I have upgraded to crDroid over a week ago, having a few issues - network gets lots upon turning mobile data on forcing me to reboot, ringtone doesn't change to any song on SD card, bluetooth A2DP keeps loosing audio ( no sound from time to time ). It is stable overall, but these few things really annoy me and now I'm going to try AICP - 8.0 - LP 5.0.2_r1 which is stable and apparently free of those errors. Other than that, just flash it normally. The overall experience is very good.

You didn't know it will wipe all your data? I assume this was your first custom ROM then. You really should start with reading some FAQ and general information on this site. However for future flashes, you can keep all of your settings and apps if you have an app like Titanium Backup. If you do everything as you're instructed in flashing tutorials, there is very small chance that you're going to brick your phone. Even thou I managed to mess my recovery up and brick it, local phone repair guy fixed it for me for less than 5$.

The ramblings of a retired moron............

Well after getting things slowly sorted i am trying to root my phone easy you would think but no even this appears to be difficult for me LOL.. After going through every thing the tut's say and downloading the all in one kit checking that the debugging is on and USB drivers are on etc. when i run Hassoons program and go to install either of the TWRP or Clockwork mod to root it all i get is the cmd screen and it does nothing just sit's there anyone have any ideas as i am out of them now......
Well sorted that now it appears it has to be in a folder called HTC on C: i didn't see any mention of that anywhere........ Oh one other thing anyone using the Hasoons program who want to install Clockwork mod you have to rename it in the recoveries folder to cwm.img or it won't load in the program as it is named incorrectly... so it can't find it..
Everything all good at the moment rooted and sorted CWM on and working now it's just having the cojones to try the new rom to take me to Lollipop.. This very scary for me as i don't have any money to buy another phone new or second hand money very tight.... I don't know if anyone has been reading my ramblings but if you have wish me luck i have done a back up in CWM and titanium so .....................................
well i found the cojones and it failed with an error in the Resurrection Remix 5.3.3 SPECIAL EDiTiON..... what a bummer.......

Try flashing the ROM manually (with no toolkit). Flash the zip from the recovery, but flash the boot.img manually.
You'll need the ADB bundle of course.

Avoid AICP when possible. While it's a great rom with lots of features, it's always extremely buggy/unreliable/currently overheats and reboots. I've been using AICP on a few devices since 4.3.1 - 5.0, while it's okay for some people on some devices.. there's a pretty consistent trend. If it's not good enough for my girlfriend, it's not good enough for a daily rom IMO.
Resurrection remix is a solid rom with many features and well laid out. While it tends to have less features and modifications than AICP, it is pretty solid and reliable while still being a major improvement over stock AOSP.
crDroid has never really hit the spot in performance or any other area which hasn't already been surpassed by other roms.
But please know nothing has higher battery life or produces less heat than HTC based roms & kernels. As this device can have poor battery life and runs quite hot. Another thing is the better control of the GPU with the HTC based kernels.

