Hi,
I´ve had a problem for about a month now. I always look for the solution before even thinking about creating a new thread, but this time I´m stumped, I really don´t know what to do. I have a HTC One M8 Developer Unlocked edition; I bought it off of Amazon. A few months ago I rooted it because I wanted to use Pushbullet. After a few tries I got it working with TWRP.
A few weeks ago I learned that Lollipop was being released and I wanted to upgrade my phone, unfortunately you can´t get it unless the phone is unrooted, so I tried that. I followed theunlockr guide "How to unroot the htc one m8" up to the point of switching S-ON.
After that I tried to upgrade to Lollipop, it didn´t work. The phone would get stuck in the installing screen, and then a red triangle with an exclamation mark would appear. This has happened every single time I tried to install the upgrade.
After that I tried to reset to factory using RUU, but I couldn´t do it. I got the error 150… Now I have a supposedly stock ROM but I can´t install Lollipop… Can you help me? This whole story comes to this.. How can I revert my M8 back to stock so I can get Lollipop?
Right now it has S-ON, if that helps.
Thanks in advance and sorry for my English, it´s not my native language.
1. There is no need to change S-Off to S-On
2. There is no need to unroot when you're not sure how-to
3. When the phone get stuck in the installing screen, and then a red triangle with an exclamation mark appear, press and hold volume up and tap power button once, it will give you the error log then you'll know what are the problems that stopping the update
4. When you use a RUU when S-On, you need to relock bootloader before you run RUU

Ok thanks, I´ll try that as soon as I get home. What do you think its better, turn S-OFF and then run RUU or relock the bootloader first?

When S-Off - just run RUU
When S-On - relock bootloader then run RUU

Ok I did what you told me. I got this message:

That's your problem.
You have a Dev Edition installed but using EU stock recovery.
You need Dev Edition stock recovery.
If you can't find one, copy the OTA zip from internal storage/Download folder to PC. Open the OTA zip with 7-zip, open firmware.zip, extract out recovery.img
This recovery.img is what you need.
Or try this one : http://sourceforge.net/projects/htconem8/files/Recovery/3.28.1540.5_recovery.img/download

Hi! Sorry for taking so long, had to work.
I searched for the HTC ONE M8 Developer Edition but could't find it.. So I downloaded the OTA, extracted the recovery.img but I don't know what to do now, I tried to run the Recovery from the bootloader but I still get the red triangle with the exclamation mark.
What can I do now?
Thanks.

I guess some of the system files are not pure stock.
The easiest way is run RUU.
1. Download Dev Ed RUU : http://dl3.htc.com/application/RUU_...G_20.68.4196.01_F_release_411207_signed_2.exe
2. RUU will wipe all in internal storage. Make a backup of your files before you run RUU
3. Put your device on bootloader/fastboot mode
4. If your device is S-On
a-relock bootloader - fastboot oem lock
b-run RUU (select run as administrator in your windows explorer context menu)
5. If your device is S-Off - run RUU (select run as administrator in your windows explorer context menu)

It worked, after I ran the RUU it automatically installed Lollipop. I can't thank you enough, really. One last thing before I stop bothering you, for future reference, how can I check the version of my software, how can I know if I have the BrightstarUS, instead of the EU version?
Anyway, the last thing is not that important. I really thank you!

Great :good::good:
How to know ? Simple
Check the OS no. written on bootloader or run command fastboot getvar all
You'll see the version-main no.
x.xx.401.x is EU
x.xx.1540.x is Dev Ed (BrightstarUS)

Hello everyone, I know there is a bunch of topics about similar issues but I still can't get out of that trap.
Here we go, I initially wanted to flash my recovery back to stock to be able to install the HTC's OTA (I was using TWRP), I guess it went terribly wrong, because when I launched the update it crashed and now I only can access my bootloader (fastboot available). Everytime I try to access the OS or the recovery it just get stuck with the HTC logo. I tried to flash the boot.img (stock), went back and forth with TWRP and stock recovery (the flashing works, but I still can't boot any of those things, stuck). I am unlocked (still have the HTC .bin in case I have to relock). I am S-ON so I am not supposed to be able to brick it completely. Moreover I can't seem to find a RUU that fits my radio (1.16.2133156). Screenshot of my "allvars" in attachment.
Thanks a lot, I don't really know what to do as I tried everything I found(except RUU, yet).
-- Edit for clarity --
My phone is not bound to any carrier and West Europe
Peace.
Relock your bootloader (fastboot oem lock) and run the 4.16.401.10 RUU and you should be sorted

