i'm really stuck and could use some help please.
i managed to unlock the bootloader and get CM recovery installed, but i cannot manage to get a ROM on the phone.
it's not rooted. i have attempted to sideload both CM 12 and Z1c_DooMLoRD_AdvStkKernel_FW-114_v01.img with no success. when i boot the phone, i get a sony splash screen and then active black, but cannot connect it to my computer as a connected device as the computer does not recognize it. i am able to see the device via fastboot and adb in terminal.
i'm using a mac. i'm an extreme noob and i have no idea what to do. i have tried following the instructions on several sites, including many different areas of xda, but frankly, i'm stuck and would really appreciate help. i just want to have a working device.
running 10.9.5 on a mac mini
have installed sony bridge for mac, but it does not see a device connected.
any help is appreciated.
thanks in advance.
EDITED TO ADD:
ok, i fixed it. i installed (using ./adb sideload) the correct SuperSU version, and then installed (using ./adb sideload) CM12 and GAPPS 5.0.x, and it all appears to be working.
if anyone is in a similar situation, i would say, take a break, remember to breathe, and go slow. don't get frustrated. that was the deal breaker for me. once i gave myself some time and space to think about it, i figured out that what was stopping my progress was that the phone was not rooted, so i couldn't install anything on it yet. patience is key.

unfortunately, the flashtool is for a pc, which i do not have, hence the reason i was not able to use it.
can you please recommend any kind of solution for mac?

there is not a mac version. the only think resembling a mac version is the sony bridge for mac, which i stated twice was not recognizing my phone.
the point is sort of moot, because i figured it out.
Wonder why there is a link to the Mac version then.
not sure. perhaps you can show me where.
I have already given you the link to the site. In regards to your edit in the OP, you don't need to be rooted to use the flashtool.

well, the link you previously provided me shows that the flashtool is for pc, and the mac tool, which i tried to use, was not working. i have resolved my issue, so again, it's a moot point, but if you're going to be telling me that there is a sony flashtool that is for mac, and telling me that the link you have given me is it, then i think i have to stand by what i said before.

thanks for that. i was looking in the wrong place, it would have been really helpful to have had a direct link, i appreciate you providing one. probably could have saved me a very large headache, but the upside is, i was able to puzzle it out for myself and solve it, which is good for my own learning and development. so there's that.
i was looking at the sony flashtool, which only has a pc version. and i kept explaining that but clearly was not understood.
appreciate the help!
You obviously didn't look at all otherwise when told to download the Mac version you would have gone to the download page and found it, why you've not done that only you know, and the problem wasn't me not understanding you it was you thinking you know better than long time and more knowledgeable members telling you there actually is a Mac version. Anyway, you got there in the end.

actually, i did look. but you're going to assume whatever you assume.
i was in the midst of it, i was very frustrated and very lost, i looked at the entire page (clicking on the link for the xperia x1, maybe i was in the wrong place)
i found what i found and it wasn't the correct thing, it is what it is.

I assume what I assume based on what you wrote and once again have been shown to be right again in my assumptions, the first 3 links are Welcome, Gallery and Download, why you've not thought to click on Download is quite baffling when I suggested that you Download the Mac version, even more so when you continued to state there wasn't one, anyway.
Your issue is resolved and you've learned something new along the way.

Hello people
I'm a user of the Arc s and who has spent over 5 hrs trying to root my phone but with no luck,
I've tried every way of rooting I could find but they ether don't work or I couldn't download the required files.
Meaning when I try and download the flashtools, A i don't know which one if the correct link because theres like 600 links or something and, B the person who uploaded the files had to use a server with a 1 download a hr limet and I'm NOT paying anything or signing up to the hosting place.
When I try one of the easy ways, like the one click app way they don't do anything, like i get cmd popping up for like 2 seconds then closing but nothing happens.
Just so you guys know, I'm not a noob. I have done these things before on different phones, but A it's been a long time scenes I've rooted anything before and B my Arc needs to be rooted in a very strange way which I've never seen before.
So the bottom line is i need help, can anyone help? anything would be useful.
Flashtool has 3 links on the main page ...
http://androxyde.github.com/
All 3 worked fine for me. Let's start there
What build are you on? If it is .62/69 then the one click method its never going to work.
If on .42 then the one click will work
if on ics the easy rooting will work add I have used them both.
Flashtools look for version .7.0.1
When using three one click rooting phone needs to be powered on. Connect via usb run file via PC then follow the promts on screen.
I an not in front of PC so cant post links.