[Q] need some help with this

ok, i just got a captivate glide from my gf, ive been looking into flashing and rooting for about 3 months, but i JUST got an android (ik so behind) but originally i was looking into sidekick 4g for keyboard but this worked too in my eyes and it was free so i figured why not, but either way i wanted to root and flash, but now im at a barricade that im not sure if to continue or not, i rooted using one of the threads directions
this one to be exact
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1378082
i ran into a barricade here at first, the initial set up wouldnt run, i fixed that by doing the Vol. Down plus Power recovery mode i think its called, and clearing memory then rebooting and it worked fine, i was rooted and had the super user app as well (some boxes from widgets were invosible like accuweather and the android assistant thing but, thats ok).
ok next step i knew if i was supposed to try to flash a rom i should back up EFS which i did with some difficulty (such as figuring out i needed busybox lol)
ok now my next step was installing ROM manager by clockworkmods
NOW onto the actual part i need help with that i couldnt figure out myself (and excuse me for being newbish here too as i dont know much but im not bad with tech either but i felt i damn near bricked the phone in the process already so i WANT to continue with guidance before i do anything else)
now that im rooted, now that everythings backed up on my computer and ive got rommanager and everything
what now
will i still be rooted once i flash a rom? will i still have busy box, super user, all of that stuff? (as the thread i rooted with clearly said that was flashing a rooted rom)
and theres some other personalization questions i need help with too but thats more towards once ik what direction im going in
and uh.. not sure if it matters but im on metropcs service, so occasionally i get issues if i have to reset the phone at all as i have to change the ANP or ADP cant remember the acronym but ive got to change it from some t-mobile one to the metropcs one, i dont see why that would matter but, its a just in case emasure, also im using the ATT one not rodgers (not even sure what rodgers is tbh)
EDIT: OH one last thing. the rooted rom is gingerbread.. thats my main reason for wanting to change it.. i want kitkat, or would prefer kitkat, but id like some opinions as well on what perhaps the best ROM would be, im not sure between omni-rom and cyanogynmod which are the main ones im looking into, but, again, get more into that later
ok now
now im looking through the Rom info.. and.. im starting to wonder.. is it even worth it?
what sacrifices am i going to be making if i flash a custom? what all can i change without flashing a custom? and can i still get kitkat without screwing up my root (KIES?? or ODIN??) its just the things like this that make me wonder... i want the root, that much i DO know, theres so much i can do with rooting im seeing this and enjoying this, but i just need some type of guidance as to what to do, and if theres a better place for this thread please feel free to move it as i do see that it might be ok to have under general ndroid questions, but, i wasnt all too sure on it as this isthe phone im using so any issues deriving from the phone type might screw someone up
Most of the custom roms are rooted already.
There is only 4.0 official, no kitkat. We dont have odin custom images, nor KIES. You must wipe your data, system, boot parition, install KK means clean phone for you.
I think KK is better then official, but it has some limitation.

ok.. im confused then, cause i had kitkat on it when i used kies to update firmware, or atleast i thought i did, perhaps because both had 4 and i was sleepy i was confused lol, and sorry but if KK doesnt mean KitKat then what does it mean. and how high will a custom Rom take me in terms of lining up with official, just to ice cream sandwich?. and.. cyanogenmod, ive been tempted to get it but.. im not sure exactly which one to get because when i was on the site i only found captivate in the devices not captivate glide
EDIT: one more thing, as far as wiping the phone clean and starting over, what do i use.
and of course if you say the rest are rooted, then whats one of the best kernels and roms to use then, its true i want atleast ICS on here, so.. if im right i looked up KK, do you mean KKlauncher the app?
well...
ok i soft bricked my phone, it just shut down in middle of installing some fonts, and for some reason i cant restore it even tho i created a back up as it advised me to do so, i get errors in CWM recovery,
now im about to just do this
using this as a sort of reference so people can keep track of me if something else happens that i mess up..

I mean KK is kitkat. I dont know what did you read, but there is ICS the last official.
Cyanogenmod and other custom roms has own official support, that what you can download rom their site. We dont have official support from them, you cant download those roms from there. You can found download link in rom's threads.

I preffer CM11, but yon can found many other KK roms.
If you brick you randroid, just reinstall same you had.

hell i got it back on default ICS now lol, i screwed it up XD and yea ik you guys dont have the downloads your selves but the links and guidance of what i should be doing is basically what i was after ill look at the link you gave me, i think im going to chill out with the flashing right this second, but ill pick it back up later im sure, i atleast liked the cpu setting apps. made my battery last much longer and for what time it lasted i loved it
ok another thing im concerned with is alot have bugs that are deal breakers for me, such as messing up the keyboard (the whole reason i have this phone)
and looking through it i do like CM11 too
but looking at your post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588304
can you explain what you mean by the fixed rotation and skype issues,
and perhaps is there a full feature list somewhere? thats one big thing i want to look at if possible, i usually just keep seeing bug fixes on any ROM
Voip apps (skype, vibert etc) have strange sound, only temporaly fix exists.
When you take a picture with camera, it has fix rotation, I dont remember witch position is the fixed one, but you make photos with different rotation, the picture will be rotate 90/180/270, and you must fix the image.
Most importan bug are: phone call sound doesnt work with BT devices, and voip sound is buggy.

[Q] Is my Galaxy S3 possibly bricked?

