[Q] Help needed! rooting

Hello everyone
I am looking for some guidance as I have a stock DHD 2.3 (freshly updated) If there's someone who can tell me the steps and eventually the links because I don't know the order of the rooting process nor where to find the tools I shall hit the thanks button madly and hope I won't end with a big digital brick..
also any recommended ROMS?

Well, you need to downgrade first DOWNGRADE LINK.
Then after radio S-OFF (you dont have to, but it'll be much better) you can install ROM Manager and flash CWM recovery.
The CWM recovery will allow you to flash new Custom ROMs to your device.
You can then go back up to 2.3, or do whatever you want really.
I can't suggest any ROM to you, because everyone has their own taste in ROMs. I flashed a Stock-ROOTED 2.3 ROM and modified it to my liking using many different MODs out there.
But the android development section contains many different ROMs.
EDIT: CWM recovery will add many advantages to your phone. One big advantage is backing up your phones current ROM (aka Nandroid).
If anything goes wrong while trying to flash other ROMs or MODs, you can just simply restore your backup (and if you know where the problem is, you can restore only part of the backup). This feature is what made me install (or flash) CWM recovery.
And plus, it makes flashing ROMs and other stuff so easyyyyyy!!!

This forum isn't here to hold peoples hands to get them through rooting processes etc. All information is gathered in quite simple guides that are available for everyone to read so we won't have to explain over and over again to the thousands of new users how to do everything. Your question have been asked countless times and you would have found multiple threads with everything explained thouroughly if you used the search function (read the rules). But instead you created a new thread and made it harder for the next person to find information because this forum is filling up with a lot of similar threads that could have been avoided if people spent some time searching the forum. I don't mean to be offensive, but you have to be able to do something on your own if you want to enter the world of custom roms etc. New users should do some researching so that they know what they're getting in to and not just jump in head first and hope that somebody does everything for them

I'm sorry if I sounded harsh, I didn't mean to. Just tried to make my point clear. (The fact that 3 or 4 similar threads was started just today might also have something to do with it ). I wish you all the luck with your project

now I have a question: regarding the goldcard, I don't understand if I have to get a different card from my actual 8gb I'm using, make it a gold card and then switch back to my non-gold former card, or I have to use my phone all the time with this new goldcard??

I use a different card generally it is only used to bypass security... so does not need to be used all the time .... if you use your normal card backup it up as you may trash

I tried to get Visionary+ but it has Trojan virus... anywhere else safer?!
and I don't get it, after permaroot is S-OFF (radio s-off) and after that what?! after my phone is S-OFF I install RomManager or is there sth in between?

well, after S-OFF, you install ROM Manager, then choose the first option from ROM Manager ('flash clockworkMod Recovery').
--ROM Manager and CWM recovery is not a MUST, but is needed to flash ROM and MODs to your device.
let me make it clear...
radio S-OFF is to allow you to flash new radios(if you dont know what a radio is, search ).
ENG S-OFF allows you to do more extreme things and can get you out of a 'nearly bricked' device (so i've heard). It makes your phone VERY flexible and allows you to modify nearly everything!
^--this is to my knowledge--^
anyway, this isnt needed to be rooted, it just increases the amount of thing you can do with your phone.
CWM recovery flashes over your stock HTC Recovery. Its also not a must, but also allows MUCH more flexibility.

Ignore that virus warning, it'd be your AV identifying it as a rootkit, which oddly enough it is. If you can add it to your whitelist or disable your AV whilst downloading/moving it from your PC to your phone.

thanks for clearing the things for me.. as for the link, there's the virus.. This is what my Nod32 says.. I've searched on other sites to download but still the same..

[PRO] Flash Custom Kernel + ROM and O/C

Hi all, im a newbie here, i bought my Xperia PRO a month ago, and rooted it on Android 4, using a great tutorial in this forum and thanks to other members i got it right and rooted it in my 4 first days of use. But, i now want to upgrade to a Custom ROM and use a custom kernel , to get my phone to a new generation.
And my question now is, how can i flash a Custom ROM (i was thinking of CM9 stable when it comes out), and flash a custom Kernel with it (i was thinking of Ultima V1.4) and then keep my old applications, or most of them.
I have CWM Recovery 5.5.0.4 installed using X-Parts , and also Titanium Backup Pro . My Bootloader is still locked and i have flashtool and all drivers for my phone installed on my PC.
I would be very thankful to anyone that is able to help me do all these, or if needed, recommend me a better Custom ROM and Kernel, and then explain how i can O/C my phone too, and keep if possible most of my apps.
Also, please tell me if i have to install anything else, or if im missing anything.

