Thoughts on ROM's so far??

So I'm new to the android community coming from an iphone 4S, and so far it's pretty awesome. lol. I've tried two ROM's, AOKP and TuchMi. So far i'm enjoying TuchMi since it brings the stock with all of Samsung's features, plus overclocking, V6 and all that. performance has been nice. As i'm trying to get more into android, I wanted to know you guy's thoughts on the two ROM's or maybe any other ones that might be better?? thanks in advance!

I was hoping this thread to run good since I am trying to get an idea on roms since I just got my S III today.

We got enough good roms going.
I mean we have a subsidized carrier phone, so it's pretty natural for the international counterpart would get more attention.
With that said, I love AOKP.

AOKP is beast. Just trying to test out different ROM's, but seriously, if you like touchwiz, check it out. Only thing is, my apps say they are invalid when I download. Any help??

Diet ICS
Also tried TuchMi, it was pretty good.
Currently using the diet ICS build from 08/04 with the latest BLUE theme installed (found in the diet ICS thread from peterguru) and it looks and works great. Running ktoonz latest kernel (which allows underclocking to 192MHz and has more steps than faux123's v009) and smokin's CPU Editor with Battery Saver. Great battery life, great performance, awesome blue "diet" theme. Probably my favorite so far.
To be honest though the thing that made me switch and flash diet ICS over TuchMi 5.0 was the inclusion of Google Wallet (although now my phone thinks its a Galaxy Nexus ) -- still haven't been able to test it out in the wild though...

AOKP has been wonderful so far, flashed it from CM9 and not really seeing any reason to go back although both are great in their own ways.

Wanam has a really nice ROM. Well that's if you're one of us that actually likes Touchwiz. I for one love it. Smooth and excellent battery life.

I've been on TuchMi-S3"X" 5.0 since i got my phone 2 weeks ago. So far the best. I tried Diet rom too, but it was a little skinny for me (lol?).
I tried AOKP today and I had used AOKP on my Atrix before, but I went back to TuchMis3x right away because its so far the best. Stable, Battery is insane too!
I'm just waiting for CM10 to fully come out for our phones and i'll make the switch!

Sooo, I switched from TuchMi to AOKP, and right after, my battery starts to drain. Drained about 5% within 2min. Running TuchMi, my battery barely moves. Now I'd have to say that it is successfully the best ROM imo. only problems are: my Google account syncs on and off with contacts, and sometimes i get a blue screen fracture. idk.

If your battery drained that fast then something is wrong. Almost 11 hours on battery with 2 hours of screen time, lte on all day and wifi on past 3 hours and I am sitting at 62% right now. I am on aokp ics right now. Only thing keeping me from newer updates is that HBO go doesn't work in any of the cm10 based in roms yet that I know of
I would also like to point out that it takes several battery cycles before a rom fully settles in and you find out how it truly performs with battery.

Thanks for that. Like I said, I'm new to this so I didn't know what was going on, so the first thing that came to my mind was to go back. Now I just flashed the AOKP jb ROM. The AOKP that i had before was the CM9 based one i believe? lol. Either way, thanks man. added a little more confidence for me lol.

Jellybro from Euroskank the best one for my needs. not the last one though. 2 days battery, butter smooth, love the Jelly aesthetics and simplicity.

When the bugs are worked out of paranoid android I would say give that a run. The ability to run phone and tablet on one device together flawlessly is great. Plus you ave full control over the size of all apps and the such.

JellyBro is my top pick, then would be a stock ROM ([ROM]{??/??/????}TEAM_INSOMNIA PrEsEnTs ARISTODEMOS) and after that I'd say AOKP CM9 based for EXTREMELY long battery life.

been using cm9 for a few days, perfectly stable so far and great battery life. Can't beat stock ics

I have been on Blazer O/C with the Kalagas mixed ICS Theme and love it. Seems all the stock based ROMS are fine with some nice tweaks

Which do you prefer and why. I Basically want the pro's and con's. I know CM10 is not meant for our phones, heck even CM9 for that matter. So im curious... whats your flavor.
How long have you been using JB (either one) and what's your battery like. Or how did you make it better.
What modem works for you and why.