Hello everyone,
I want to start by saying that this is my first post on xda, having just signed up a few minutes ago. I tried to search for any inquiries that were similar to mine, and couldn’t find any, but I may have missed them so I apologize if that’s the case, and I’m really not even sure if this is the correct area to post this in. Once again, I’m sorry if it’s not right. I also should say that I’m not very knowledgeable in the area of rooting, and flashing roms, and I’m sure that you guys know much more than me. That having been said, you’ll have to bear with me and my lack of understanding if that’s okay, as I’m pretty limited. I've encountered a problem with my GS3 (Galaxy S3) today, where it now gets stuck in a boot-loop every time I try to turn it on. Prior to that happening, I was running the stock, unrooted AT&T android version that was released in May (4.4.2 I believe?), and I had been having a lot of problems with performance and battery life. But as I had had the phone for over two years (I bought it in November 2012), I simply thought that it was slowing down and I thought it could possibly stop working, but as I said, I’m no expert. Back to earlier today, I was using the phone as I normally do (texting, light web-browsing, etc.), when I heard the notification tone indicating I had received a text. I picked up my phone, pushed the lock/power button to turn the screen on, and it said something to the effect of (I wish I had written it down, but I didn’t think to at the time) “software broken, you’ll need to factory reset your device” (that’s very much just my recollection, so I may have it completely wrong), along with a prompt to reset it. I touched that, and it just shut off. I tried to turn it back on, and it would keep shutting off after about 15-20 seconds. But I was able to get it into both recovery and download mode – just not booted up. So I thought to (probably stupidly) try to flash a rom, and I’ve tried several since that time (my phone won’t mount as a device on my laptop, thus preventing transfers, though I was able to get around this by using a micro sd card adapter and putting the card in that, then transferring the files to the card). But the first I tried – and was successful in flashing was called AOKP 4.4.4 (Kitkat) made by Task650 from 9-10-14. I’ll try to post the link to the thread that I used to research it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766684. As I’ve always been on touchwiz, I found out after I flashed it that I had to download the gapps package, which I tried to do from this link https://plus.google.com/+SeanHacker/posts/AGq2b8YwjXB . I downloaded that and tried to flash it by following this guide http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...he-gapps-package-after-installing-cyanogenmod . I’m sorry if I’m not organizing this in the right manner, but I’m doing my best! So anyway, I installed it from zip within clockwork mod recovery and then cleared the cache and dalvik cache afterwards, as the person in the above link said to. Then, I tried to reboot and that’s what I got stuck in the boot-loop. I left my phone for 30-35 minutes thinking it might’ve been taking awhile because I’d just tried to install the google apps. But it never did seem to do anything. Since that time, I’ve tried installing the stock rom (which I downloaded here: http://stockroms.net/file/GalaxyS3/SGH-I747/StockROMS.net-SGH-I747_ATT_1_20120522193451.zip) through odin and the recovery mode installation, cyanogenmod 10.2.1, and synergy r484 ( http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/GalaxyS3Verizon/roms/Synergy/Synergy-S3_19Apr13_1622_r484_s.zip ), all of which have been unsuccessful. The closest I got to being complete was going through the aroma installer for synergy, before trying to install and getting the message “Something was not successful during rom install. You will likely have a non-booter if you see this. If it constantly happens press save log in aroma and report this in xda thread.” (I didn’t know how to save the log and post it here). So that’s about everything that’s happened up until this point, and I apologize if my rambling is hard to follow lol. I just didn’t know what else to do. I’m very scared that I’ve bricked my device and that it won’t work anymore. I’m out of ideas, so I would greatly appreciate any and all help and/or input! Thank you very much for your time!
* Here is the link for the multi-window guide: http://www.howtogeek.com/189345/how-to-get-multi-window-multitasking-on-any-android-phone-or-tablet/
ok , let me get the ball rolling but not real knowledgeable myself.
1) do you know your bootloader and modem version.?
2) not bricked as long as it still can get in a bootloop.
3) sometimes (if were lucky) you can do the 'pull-battery' trick., pull battery out , wait a minute or so , put back in , do the button thing to get to recovery (power, volume up and home at same time).
(i , personally , would probably do a complete wipe and try to install the CM 10.2.1 zip to at least have my phone up and running. you still wont have gapps but you can get that after your phone is back up).
hopefully (!!!) someone more knowledgeable will chyme in , cause the battery pull trick is a maybe/maybe not. sorry dont have more right now. good luck.

