You should research what root is, before deciding you want it.
You don't really need a "mentor" for this kind of thing. XDA is a wealth of information for the taking. Just take some time to look at the numerous guides, index threads, FAQ threads, and familiarize yourself with the concepts, benefits, risks, etc. Take the time to learn and understand before trying anything. If you feel like you've made a reasonable effort to search and research on your own and still have questions, by all means come back and post those questions for us to answer.

Simple Guide to Installing a ROM

This is my first real contribution to the forum, I hope some of you find this useful. Developers: If I missed anything important please let me know.
Simple Guide to Installing a ROM
Most of the process is trial and error and short of you working for Microsoft, there's never going to be a manual. There are many guides out there by people smarter than me so this is "Idiot's Guide" as it were.
Hopefully this streamlines the process...
Install Windows Mobile Device Center if you haven't already.
Also as pointed out below you need to CID unlock your phone. Instructions and links to the software needed can be found HERE
Find a version (build) that you like or try a bunch of them (that's the best way)... when your looking at the forum that this post is made in you'll know that your looking at a ROM because the post title will tell you that it's a ROM. Don't download developer builds or anything that says "beta" until you know what your doing.
Once you have your ROM ready make sure your battery is at at least 50% (that's the standard answer, I've installed with as little as 20%, but it's my phone to F up so if you F up your phone by not following the 50% rule, that's on you).
Sync your phone with Windows Mobile Device Center and leave your phone connected.
Run the EXE usually named something like RUUWrapper.exe and follow the onscreen instructions.
Ba-da-bing you've got a new ROM installed.
edit reason: CID Unlock step added
I know you want to do good, but yeah you missed something seriously important. For a post dedicated to newbies, you MUST remind to INSTALL HardSPL. It's the first thing you should say!!! Who cares about battery if you even install something to allow a safe flash!
And by the way this is a far better explanation on what people shoud do, it's the first sticky of this section and it is idiot proof : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299462 .
But still thank you for trying to explain it simply. But remind people to use the safety belt!
toni
Mod EDIT: Lets use Professional Language Please.
I can't think of anything easier than finding what's on the sticky here.
Why re invent the wheel?
@tonidekohlanta... If you feel strong enough to curse at me on what I thought was a family friendly website why not report the post to a mod and have it deleted.

Agree and I will report that post myself re the language used. no need for such language
Added step for CID unlock

Sorry for the language, don't get offended for it. I should say I have the bad habit of speaking in a bit casual way. Sorry again! And I didn't report because there were nothing to report! You're allowed to post want you think is interesting, as I'm allowed to tell if I think something important is missing. F* da* s*!
toni
edit : I read your post again, I think you missed the point. It's not just SuperCIDing the phone, it's about securing the rom from bad flash. There are method of SuperCIDing (first of them is to unlock the phone with a commercial software) without installing HardSPL. And HardSPL IS the important thing. It protects the flashing process, but in the same time allow to bypass the CID protection. But the security reason is the point!

No problem mate, thank you for the apology, I apologize for taking it personally myself, it struck me as a little harsher than I believe you meant it which is why I reacted the way I did.
As far as the SuperCID, I admit, I forgot. It is a very important step in the process, but it's been a while since I had to do it since I did it and I just forgot, which was why I asked the people with real knowledge to correct me if I was wrong (the bolded part of the original message).
The only reason I put this thread up was because like everyone else I'm sick of people asking the first most basic question of "how and what" that we hear in at least one forum everyday and I thought if there was a flat basic basic tutorial people might quit asking. Heck, if people see the post and then read your 1st reply they get the link to an in depth tutorial and my goal is still accomplished.
Honestly it was all done out of selfishness. I though maybe if I could cut down on the crap in the forum, I could find ROMS easier since there really isn't a way to sort anything in vBulletin (boo! prefer ipb myself, but not my show so not my call).
I understood exactly why you started your thread, and I'm also annoyed by the same newbies questions, that can be prevented by little search and common sense. But actually your thread will not be sticky, so it will disappear as soon as we will stop discussing here. So maybe it was not a worth thing to do. But as you said, the link to MrVanx thread is there, so yeah, mission accomplished. And good luck "cutting the crap" (you are also fond of some very very bad words!).

[Q] rom / root breakdown

Please excuse the question but I am a 4 month owner of a G2. Right before I bought the phone I startedlooking into the reviews for this phone which I ended up seeing things about modifying (rooting) the phone. I'm sorry to be asking aq question that may have been answered thousands of times but I do not want to act like I know what I'm talking about here. I'm in the construction business and use my phone for work and gradual personal use.
I am very intersted in modfying my phone to better suit me but I have no idea what each one of these different roots do. Are there any links out here that someone can guide me to in order to see the differences in these roots? I would like to know what each of them do in order to determine which root better suits me.
I appreciate any assistance you can offer out here. Thanks in advance.