Hi mate,
First of all, I take it that you know that you have to unlock your boot loader to install custom kernels and some custom rom's. Like CM9 and 10.
ROM Install Instructions
There are normally instructions that are in the first or second post that explain how to install. If there aren't any, I've copied the instructions from maxio1998, so all credits go to him:
1. Download .zip file and place it on SD card
2. Download and flash kernel you like (or not, if you have locked bootloader)
3. Download WiFi Modules of chosen kernel and place them on sdcard
4. Go to CWM Recovery.
5. Wipe everything! (This means everything but the SD card, or you'll use all you files)
6. Flash zip with ROM
7. Flash zip with WiFi modules
8. In CWM go to "Advance" and fix permissions.
9. Reboot and enjoy [~xDevilCharged~] and PentaPowerful~ Jelly Sandwich!

Kernel Install instructions
To keep it simple, heres a program that doomed151 made. It flashes the .img without having to use command prompt: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1551073
Right, onto keeping your apps. As you need to wipe everything to install a new ROM, you can't keep your apps without backing them up. Titanium backup is the best option, and you've bought it, even better :victory: The wipe will not delete the backups from the SD Card so just place them somewhere on there.
You can use any overclocking app from the market as long as you let it use superuser or supersu. Don't recommend passing 1.3, it gets very hot and the cpu will burn out quicker. (Yeah, I know i've overclocked mine to 1.5, but it gets very hot and runs out of battery quickly)
As you've already got CWM installed, you'd be better doing a full nandroid backup, just in case you decide to revert back to stock, you have all your apps installed
Unfortunately, I'm using the arc, so I can't recommend any kernels or ROM's to you. Sorry.

Also, I've searched enough, to believe that cyanogen mods, are the best and most recommended custom ROMs, about the kernel, I aint so sure but ill see what other user's might say.

If i remember right, CM9.1 (stable) has not yet been released for iyokan (MK16i). So that means i have to wait. Also, i can flash a ROM and use a kernel other than the ROM's default one, right? (i want CM9.1 with Ultima V1.4 Kernel)
And one more thing, i have moved all apps to the SD, what will happen to the files there? Will they remain?

I think that you have to use the cm kernel (fxp kernel). Could be wrong though, not really looked into it.
Any apps that you have installed on your phone will be deleted. You have to back them up and then restore them. It doesn't matter where they are installed

Sorry for late reply, just look up the thread again.
Best thing you could do is ask a question the Ultima Kernel thread and hope you get a response. But I think that it will be for stock only, (I think they need different things in them....) but im not a dev, I don't have the patience..... :laugh:
You might have to flash google apps. Just use CWM in the custom kernel you choose. They will be a link in the bottom of the first post to the google apps download.
No need to flash another baseband or owt like that. When you flash the full zip of CM9 in CWM it will add and edit everything you need.
CWM from X-Parts will not have any effect on anything after you flash a different kernel. It will disappear like it was never there.

I did it, and flahsed the kernel and all that stuff, now i reinstalled all my apps , and O/Ced at 1.2Ghz , and everything is nice.
But, working on android stuff, makes you want more and more, and as you learn better, that makes you want even more, and now i want to mod another phone.!
I've learned a lot from your help and the help of other members of this forum, and i think i am now ready to "mod" more phone, just for fun.
I already managed to flash an x10 mini with miniCM7 and flash a nAa Kernel, and also flash another x10 mini pro with miniCM7, and probably today ill mod another friend's x10 mini. And later two x8.
Learning, is great, thank you all.
EDIT: I also found out that everything you need is Flashtool, its the best tool out there, it flashes, it installs Busybox, recoveries, it unlocks bootloaders, it roots, it flashes kernels, everything. .Ok you might also need s1tool to check about the semc lock and if you unlocked the bootloader.