Since your phone was running 4.4.2, do not attempt to flash any ROMs using that attempt to downgrade your bootloader to anything prior to 4.4.2.
Try this to get your phone up and running:
download the latest CM11 for the d2lte and save it to an external SD card: https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=d2lte
dowload the latest tar.md5 version of Philz Touch for the d2lte from here: https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_...Edition/d2lte/
boot phone in download mode, open Odin 3.07, do not check anything except f.reset.time, flash Philz via PDA box, remove USB cable when you see the word Reset appear in the status window, remove battery, replace battery, boot into recovery, format system, Dalvik, data, and cache, flash cm11, and reboot.
thank you audit13 , i was really reaching. lol. to heck with mighty mouse. its "mighty-aidit13 here to save the day". :good:

I'm sorry, but I don't know my bootloader or my kernel version, unfortunately. I've got a lot to learn, and this happening clearly proves that lol. I will try that with cm right now, and let you know how it goes! Should I download the latest nightly or the latest stable version? I'm sorry for all of the questions!
questions are o.k. its how we learn. (& keep from jacking up our phones.lol).

I appreciate your patience. I don't know if I could be so kind and forgiving if I was in your shoes right now. I just feel like a total idiot for not seeking advice before I flashed the initial rom.
The latest nightly or stable will do. You just want to get your phone up and running with a ROM.
It was successful!
I flashed cm and it worked! It is seemingly fully-functioning right now (I haven't noticed anything that isn't working), but I have two more things I'd like to ask about, if you don't mind. First, and this is the more important one to me, is getting the gapps if that's at all possible (though I'm a little hesitant about it), though I can live without them. I would post the link to the aforementioned gapps guide, but I cannot post links in replies right now as I do not yet have 10 posts, but I will try to edit the initial post. Since that’s where I ran into the problem initially, it’s may not a good idea to follow that link’s instructions. Secondly, one thing I'd like to do – seeing as this is my first non-touchwiz rom – is get multi-window installed on this rom, if I can do that. There was a link I was reading up on, though I don’t know how accurate or “safe” it is. I will edit the initial post with the link if I can. I feel bad for having all of these different problems and questions, but you guys are lifesavers. For all I knew, I’d be stuck with an expensive paperweight from this point on, so you guys really helped me so much!

here is a link for CM 11 gapps.
dont know about multi-window , my phone is very bare bones (not even gapps).

Confirm the bootloader and modem on your phone using the Samsung Info App from the Play store. Once you have this information, you can look for TW-based ROMs in the development threads that are compatible with your bootloader and modem.
I haven't had an s3 for over 10 months so I can't comment on the availability of the multiwindow function in CM ROMs.
That's very much appreciated!
Thank you so much! Would you mind looking at that link that was edited into the first post to tell me if the procedure itself is correct? I just don't want to take any chances!
Okay, I will do that as soon as I get the gapps installed Thank you so much again for all of your help!

if your talking about the flashing guide for gapps , it looks correct. you flash gapps from recovery just like you did the CM11 rom.

The Xposed Framework will do what you want to do. If you want to try CM12, Xposed will not work as it has not been updated to work with Android 5.0.
I recommend setting up your ROM with all of the apps and settings you like. Once you have done that, boot into recovery, create a nandroid backup, boot into the ROM, install Xposed Framework and play with it. If something goes wrong, boot back into recovery and restore your nandroid backup which will undo everything you did since you create your backup.

Okay, thank you so much, and I'm fine with staying on CM11, I think. Yes, I was talking about the gapps guide in the last post; sorry I didn't clarify it better haha. Is there a way to create the nandroid backup onto my micro sd card?
there is in twrp. dont know about cwm , but should be though.

You should be able to specify the backup location in recovery. For me, I tend to save it to an external SD card and make a copy on your computer for safekeeping.
Thank you and I'm sorry! This is just all so confusing to me, and I'd be completely lost without both of you helping me!