Ok i will do that later. one thing I would like to add is that in all the time I've been using android, I've never had to do anything with unlocking bootloaders.
but I'll come to that after I'm rooted.
Ok well I'm just having bad day,
I've tryed this one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601038
and It doesn't work, I just get waiting for device and nothing happens. I've waited like 30min with nothing. and yes I have got usb debugging on and unknown sources on aswell.
Any ideas on what can be wrong?
ok I've had a bit more luck, I've found the newer version of the program and now it runs through the process but it just fails, I don't get root when the program sas it's fished :S.

Ok well I know for a fact I'm on ics and I'm on the latest version of Sony official ics.
Then the following method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330314
works like a charm and it's easy as hell.
Thats the one I tried at the start. I still get the can't mount system error.
Theres probably something simple that I'm missing but I have no clue what it could be.
OK so we got a SE Experia Arc S LT18i with 1253-8238_4.0.1.A.0.165 ('prototype' model on loan from a friend = prehistoric!) and looking into upgrading the thing if at all possible.
So if I am correct it's a case of: 1st: Root, 2nd: Unlock bootloader, 3rd: Install recovery, 4th: Flash ROM of choice
Bootloader is locked and phone not rooted.
Tried using Flashtool to root phone but it is greyed out so tried Tools > Root > Force zergRush = fail, (not tried Force psneuter/Emulator ?)
Tried unlocking bootloader using Flashtool, but this also failed (SE unlock website wanted IMEI code one digit less than the phone reports?!! got a code by ditching the first 0 of the IMEI, but didn't work anyway - crashed phone)
Attempted to root using command line ADB method to push zergRush and execute the script, but this too doesn't work (phone crashes and reboots).
Fastboot? I have it installed but not yet come across any how-to's that use this (did I say yet? )
The apps available on Play Store seem to be automations of above methods for one-click users.
Further exhaustive reading/searching here and on talk.sonymobile.com leads me to believe that the first step might be to flash a different kernel version before it's possible to root, after which everything else should fall into place...I'm up for trying this but of course don't want to risk bricking the phone, so backing up first would be a good plan, *but* I need root to be able to install recovery! I know enough about booting operating systems to know that changing kernel version with a locked boot loader might just result in bork! This is where the expertise of you guys comes in!! Maybe you know that flashing another (similar?) kernel will be fine with Fashtool even without unlocking bootloader and rooting phone? Perhaps I missed a simple and easy way of rooting? Any suggestions very welcome - thanks in advance!
FYI: *I only run Linux* so pointing me at any of the windows tools on offer is of no help to me
Oh and PS: yes I have searched and found a ton of helpful info, well actually *way too much* info to the point of saturation and confusion!!

Well it's not the quantity of info, but the quality of info! Failing that the filtration system used to distill the good stuff out!
Anyroads, I was still hoping for someone to chip in with something like "Yeah go for it, that will work fine"! or "Don't do it, try this instead"!
I'm believing from my readings so far, that short of flashing an incorrect radio, or interrupting a flash process, it isn't easily possible to brick an Arc?

