off.
On my m8 my emmc serial begins with 1501.
On play store there's an app called emmc brick bug checker. Use it and it will show you your emmc

Hello. I have an HTC ONE M8 CID : ORANG001. Bootloader LOCKED and S-ON. Running : Android 4.4.3
It is carrier unlocked, I can use whatever sim I like with this phone. Now, I want to get rid off ORANG001 and change it with a HTC__001 or some other CID so I can receive updates directly from HTC.
Does anyone know some safe steps to accomplish this ? Or I can change somehow the recovery with another one ? I think ORANG001 means that is orange stock recovery. It's not carrier locked, but still, I want to replace the ORANG001.

Yeah but to S-OFF one must be rooted first, right?
UPDATE : I just unlocked the bootloader. I want to root the device but what TWRP should I flash ?
UPDATE : Rooted the device and installed SuperSU via TWRP. Next, getting S-OFF.
UPDATE : I get this message while flashing firewater : firewater can not work on your device.
Until I manage to S-OFF can I flash through TWRP a custom ROM like CM for example ? Or S-OFF is a must for doing this ?

For firewater yes, I'm not familiar with the other methods.
If it's saying it doesn't work for your device, you're out of luck, unless you try the other methods. Which you do at your own risk obviously.

Are you sure you need s-off?
From your posts, I can plainly tell you are a noob. (no offence, that just what we call the new to rooting people here.)
S-on is there to protect your device from becoming bricked when you flash something you shouldn't be.
With S-off, if you screw up, your $700 phone might be turned into a paperweight with absolutely zero chance that the warranty is still valid.
If you want my advice, don't go S-off till you know what you are doing.

Or do you just want it because you think it's cool?

I sent a PM then, and have just sent a new one two minutes ago before I saw this post.
Also, I just tried to send a friend request that didn't deliver because there was no friend button for it?
The junior status maybe?
Anyways, the gist of it was this:
I was very mistaken about you. You are obviously not a noob from what I've seen on subsequent posts, you are just an M8 noob. I was in your position once, and I get it 100%
The thing is, on the Q&A, I get sick of the same questions over and over and over.
And also, people getting into soft brick trouble because of s-off.
I have no worries about you though buddy.
You will be just fine. It's not really that hard. Just different than the rest.
It's worth it though. The M8 is SOOO nice!

Rooted, ROM'd, and wondering!

I've just finished rooting and installed a custom ROM on my device, but now I'm looking into S-Off. My question is, how?
I did this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2706391
and now I don't have Wi-Fi, which apparently means that my firmware needs to be updated.
How, exactly, does one do that when you're no longer on the service provider it was on?
I'm on T-Mobile now, it was on AT&T. The phone is an AT&T HTC One M8.
I've got the files for Firewater, but I'm not 100% sure how to go about it, other than following tutorials I've found. Anyway, if someone could assist me in this search, it would be greatly appreciated.
Chances are firewater is not going to work, you'll need to use Sunshine S-off (pay 25$), S-off jas nothing to do with carrier
Sunshine: http://theroot.ninja
Firewater instructions: http://firewater-soff.com/instructions/
If I try Firewater, is there a chance to royally mess up my work? I.E. brick me, or will it error out beforehand?
firewater does NOT work. and will never work again. You can own the files but they won't work as it has has to establish a connection to the s-off server which is offline. sunshine is the one and only way. you can read that in the s-off thread here on xda and on their website !
and also questions belong in the Q&A section so please use that board the next time instead of the general subforum.
good luck with sunshine

Ah, see, this is the info that I couldn't find at all. I had no idea it was server-related, so it wouldn't work. I thought all the files were local, that's why I was investigating. Well, as long as Sunshine will work and not mess anything up, I guess that's what I'm going to have to do. Even though there's another ROM on my phone, I should still be able to use Sunshine and get the firmware updated without any issues, yeah? I would just like to get confirmation from someone who knows my exact situation and not search the forums to a situation "Similar" to mine and eff up my phone.

S-OFF means do as you like, change firmwares, convert to GPE and back to sense. S-OFF is freedom
Okay, here's where I'm at, if anyone would inform me in the direction I should take...
I've unlocked the bootloader, flashed a ROM, and rooted. Wi-Fi doesn't work because I need the newer firmware on the device.
In order to get the newer firmware, I need to have S-Off. I don't. Sunshine doesn't work because the ROM I have flashed is a 5.0.1 version.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2706391 If it helps.
Can I go digging to find a KitKat-based ROM and see if Sunshine will work then, or do I need to go through the BS to flash stock everything on my phone and THEN run Sunshine? I'd really like some advice before I royally mess something up.
Thanks in advance!
Edit: I found this and it looks like something that might work. Flash InsertCoin, download and pay for Sunshine, S-Off, flash firmware, go back to SkyDragon?