I am a big CM fan and after using the alphas I strayed and lived on the Unofficial CM9 nightlies for a while. I found those very smooth, but had sub-par battery.
After jumping back to GB for a month or so, I have played with both CM10 and JB AOSP. As expected, CM10 has more customization options while AOSP is very lean. Performance is very similar between the two as there has been a lot of collaboration between the devs and functionality is continually improving VERY fast with each update.
That being said, the only thing I miss on either ROM is bluetooth for media. Everything else that I use is working without issue. Some have reported LOS, but I have not experienced it with a clean data wipe and fresh install. I am still holding on to the EL29 modem, but considering trying a couple of the newer releases.
As for my preference, I am using JB AOSP as my DD at this point because I have experienced VERY good battery life with practical use CM10 seemed to drain a little faster, but it is coming along quite nicely IMO. Moving from Calks GB 3.0 to the JB ROMS lately has not been a dramatic transition in terms of battery and that is saying something.
I hope that is what you were looking for. Either way, IMO you can't go wrong test driving both and seeing which one does it for you.
Edit 1 (AOSP Alpha 5): Bluetooth media has been working since Alpha 4 and it is very stable. With Alpha 5, the screen transition from portrait to landscape (and back) is more responsive as it has been a little slow in the previous builds. This is a very nice build. The battery issue seems to be that the phone does not charge completely but shows 99-100% when disconnecting from the charger. Sbrissen has noted a potential battery fix on Alpha 5. I have not had it long enough to report anything at this point.

Jelly bean running smoothly
I'm running Sbrissens aosp alpha 3 and its smooth sailing with no known issues so far! Also think its a DD for me,battery is not melting my phone like previous builds.

I've been waiting for a post like this since Sbrissen released the ROM. Think I shall finally give it a go and see how it runs.

cm10 ftw.
after using cm you'll find it hard to go back to anything else! (unless its aokp)
there is just endless customization options..

cm10 may have more features for me aosp is a lil better far as battery and smoothness i ran both for a lil over a day aosp is the winner

Check out SB's AOSP Alpha 3. All the reviews say it is coming along nicely (almost Beta)
I tried it back when it was private, and it was amazing (other than LOS, which he seemed to have fixed)
So I'm installing it again now.

CM10 vs. AOSP
Well, for me CM does the trick. And when I got the EpTouch and found out it was not supported by CM, I was heartbroken. The Epic Touch is such a wonderful device with its screen, and CPU power; granted there are a number of devices currently better than this phone.
I think CM is a better choice just for how well they support development. I have never had an AOSP ROM before, but I enjoyed being able to boot into recovery from hitting the power button. I even enjoyed playing with a few of the CM settings in the phone.
AOSP is just pure, 100% Android, and is great if that is what you want. But, I still want a little suprises here and there.

Cm is very stable for the epic. They are quite close to official I would say.

Use el26 cwm and wipe everything. To go back just use one click.

Well I was running the AOSP build and loved it with the exception that WiFi tether won't work. Can anyone confirm it works on cm10 before I go through the trouble of flashing?

From what I read, Wifi tether is not working on Jellybean right now and have been running CM10 Alpha 4 for over 12 hours now. Let your Rom settle. It takes time to set your accounts back up with syncing and will drain your battery the first cycle. The first battery cycle had 3 hours. I left it off and let it charge over night. I have now had it off the charger for an hour and half and am still at 87%. A huge increase since first cycle. In that same time I have a 1% Time without Cell signal (LOS).... I had this on GB, just b/c I have one tower about 3 miles away that I'm anchored to. If you haven't already I would recommend flashing the new FH13 modem as well.

Well, from what i read from your reply is, I dont know what im talking about , yada yada yada.... If you read a little closer it says wifi tether is not working on the AOSP build. I clearly asked above if someone could verify that it is indeed working on the CM10 build. Is that what you are trying to say? Cause no one here said they are having problems with syncing or other accounts.

Cm10 alpha 4 is running great, I was running el29 modem but I had some issues with Los, after I upgraded to fh13 I have not experienced any more Los. also turning off location services gets better battery in deep sleep.

CM10 alpha 4 is not working well for me with LOS issues. I keep getting LOS atleast 4-5 times a day needing a reboot... going to try ASOP.

