Is there any downside to using CM12 over TouchWiz? - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I bought this tablet a few days ago and was very disappointed with the lag especially in all the browsers.
Is there any negatives to installing CM11 or 12?
Is battery life better or worse?
What features do I lose?
Does it affect 3g/4g reception (Australia)
Also does iron rom get rid of lag? And does it affect battery life?
I use the tablet for work and the main apps I use for work is the browser, email app, camera app and gallery app.
Only things I've done to this tablet is rooted to get app settings from xposed and greenify.

I was wondering about some of what you asked also. I noticed the annoying lag/stuttering in web browsers using the stock firmware.

Negatives installing cm12- Lowers chances of getting defective hardware fixed on your tablet. If your tablet works fine then your good.
Battery- Battery does get better.. Probably not much but it does. See my screenshot. But standy battery times is amazing!
Features you lose- samsung stuffs. Ex, multiwindow, fingerprint scanner and more.
3g connection- Cm12 does not work on LTE devices and only wifi models.
Iron rom- No lag or its smoother in my opinion.
Iron rom battery life- Its awesome! You can tweak the kernel settings for more battery life without decreasing performance.

Screen shots of battery on cm12. I own the SMT800. White background=cm12 Iron rom= Blue background

Using the stock rom, I found that if I disabled the Javascript in the browser it is much smoother scrolling. Although that causes problems for some websites. If I keep the tablet I'll probably end up trying one of the custom roms. My tablet is refurbished for a good price, but it looks brand new.

[Q] Thinking about getting an SIII, are there any issues?

I'm having a lot of data issues with my HTC One S on T-Mobile US, so I'm thinking about getting an SIII. I can either do a warranty exchange on my One S but the SIII looks like it can outperform the One S so here I am.
I wanted to know if there have been any issues with the SIII? From the various threads I've seen, there doesn't appear to be any but I just wanted to ask current users. I'd like some input on:
stock ROM performance (although I will root eventually)
data connectivity (data network and wifi)
camera performance
battery performance
GPS performance
how your root experience was (easy, difficult, issues laden?)
any gotchas?
Also, what's the difference between the 2 development threads? Why is one called Original and the other is not?
Many thanks

stock ROM performance (although I will root eventually)
A. Amazing! The new touchwiz is smooth and very stable, it's partially the reason why I always go back to stock based roms.
data connectivity (data network and wifi)
A. It depends on where you live but I haven't had any issues with data at all, it's reasonably faster than it was on my Galaxy S2 so no complaints there!
camera performance
A. I think the camera is one of the best on the market, photo's are very sharp and clear from my experience.
battery performance
A. The battery on this device is good, I can make it through a day easily with moderate use.
GPS performance
A. I don't use GPS very much so I can't give you a good answer to that one but I haven't heard any complaints about it.
how your root experience was (easy, difficult, issues laden?)
A. My root experience was great, if you had a Galaxy S2 and rooted it, it's basically the same thing. If not it's still very basic if you follow the instructions correctly.
any gotchas?
A. Not sure what this means, if your talking about issues or something like that then I have one:
- The device can get warm from time to time when using data for long periods of time, other then that I haven't had any issues with phone.
I'd definitely recommend this to anyone looking to get a new phone!
Only problem I have is it warms up from heavy data use from time to time. Stock ROM was wonderful but I finally flashed cm10 last night to see how it is. I couldn't believe it but the phone became even faster Haha I highly recommend this phone

Stock ROM: Nearly perfect. It's fluid. It's fast, it's useful. And you can switch most things on or off without rooting. You can get a newly Aosp experience without root.
Data: As good as any other recent phone. Data completely relies on where you live. The s3 will not give you any problems.
Battery: Good or very good. The phone lasts about 20 hours with moderate usage. It can easily hit 2 days with light usage. Jelly bean currently has no bugs but it does drain the battery slightly more than ics. Expect 17 hours average on jelly bean.
Gps: Best in class. Locks instantly, consistently within 20 seconds cold boot.
Rooting: Rooting is easy and takes 3 minutes.
CAMERA: Same as the iPhone 4s but i do believe the software is better. Pictures are some of the best for a smartphone. Only a few phones best it but it is not by much.
Other: Phone is ready for wireless charging of you want to solder 2 wires on it. Also, i have heard reports that the screen cracks on some drops so be warned and careful.
Overall. Super fast, super reliable, has bugless jelly bean,

