Hi,
I've been a lurker for a while, but made an account because I have scoured the forums for an answer to this "old" question and none of the answers have solved it for me. I wish there was a forum for people who have tried everything and have had 0% success haha.
So, sorry if this is the wrong location for this, and sorry if it has been answered already 100 times!
I have a first generation Note 3, and have recently rooted (like 4 months ago?). I got the Pandora Patcher and figured out how to get it working, so I use Pandora v5.6.1 with Pandora Patcher v3.6.1.
BEFORE I started using Pandora Patcher I did not have any stuttering (maybe because i was on the current version of Pandora? But since I've been using the Patcher it stutters after every other song for 5 seconds or more, it almost sounds like lag or something. I've tried everything short of wiping it, as it was working before i downgraded Pandora for the Patcher.
My question is, am I out of luck with the Patcher? Or is there a way for me to have my cake and eat it too? (use the patcher and not have stuttering/choppiness)
Thanks for reading, appreciate the help!
Try installing a stock version and see if that works.
And what's this patch /file that you install for?
Pp.
Thanks for the reply, I believe I have a stock version of pandora. The patcher is an app root users can get that helps you get the features of a paid subscription and other stuff. Which, I only use it so I can listen to a continuous stream, since I sleep with it on...
Try this, delete your stock pandora and patch from your files, then install this apk https://www.dropbox.com/s/n5hp7rabgoa5i9w/pandora5.5FULL.apk?dl=0
It's for pandora one free with unlimited skips and no charges.
After installing just log in with your regular pandora account and enjoy.
Pp.
Wow, I didn't know this existed, THANKS! I just did what you said and downloaded this, and it seems to have unlimited skips, but will it still time out after a few hours? you know, the "Are you still listening?" pop-up?
Much appreciated, I will have a better chance of testing this out later after work and will update to see if this is solved or not.
Don't know about "Are you still listening" pop up. I use it all the time, longest about 4 hrs. Enjoy.
Pp.
So, I've had it running the past few hours like normal, except I'm using the app you linked me. It still stutters on some songs, but not as often. It was REALLY obnoxious before, and now its fairly bearable. I really appreciate it, but I wouldn't consider this solved.
This version is MUCH BETTER though, it doesn't time-out on me, and I can skip as much as i want.
Are you running stock /rooted rom?
Or a custom rom?
You may be having an app causing some conflicts.
I'm running stock /rooted / debloated rom and it works smoothly, also running on an GS4, GTAB 2 10" and GalTab Pro 7" , getting same smooth performance on all devices.
Pp.
I'm running the stock/rooted rom v4.4.2. no custom recovery...
I do not have a debloated rom ( I didn't know that was a thing!), but if there is a bloatware causing conflicts, then that would make sense? I don't have any task killers or anything I can think of that could possibly interfere. Usually when I play Pandora, its the only app running in the foreground (to my knowledge). I'm also not sure how one would go about checking for that sort of thing...
Things I've tried but did not work for me
-delete both caches
-use a wifi app to keep wifi from being throttled when screen is turned off (which btw this happens on data 4GLTE and wifi)
-use regular Pandora app without any hacks (still stutters, I was wrong before about it working then not working)
Thank you for taking the time to help me, Pancho!
I run CWM recovery which allows me to use Romtoolbox Pro and delete all that Samsung and T-mobile junk they stuff the phones with, including Knox.
The operating system runs lighter and saves your battery.
Edit; custom recovery not needed to run Romtoolbox Pro, just root will do.
Pp.
Hey,
So I wanted to test this over the weekend to see if it worked, and it has been SOLVED!
THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Here's what I did/happened:
I saw what you said about CWM recovery, and learned that I could get Rom Toolbox Pro without it, so I did using Lucky Patcher.
Now, here's the funny thing. I remember reading in another forum somewhere that some people were able to solve their stuttering with a CPU manager. I stupidly didnt even try that assuming it wouldnt work haha. So since Rom Toolbox comes with one, I used it there.
switched the Governor to "ONDEMAND" and changed the lowest speed it could have to 300 instead of 200(default).
I did all of this on Friday 2/20 , and have used Pandora everyday since (with the Pandora Patcher, I went back because of the time-out) and no stuttering or anything. I've used Bluetooth, aux and just the phone speakers and its all fixed! I cant believe it was the CPU, and I hope I never forget that in the future haha.
EDIT 3/11/15: So, I was horribly horribly wrong about how this worked for me, and I believe I have now fixed the stuttering problem for my situation specifically (knock on wood).
Here's what has happened since I wrote this "solved" post.
I realized that the previous solution only worked on some kernels (mostly custom) but not the one that came standard with my Note 3 N900T. I also stopped using the ROM Toolbox CPU Manager, as I needed something with profiles.
So I flashed LeanKernel, and got setCPU. I use LeanKernel's InteractiveX Governor with I/O ROW, and it improved my phone overall, but specifically for Pandora stuttering, it did nothing. So I use setCPU profiles.
My setCPU profiles for Pandora (really my only profiles):
100 priority - App Pandora + screen off + charging (any ) = CPU Max 2726 - Min 422
99 priority - App Pandora + screen off = CPU Max 422 - Min 422
I originally had an issue getting the profiles to even stick/activate, but what I had to find out for myself is if you go to the Governers tab in setCPU, just check set on boot, and set in profiles, then it should work. ALSO, I learned that even with all of this going on, if I'm listening to Pandora and go look at a different app, or return to the home screen (basically putting Pandora in the background) The profiles do not work. Pandora has to be in the FOREGROUND in order for the profile to be active. When that happens, and the screen is off, I get flawless playback.
This is just for me specifically, I hope this helps someone else, as this was A LOT of trail and error... sorry for jumping the gun earlier
Thanks Pancho, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you and wish to give you plenty of internet hugs!!! Please have a wonderful day and I hope this helps anyone else that was in my predicament.
TL;DR: FOR ME PERSONALLY, I GOT LEANKERNEL AND SETCPU (USE INTERACTIVEX AND ROW), USED PROFILES FOR PANDORA + SCREEN OFF AND PANDORA + SCREEN OFF + CHARGING. THEN MAKE SURE PANDORA IS IN FOREGROUND WHEN PLAYING AND SCREEN IS OFF, THEN NO MORE STUTTER!!!