Sorry for double posting, I finally downloaded the RU (the same number as previously said) and I get an error (12 signature verify fail). My device is well relocked. As I understand I must be S-OFF for the RUU to work (European phone), which is problematic as I cannot load anything. I am trying to download the RUU again, in case I got a corrupted file...
You do't need to be S-OFF, only if you want to do some other things. You just need to be relocked and it should work fine
Here is what I get, I am re-downloading the RUU from xda's source. With the crap internet I have it takes a while... Thank you for your time.
I renamed a little the file for you to see the version I used (just in case)
When using RUU zip, you need htc_fastboot.exe instead the usual fastboot.exe
Get it here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52280888&postcount=1
fastboot oem rebootRUU
htc_fastboot flash zip ruu.zip
But when using RUU exe, just relocked and run RUU

Not the other guy, but I think you're using the file incorrectly. Did you enter the command "fastboot oem rebootRUU" first?
Anyways you can try this method instead:
1-Rename the zip to 06PBIMG.zip
2-Place it on your sd card
3-Go into the bootlaoder and select hboot
It should detect the ruu automatically.
It's working and I am a dummy.
Thanks a lot!
I am currently on KK Revolution 9.1 and trying to upgrade the firmware to the new 4.28.502.1 so I can get LP and when I get into the ADB and try to flash it, it states "Remote: Not allowed" . The phone is s-off and unlocked. Do I need to relock it and unlock it again?? Ideas?? Starting to lose support for some of the items on KK.

AT&T devices are totally compatible with WWE/International firmware, and S-Off allows you to install that.
You are on AT&T, correct? Because 4.28.502.1 is from that carrier. If not, let me/us know and don't follow these instructions.
This is the easiest way, and you don't need a PC to do it.
Download this firmware.
Rename it to 0P6BIMG.zip (that's a zero, not the letter) using a file explorer and place it onto the root of your extSD (not in a folder).
Boot into bootloader by powering off your phone, then turning it on by holding down both the power button and vol down.
Select hboot if it doesn't automatically (vol buttons to navigate~power button to select) and follow the prompts (vol up to flash~power to reboot).
That should be it. Delete the renamed zip from your extSD, otherwise every time you boot to hboot it'll try to update again.
Then go back to bootloader and confirm that it says 4.16.401.10 next to OS.
Congratulations! You are now on Lollipop firmware and can flash the newest ROMs.

You don't need to relock with s-off. Something else is going on. Post your getvar data (be sure to delete IMEI and serial number as these are personal info).

Here is the bigger issue, for some reason, the phone can't get past the opening screen. The only way I have found to get past this is to power drain the phone. Once done, you can boot into recovery. Then, I can start again. Must be some sort of circuity blocking this.

As @redpoint73 said earlier, post your getvar. Hook up to your PC, get into ADB/fastboot and enter the command fastboot getvar all.
I was helping someone else with AT&T last night on the VenomROMs website, and mistakenly thought you were superCID when it was him. That won't be a problem though. It will abort with a CID mismatch.
The reason I suggested WWE firmware is that Marshmallow is coming out soon and WWE will get it way before AT&T updates.
If you want to stay on AT&T firmware, you could run the official RUU from HTC's US website.
Post your getvar, and we can go from there.

OK here should be the final solution, when you are in fastboot/hboot screen you must enter "fastboot oem rebootRUU" then once you see the black screen with HTC logo then you may flash the firmware, you can not flash firmwares on PC while fastboot is actively running, but of course run the firmware flash command TWICE! first flash it will fail because HBOOT gets updated by it self, then on second flash the rest of the firmware files get updated.
If you have S-OFF then you never have to lock your bootloader again.
I had a HTC M8 with HTC developers edition installed 4.12
I tried to flash install SuperSU and it rebooted.. now the phone is completely unresponsive
no HTC logo, can't turn it off, can't turn it on.
I'm really hoping someone can help me recover my phone?
By the way, I am basically a noob with Androids.
update
if i hold the power button down + volume up / down
it will reboot with HTC logo , powered by android.
it then goes to a blank screen.
delete
Have you done a backup previous to rooting it, and with SU version did you use?
If you've got a backup you could try holding Vol+ and power as long until the screen goes dark, then in this exact moment switch to holding Vol- and hold it until the bookcases comes up.
Now you can go to recovery and restore the backup. If you have accomplished that use a cmd and enter the fastboot getvar all command and post it here, without IMEI and Serial No. Maybe one can find a RUU to flash back to Stock.