Stock v20c thoughts

Ok i want to start off by giving much thanks to the few but proud devs we have left that are developing for our Nitro HD, and this little article is just my 2 cents and my general experience. By no means am I cutting down anybodys hard work for the Nitro HD.
Now onto the real story....
So for the last 2 months or so i have been a flashaholic junky and have tried every rom available for our dear Nitro HD. The multiple yet small selection of roms all have great perks and nice added features with lots of customization. Which in part each rom available for the Nitro HD is great but also each comes with its own negatives. I recently went through the unbrick guide and went back to the v20c ATT stock rom. And really to be honest its is very solid, and the battery life has been the best from any other rom i have tried. Ill keep this short and sweet. So my conclusion is that after probably 3 or more months "probably longer" of scouring XDA for anything new for the Nitro HD and after losing countless hours of staying up late to flash recoveries, roms, backup and recover data, and even a unbrick here and there, I can say that I am actually more satisfied with the Stock v20c rom. Although ATT bloatware is annoying and really not used the stability of v20c is honestly more satisfying than having reboots, and screen flickers, and jumbled pictures in multiple apps, and dead battery after 5 hours, and those are just a few bugs I have experienced on a day to day basis with custom roms.

Honestly in my experience, the stock ICS firmware wasn't for me. I couldn't stand the default icons on the device and every launcher that I tried was laggy and annoying that I just ended up using the stock launcher. The stock launcher had some pretty nice scrolling animations though, that's probably what I miss most about the rom. That being said, I had tons of problems with it. I couldn't use the phone without it rebooting itself and this happened everyday. Also, there was this incredibly annoying bug that caused the screen to jitter around, lag and look distorted. Fixing this issue, you almost always had to reboot the phone, or at least force-close the launcher.
As for your issues, everyone experiences things differently. However, your complaints about screen flickers and artifacts can be consistent to running a non-stable rom. If you were to run CM9, I'm pretty sure that most of those problems wouldn't exist if you properly flashed the rom by clearing out your caches and wiping all data. As for your battery life, I believe that the Android operating system in general has a feature that can gradually see how you use your phone and eventually; say 2-3 weeks, your battery life will get better. I don't know how true this is, but it's something that I've read and maybe someone can confirm that it's true.
As for my current rom, I'm currently running CM10 M2 at the moment. I have a few problems like artifacts and this one annoying problem where my Alarm won't go off, but generally I'm happy. Especially considering that the rom is still in development. Generally, my battery-life consumption has been around 10-11 hours per day and I'm using the stock battery. I haven't even given the battery time to settle into this rom either, seeing how M2 was released on 10/11 and I flashed it 2 days later. Before, I was using cm9 and it was as stable as can be. I had a few resets within cm9, but those weren't even noticeable compared to the stock ICS restarts I was getting. As of now on CM10, I had one restart so far, with one complete crash. I'm still happy, since I know CM10 is in development and honestly, I was expecting it to be worse. Those crashes don't really bother me. What does bother me however, is that I can't get the pesky alarm application to work! On top of that, using swiftkey in landscape mode can be tedious because of the lag. It lagged before in ICS, but CM10 is much worse. I can't see myself using another keyboard, so hopefully performance improves. Other than that, I still prefer CM10 over stock any day.

The cm10 10/15 nightly is rock solid...this is someone coming from stock Bell ICS v20e. The artifacting issues are gone...and I haven't had any black screens or weird issues yet. Stock keyboard is fine...I have always found the android keyboard to be sluggish.

I'm like 90% satisfied with stock and that is what I'm running. My battery life has always stayed the same though, no matter what i'm running. I'm always getting a consistent ~10 hours of moderate use, and ~5-6 hours of heavier use.
This phone would be perfect if it had a battery that was just a it larger in capacity.

Yeah, I bought 2 extended batteries that I can get a full day of heavy use out of with brightness turned up. So I swap the batteries every other day, that way I only have to charge every 2 days.

extending battery + rom

so im in a mixup of battery life.. i dont do alot on my phone, some texts, check some emails, fb is nill.. im on the stock battery at this point. im running DU 4.3.1 currently.. i work construction, im up at 4:30 am, an if i didnt charged i'd be dead by 3pm..
Rom and governor can drastically help battery life. my question os a combo of the two.
whats the best battery you've experienced in a stock case without problem, and the rom you used to do so..
i wont trade phone size for increased time yeah that 3600 or whatever.. aint happening.. thanks for the imput..

I got a bigger battery at Batteries Plus 3.6V 3000mAh. With Fox Star rom with synergy kernel V0.10 . I am able to 46 hours. Thats talking texting and playing on the web.

Turn off everything you don't need. Like GPS for sure. Keep the screen dimmer, manually. Maybe even toggle data off unless you want to check something....then toggle it on, then off after. You will still get calls and texts.
How much are you using it through the day? No reason why you shouldn't make it through the day....unless you're using it a lot...instead of working.