I am running stock 3.29.651.5. Ever since I updated, my battery performance has decreased, my web browser has become very choppy, and overall, the phone just isn't as responsive. The previous build ran beautifully on my Evo. Anyone else having issues?

PEACE,
YES!! It appears that my browser cant even get some pages (or it takes forever to load ---for instance XDA). I use Gtalk (I know most of you consider it BLOATWARE) and i barely can connect or 3G or 4G. My best connection is Wi-Fi which is good--when I'm home...not so good when I'm at work. I've ran the wimax test on my phone through Terminal Emulator and it stated that my wimax keys are still in tact and i have installed the latest radio...*shrugging shoulders*

I am running rooted stock (myn's I believe) with no issues... my other evo is stock 3.29 and had battery issues for the second and third days running but has since smoothed out....
Edit... using Sprint Lovers stock-ish 3.29 from over at ppcg
I have rooted odexed Rom and I can't rip out the Sprint bloatware. It's driving me insane. DC 3.6 can't come fast enough

I'm definitely having issues with gtalk..I can always connect via wifi but for some reason 3g has issues. I can connect with other 3rd party apps though, like beejive and trillian.
I am also having some issues. Used to get around 20hrs or so under moderate use. Now it seems to be more like 12 possibly 16. I get a very weak signal at work and this new update seams to drain much quicker. been thinking about rooting. Have done a lot a reading but not 100% sure how to do it yet.
same problem here. So I read elsewhere to check your Accounts and Sync in the settings. The update reenabled sync for stocks, weather and peep....which once I turned back off, my battery is fantastic!