hi guys, thanks for your replies.
I spent all day googling, trying to figure out how to fix it and haven't been successful yet. I'll tell you what I did.
If I tried to hold down the volume buttons and power buttons, it would restart the phone, the HTC logo would appear and then the screen would go blank, so
I installed ADB and Fastboot on my computer, and I was able to type
ADB reboot-bootloader and that brought up the Fastboot / HBoot menu
I then flashed TWRP to the phone, and tried to install a new version of the Developers Edition from HTC using their RUU (from their website) but it failed.
Last ditch effort, was trying to flash SkyDragon but there was not enough space on my phone so it failed with a 'Not enough Space' error.
I then read some instructions that mentioned deleting the cache, so I did this, but now, when I connect my phone to ADB, it always says OFFLINE and I can't connect to fastboot or ADB.
I am really hoping I haven't made it even worse.

Hi,
Unfortunately I didn't make any backups, mainly because I use auto-sync to the cloud.
I followed your instructions and got to the recovery menu
It says:
** Software status: Modified **
M8_UL PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-3.19.0.0000
Radio-1.25.214500021.0GG
OpenDSP-V48.2.2.000564-M8974_FO.1211
OS-4.16.401.10
emmc-boot 2048mb
Ok will check if there is a RUU to be found tomorrow morning and report back what to do after it.

When done, reboot but when TWRP offer to install root, don't install.. just reboot

Just forget it ... your post #1 made me believe that you have a Dev Edition but your other post show you have a EU device.
I already deleted my previous post, so ignore it .. won't work for you.
Just wait for the other guy's help
Or ... seeing you're not sure how to use a RUU based on your above post, I suggest that you restore a 4.16.401.10 stock non-rooted backup and its matching recovery (no need to relock bootloader) then do OTA to 4.16.401.13
You can get all the files and How-To in my thread linked in my signature
Then you can install any custom Dev ED Marshmallow ROM that available in Development section if you want to, no need to root as they are pre-rooted.
Or you can root the stock ROM with no problem with the root offer in TWRP.

So here we go. You can download the RUU here here. It's an executable for Windows PC. Start your M8 into bootloader, connect it to your PC and execute the file I posted in my link. This will help you to get back to a full stock International M8.

I booted my M8 into Bootloader and then ran the file, unfortunately, I get an error:
ERROR 155 Unknown Error
When I follow the on screen instructions from the RUU, which tells me to remove the USB, the Bootloader screen appears
on my phone and it says 'Security Fail'
RUU
Is this because I modified by phone after I bought it?
It's an EU phone from Romania, but I later went to the HTC site and unlocked it and installed the Developers edition onto it, at least I thought I did.
Have you relocked your bootloader prior to executing the file? Has to be done for a RUU to work on an M8. When in bootloader start a CMD on your PC and navigate to your adb folder. Then type "fastboot oem lock" and right away "fastboot reboot bootloader" to verify that it says relocked at the top. If so execute the RUU once more.
BTW don't remove it from USB while flashing until flash has been completed otherwise the flash is going to fail.

Only if the M8 ist recognized by adb and fully booted, as then you could reboot to recovery by "adb reboot recovery".
But as I understood you are now on stock again by RUU aren't you!?
It's a risk to try to flash Custom Recovery and ROM, without been able to boot to bootloader by using hardware buttons, as if you get stuck again there won't be an easy way out of it.