I know, I'm the same. I'll want to go and buy about 10 different android devices just to have a play around and mod them. It's always nice to play around with 2 android devices (Please come back in stock Nexus 7 )

(I had to use multiple programs, my bootloader could only be unlocked my test point. Was locked to T-Mobile. Best use of flashtool is when you've bricked it and need to get it back to stock )

Yeah, i unlocked my Bootloader using testpoint method too, so i wouldnt get any bricks with FOTA updates. And, i also used to be into such electronic stuff.

well, from what I've read, in ur Xperia u can simply find out the bootloader status by dialing *#*#7378423#*#* service info> configuration
rooting status
bootloader unlock allow:Yes(if locked)
bootloader unlock:yes(if unlocked)
m havin locked bootloader, so do reply with ur status and confirm this to me and evryone else

I am not sure, but i believe, that either you have locked or unlocked bootlader, it will always say "Bootloader Unlock Allowed: Yes , or No if its not allowed).
I aint sure, because in CM9.1 i dial it, and i cant get to the Service Settings, so i cannot be sure.
And, as i've found out, you can be sure if you have locked or unlocked bootloader, by running S1tool, and pressing "IDENTIFY" , which will tell you to connect your phone in flashmode (phone off, connect USB while pressing back) , and it will give something like "loader version xXXXXXX" , where the capital X , are numbers, and the small x, is either "R" or "r". If it is a small "r" , that means its unlocked, if its a capital "R" its locked.
If you want to unlock your bootloader in the Xperia Pro, just tell me , and im sure i'll help you out, with a detailed tutorial, without having any problems.

first i want to say i'm glad to become a member of this community, im always read threads on this site
well, well, i'm here today because i have many, may questions
i'm now actually with the Nitro HD (P930) with stock ICS, a few days ago can finally root it, and installed rom manager, installed CWM, but when i reboot it on restart in recovery my phone makes this:
secure booting error cause boot certification verify
so i have to remove the battery and turn it back, i want to try it on with some custom roms and i been reading about, but dont know yet if i need to do the Unbricking Solution to do so or what

oh!!! and by the way, my GF have a chinesse phone: (the star b930) so i want to know if there is anything i can do with it (install a custom recovery, install a diferent rom) the phone is already root (im sorry about the double answer it is because i dont know where i can ask with this one)

for your first question , you cant flash custom recovery on stock ics becouse boot loader is locked

[HELP NEEDED] Confusion when following the How-To Root the M8S (M8QL_UL)

I have been trying very hard to grasp on this myself, and not post a thread like this but I'm afraid my head is spinning and I'm hoping someone here will be kind enough to help me.
I have owned an M8S for a while and would like to gain root access (mainly so I can use link2sd and expand storage space). I followed many links and threads carefully, but I am nervous to begin any process as the instructions are... vague, I guess. There are many of you who disagree with me I'm sure, but please be patient with me.

I have rooted several android devices before, and I've never been very confused by the process, but this one has left me lost.

I don't have the M8S, but the process looks straightforward (similar to M8, as well as most fairly recent HTC devices):
1) Unlock bootloader via HTCDev.com (go to the website, and its pretty self-explantory)
2) Use fastboot to flash TWRP custom recovery
3) Flash SuperSU and Busybox using TWRP
I'd also add a step before 3 above, use TWRP to make a backup of the stock ROM. Once you have that backed up, anything that happens from step 3 is reversible by restoring the backup.
In fact, everything in the process is totally reversible by RUU, with the exception that the bootloader flag will only every say RELOCKED instead of LOCKED.
Is there a particular question, or step you have a problem with.

Just read and learn as much as you can before doing anything. Don't do anything that isn't form a current, reputable source. Do those things, and you will be fine.

portachking, I am very new to rooting and all that follows it. I would be very grateful if you post back your experiences when you have time, with the challenges you met (if any) and how you solved them...
I read from this page that "When the phone is rooted in changes to the phone are reset on restart". Is this the case for you as well?

Hey guys, i am also new to rooting and have read a lot about it already. I already managed to unlock the bootloader and use twrp to make a full backup. Only from thus point on, i dont know how to actually root it without flashing a custom rom.

2nd Link in the top post describes it (with link to SuperSU).
To root, just flash SuperSU 2.67 in TWRP.

Thanks for the reply. Then i must have missed something. I will try it out this weekend.

It didnt work.
I did everything exactly as described. I have twrp, open it in fastboot with cmd. When i am in twrp, i clicked install, and installed the supersu beta zip and busybox zip. Still i dont have root access.