If you're experiencing errors, please report them either in the thread or PM me.
Please report ANY errors or typos you come across, I made this in 4 hours without a single break, so there's bound to be an error somewhere
What's new:
-Completely rewritten (ACTUALLY written, not VB)
-Even simpler! NO MORE COPYING!
-Even smaller in disk size!
-No tutorial needed! Yes, it's that easy -- just read carefully and don't panic
There's still no way to:
-relock the bootloader
-flash FTF files
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
Note: Inside the Fastboot.rar, there are fastboot drivers for 2012 Xperias. Install them if you dont have them yet. Those are the only useful files you need from that folder, everything else (both adb and fastboot) are already contained in the new BU.zip!
TESTING:
Reported working Windows versions:
Windows 7 x86
Windows 7 x64
Windows Vista x86

Then test it and report your phone model and windows version (x64/x86, service pack etc.) -- send me a PM

Thanks for helping me and all those noobs out
About the attachments:
-Fastboot; contains adb and fastboot, plus Xperia 2012 Windows drivers
-BootloaderUnlock; contains the old PMFT - version 2 (kind of useless unless you understand everything it says in there)
-nexus; the NEW PMFT - version 3 -- if you already have the drivers, this is all you need
someone755 said:
I've been getting some questions on PM lately, about 'how to unlock my bootloader'...
So, fed up with those infinite PMs, I quickly put this together (30 minutes, not much).
It's not much, and I've only tested it for one minute, but it should help the average noob user get their bootloader unlocked.
(I've only tested this on a x86 Win7 PC, so please help me find out where this works on.)
So, the basic idea is, that the noob user extracts the attached adb and fastboot .zip file and extracts it to disk C: (I'll make options for other drives later on, I just need to know whether or not this works). The user then opens up the program inside BootloaderUnlock (and installs it), and, after many warnings, gets to a screen where he is told to input his Bootloader unlock code (obtained from Sony's website).
The program then warns the user a little more, just to make sure he understands, and then, two lines of text show up.
The user enters those lines of text into the console window (the fastboot.exe he extracted at the beginning) and Viola!
If all steps have been done correctly, he now has an unlocked bootloader
It's a simple, yet fool-proof concept, tested on a complete phone moron (after reading some instructions on Sony's unlock site).
Please help me test this, as this may be really helpful to those that don't understand FlashTool and don't have an idea how to do it via the official method.
Also, if you don't understand, there are some instructions within the program (written in VB, so you may need NET framework... MAY need it...)
Thanks for helping me and all those noobs out
Note: extract the fastboot.rar to C:, so you will have the fastboot.exe in C:\Fastboot\fastboot.exe
Note: Inside the Fastboot.rar, there are fastboot drivers for Xperias. Install then if you dont have them yet.
Note: The BootloaderUnlock.rar is a visual basic program. Please help me test it on different Windows systems (XP, Vista, 7, 8, 2000; all both x86 and x64)

Yeah, it's actually the same as Sony's way, this program just tells the user what to write into the CMD window.
You can't brick your phone with this, because it either suceeds or fails. Either gain or no gain (and no loss) for the user...

i think he was referring to:
IF you are so beginner that you aren't able to even unlock your bootloader
THEN you could be so newbie to brick it
That's possible, if you're pointing to the fact they could brick their phone after unlocking the bootloader.
But before the unlock, no, it wouldn't be possible...
But hey, some people might have trouble with windows and are new to it. (I know many linux users that are forced to use windows for their phones that could use tools like this for their phones (not Sony, but others...)...)
So can this way unlock any bootloader even if it says bootloader locked? Thanks

It's because companies like AT&T give locked down phones away for free with a service contract. That way they can lock some services to make you pay more. For example AT&T makes you pay an additional monthly fee for the use of tethering (only when you use the att stock Rom, it's free on generic version )
From Jaramie's LT28at
2012Xperia SOFT-BRICK Recovery Thread
So I guess it's great in my country;
you don't get a 'free' phone, you pay at least 1€ (depending on the plan you chose; I chose the one where I get to pay 370€ for a nozomi)
You can always trade your phone on Swappa (you have loads of ads on CM's sites and forums) and get an unlockable one...
what is the difference between this tool and this one?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1794800
This one, you can't flash things with, and you don't need a ton of downloads...
Yours is actually a program that uses FlashTool... It has flashtool included in the libs, which means:
1. You download the program AND the giant FlashTool
2. It can flash FTF, IMG and SIN files (because this is flashtool after all...)
I came up with my method for people with bad internet and limited storage...
It actually is the official method, but with a "paste-press-copy-paste" procedure, although the main idea is about the same as all the others...
Basically, every method is based on the official way, but there's a bit of variation here and there...

