if your bootloader/modem is nj1 , which i assume you mean by recovery , you cannot downgrade !! it will brick your phone. perhaps using a custom kernel would help.
"all i can really do , is stay out of my own way and let the will of heaven be done"

thx. in that area I can get a custom kernel with support nj1?

One thing to keep in mind is that there are custom TouchWiz kernel and custom AOSP kernels. Don't put a custom AOSP kernel on a TouchWiz ROM, or vice versa. You can sometimes find both kernels in the same post if a dev maintains both. So pay attention to which you download based on the ROM you are running.

Sure you can install a custom kernel.
The stock rom is a TouchWiz based rom, so you would want a TouchWiz (TW) kernel. You can find kernel threads in the dev subforum. I am using the kernel that came with my rom and have not experimented with it or any others. This leaves me with no recommendation as to what would be better for you. All I can say is read the threads and see which ones work with the stock ROM.
Have you check to see what is using the most battery during the times your phone is running hot? This may give you an idea of what is causing the problem.

4.3 ROMs?

What ROMs are okay to flash if you have the Knox bootloader. Im so confused about this Knox thing. Ive read if it doesnt change your bootloader you will be fine and others saying i have to wait for a stok mk3 .tar (i do believe thats the right one) file to be available. one dev posted a rooted 4.3 rom and he said this wont mess with the bootloader. im just nervous dont want to brick my phone. someone please help and shed some light on this confusing situation
This should be Q and A section, and Cnexus posted a FAQ about this in general section....

I'm running the cm11/kitkat experimental build and I have the new knox bootloader, the rom requires some tweaking, I will post it soon if the original dev doesnt incorporate my fixes.

If you want a simple answer, then here it is: you can flash any rom you want.
Only one catch: do not EVER Odin a full stock tar with version < MK3 to your device or you will instantly brick.

Thank you. First answer I've been able to understand. Just stay away from Odin and .tar files. About to flash your ROM so I can have root and from what I've been reading pretty good battery life as well. Thanks for your work man.

I've been running it with ART and I haven't had it reboot on me yet. I think once I was doing something with the camera gallery and the camera 'broke" and required a restart but I can't remember if that was when I was playing with cm10.2 or cm11.

The original ROM checks for "know" baseband versions to make sure you dont try flashing the ROM on the wrong device. I had to unpack the ROM, add support for the new baseband and then repack the ROM inorder to get it to install. I also change he kernel cmdline to set SELinux to permissive mode by default (like it was in 4.3). I will post the tweaked ROM shortly.

does anyone have the stock 4.4 kernel?

I am planing on playing around with different kernels to see whats best but I want to have a copy of the stock AOKP kernel first so I dont have to restore a whole rom everytime I dont like the kernel. So if anyone has stock AOKP 4.4 kernel I would apriciate it much

To restore the kernel that came with you're rom, just dirty flash the rom. Don't wipe anything and your back on stock in a few minutes

[Q] suggestions on roms and guides to get started.

Sorry guys no time to use search.
Recently got a sgs 4 mini LTE (i9195) and was wondering what the best roms and tools are for her.
I'm pretty geeky so I like speed and stability and dark theme'd roms and just about any trick a device can pull off.
I mostly i'm and play fps games.
Please advise accordingly.
Thanks.
I really have no idea what to look for or how to get started at all.
If anyone thinks I'm going to start a troll war.. let me make it clear that I actually really like this device.
No idea what tools are safe.
Thanks for all the help.
Tried searching threads.
i'm on stock 4.2.2 and i still have no clue wtf to use.
All i want is to remove all the bloatware and get a nice kernel.

That depends on your phone whether it has Knox flag or not. You can see this in the stock recovery, with a string called: 'KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0x0'
If you see such string, that means you phone has Knox, install a custom recovery will trigger and become 0x1 = warranty void.
If have knox and care about warranty and only want ROOT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
If you don't have knox or don't care, than any other ROOT method with custom recovery can be used.

I always prefer the Slimrom myself, as the name applies, it got the least app preinstalled.
I'm using CyanogenMod, I can really recommend, it's really good.
Sent from my GT-I9195 using Tapatalk
In the time it took you to write the first 3 posts you could easily have found the info by yourself
Btw,I really like SlimKat - great battery and minimalistic - but if you like stock have a look at this rom and simply run the debloat script (should also be somewhere in there), else let me know and I will look for it in my bookmarks.
Sorry if i seemed to waste time I did some searches,
But in the past on other devices, I have had some roms that were full of trojans and even a bootloader that was made to trash a phone.
So I'm ultra careful making sure I don't flash anything funny.

[Q] Why won't this work? I'm clueless.

Okay so I'm trying to help my girlfriend flash CM11 on her Galaxy S3 i747 (US AT&T). Everything is just fine. I did not use the installer. I rooted, flashed TWRP (latest from the website), downloaded CM11 M12 from official download website and flashed it. Everything is working. Except for Skype. When it's a voice call, it's just fine. But as soon as she turns her camera on to start a video chat, it works for about five seconds, then Skype crashes. Here's the weird (and very irritating) part. This isn't limited to this ROM. I've tried CM11 M3 (yes. I went that low), I've tried AOKP (which got stuck in a bootloop at first boot, gave up), and Paranoid Android, LiquidSmooth, SlimKat. All from XDA, and the latest versions possible. They all have the exact same problem. Stock camera app works fine in all (except for a few times in which case a soft reboot fixed it.) I'm at a loss of ideas here. I've even tried a combination of running a different kernel. I tried running ParanoidAndroid with a Quantum 6 kernel. But still the exact same problem. Nothing I try seems to work.
I would go back to stock, but she likes iPhone emojis. So I wanna flash a 4.4.x+ ROM so I can change the emojis after rooting. Colored emojis aren't possible on Android 4.3 and below. And there is no official 4.4 ROM for this phone. What else should I try? Am I missing something?
Also, if I turn MY camera on, then her Skype shows my video stream just fine. Never crashes. It's only when she turns HER camera on the S3 that it starts to be stupid. All other apps work fine. We've been working on this for two weekends now.
I'm not new to flashing and rooting. Been doing it for a long time now with my phones and other people. But this is driving me nuts.
Bootloader and modem work fine. I flashed the bootloader to I747UCDMG2 and the modem to the same I747UCDMG2 before flashing CM11 for the first time. I don't wanna update the bootloader to I747UCUEMJB because Knox. (I had to deal with that on my phone, so no thank you.) Plus I don't think the bootloader has something to do with this, does it? If it's any help, I run an unofficial CM12 5.0.2 on a GT-i9500. I'll be grateful to anyone who can at least give me an idea of what Skype's deal is.

Don't I need a Samsung kernel for that? And do you mean like a port from the stock i747 OS? I think it has something to do with the kernel and not the ROM since this bug is not ROM exclusive. It happens on everything.

The CM camera isn't the most stable ever and all those roms build from the same tree if I'm not mistaken. Also there is an official 4.4 update for the S3.

OP specified Sense ROM.
OP, what software version are you looking for? That is just as important as KK versus LP, due to firmware differences even between KK builds.
What carrier version of the M8 do you have?

Yeah, I've never seen such a thing (and debloated was your best option). Sense doesn't even really use a gapps package like AOSP ROMs do. But rather, their own HTC Sense skinned apps. Closely tied into the Sense framework, so deploying the apps separately would probably not be a good idea.
Mike1986 has a download link in his ARHD thread and if you search around he has a odexed and deodexed stock 4.4.4 flashable. Then just buy root explorer from the play store and start removing unwanted bloat.