I tried it multiple times, from my internal storage and sd card. I have bootloader unlocked, i use fastboot boot twrp version 2.8.6.0 if i remember correctly (not at home at the moment) and clicked install. Then i made sure i install the zip super su and busybox file from the root of the sd card, and tried internal storage as well. From that screen, it seems it installs correctly, but when i reboot and use a rootchecker app, it says im not rooted.
Can someone please help me? Ive read up on lots of posts and watched youtube vids of twrp rooting to see if i did it correctly.

Then i made sure i install the zip super su and busybox file from the root of the sd card, and tried internal storage as well. From that screen, it seems it installs correctly, but when i reboot and use a rootchecker app, it says im not rooted.

Please confirm what version SuperSU you used.
When flashing SuperSU, it should have given you the option of "systemless root" or "traditional root" (or something along those lines).
If you picked systemless root, it probably won't show up on root checker apps. Seeing as Link2SD is your main reason for root, have you checked that the app works or not?

Newbie! Zenfone 2 now rooted...now what!

Hi all,
I have a zenfone 2 that I have just rooted....so now what?
Basically I wanted to optimise my phone so I am able to disable annoying notifications which are greyed out (although since rooting and checking this it still greyed out) I want to remove bloatware and I would actually like to customise my own android system, starting from a 'vanilla' base where I can build it up myself.
I have also read that I need to install a android recovery programme on asap after rooting.
So sorry about this but I really do need 'stupid' instructions as using hi tech words will just baffle me. lol
I have played around with computers in the past and learned about them so this is the phone stage now!

Hi Kerry,
First thing you should now do after rooting your device would be flashing a custom recovery that is specific to your device (make sure your devices boot loader is unlocked first). This will allow you to make a backup of everything just in case anything were to go wrong, flash custom ROMs and useful zips. You can pick your favorite custom recovery such as Team Win Recovery Projects custom recovery (TWRP), Clock Work Mods custom recovery (CWM) or Philz Touch recovery based off of CWM although personally I would recommended twrp.
There are multiple ways to do this: Using the TWRP/CWM recovery installer from the play store or the more complicated way of flashing it from your computer. If you were to choose to install TWRP from their app on the play store (grant it root permission) you can select your device from the supported device section within the app, pick the latest recovery, hit the install button and let the app work its magic. If all works correctly you can now reboot to recovery and you will see TWRP is installed. Now you should create a backup to be on the safe side and you're good to go!
To best optimize your device I would recommend installing a custom ROM (look up custom ROMs for the Zenfone 2) and install the zip through recovery. (make sure to pick the right ROM for your device and version otherwise you may soft brick your smartphone) Now with a custom ROM you can better optimize your device and fully customize it to your liking. Make sure to look up custom ROM installation instructions for your device for better detail.
As far as removing system apps/bloatware you can use a "root app delete" tool from the play store but be careful what you remove as some applications are required!
Make sure to take your time and be careful when attempting any of these things and be careful what you modify! Just remember that no question is a stupid question as we all have to start somewhere!

I also went ahead and checked the TWRP app and the Zenfone 2 is supported so it looks like your good to go. All devices have a different method for unlocking bootloader (some don't even have locked bootloaders) but this is an official bootloader unlocking method for the Zenfone 2 from Asus itself. I suggest following its directions and you should be able to unlock it this way.

Ok I followed the link but now I am confused. I have version ww_2.20.40.63_201......
Apparently I need a later version. What started off with just adding an APP means me doing other things before I even get to that point (hence the confusion! lol)
I never updated the phone via OTA as I was told it would invalidate my warranty and also I have killed a phone before using that so can you walk me through please...if you have the time....or could I just check if I have it unlocked already??
I haven't even gotten to the part where I create a backup...tee hee

Hi sorry for the late reply, I'm in Canada so it was 2am when I was last talking to you so I went to bed haha. Anyway as far as unlocking the Zenfone 2's bootloader I wouldn't have experience unfortunately as I'm using a Nexus 5. The easiest way to go about this now would be to go to your device specific forum and find a way to unlock it there.
The following way to unlock the bootloader requires you have ADB installed on your PC. This is a guide for installation on Windows :

BTW as you mentioned "updating may invalidate your warranty" things like rooting, installing a custom OS, unlocking the bootloader, installing a custom recovery and other things like that all (in most cases) void your warranty.