New to GN2

Hi folks,
Just decided to retire my old S3 and when looking for a new phone my main requirement was to get a good DAC built in without breaking the bank or renewing my contract, ended up with the Sprint Note 2. Naturally I was excited but quickly put off by the stock ROM so I decided to root/flash, etc. This is what happened so far;
-Rooted with newest TWRP and root verified on stock rom (followed NK2 instructions)
-Made the big mistake of flashing now without backup, after trying a couple of roms I kept having the same problem (phone gets stuck in load animation indefinitely regardless of rom flashed)
-Gave up on custom roms so I flashed a rooted stock NE2 rom and phone turned on wooohooooooo
-But wait, no network connection, no voice or data, tried to flash modem zip file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2139889 but it keeps saying zip is corrupt, redownloaded & recopied to SD with the same result.
Now I have a working phone but not so working since I can't place calls. What went wrong? any help is very very appreciated.
Phone works after flashing Alliance ROM but somehow now TWRP recovery is gone and phone is UnRooted which is less than ideal but it works nevertheless...
Now before I go off wasting a whole day flashing & waiting for battery to recharge can anyone please point me in the right direction?
I need to figure out the following:
-Root method that works, I'm on Alliance NE2 now
-Which recovery is best recommended for current ROMs?
-Need a kernel that enables audio features like Direct DAC & upsampling
-ROM that actually works with said Kernel and functions at least 90% with wifi tethering etc.?
Surprised it's this difficult with this phone coming from the S3 which took me no more than an hour first time rooting/flashing.
hhmmm 63 views and nobody able to help?
Currently stuck on this ROM, which is horrible because maps doesn't work well, pandora crashes, UI fc's left & right and to top it off the phone is sluggish in every way possible.
Unified Toolkit not working, drivers installed properly, ADB visible in device manager, debugging enabled yet phone can not be seen by Toolkit.
I really don't want to switch back to my cracked S3 but I'm not left with many options considering my note 2 is barely usable now.
Is anyone out there... there.... ere... ere... ere.....
lol seriously feeling like I'm the only person left in these forums.
Use odin to flash recovery but make sure you uncheck reboot option. Once flashed remove battery and while doing the recovery hotkeys insert battery. Now wipe everything and flash another rom.

here's what I've done now;
-Flashed newest TWRP via Odin
-Wiped & flashed Rwilco12's NE2
-Rebooted and phone booted yipeeee
-No cellular connection, crap phone i hate you
-Rebooted to recovery & flashed NE2 Modem
-Rebooted again and recovery is now gone
So either I get root but can't use the phone as a PHONE
or I loose Root and get basically the same POS I started with.
I've given up on eye candy, custom rom, custom settings and my expectations have dwindled down to just ANY ROM + Root + Tether yet that can't even be accomplished. I know I'm doing something wrong but at this point I'm over 10 hours into trying to figure this out and have no idea what to do next. Anything?
Finally:
CWM Recovery - OmniROM - Micro Gapps - Devil Kernel - Rooted
In case someone is in my shoes and hating life, I'll save you a lot of headache by telling you that TWRP recovery does not work for 90% of the ROMs that are still available for this phone so use Phil'z CWM

Twrp 2.8.6.x works for almost every rom but you will find most users recommend philz. I as a wantabe dev will suggest philz 6.0.7.9 expect in a few rare cases with aroma installer needing twrp. Personally I have philz 6.9.7.9, twrp 2.8.6.0, shift dual recovery and devil dual recovery zip on my external sdcard. This way I always have what I need depending on what I am doing.
All this info along with solutions to every problem is here on xda already. It may take some time to find everything but really the users should do his homework before doing anything to the phone anyways.
Also if you read the rom thread (Alliance) you would know why you lost root. Simply put you updated supersu app and binary. It is a known issue on every ne2 based custom rom for this device.

Hey thanks for the feedback.
Almost everything I tried on twrp failed, when flashing anything I follow all instructions in the OP's first page. In Alliance's case the resolution to the issue does not come up till page 23, I'll just be honest & say I haven't and probably will never read every page of comments before flashing a ROM, 10 pages okay but beyond that it's more trouble than it's worth.
Can that same issue happen with all other ROMs? on Omni I just ran Root Checker & it said not properly installed!

I will read every page myself even if it takes a week. You say reading it is more trouble than it is worth which is why you had that issue with Alliance. Same goes for your omni issue.
If you don't want to read that is up to you. A google search will normally help with common issues. I dont mind helping but you have to help yourself first. Not to be rude but I wont answer your omni question because you have not looked. Ypir issue is the number 1 issue omni users have.