I have the sgs3 and I absolutely love it. Was on stock form late July till about 2 weeks ago and it seemed to perform just fine. I'm not huge on the TouchWiz interface of the past but this one wasn't so bad. Was never at a loss for power even though we didn't get the Integra (le sigh). Here in Chicago the data is always smooth but I spend some time in rural WI, so up there it could be better but that is more local then phone performance related. The Camera was outstanding. Girlfriend has the HTC One S and she was a little jealous of the camera by comparison. I had a very smooth root transition and I did it about a week after I got the phone, now I can only imagine it will be smoother for you. Flashed to the cm10 nightlies and I have had a few issues but nothing that was major. Not to mention Cyanogen himself is developing on the T999 which is awesome. Only issues that I would be aware of is that when I rooted my phone there were some issues with people losing their IMEI... but that has mostly been cleared up if you search around the forums. I think it had something to do with people rooting for the international version instead of the US Carrier version. Not sure but I didn't encounter it. Best phone I have ever had. Like it even more then my old G2 that I refused to get rid of till it finally crashed.
Please don't get it.
The only issue I have had is the dirty looks from Apple fan boys
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Stock works just perfect its stable and such however i notice that when data is turned on the phone gets a little bit hot but nothing too serious...
Battery life is okay 22hs unplugged and 3h30minutes screen on time ..
I dont see any major issues camera is really good in bright area but when it gets very dark whit no flash camera is taking pics whit lot of noise but its very responsive ..

You should be proud.. that you have a phone that doesn't break apart in the box during shipping.
My first S III had a dent in the metal beneath the battery and the second one had a significant scratch in the speaker grill. My third one was just assembled loosely or the pieces didn't fit together well so there were gaps in the seams under the battery cover and all three of these had poorly calibrated displays because white images appeared to be slightly yellow at times so I wouldn't poke fun at Apple if I were you...
4th one's the charm though. I'm happy with this one.

The GS3 is the best phone I have ever had. Don't have any problems. Only thing I miss is no FM radio.
Yes it leaks.
Best phone period.
Well, until the next big thing arrives
-stock ROM performance (although I will root eventually)
Rooting doesn't necessarily mean that you have to switch ROMs, but anyways, stock ROM seems to use a bit more battery than lets say CyanogenMod but other than that, I enjoy the motion controls on the stock rom. I always have better bars than my friends and everything works like a charm
- data connectivity (data network and wifi)
wifi and data both work well. one time I had a problem where data wasn't working that well but i fixed it by reverting back to stock kernel.
-camera performance
i love taking pictures with the camera. the features are pretty enjoyable too. my aunt really loves the "beauty" feature on the camera where it clears up blemishes and makes you look really nice 8D really enjoy being able to take pictures while recording video as well.
- battery performance
typical day I can get 4 hours of screen time in the full day. that is with some light gaming, lots of texting and some social networking. pretty good for a heavy user. my old phone nexus s, would always get low battery and I would have to watch my usage.
- GPS performance
before i switched carriers, I had unlimited data on mobilicity so that worked really well with the GPS. I could always locate myself and sometimes when I wasn't too sure about the area, i could pull up google maps and it would find where I am within seconds.
- how your root experience was (easy, difficult, issues laden?)
rooting the s3 was pretty simple. It just involved using Odin to flash a custom recovery and then installing superuser. it was a lot easier than my nexus s where I had to use adb and fastboot
- any gotchas?
there is the occasional lag and glitch here and there but then again after rooting you can't expect everything to run perfectly. hopefully you get the s3 and enjoy

TikTak vs CM 11 vs Gummy

For anyone that has tried the latest versions of the 4.4 roms, which are you finding to be the most stable, best battery life, etc. I am currently on the final newtoroot 4.3/5.5 rom and have been ecstatic with everything about it.. but I am going on vacation for about a week and would like a new 4.4 toy to play with. Are any of them comparable to my current ROM, and do they have any big issues I should know about before I upgrade? I currently end the day with about 20-40% battery and GPS works perfectly. My only issue is that sometimes the wireless stops working even though it says its still connected, and I have to toggle wifi or airplane mode to fix it.
I am especially worried about GPS and battery life since I will be away from home, but I'll be keeping a copy of this rom around just in case.
The last AOSP roms I tried were Vanir and Pacman, about a month and a half ago. They both seemed to have force closes on random apps fairly often (especially Dolphin browser) and the battery life was decent, but not nearly as good as the sense based roms. Is this still the case with 4.4?

Ran nusense until last week now using 11/16 nightly of vanir. Battery and performance are way better now. Dolphin browser is a bloated piece of crap and it spies on you, I'm having trouble understanding why anyone still uses it.