Forgive me for asking, but I've searched... Where is this rooted stock one you're talking about?
All right, I've flashed back to as stock as I can find, but it's still not allowing Sunshine to be installed.
However, I've stumbled upon something saying that if the Recovery is fastboot booted, it acts as though the device is S-Off? If I run the recovery in such a manner, could I possibly flash a new Firmware on there like that?

Okay, here's an update:

Flashed the Viper ROM, but didn't have Wi-Fi. So, I went back to SkyDragon, same thing.
I flashed firmware 4.28.401.9 (I think. I did typed that from memory..) but I still have no Wi-Fi.
I'm going to try to flash the GPE firmware now. I'll edit once I get it up and running!
Thanks so much guys! I really appreciate your help!

If your wifi isn't working with ViperOne, then the firmware didn't flash correctly. Go to your bootloader/hboot and check the readout there. What it says under OS is your firmware version. If it is blank it is because of your recovery. TWRP 2.8.0.3 is recommended. You can also tell by the hboot number. 3.19 = 4.4.4 firmware

That's awesome to know. I literally just flashed the GPE firmware, and I think I partitioned properly. (no errors while installing) It's currently doing the first boot.
Flashing that GPE firmware was nerve-racking. It went sooo slow. Here's hoping it goes through! UPDATES TO COME! I'm excited.
UPDATE:
HOLY HNNNNNNNNNNNNNG IT WORKED.
Good LORD I CAN FINALLY DOWNLOAD MY UPDATES.
Please excuse the caps, I'm effing excited right now. THANKS SO MUCH EVERYONE.
Nice that you have it working.. Don't forget.. If you want to go back to sense you need the sense firmware.. As the partitions are a bit different.. Btw I'm very happy ? with gpe 5

Right at this point, I don't care to go back to Sense firmware. I'm spoiled by the bright look of SkyDragon, so this is where I'm staying!

You still got to unlock the bootloader as well as root to be able to use SunShine depending on FW and ROM version. After this you could de-brand the device e.g. by following my guide linked in my signature below.

I used Sunshine without unlocking my bootloader. Latest Sunshine has temp root, so it will unlock your bootloader and s-off your phone in one take. Also, you can leave bootloader locked and s-off only.

That I don't know. It's easy to check tho - go to Sunshine web page, download the latest Sunshine app, and run it. It will check your phone compatibility, and if it's compatible, it will ask you for payment. Easy as that

Ya I see they added Nougat support, which is great. The guys had said that at some point they wouldn't be able to ensure that temproot would work on verizon future updates. Still good so far.

I'm still on MM, so I don't really know much about Nougat, but, as I said before - download Sunshine app and run it. It will do all verifying steps for you, and if your phone is compatible, you're good to go. If not, no harm, no foul. Uninstall the app, and that's it. No payment is required untill your phone is verified as compatible
I concur. I installed Sunshine last week on my stock MM HTC 10, no need to unlock or to root before that. It worked just fine, now I'm S-off and still locked.
+1 on what was said about sunshine
If your on nougat make sure you use the latest TWRP here
As for root you can use either Magisk or just flash the latest SuperSU here

Sorry, no idea about that. I didn't even try to unlock it. As the option not to unlock was offered in Sunshine, I didn't look further...
Let's hope some connoisseur will be able to help you.

Why on earth would you want to do that ? If you are S-OFF you don't need to unlock the bootloader for anything at all !

Yes. Why you would do that seems strange though. You just need to get your hooks on the ruu.exe for your phone and run it. Your phone will be returned to the sorry, pathetically uncustomizable, stock rom.
For my device, Viper10 3.5.0 MM rom is as good as it gets. Nothing better. Not impressed with Nougat nor the CM based roms that are perpetually in an "Unofficial" state.

You can do that with any CID. A custom rom has nothing to do with your CID.

SuperCID allows you to flash every kind of RUU made for the HTC 10, although there may still be reasons you wouldn't want to flash some of them versus some others. You might have to change your MID too.
Magisk not compatible with sunshine?
Sunshine says it's not compatible with magisk installed do I uninstall it.