He can't be stock by RUU because a RUU is not flashed via TWRP. And he never mentioned to try to flash a custom recovery, he's already on TWRP. And an issue with the volume rocker is always a problem, on a perfectly stock device or a custom modded one.....issue stays the same

my problem now is..is there any way i can flash a rom on it or something just to take it past the boot loop
I wanted to make a small guide how to return your HTC one m9 to stock with RUU exe installer. The steps are pretty simple so please follow them. Please note that this is only for WWE international models. Same procedure can be done for other regions, however, the files are different. Doing this, you will also get a latest Marshmallow and 3.35.401.12 update! This will save you of hassle to copy and flash your phone several times over to get it done, this procedure does all that. You will not even need to open a command prompt.
Before you do this procedure backup yours files somewhere safe. This will wipe everything you have on the phone to stock settings. This will also unroot your device and remove custom recovery if you had any.
Follow this guide step by step. Do not open / run anything if I haven't said so.
1. For sake of being organized make a new folder on your desktop called "RUU" and make sure your phone has more than 30% battery otherwise RUU procedure wont work.
2. Download HTC sync manager from here and install it (this can help if RUU installer starts derping with USB connections etc : http://www.htc.com/us/support/software/htc-sync-manager.aspx
3. Download the RUU exe from here and put it in the RUU folder you created on the desktop: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23991606952597788
4. Download the rom.zip file from here and put it in the RUU folder on your desktop. File name needs to be rom.zip
5. Navigate to TEMP folder by typing %temp% in the search bar. If you can't find the temp folder this way then simply navigate to: C:\Users\PCname\AppData\Local\Temp
6. Select all folders you see there and delete them. If you get a file in use or skip message then please do so.
7. Go back to the RUU folder we created earlier and run the RUU exe file from step 3 as an admin. Give it a little time to load and once you are here don't press on next.
8. Copy rom.zip file from RUU folder and navigate to %temp% folder. Paste rom.zip file here: http://prntscr.com/a5gwae
9. Once copying is finished go back to the RUU exe window from step 7 and start clicking next until it prompts you to update. Click on update to 3.35.401.12.
10. During this procedure the phone will go on and off for a few times and after several minutes it will give the message that procedure has been finished successfully.
- Please note that all files are official. Hope this little guide helped you.
TnQ so much man. I was searching for this RUU for a while but couldn't find it. I'm gonna test it tomorrow. BTW i have an unlocked bootloader and s-on, do i need to relock bootloader before installing RUU?
No, you don't have to.
Or just rename the rom.zip to 0PJAIMG.zip copy to the sd card root, after that power off the phone hold vol- and power select download mode and follow the instructions on the screen.
BTW thx for the rom
why is this not stickied?

Downgrades are not possible as long as you are S-ON. You need S-OFF to do this.
Send by the swarm intelligence of my coffee machine ?.
Ok so I could flash the same firmware via this method so long as the ruu matches? Unless of course I could s-off then s-on before sending the phone back in.

Please don't post more or less the same question in several threads. It's considered as rude behaviour on xda.
An xda search for "demo" would have been enough for finding this thread. If you read the whole thread you'll learn everything about the problems that arise with the latest firmware and the Demo-CID HTC__002.

Recently installed Viper10 5.11.0 ROM. Trying to return to stock but cannot. I have tried running several HTC RUU exe files (including RUU_PERFUME_WL_N70_SENSE80GP_MR_NA_Gen_Unlock_2.41.617.3 RUU_PERFUME_WL_N70_SENSE80GP_VZW_MR_NA_Gen_Unlock_2.51.617.32

Nothing works. The RUU files start InstallShield Wizard but when it gets end of the progress bar, the wizard stops and nothing else happens. I've Run As Admin and disabled AV/Firewall. Nothing.
I've tried to install zip versions of same RUU files, both using Fastboot and moving to internal/card storage of the phone. No ZIP file will return unit to stock.
Using the RUU should be the best option but the RUU file always fails when the Wizard's progress bar gets to the end. Why does the RUU fail every time?
Refer to this thread to change your CID to verizon.

What does it say next to CID, MID, and OS in bootloader mode?
You are S-Off, so instead of running an RUU, you can flash a no-wipe firmware package (an RUU will wipe your phone). With that information I can link you to a no-wipe firmware, with instructions to flash it.
Thanks, but I don't want to change CID to Verizon. It's a GSM phone, not CDMA. It's unlocked (617). But I do understand the confusion. The HTC Dev site downloads an RUU that is seemingly for Verizon even though it's listed under the Unlocked Phone section.
Thanks. Bootload mode shows CID as BS_US001, MID as 2PS650000 and OS as 2.51.617.32. I have tried to flash (using both TWRP and Fastboot) a no-wipe firmware (namely PMEWL_2.51.617.32_NoWipe_TWRP3110) but it hasn't returned me to stock. Nothing takes and the only thing I can do to revive the phone is reflash (using TWRP) the Viper10 rom. I can live with the Viper10 rom but I'd like to return to stock so I can get HTC OTA, etc. I figure the most likely way to accomplish this is to use the HTC Dev RUU but, as mentioned, it never gets past the InstallShield Wizard.
Interesting that the Bootloader shows a different OS version than checking through the phone's software. In any event, I am definitely running Viper10 and it uses an older Build as its base.