I see you edited that a bunch. I dont mind helping. I have been helping so far. Now about the omni gps. I only know on possible fix bit it is a pain.
1. Flash stock/stock based rom
2. Get gps lock
3. While locked and in app reboot to recovery
4. Wipe and install aosp rom & gapps or restore aosp backup
Then you might get gps lock.

reading back I realized some clarity on my part would have been helpful rather than make a general statement.
So the issue with reading 25, 50 or a 100 pages isn't by choice (may have sounded arrogant the way I said it at first) but I work 50 hrs a week, I do work on my home myself, I rent out rooms to students, I have other projects going, etc. so a very very busy lifestyle. Not to mention the daily crap that tends to come up all the time the moment I get home from work so in short, I really can't afford the time to read in that much detail whether I want to or not.
Regardless, by no means am I lazy when it comes to research, notice my post count? yet I've been here since 2009, and since 09 I've had at least 8 different phones (windows phones too) I really try to figure out everything I need on my own so in this case I spent 3 days working on my initial issues, after that I posted this thread which was 8 days ago and had it figured out and finished yesterday (a few bugs aside), that's easily 10 days I spent at least an hour or two a day working on one thing. Surely you understand how frustrating that must begin to feel.
Regarding my last reply, haha I had to delete most of it because I realized I was beginning to take my frustration out on you when in fact you're the only person who actually offered help (still very very thankful) and to top it off I screwed up the rest of the reply when I mentioned GPS, got that mixed up with the topic we were actually discussing (losing root) this happened because I was reading through the GPS issues before I got to your reply and yah mixed it all up, so again apologies for the lack of clarity and thanks for your last reply, it's more straight forward than all the comments I found on that issue.
You won't have to explain anything else I promise haha and I did all this just now but want to verify I did it correctly so I don't come back to it again. After flashing ROM/Gaps/Kernel & supersu, never update supersu after running rom correct?. Root verified as of 30 minutes ago.
GPS, this one is a big big deal because I use it for work but I had already found the answer pretty quickly as I had read something about it before I even flashed Omni.
I do know how frustrating it can be. I have been in worse spots and had to create my own fixes which I have shared here. As far as time goes I understand that being a parent of 7 children.
I am still active here and always willing to help others long as they help themselves also. We seem to have gotten off badly. While some of your post seemed you had done nothing to help yourself. So lets forget earlier stuff and move on.
Yes you seem to have all the steps correct.
FYI android 5.0-5.0.2 all have gps issues but there is a flashable fix. Most new 5.1.1 builds have gps fixed.
If you run into any issues feel free to ask but include steps you have taken to fix the issue. The more you tell the better help you can get. Plus others wont think you are wanting to be spoon fed.

haha thanks for understanding, very much appreciated.
7 kids??? where do you find the time? my situation does not fare in comparison
Now that I've resolved the "failed" issue when flashing ROMs I may be brave enough to test some 5.x.x out, I had stuck to 4.x.x because I was under the impression that they were more stable...
Would you be willing to recommend any specific ROMs based on our discussion?
By the way, I tend to ramble on and on most forums that's a bit faux pas so I've sorta been conditioned to keep it sweet & short, clearly that is a bad approach on here, we live & learn

Well I personally have a Frankenstein device. It started out as a sprint l900 but I removed the sdcard/sim board and put a n7100 board so I can use a cricket sim. This causes issues with calls on aosp so I run modified t0lte (n7105 international) roms.
As far as 5.1.1 roms I personally build 2. First is CyanideL (highly modified cm base) and broken (a highly modified slimroms base). Those two are really the only two worth flashing. There is also cm and I think a liquid rom but they don't have the features of the two I compile.
If you want a stock based rom I did the Community Rom (s5/n3 based) which is stable with only two issues. Spen clipping does not work and updating suoersu causes loss of root.

wow CyanideL is you, how did I miss that?? looking at too many ROMs is how I suppose...
Going to CyanideL asap. Seriously thank you for keeping the CyanideL thread up to date, it drove me crazy to read & read & read in ROM threads for a while until I decided "okey let's give this one a try" only to find out that the download links are broken or the files are no longer there, had that issue with Omni till I found comparable files on another website (gapps I think it was) and Phill'z CWM thread has a dead end download link as well.
I was really really wanting CyanideL to work for me last week (when I was having the flashing issue) and was so bummed out every time I failed to flash it. I plan to make a donation as soon as I get it working, I feel like I owe you simply for the time you've spent on my thread alone and of course I love supporting people who support families :highfive:

TWRP Help

It's been awhile since I've been on any Android forum. But recently I got a Redmi Note 8, and I looked up the whole process on Unlocking, Unlocking the Bootloader, and Rooting. I usually use a Galaxy phone and due to certain features possible being unusable, I refrain some doing any type of mod to it. SO i was excited to mod the gingko. I followed all the steps on the guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/re...de-unlocking-bootloader-twrp-rooting-t4031831
Did everything succesfully, although I cant get the phone to pass ctsProfile in Magisk, but thats another unrelated problem. Anyway, I am new to using TWRP, previous phones I used to flash mods used CWM so I'm bit unfamiliar with TWRP troubleshooting. I tried searching for this already but couldnt find anything. Im tying to create a backup but whenever it tried to backup the system image, it fails. I tried backing up the boot, data, and system image. System Image fails. I tried backing up all partitions and it still fails on the System Image. I'm excited to flash the roms on here but dont want to revert to full stock everytime something comes up and have to re-configure the phone. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
im like you, im used to flashing samsungs htc's etc, seems like new phone roms are different, to say marshmallow lollipop kitkat etc, im reluctant as you
i used to backup in twrp, system, data(excl storage)cache, boot, modem, efs, now its all different, i have found no definitive answer as to what to backup and not, i read destroyed system etc bricked etc etc, i have never bricked a device, but this new system confuses me, no do's or dont's, or this will happen... it would be nice to have, dont so this or x will happen, flashing homebrew vs xiaomi roms, this will happen, do this for homebrew, this for xiaomi roms seem convoluted compared to the past.

I definitely believe the earlier days were easier. This was back during the GingerBread days, then HoneyComb was skipped by my device at the time and ICS became the big bad boy on the playground. Less security measures, easier exploits, etc. A lot of stuff has remain the same. I think the hardest part with Xiaomi was waiting the 168 hours to unlock the phone.
Also I think I answered my original question. i had my backup set to go to the sd card and when I changed it to internal storage, it finally backed up all. I did a little research and from what I saw you should be backing up boot, data, and system. I saw system image and not system so I was confused. Looked up a couple more things and just like backing up a computer, it doesnt hurt to backup everything. So I backed up every single partition.
I also know I can backup using adb, just wanna make sure I have a backup on my phone in case I'm nowhere near my computer. 1 backup on phone, 1 backup on computer. Not really worried about bricking my little gingko since it's not the actual phone I used.

Oh man, CWM recovery, the good old days lol
Which TWRP version are you using? Official? Try unofficial one https://forum.xda-developers.com/re...ecovery-unofficial-twrp-xiaomi-redmi-t3997267
If still no luck, try PB recovery or OrangeFox, its based on TWRP with theme and more features.

haha cwm vs twrp tried both over the years, different phones etc, twrp imho had a better interface, and updates..but it had one glitch, sometimes on versions it would not save region and time, but thats all the by and by now, i assume..we have orangefox now, nad has that fixed the time error?
im still reluctant to root my note 8t, probably sell it, as it has not led notification sadly, probably get the note 8 pro.

I was using the official one, I think its version 3.3.1.0 or something like that. I think I'm gonna try the unofficial cause I want to flash CrDroid. Seems like the ROM which the least amount of issues but I'll probably flash a new rom every week to see which one is best.
Telegram? Is that like discord? I'll have to look more into this. But yeah good old CWM days. I think the last time I did any flashing was back in like 2013-14.

Unoffical one is 3.3.1.10, just give it a try.
Yeah, like a discord, messanger app basicly.
There is custom roms and kernel which you can only find in telegram group
Oh, every Android 10 custom rom had issue with camera. Yellow tint and aux camera. So, if camera is important to you just stick in miui roms for the moment, xiaomi eu for example.
But, if you just want some adventure for your phone, go for it. Try GSI too, there is alot of it.

Camera isnt a big deal. I've seen that all AOSP roms have that camera issues from reading the reads. Kinda sucky for people that want to use daily drivers.

Question Opinions about preferred custom roms differences and why do you choose it ?