Yeah, make sure you're doing all this. Brightness is a huge battery killer, I try and keep it at the lowest whenever possible. Also, this phone has an AMOLED screen, meaning that anything that's black will use less battery than vivid colors. I set my wallpaper to solid black and use a theme that changes many menus/apps to a solid black background.

I've had great luck lately with new Kit Kat based roms and WildKernel
I might suggest waiting for the next version of WildKernal, as there might be (not sure) a small issue with second core control,
and the dev is also going to be releasing his own kernel control app in the near future.
Otherwise, the Slim roms have been fantastic for just plain snappiness, stability, and battery life.
They are on 4.4.4 now,
which is very nice (and stable), but if you're more comfortable with it, they have 4.3 and such as well.
Personally I'm using Validus 6.0, which I'm not sure is offered on XDA for our device, but there is a google group
for Ground Zero roms. It's 4.4.4, ok with battery life, but has a bunch of features.

This. I ran SlimKat with Wild v008 for the longest time, got great battery life with a combo of SavagedZen and sio (256 read-ahead). It ran very smooth, but I ran into occasional issues like music stuttering while the screen was off. Besides that, though, it was great.
Oh, and no lockscreen lag.

So is Oxygen still the fastest alternative?

Broke my current phone and will have to use my old Desire for a couple of weeks. Last time I used it I remember Oxygen based roms were the fastest by far. Is this still true, or is the new kitkat a true contender?
I tĥink I used a rom called nicks phone.. anyone still use it? Although when I booted up the phone a few minutes ago it had Mildwild on, but totally unconfigured so I dont think ive really used it. Seems a bit sluggish though so i will want to install something else.
So I guess super fast and snappy are my only wishes. Old or new version of android, extra features, etc doesnt matter.

As a general rule, gingerbread AOSP ROMs were 'fastest' and most stable for Desire
As a more universal rule however, it's better to try different ROMs for your usage and preferences. Others can only really give their experiences with different setups etc, and their definition of fast, stable, "amazing battery" will differ massively.
- Nandroid backup
- Full wipe install new rom
- Test
- (Optional: repeat/restore backup)
- Make up mind

I used to care about getting the latest android version, but ICS and beyond the camera was unusable and everything was just laggy. I moved back to gingerbread and have been using mildwild's rom based on oxygen for over a year. It doesn't contain very much customization, but its stable and as snappy as we're going to get on such an old phone. No one's really developing for the desire anymore so I've decided to just stop playing around with other roms since this one doesn't give me any problems. Here's a link to the rom

Thanks, just the kind of input I was looking for. Just flashed the rom and the update andit seems Lightning fast. But I cannot start Play store as it crashes. Did you experience this issue?
Could I just flash latest gapps on this install?

Had to remove the Mildwild rom because there was no way to fix Play store. Ended up installing the rom Nicks Phone instead. Blazing fast and everything works perfect. Its also based on Oxygen and I really recommend it.

Try a stock rooted rom with a2sd. E.g Gingerbread 2.3.3, there are many available and everything works.

I'm using official oxygen ROM and it's still by far the fastest. Kk Roms all slow down and become unstable after a few days.

I can't remember where I found it. I had to search a bit. Took me even longer to find the track pad to wake mod.

I'm using official oxygen ROM and it's still by far the fastest. Kk Roms all slow down and become unstable after a few days.

For me, evervolv has done a great job. Here is the link
It is almost as snappy as oxygen and plus it has the latest android technology. No added lag after a few days whatsoever.
If Nikez fixes the kernel to be a 3.x one I think we will have a winner.
So for me, Oxygen comes first and Evervolv's KitKat comes second in terms of performance.
But I still have updated to Evervolv since Desire is now a good backup device for me that I use as a GPS etc.

I'm still on oxygen. Weeks now as my daily driver work phone and it's fast and stable. Leaving my n5 at home to keep it safe.
Unless someone can honestly say that stability has changed leaps and bounds in the past couple months then I see now point in going through the frustration of any regularly crashing kk rom on the desire. I think it's come as far as possible and just can't run the new stuff.
I'm really hoping the newer stuff like my n5 will be different and able to work reliably in a couple more years on up to date software. Hardware wise my desire is holding up like new after almost 4 years. I hate to toss it while its still good.