I can't signin to GTalk since the update. I cleared the data, but that didn't help. What exactly does GTalk do?
Yeah already turned the sync back off. Gonna try rooting with unrevoked. Seems pretty simple to do.
I have had stock everything since I purchased my phone, no rooting or anything and have never had any issues with my phone at all. Since the 3.29 update, I think my phone is actually running better. The screen transitions on all my programs seem smoother, even the 4G load animation is smoother. Battery life is the same as before, crappy but I use my phone ALOT for work. I just don't know if I am just lucky or it is becuase I am using the phone as it was intended from Sprint.

Just a question, not being a smart ass, but what made you join these forums if you haven't done anything to your phone? I'm truly intrigued by the different things I can do, and I like reading about what I can possibly do.
I've been having an issue with audio applications.
If I pause a song or podcast (whether it be in the stock Music application, Google Listen, or Audio Book Player), leave the application for a while, and return there is a very high chance the song or podcast will restart from the beginning. Likewise if I do the same in Pandora the application fill crash on me.
This is mostly annoying because 90% of what I listen to on my phone are podcasts and lectures. Not being able to easily pick up where I left off is irksome.
Has anybody else had this issue?
have you tried pulling out the battery? i had alot of problems with the phone after update and so did my parents. after i pulled battery it starting working alot smoother and battery life has been alot better.

Yes and it is really ticking me off. I started noticing this after the update. I also listen to a lot of podcasts, and am tired of it restarting, it never did this before. Who do we report these bugs too?

Well normally you would report bugs to the app developer, in the case of apps. But in this case I don't know, because I haven't had any of these problems. Haven't done any podcasts but I use Pandora, last.fm, or Slacker radio for about an hour a day. I use it for a half hour on the way to work, pause it since I don't use my phone at work for anything but phone calls, then play from where I paused it 8-10 hours later for the half hour drive home.
I'd try a hard reset. Sometimes updates don't work smoothly. Just look at the Sprint forums shortly after the 2.2 update. Tons of issues that were fixed shortly there after by a hard reset. I haven't noticed any issues, and my battery seems to actually last longer, when the screen is off. I just got 12 hours with several phone calls, wifi, bluetooth, GPS, maps, navigation (for a short time), and the biggest battery drainer: games. Still had 12 percent, and it probably would have lasted at least 4 hours if I just let it sit. I leave all my email push and have facebook sync enabled.
Anyways, from my experience, nothing seems broken, its faster thanks to no fps lock, overall better performance, and the battery lasts longer, though it seems to run down a bit faster when in use compared to before, but it barely loses a charge while sleeping, so standby time makes up for it. (as long as you let it sleep, which in my experience, starting with the G1, is the real secret to best battery life. Let it sleep as long as possible. Constantly messing with it, switching the screen off, only to pick it up five minutes later is horrible for battery life. Use it, let it sleep, pick it up again in an hour. If you can that is...)
Was pretty choppy until I flashed netarchy kernel. But still getting alot of FC on Internet, when I use the back button it FC.
I had issues at first but after time and 2 or 3 reboots, all is smooth.

my defy is just 2 weeks old and i have started experiencing trememdous lags....
its 2.2.2 running , kernel is 2.6.32.9-g0671d13 , just in case it could help in finding a solution...
1. the screen goes off on its own half of the time (even though the time out is of 1 minute) and even when i unlock it , it again goes off.. ITS REALLY FRUSTRATING
2. i have just 1 game installed, but even then the phone lags a lot, the game lags and so does the entire phone..!
3. the internet isnt getting activated (i guess thats a network problem though), anyone with a similar problem!?
please post replies as soon as possible..
well i too experience the same, mine is 30 days old...
I have disabled gps/data/wifi/auto brightness to get max battery yet it fails to go beyond 1 day even if i use max an hour of wifi.
screen going blank on it own is frustrating
moto widget for time and date does not keep current time
lag in touch even after running ATK on auto aggressive mode
defy is running indian 2.2.2
p.s. any idea if i can get data on first date of use for battery? I somehow feel a new one should give more standby life.
my phone does last around 1 1/2 days with an hours gaming....and it does keep the current date and time (as of now)...
mine too lags inspite of the ATK being on autokill.... even the homescreen takes time to load after pressing the home button ...
Might want to try getting rid of ATK.
Tasks/services run for a reason on android. When something kills them, they'll start back up, causing more cpu and memory usage than if you'd just leave the service running.
Run for a reason, but not necessarily a good one. Stock motorola/vodafone firmware that I had on my defy would run many completely irrelevant processes - VF360, newsandweather, amazon mp3, etc. Task killing isn't the solution because they just start up again.
The best way to get best performance from the phone is to install CM7.
You could try to wipe in stock recovery. Check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982, point witch says Froyo laggy. You will lose all data.
If you find it laggy afterwards, you will never be happy with the preferments on stock froyo. Then try CM7. You will be able to downgrade to send it to warranty as I also did this. It is quite a difference.