Wanted to keep a thread for each one opinion on custom roms and why do you choose the rom you are using?
i have tried al custom roms and i always love to flash different ones,
What do you notice regarding stability? performance? battery ? bugs? etc in the rom you are using.
Love to hear all your opinions on this matter.
last time i flashed a custom ROM 10years ago. No need to flash anything since. All factory stock.
All i did for every phone is bloatware removal via ADB
I've only ever used the stock rom since I've had this phone. Using A11, A12 and now A13.
Only 1 annoyances during my time with this phone and stock ROM. ( Camera related blue light bleeding in a very bright artificially lit scenario )
Always stock rom with Root these days
Holy smokes. It's ok to not answer a question if it doesn't apply. Pardon my double negative.
I've been contemplating moving on from to stock to custom, when I came across this thread and thought, well this will be great; several viewpoints about several custom roms, but instead came across a few responses that didn't answer the question that was asked.
It's hard to sift though the roms' threads because, in most cases, you'll see "this is a great rom, everything works perfectly", almost immediately followed by "stuck in a boot loop", "looks like msm again", or "xyz is borked, please fix".
So, to reiterate og's question, what are the thoughts on the custom roms (not stock) for the 1+9pro (not a device from your past)?
Nameless seems to be the most stable out of the custom roms, but lacks more in depth customization. CrDroid and Watchdog are better for customization, but more features usually means more bugs.
I've tried tons of the roms on here and will probably continue to do so as stock OOS just doesn't do it for me. Battery isn't ideal, and aesthetically it's hard to configure to what I like. It definitely works for a lot of people as it has many features and is mostly stable.

I'm currently on stag os 13, beta from october with a pair of important bugs... however probably I will flash another one tomorrow. I have to decide first which one xD
However I would ask you what are the steps now for flashing another android 13 rom, considering I'm on android 13 and I prefer not do a clean install (dont want to do any wipes as I have my phone tweaked and fully oriented for privacy)
Los20 Google free
Without gapps, store and ps apps
been on nameless for about 6 months, no complaints
Running my own fork of LineageOS 19 with features cherry-picked from other ROMs (nothing against them but I don't need the extra 30 fazillion features they offer when a handful of features I want does the job just fine). Once LineageOS 20 builds resume with fixes for some of the major issues in place (see the LOS 20 thread for OP9Pro), I'll be upgrading to the New Hotness (I've already made the necessary changes and tested them on my OP7Pro test phone, I'm just waiting for the all-clear for the OP9Pro).

Oof, that's a tough one. You could *attempt* to do a dirty flash of the rom you're wanting to flash. Although, I wouldn't recommend. I've read that people do it with little side effects, but I've also seen people with lots of bugs.
What I typically do is use swiftbackup for SMS and apps, then just restore those on the new rom. But, depending on what tweaks you've applied, that might make things more difficult. As far as I know, there's not a way to restore everything, especially if the tweaks are specific to the rom. Maybe someone else might know a way?
I kept mine as stock w/root since I got it. Just reflashed and I was blown away with how much nicer it feels. Even with the amount of work I'd done to kill bloatware, background processes, etc on the stock rom.

thanks for your answer mate
I didn't touch anything specific to the rom nor kernel. Only much app config and some processes freezing.
So I will save apps+data with my old friend titanium backup pro, don't know another method to do :/
By the way, I will lose root if I do clean flash or can I save that any way?
I guess a clean flash instructions should be something like this?
Extract recovery package zip
Reboot to bootloader & connect your phone to PC
Double click on flash.bat
Reboot to recovery home page & tap Factory reset > Format data/factory reset
Back to recovery home page & tap > Apply update > Apply from ADB
Now sideload rom using command adb sideload <rom_filename>.zip
Now reboot to system.

Of course, glad I could contribute. Swiftbackup will do data for apps as well, but titanium backup should work too if that's what you prefer.
Yep, there's a couple ways to do it, and that will work. As far as root, you will definitely lose it, but you can either sideload magisk:
- download magisk APK and rename to .zip file
- after sideloading rom finishes, reboot to recovery
- sideload magisk.zip
Or
- follow root guide on this forum
Tried about every rom posted that I can find. A lot of nice roms, depends on what you want for customization. The one I prefer is Xtended. Been back and forth since A11 each one a little nicer. The latest -- v5 is best for me. I always go back to it. Currently on stock OOS13. Not all that bad with little tweaking. My disappointment is the lack of kernel development for the phone after A11. I guess the sources released by OnePlus a mess. Waiting for Ancient to be released. Could be nice.

Haha, glad I could help! Memory is my biggest downfall as well, so you're not alone lol
Other backup options I like - tarb and Neo Backup. Swift I don't like because it only stores the latest backup, and the google play tied licensing is annoying when bouncing between various devices.
Used to love titanium backup but it never works successfully for me anymore