I'm running tiKtaK for the past day after running BoneStock for a few weeks. The switch away from Sense is always a nice change, but I think I'm going back to BoneStock. I don't understand it, but I feel that I get better battery and signal out of Bonestock...
TikTak is pretty good, but sense-based ROMs seem to give me the best battery life. But if you're set on AOSP, TikTak is your best bet. Santod makes some great ROMs

We have an extremely fast phone, whatever bloat you may perceive doesn't affect the browsing experience. In fact I would say it has a lot of great features that other browsers don't have. Chrome spies on you as well, I'm not really worried about that.
That said, I would love to use Chrome, but until it supports addons I will continue to use Dolphin. I have no issues with it at all on sense based roms, and from what I've read, most of the AOSP roms have fixed the app crashes at this point too.

[Q] VZW GN : Will a 4.4.2 ROM really make it better?

I've got Verizon Galaxy Nexus, rooted but running stock 4.2.2. I now use it on wifi or as a backup.
My biggest complaint is battery life. If it hadn't been for the battery life, I wouldn't have gone to the Moto X (which I really like, BTW).
Will a 4.4.2 rom, CM11 or similar, make a difference in battery life? Will it bring me some other magical benefits?

No this phone blows end of story

I would have to disagree. I have had my GNex for 2 years now and it is still running extremely well. Your best bet would be to take some time looking over all the potential custom ROMs and Kernels and coming to a combination you would like. Battery life will be different for every user and will depend on what you do on your phone.
to get good battery life on Gnex, turn on airplane mode, and toggle on WiFi.
that's what I do, and I removed bip.apk cuz I was tired of seeing it under running apps along with mms apk, I can get over 3hrs screen on time on my gnex doing this(toro though not on any network just using Wi-Fi with airplane mode on)

Yes, that's what I do now. I was hoping kitkat would get me up to 4 or 5 hours. But it seems kitkat doesn't make a difference. I'll just stick with 4.2.
Thanks
I am running the latest version of Shiny rom (4.4.2) with Fancy kernel r48 and get outstanding battery life and reliable usage. YMMV
I am presently running playful gods unofficial cm 11 and love it! This phone has never run so good and the battery life is very very good compared to jb or ICS ROMs.
Yes, CM11 makes the phone useable and by far better than any of the previous releases or even stock. CM10.2 is unfixed bugs with airplane mode and 3g/4g hand offs. It constantly drops the data connections and frequently requires reboots to get it back. Interestingly enough, it will be in 4g mode but there will but no IPs will be assigned. It is cm10.x bugs, it never worked properly. CM9 was rock solid, but CM11 makes it faster and has better battery life, but not much. Most of the battery problems are from screen and the 4g radio, they are battery hogs and no software can fix that. Turn you brightness down as far as possible and use wifi as much as possible (also disable bluetooth, nfc and 4g if you can do without).
Yeppers
I was on a stock rooted 4.2 forever. When my GNex started really bogging down I decided to try a some new roms.
I'm on C-Rom 4.4.2 and performance has been significantly better. I've had a few hiccups, but it's been a very solid daily driver.
So, my opinion is, "Yes. Big improvement."

How's real world performance on the G4?

Hello, I'm pretty interested in upgrading to G4 from my S4, but one major problem I've heard of regarding the G4 is the sub-par benchmark results. Sub-par benchmarks doesn't neccesarily mean bad performance though, so I want to ask you guys who own this phone: is the real world performance good and is there any occasional lag or stuttering?
Thanks
Good performance in "real world". I upgraded my S4 to the G4. Very good screen, excelent camera, LG UI better than Touchwizz for me. The sound from the speaker is nice, but with headphones is not so good.
I too upgraded from a S4 to a G4 and to be honest Im not quite happy at all. The phone has a very nice looking screen, the camera is excellent and I get some good battery life out of it but to me Lollipop is a piece of crap. I rooted mine and have Xposed installed and to this date I havent found a way to leave my phone as I want. Sometimes it does things that I dont want it to do like the screen not turning off after 30 seconds and staying on until I push the powert button. I havent found what app is cousing it or if it is Android itself.
I have the CTT tweak and I still do get lag sometimes so I have to force close the previously opened apps. If I could only install KitKat on it... oh my god!!!
Good performance.. But expect low battery performance.. That's because of the large screen..

D851 worth getting today?

Hey guys, I'm not a must have flagship device or a crazy spender when it comes to phones. I tend to lean towards features, and developer support when it comes to phones. I'm still using the LG Optimus G e970 that I bought 2 years ago, and I think it's time for a change. The D851 has everything I'm looking for at a decent price, but I'm worried now after reading so many people are having boot loops, wifi issues, etc. Would it be a bad decision to buy this phone since it seems like it's facing a bunch of issues due to aging.
Thanks guys!
I just bought one last week. Refurbished. So far, so good. Still early to judge but this phone is so fast and smooth.
I am running stock with Marshmallow 6.0. I usually root but really I have no need to right now.
I got a mint used one with zero lemon 9k mah battery for 120, it's stock 6.0.1 rooted and debloated and works fantastic.
Thanks guys! I made the purchase with an extra battery!