Is it going off while you are holding it by the top, with a finger on the left of the speaker hole?
If it is the case, it is because you are masking the proximity sensor. And if you have the "Pocket detection" feature activated, it will cause this annoying stuff...
Well not to worry even mine was laggy before, i had just installed 2-3 apps. I had to restart my phone at least once then i installed cm7 rc1.5 Now its very fast and i dont remember the last time when my phone was lagging and freezing.
I guess it has something to do with the froyo and motoblur on defy that makes it laggy.
You have to have get rid of stock froyo after owning a defy.. thats the truth..
I did a readup on the ATK stuff and the excerpt from the and dev documents... well since the read i have uninstalled all task killers... (kept one just in case with all auto actions disabled)
I do hope the lag issue is resolved after moving to CM7/Jboogie3 etc
however the battery issue is a major hurdle for now as one day is too less, i probably have to take it to the service center for a checkup and/or claim warranty on battery. till them no flashing for me...
att: patriiice - even when the proximity sensor is not covered, i do experience screen blanks, almost immediately asa the power button is pressed to wake the device.
The lag presented on the Defys running Froyo is a "super nice feature" by Motorola it has an easy fix tho.
Its caused by the VM consuming all memory, all its needed is adjusting the amount of MB the VM should leave free.
There are a few ways to it:
1) Run a terminal emulator, or use GScript Lite to run this:
su
vm.min_free_kbytes=8192
(Not permanent, need to be ran every time you reboot)
2) Get Sysctl from market and do it from there.
3) Get SetVSel and do it from there.
Lag
I have that problem to. The bad thing is that i can`t answer call during the lag, it says i have my phone is closed or i don`t have signal. I`ve installed Temp+CPU and during lag it shows that the proc is running at 100%. Memory has all the time, around 130 min and 230 max. Closed all programs one by one, no change. I restart the phone and everything is running smooth and it lasts max 1 day. i have stock rom 2.2.2. (please excuse my spelling)

I also use 2.2.2 stock and my defy runs without lag... you should consider to root the phone and freeze some unnecessary stock-preinstalled apps like Kindle, Voice command, etc... the ones you will never use. I freezed about 20 apps and there is no lag at all. (I even froze Maps, Streets, SIM toolkit, and some others)

My Defy was lagging until I rooted and installed SetVSel. Now its running as breeze with Stock Indian Froyo.
stock froyo is not good but it shouldn't be that bad. there were some faulty battery issue that i have heard of before too. but in your case your defy might even be faulty. so i would suggest you get it replaced or fixed under warranty first before flashing any custom rom.