Hey Guys,
I am a Noob and have been trying to unlock my bootloader for about a week now, I have tried a few methods without any joy.
I will give this a go and will report back if it works or not.
Your problem might be one of these, if it doesn't work:
1. Your phone is not in fastboot mode -- did you check that?
2. You don't have the right drivers installed on your PC -- or do you?
3. Your phone's bootloader may not be unlockable -- now, if you didn't check that, you really are a noob.
4. Your unlock code is incorrect -- that was the case with me, but in the end that was the only problem...

Hi,
Thanks for the reply, the problem i have is with the drivers. I have tried different solutions as posted here and on the web.
But still could not get the drivers to work??
I will try this method as it states the drivers are included. If it all works awesome, if not then I fail and will forever be stuck with stock rom's.
Which windows are you running (vista, 7, 8, is it 32 or 64 bit?)?
Also, did you try with FlashTool's drivers?

I'm running windows 7 on a 64 bit laptop.
Tried the flashtool drivers also but still no joy, I check in device management for S1 and each time there is a problem installing the drivers.
I still have a PC running vista so might give that a try if all else fails.

I have an ATT ZenFone 2E that I rooted successfully with this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3116531). Due to an error on my part(fat finger) I accidentally started the OTA update. Now when I try to boot the phone all I get is the AT&T logo/splash screen. I can get it to go into recovery mode and it also will connect via ADB. I have tried flashing the UL-ASUS_Z00D-WW-12.16.5.30-user.zip firmware via ADB fastboot but I get an error saying firmware is wrong carrier ATT (WW). Am I using the wrong firmware for AT&T? I have searched all over and cannot find any ZenFone 2 firmware other than WW, TW, and CN. Any help or suggestions much appreciated.

Still no luck. I'm sure if we could find the AT&T firmware we would be able to recover. Unfortunately it appears it is not available on ASUS support and AT&T doesn't even provide firmware. Our only hope may be from a backup of another device that isn't bricked.
Does anybody know if we could possibly use the temporary CWM recovery used in the root method to flash to another ROM that is compatible with this device? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Are there any details I can provide that would be helpful in finding a solution to recover this device? I've seen a few other people are having the same issue as I am and I would like to help them as well if I can get mine fixed. Thanks

Just out of curiosity have you tried running the xoa_unroot.bat while your device is in recovery/fastboot mode? Im not sure if it will help but I've found in other threads that to avoid soft bricking your device you must run the unroot prior to applying the OTA update. I'm sure it's probably too late but maybe worth a shot. I'm going to try it when I get home from work today.

Wait, are you bricked and tried using that as the fix? I cant post links but Check out Asus, They have Firmware, Kernel (havent checked but read it earlier today), and Boot Unlock that you can get right from (assuming you have an account) My Products.
Also... Has anyone used that method recently?