Software in setting> about is your ROM base, OS in download mode is your firmware version.
Do you have HTC Sync installed on your PC? Try uninstalling it and running the RUU again. You could also try running it while your phone is booted to download mode.
Yup, I've installed fresh drivers via HTC Sync and the PC recognizes the phone no problem.
ADB and fastboot also see the phone. I've tried the RUU in download mode,
bootloader and even OEM rebootRUU. Nada. In all cases the RUU InstallShield Wizard starts and then stops when it reaches the end of the progress bar. It never even gets to the actual RUU install routine (which I've used in the past with my HTC M9, so I know how it works when it flashes correctly). I'm running out of ideas. I'm happy with Viper10, if I can't get back to stock.
Try this https://www.reddit.com/r/htc/comments/2vxite/ruu_exe_file_doesnt_load_closes/colxuoy/
I've had the same problem while running on win 10 ltsb 2016 and this seemed to fix the problem.

If your OS says 2.51.617.32, then you are on the latest firmware now. Seems like the no-wipe firmware worked after all. The firmware won't return you to stock.
If you want to go back to stock and not just update your firmware, you could try flashing a 2.51.617.32 RUU.zip via your extSD instead of running the RUU.exe.
I can upload the RUU.zip if you need it.
Thanks again for the help. I have the following RUU downloaded from the HTC Dev site: RUU_PERFUME_WL_N70_SENSE80GP_VZW_MR_NA_Gen_Unlock_2.51.617.32
I also found what I believe is the ZIP version of that RUU: 2PS6IMG_PERFUME_WL_N70_SENSE80GP_VZW_MR_NA_Gen_Unlock_2.51.617.32
I've tried both running the RUU.exe and flashing the ZIP from my externalSD. No luck with either. Viper10 stays stubbornly stuck as my ROM. If you have a better ZIP, I'd be happy to try that too.
Thanks. I saw this suggestion as well in my hunt for a solution.
I've reloaded every.... possible... redistributable... with no success.
At least my C++ Visual Studio redistributables are up to date.
I can't even get the the license acceptance screen on the RUU install wizard.
I crash out before then.
Thanks. I found the same suggestion in my hunt for a solution.
I've updated every single redistributable... with no success. At least my PC is up-to-date with C++ Visual Studio. :-/

First of all, you should use the reply/quote button when responding to a comment. It makes it easier to tell who you are replying to, and who you are replying to will get a notification about it.
Okay, delete any RUU.zips you already have on your ext SD
Download this
Rename it by deleting everything in the name of the .zip except for 2PS6IMG (and .zip of course) and place it onto your ext SD card
Boot to download mode and your phone will recognize the .zip and prompt you to press volume up to confirm the flash. Do that
When the flash is complete your phone will ask you to press power to reboot. Do that
After the RUU has flashed, either delete the .zip or rename it again to something else (add _2.51.617.32 to the name so you know what it is). If you don't do that, every time you boot to download mode your phone will try to update again.
Good luck!

Tada! That worked. I was able to flash the ZIP you sent and restored to stock 2.51.617.32. I still have no idea why the RUU exe file won't work but as usual there is more than one way to skin a cat -- or in this case, flash an HTC 10. Also not sure why prior attempts to flash a ZIP from the external SD didn't work.
Thanks for all your help (and patience).

You are welcome
I'm not sure what was going on with the .exe not working, but I knew this would.
I'm glad that I could help.

That is the RUU I linked.
You could get the RUU.exe that you can run from your PC from HTC's official US website here.
But if you want to flash from SD that's the one. It works with S-On as well.

No. You can run the .exe on your PC, or flash the .zip in fastboot with
fastboot flash zip 2PS6IMG.zip after renaming it to 2PS6IMG.zip