Nope. I was wrong after 3 days of normal proc usage it started again. I`ve installed OS Monitor (free on market) and there was a process the ate all my resources: "DRM Protected Content Storage". Selected watch log and there was something like "enter, delete update, uri: content://media/external/audio/media/1 ../44.... /254..."
This process is searching ur phone for media, video audio and looked like it was stucked at this folder. I`ve searched the phone for that folder but couldn't find it so i just killed the app in OS Monitor. After the process restarted at log was showing "media search finished:182 audio files found and 1 video found". Looks like that's my problem and maybe yours to. Cheers mates
so I might visit the service center this weekend to have my battery life checked.. one day life with all wifi/data/gps disabled and below average voice calls is not acceptable at all.
what is stock recovery?? and will it void my warranty???
thanks a lot guys for ur replies!!
but the thing is my phone has become even slower!!
when i first switch on the phone i have around 240MB free RAM but just after an hour everything becomes too slow, even opening of the menu! and after 2-3 hours of usage it keeps on reducing and finally reaches as low as 40MB .....
what could be causing this??
i have android assistant by which i clear cache, ram still it doesnt help....
Now that ics has been out for a while, is it a good idea to have this on?
It does make the phone faster and only affects two of my apps but i still dont know how does it affect battery or RAM(i read somewhere it affects ram)
Do you guys use it?

I've chosen to not use it. It was useful in the early days when not a lot of apps worked well on ICS, but nowadays it breaks more than it fixes in my experiences.
I don't use it. I find it makes many apps laggy. Though it does boost a quadrant score.
In theory, it would be better to the let the GPU render stuff as it takes the strain off the CPU. Too bad it breaks many apps, though.
nope dont use it. does more problems than good
I use it, never encountered any of this, EXCEPT for a GUI glitch in Power amp. Besides that, every works perfectly.
On side note, back when the Samsung Vibrant first got ICS (somewhere around December), I found that many apps just crashed when using it, such as trying to pick out a wallpaper in GO SMS. Nowadays, nothing besides that Power amp glitch I've noticed. And battery life is somewhat better too.

The United Airlines app used to have problems when this was on -- would show up as an incredibly tiny rectangle on the screen, as if scaling was totally thrown off. I was flying a lot then, so I unchecked the option. The United app has been updated a few times in the past few months, and I tried checking force GPU, and the latest version of the United app works again... I've got 104 apps installed, and the only other one I've seen that complains is Flipboard -- got a message once, yesterday, that it's not designed to work with forced GPU and that I should turn it off. I ignored the message, though, and Flipboard seems fine -- as does everything else I'm using.
I'll leave it turned on until / unless I run into incompatibilities with apps that I find important...
This just happened to me today. First time it happened was early in the afternoon when I was playing Mini Motor Racing and I turned off the screen for a while. When I turned it on and unlocked my phone, the game screen was black. When I pressed the home button, it froze on me, then it rebooted. Second time, it was the same situation. Then the third time, when I was downloading a game from via my browser, it froze and restarted on me and now, I tried to transfer an obb file from a game to my phone and when it was half way done, it restarts on me. Anyone know what's going on?

So could it be mini motor racing that's causing the reboots?
I forgot to mention that it makes a popping noise when it freezes and restarts
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
More than likely it is mini motor. I've had apps that froze my phone that required battery pull. Deleted the app and all was fine.
Sounds pretty typical of overheating, or overclocking/undervolting. Maybe try keeping a fan on it when doing anything intense. Or you might try a kernel that lets you raise the voltages a bit. Some phones are more stable that way.
I dont know about volting. How much should I overvolt? I'm using AOKP w/ Franco kernel. My max clock speed is 1305 (previously 1420) and my min clock speed is 920.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I'd try furst uninstalling the app just to see it after the pone runs properly or it keeps rebooting. The OC/UV issue is hard (at least for me) and have never given to me no good experiencies. I tried once to UV and had the same problems you're having, only solving theme by retoring setting to default.
If you're rooted, get the Trickster Mod app from the Play Store and disable Smart Reflex (all three switches) and see if the reboots stopped.
Cause apparently, that seems to be the case foe my phone (I use Faux's kernel v 21 with no smart reflex... the basic basic kernel)
sent from my mini tractor
question useless
Most kernel use Smartreflex, and if he had do this answer , i dont think it's going to undervolt under stable value for his phone
If you could provide more info about your phone specs its better, if you use OC kernel like Glados with 2 ghz, it's pretty normal, ever cpu is different
using CM10 nights can cause ( never ) bug like this, but if your phone freeze in infinite bootloop with metallic sound under is surely voltage value.
try to use your ROM's stock kernel , ( you might reflash without wipe anything your ROM and ( if needed ) GAPPS )
Well... if your post was directed to me, in that case, I'm using the non smart reflex version of the kernel. The stock kernel also uses smart reflex.
Strangely, I have to use the kernel without smart reflex... cause if I get another kernel which has the provision for smart reflex, and manually turn it off, it doesn't seem to help (or stick).
Of course, if your list wasn't targeted to me, then feel free to ignore this post