As far as rooting your device, the guide in the wiki is the most failsafe: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...sion#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
As far as ROMs and modifications, here's the best jumping off point: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916431

The guide to rooting is fairly technical, but if you follow the steps (seriously, double check your typing before issuing commands), you'll be good to go. As far as the ROMs go, the list in the link I sent you is most of the more reputible ROMs and the links will take you to their threads which will detail the benefits, additions, etc. each ROM has.

I had spied that awhile ago. Finally tested it marvelc side; didn't work except for the desensing/resensing. That works from all indications.
I also found an apk on the market I've mentioned a few times that does root/unroot; It's called un-Rooting [and the subtitles are in a language I can't read; but it works marvelc side][anyone care to test it gsm side?]; busybox [installer] also available on market. I've found market apps to be easy advice.
As for gsm'ers only known tool [still] to work is the xtc clip; which is a small hardware device one can order for around $40; Simonsimon34 has the latest s-off guide for marvelc.
Alquez's cwm works on both cdma & gsm
Thought I'd drop mention of these tools again.
Rob
PS I found a really useful market app that was started here on xda.. ZDbox I got to find the thread and thank the developer, but it has battery percentage/status & power-saver, task killer, app uninstaller/management [inc Apps2sd], and System Cleaner [cache & history]. Can replace 4-5 apps with this one. Good good end-user tool.
Another misleading thread. l00k, please ask a mod to delete this.
It's already proven that it doesn't work on GSM phones.
The Wildfire S is already full of information on how to s-off CDMA phones.
There is no need to confuse more people.
I guess I can speak on behalf of all WFS GSM users. Please delete this. PLEASE!
Who created the Super Tool and who posted a thread about it on XDA should first confirm if the information is correct. It DOESN'T work on Wildfire S except CDMA versions.
In case you still didn't get it, this is NOT directed to you. It's a general complaint:
It's incredible that so many people post things just because somebody says it works.
Wouldn't it be smarter to confirm first and post after? I'm not talking about you, l00k.
I'm really tired of reading the same crap over and over again, including the people that almost want to force us to buy a XTC Clip. Some say it isn't rocket science because we can sell it after using... but maybe some people just don't have the time, patience or money to do that. It's easy to talk about ourselves. I guess some people should learn how to walk in other people's shoes.
A simple "Doesn't work on GSM" would of done the trick.
You don't get S-OFF for being a ****

question
Although this thread is a repeat and will get deleted because... well if you read it, its just not what xda is about. Even so, I will ask a gsm'r does this tool seem to perform only zerg-rush, desense and resense like on cdma side? Or does nothing work, differences? It does not work for root cdma side, unroot fails, and the methodology is different so I doubt it would s-off on our side. I will contact the developer to specify partial functionality with WFS but no s-off (upon gsm analysis confirmation). Discuss.

I explained why this thread should be removed and also took the opportunity to talk about other annoying habits. I think it's pretty clear I wasn't referring to l00k, so I really don't understand why he replied that way.
It seems that he accepted the general criticism as it was directed only to him.

I apologised in my initial post to GSM users but I wont apologise for my reaction to what was in no way a supportive and useful reply from Migualca. In fact its the most annoying thing anyone has ever said to me since joining these forums backl in 2006. Tact is a wonderful thing (jk)
Anyway this was posted to help and I genuinely do hope you guys get your software S-OFF. I've still got my blacklisted wildfire S and would be willing to rip its guts out testing tools like this to help.

Guys, sry but pls stop it.
As much as i can see both of you told things that could be spelled another way
Miguelca i know, your pissed (sry for the bad spelling, but i think it hits the point) on, because you thought there finally is a way for gsm users to s-off their device without xtc and you where disappointed once more, but because of this it shouldn't be delteted, it should be marked like others with cdma only. I know it's hard and i also know you done much for the community, but try to be happy for others that they got one more option, i'm sure there will come a way for gsm users finally.
And 100k, sry but your rudness wasn't correct and your really should apology for it, there are other ways to tell such things than such a bad language.
At this point Miguelca is right, you should bring more respect to others, if he tells something that you think it's not true or should be handled another way, express it in a normal way not like you did. It's much more constructive and others can accept it or/and discuss it with you, but like you did they get angry and things get badder not better, so pls be patient next time and tell what you want to tell as smooth as you can.

Don't worry tectas. This is definitely my last post about this bad soap-opera.
l00k doesn't care to reread my first post and doesn't want to admit that there is a part he must have overlooked or misunderstood. Some people want to be always on top, even when they have no arguments and need to use rude language. Just one simple conclusion: l00k wrote 212 posts since September 2006 and got 9 thanks. I'm here since June 2010, wrote 114 posts (before this one) and got 51 thanks.
I rest my case.