Sorry I will give credit to DavePmer for his guide in minute, but qouting him for some reason wouldnt let me post, even when I removed the links? anyways I'll edit and give credit I promise
So my phone is stuck on the Asus Logo, I downloaded all of this and followed the instructions all the way up to:
11) now the fun part. open your microsd card and check the folder TWRP\BACKUPS see if it has a folder named
01234567890123456789 if it does great if not, not a problem just copy all the system files from the folder
you extracted TWRP-zf2e-ATT_12.16.10.7 to your microsd card TWRP\BACKUP\01234567890123456789\ whatever folder you have next\ in other words, replace your system.ext4.win000 files with my system.ext4.win000 file.
Replace your system.ext4.win001 with mine, and replace system.ext4.win00.md5 with mine as well as system.ext4.win001.md5 when done safely dismount the microsd card.
It then occurred to me that i should be more careful this time around... This was from October and although I ran across links saying for the most part that this was a good shot for fixing my ZE500CL, Z00D or whatever. But things have changed since then and I was wondering if this is still the best/easiest/safe route. I learned pretty quick that over looking things like OTA/Root or in my case Making assumptions is a fast path to really doing a number on your phone. (Honestly I just started even giving thought to rooting my phone, just considered them back ups I kept in a box). I now have the itch to do this right so hoping to fix this and go about this the right way.
Thanks for any input.
Currently DLing RussaiNBeaR, went and bought a card reader/writer. I was going to Download the firmware, kernel and boot unlock tool but currently staying at a place where im getting 160kbs on my DL's. So if I can get away with davepmer's guide that would be great, or something other or smaller than downloading 4gbs on this Internet Connection.
EDIT: Forgot to add that I haven't completed this step yet because the wording kind of tripped me up. And I want to do this right. When he says "in other words replace your system.ext4.win000 files with my system.ext4.win000 file." and then goes on and 3 more to the list. Does that mean only copy and replace those 4? or does that include all system.(whatever).(extension) files? Im sure it sounds really dumb or noobish but the fact that the next step is using twrp to restore using system only makes me afraid to do this part wrong.

So I had a rooted dev version htc one m9. I relocked the bootloader and was trying to run RUU for nougat. The RUU reaches till the screen of accepting the terms and conditions, but then doesnt proceed. My phone is not detected by adb. I cannot do anything to get the phone back to life. I am S-On. Any help will be highly appreciated. Thank you

Augh - I ran into this problem myself. It has something to do with Microsoft Visual C++. I ended up installing every version of the redistributable packages between 2005 and 2015. Once all of them were installed, the RUU executable worked perfectly.
Alternatively, I think there is a zip file you can use to apply the RUU via the sd card method. I'm sorry I can't point you in the right direction for that, but searching around the M9 forums might be helpful.

Well, if you can boot into download mode, your phone should be detectable on your computer. Alternatively, the sd card method doesn't require ADB.
Peace,

Unfortunately, that was the method I used: install all of the requisite Microsoft Visual C++ packages boot my phone into download mode, and install the RUU executable. I used the Marshmallow RUU and then downloaded the OTA and installed that.
The sd card method is outlined in Flippy498's spreadsheet. However, I don't know where there is a zip RUU for the developer edition - that'll require some searching around on the forums or another XDA member's direction.

So before installing C++ packages, you were not able to boot your phone into download mode? Or did you have the same problem of RUU stuck at the terms and conditions part!? I am sorry if I am bothering you too much, but I am really badly stuck. Also what all packages did you install, do you remember?

I didn't have any trouble booting my phone. It sounds like your phone is having issues apart from the computer. Maybe we troubleshoot that first - what can you boot into (normal/system, recovery, bootloader, download)?

Okay, so theoretically you've got enough functionality to apply an RUU via the sd card method or via your computer.
The most reliable way is via your sd card, as outlined in Flippy498's spreadsheet.
Searching around, I've found the RUU zip files for the developer edition of the M9. - turns out that reading the sticky posts in the forums pays off!

My pleasure - we're pretty blessed with folks who've paved the way, particularly Flippy498. I'll look forward to hearing how it goes. Good luck!

So I used the RUU 3.35.617.31. Now I do receive the OTA, but it does not install!
Any idea about that?

I don't have any ideas there I think at this point I would apply the Nougat RUU directly via the SD card method or the executable. Either of those will be less messy than trying to figure out why the over-the-air update won't install.