I notice that whenever I play music (Pandora or Google Music) with the screen off and a bunch of recent applications, the sound will skip and stutter. This only happens when the screen is off AND when I have a bunch of recent applications open. It sounds like an issue with how JB is handling RAM, but I have 80-90% ram usage at most when it happens; or perhaps is an issue with the wakelock under heavy RAM usage. If I clear all the recent applications by holding the home button down and clicking the trash icon, this problem goes away.

- Model: GT-N7105 (I could rename to T-889 but I believe this is relevant to the issue)
Attempts to resolve:
- Wiped dalvik cache and regular cache
- Installing newer versions of Teshxx's stock odexed rom
- Wiped app data from Google Music and Pandora
Potentially related:
- I deleted the stock music player and musicFX app
- I deleted some other miscellaneous apps
- I have some tasker profiles that address both Pandora and Google Music (one is a trigger to open Pandora, the other is to increase volume of Google Music)
- I have not tried and would like to avoid doing a full system wipe
Im completely stock and listen to pandora several hours a day. Usually while driving to and from work.
No issues for me.
Could be an issue with your ROM.

Do you usually have the screen off and have a bunch of recent apps?
Same happens to me with LG O3D in every music player (only while screen off). Even If I Use only 70 % of ram

Screen is off when im driving.
Ive gone days with out rebooting my phone, and i dont go in and stop them. So yes recent apps has what ever has been opened in between reboots.
Probably a ROM issue. I am back onto stock with my gs3 (Waiting on note 2) and have never had those issues. O have had them on different ROMS though.
I can have tons of apps open and screen off and no issues on stock. Shouldn't be a RAM issue either as 2G is plenty.

I encountered a simular problem on my Samsung infuse tracked it down to cpu throttling I'd check governer and scheduler may be some screen off power save bias built in to rom maybe

I do believe it may be related to CPU throttling as well. I do not have powersaving enabled and also do not have have any governing apps. I have better battery stats to track my CPU speeds and battery stuff, but I'm not sure how to set governing without an app.

Are you using voodoo sound?
Could be ROM, kernel, CPU settings, etc. This happened to me last week with the CM nightlies. I installed an update & my music started stuttering like crazy when the screen was off. Turns out I had the CPU settings customized for a special kernel but hadn't reinstalled that kernel, so the phone was trying to manage the stock CM kernel with settings for the custom kernel.
This used to happen to me before I switched to Perseus kernel. Since then I don't have the issue. Could you try that?

I tried doing a full wipe and installed teshxx's N7105 t-mo rom (4/09/13) and did not use any throttling apps (everything else stock). The music was still skipping with the screen off, but I tried setting my minimum CPU speed to 400mhz (from 200mhz) and the skipping stopped (300mhz still skips). So I'm positive it's a problem with CPU throttling now. Since it's a full wipe and I'm still having this issue, I feel that it's a hardware issue. Perhaps I should just warranty my phone.
Changed governor to on demand and all is good.
Music skipping when screen turns off
Hey guys, I didn't realize how many other people were having this problem too....
My phone is rooted and I used ROM Toolbox Pro to turn up the min CPU value from 200mhz to 400mhz and it seems to work so far. So if you can find any type of app that can up your minimum value on your CPU it might do the trick. Because that stutter is super annoying....
I will keep you guys up to date if this doesn't work. But so far so good.
I noticed the same thing on my note 10.1 tab. Fully stock, first day i got it it did that with Google play music. Only noticed it that one time though. I'll report back if it happens again.