In my opinion, best phone for the price and features. I have had mine for nearly two years and it is still going strong. Just got a smart circle case with wireless charging and really happy with it. Developer support is also very good. I tried to run the Tmobile stock 6.0 but it was sluggish and Wifi calling could never connect. Using multirom, I can boot into LP for wifi calling if I need it. Fulmics is my main rom and I could not be happier with the features and performance.

Bluetooth is working perfectly with the stock Fulmics kernel for me. I had tried a different kernel and it broke Bluetooth so I reverted back to avoid issues.
Everyone keeps talking about Fulmics.

How is the battery life?
My local store has one still BNIB collecting dust on the shelf, I didn't find out till after I got their last BNIB G4 and they didn't have any current price for it as corporate stopped updating that price list. I'm sort of thinking maybe I should have got it vs my G4 because of potential bootloop issues but my G4 was manufactured in April 2016 which is apparently after LG fixed the hardware problem. We'll see. I have half a mind to call them up tomorrow and see if I can get a current price on it.
I had a G3 on Verizon but didn't have it long enough to really make it shine. VZW installs so much freaking bloat that its kinda impossible to fairly judge a phone sometimes. Spec wise its honestly pretty close to the G4 although my G4 out of the box is the fastest phone I've had on an OEM rom and its not even close.
Definitely. I have had mine (bought it used) for 7 months now and have had no issues. I would recommend rooting and flashing a custom rom. Makes the phone so much better. It has the removable battery which is great, especially since the battery life is so-so. I can get through a whole day with it with moderate use so I guess it isn't that bad.
It's still a good phone, but look into the moto g4, double LTE speed capabilities. and double charging speed capabilities. Gotta keep up with the newest features

LG G3 vs. G4 vs. G5
After watching dozens of YouTube videos making comparisons with these three phones, the G3 is still a great phone. The fact that you can buy one new very cheaply now is a plus. I am running Marshmallow now on mine with all of the latest updates. Stock 100%, but rooted and many of the apps frozen with Titanium Backup Pro. I NEVER have an issue with my phone. Battery life is excellent, I never drop calls, Wi-Fi calling works perfectly with my cable provider's router. The G4 and G5 look great but the "new improvements" are minimal at best. The newer models will cost you hundreds more, but the bells and whistles just are not there from what I have seen. An extra physical button or two would not sway me to upgrade this phone.

you can root 30D with Kingroot to get temporary root. Then use this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-lg-g3/development/stock-d851-30d-kdz-flashable-zips-imgs-t3367371
Pretty good.
Phone is pretty good. My main criticisms are the phones heat issue and rather dull screen. I haven't run custom ,don't know how much that helps.
Can anyone comment on what you would lose going custom ROM? Currently running stock Marshmallow 30D.

As for heating issues -- only one thing will make the biggest difference: lowering the screen resolution to 1080p. That made the biggest difference in the world for me. But to do that, you would need to be on an AOSP rom.
Biggest thing you lose going custom is the camera quality. As for other things, with AOSP you lose the knock code to unlock feature (only feature from LG that I miss), and the LG apps if you actually like any of them. In general, you void your warranty by rooting, and you could run into some issues with some custom roms, Most common is lack of Bluetooth functionality, although many will have it working. It is a much greater experience than stock roms in my opinion and worth the loss. Worst comes to worst, and you go on a nice vacation where you need a good camera for pictures (i.e. hiking) then you could always restore your stock OS (backup is a must in TWRP once you are rooted) and use it for the vacation time, and go back to a custom rom once it is over

Thanks for the input on what's lost. I've read about the camera issue. Good to know that's the biggest difference.
Actually if you're running Marshmallow there is a game optimizer mode that will drop the screen resolution to 1080p when gaming on stock. This is where most of the heat issues occur. There's also an option to reduce the resolution to 1080p for all apps. Both options require root.
That being said, even at 1080p the phone gets hotter than it should for gaming. The only other option I've found is the hardware thermal paste mod. Not willing to try it yet.

For me the phone got hot even with just multitasking. I really don't game too much and it was heating up like crazy. 1080p fixed all those issues for me. I felt as though performance was slightly better on 1400p, contrary to popular belief. The antutu score also showed that as well. Still like 1080 better though

I have got to say my G3 is by far the best phone I've ever owned. I'm currently running Stock rooted 30D. I was thinking about flashing Fulmics ROM, but I read about losing of Bluetooth. I connect to my TV with HDMI Slimport adapter so I can play games on the big screen with my MOGA Power Pro gamepad. So losing Bluetooth is a deal breaker.