Sorry for calling you a **** miguelca it wasn't very nice and I should have elaborated a little more as to why your comment and comments like them annoy me so much. I don't spend much time in the wfs section anymore I saw the article in an rss feed from another android site and thought about you guys. great site, but...

this site is absolutely fantastic. it has been very informative and helped me alot. but, i feel like although it is packed with knowledge, it is not easy to find what your looking for. nor does it really explain what capabilities you have with rooting your device. i hate iphones, but the sites that i used when i had one were very user friendly. am i missing something? and my phone (lg optimus f6) doesnt even have its own section, and ive had to dig dig dig to find anything that is phone specific and got lucky and found a kitkat mini custom ROM on androidforums. but i feel like i dont have a easy time finding much on the xda forums for my phone, and CWM or any rom repository doesnt have my phone or support it. i do love this web forum, and if im missing something, please tell me so i can better navigate the site and learn more so i can move forward. never stop learning

Your device apparently doesn't have a large enough user base, here at XDA in any case, to warrant a separate thread. You aren't missing anything tho. Unfortunately, it is what it is.
I guess I feel like people are doing a lot more with there phones and I'd like to do more, but I'm lacking the knowledge of what I can do...done a few things and I'm super happy with it all...just kinda wanna do more.
@c0yle_diesel, if you ever can't find your way or need help locating something on XDA, the guys over in the XDA Assist forum are here to help. Just make a thread in the forum I linked with your question, and they will point you in the right direction.

No it's not at all.
Lots of people here willing to help, it's just hard to find someone who has knowledge of your specific phone. It's not anything XDA members try, just not a lot of people have that device or know its specifics.
Do you know what would really help? Now that you found a ROM for your phone, create a specific thread, post about how to flash the files, any problems you had flashing it, etc. Then the next person who comes around with a LG Optimus F6 will be able to find information about it!
pros of having a known device always include a large developer/community support. cons of having a less known device of course is the other way around. but, this is xda .. its very impossible that there will only be 5 people who uses same device as you, you should be able to find ways on whatever things you wanted to. may not be rom/device specific.

Rightfull efforts should not be taken as spams, no matter how much we have faith in the future of it..
The companies build their plans about what (not) to give their customers, not only over the demanding people but also the un-demanding people.
So, do demand. That won't kill your cat.
Just a suggestion, I would rename this topic to "Please sign the petition to LG, to unlock the bootloader for all G4 variants"
....and unlock bootloader for all but WITHOUT loose warranty !!! it's really possible ???!!!
And they can make this effort because it's daylight robbery ,scandalous, to buy a phone with a very big problem of hardware ("bootloop&dead" illness)
mine is still work but i sympathize with persons who have had this serious problem...

I'd edit that template though...
Dear Jun-Ho Cho,
We've started a petition on Change.org in an attempt to gain the attention of your company. We have gained over 1900+ signatures in less than 7 months. There are many of us who feel it would be very beneficial to have the option to unlock the bootloaders on our G4 mobile devices. I understand you offer the option on one European model. We would like to respectfully request the option to unlock the bootloader on all models. This would benefit the development of your phone fiercely!
I am aware the results of your sales for the G4 are far below the projected sales volume. I can guarantee, the unlocking of the bootloaders would boost your sales significantly.
Please Mr. Cho, consider our request.
Respectfully Yours,
*****YOUR NAME HERE*****

I respect the forum but this topic same as many other..So useless...
Look :http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/petition-to-lg-to-unlock-g4-bootloaders-t3142782
Guys keep in mind!!!! Only chans devs.LG never help ......
But good look and hello spam topic....(sorry)
I do know we are a minority here on XDA, compared to the whole mobile phone market. However I also know that many of us are asked when a friend or a relative tries to decide to a new device. So we actually have the power to influence enough amount of customers and shape the market. I, for one, have been doing this for many years. Now, there is no single person in my life with a Samsung device. I have talked them into other devices.
I know that this is a technical forum and needs to be well-organized. But in this case, just to show the power of us, customers, a few extra topic wouldn't hurt anyone.
I remember the times when companies backing off to "ok, we will honor the warranty because it is a manufacturing fault, so it has nothing to do with your device being rooted" and giving new phones to the rooted users couple years ago. And the reason behind it was the topics here, on XDA, about many people having the same problem.
So, long story short, showing how we are feeling about our devices and their companies (and also carriers sometimes) is necessary in the way I see things.
I think, more power to topics like these everywhere.
Whether you think it helps or not, switching off a light bulb that you are not using in your house, our sending a dollar somewhere in the world when you can spare it, makes a difference.
It's those people who start something that eventually save us all.
Onward.
