**SOLVED** Any/All ODIN flashes FAIL! - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

SOLVED: see post #5 & #8
I've been trying to root my T807T and everyone with one on the forums here has reported that all T805 stuff works just fine on it.
I have installed USB drivers, USB Debugging set to on. Been using Odin 3.07 as well as 3.09.
I tried multiple USB ports and two computers and a whole lot of different wires (including original ones).
I disabled my Anti-virus and do not have Kies installed.
I am not a newbie to flashing and have been rooting Samsungs since the first Galaxy S Vibrant all those years ago. I have never seen anything like this.
Everything I try to flash in Odin comes up with FAIL! after about halfway through flashing. I can restart my tablet and everything works fine, but this is making it impossible to root.
FAIL occurs right after "NAND Write"
Any/all help is very much appreciated. If anyone is NYC local and can give it a shot, that'd be great.
Thanks everyone.

I would suggest taking a look at this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=54393309
Install kies and reinstall drivers with kies probably would help?

I would uninstall the drivers and try to install the drivers from kies. Other than that, Im not sure why it wouldnt work.

I have been digging a lot on the issue. Of course I haven't been able to find a whole lot other then it appears 95 percent of these nand write issues are with samsung devices. Make sure that in settings>general>security reactivation lock is OFF. Also try removing your SIM card and the SD card if you have one. Then proceed to flash. We have the exact same model, firmware, build, etc etc. I can't think of a logical reason why it won't work. I'd be inclined to believe it's a communication issue between tablet and computer at this point. Completely stumped on this one however I will keep digging for you.

Does your tar have .md5 at the end of the filename? I think it should fail earlier if this is the problem but maybe its not being properly verified? Its just a shot in the dark but try removing the .md5 if its there and just flash the straight .tar file. Or retry download maybe you got a corrupt copy.

cfautoroot: BAM! worked first try.

Thank you very much for this genius tidbit. I must've enabled it the first day I got the tablet and forgot all about it as It's never been an option on any of my other devices.
Huge thanks to both of you guys for bending over backwards trying to find a solution as to why the flashing wasn't working. Now we know.
Pretty clever of Samsung to hide an Odin flash lockout switch within the actual OS (as opposed to recovery).

I think i bricked my epic.

I was angry at my current rom which was on MTD so i decided just to you the old samsung "phone flash utility" (Epic4G_FroyoUpgrade_EB13.exe) that was uploaded on their site like a year ago to go back to stock. well i think since the phone was MTD it didnt work and now its stock at the connect cable screen, is there anything i can do?
I am running CleanGB MTD. The first time I tried to install it I had a bad download & needed to redo it from scratch. I used the Samsung EB13 Windows Installer utility to restore my phone back to stock & had no problems at all. It was up & running on MTD just had a few errors that I did not have time to fix that morning & I ran it for a few days after restoring with the utility, rooting, & restoring my backup. But now I'm enjoying the MTD goodness.....
Can you get back into download mode?
If so I would get a different USB cable & try running the installer again.

from what ive been reading on the threads, i believe you can just odin back, and back sure you have reboot and re-partition checked marked.
I found out what the problem was. I should have known this because this happened to me once before. I was using my front USB ports. Front ports on most pc's are only 1.0 and you need to use the back 2.0 ones to work. Most people think its cable issues but its usually just USB port. This samsung utility is a complete gem! screw odin. thanks for the response!!!

thanks guys. Yeah ive been using that sammy file since ec05 came out. this is the 3rd brick maybe 4th it got me out of. it works for EVERYTHING. better than odin.
Wow, I didn't know this exe thing existed. Odin has NOT been working on my home PC for tje past few weeks(months?) and that has kept me from trying anything that would require Odin to recover from, i.e. mtd.
Glad I read here in the Q&A pretty regularly. Most of the time I'm seeing if there's anyone I can help, but times like this I end up learning new things.

I am at work so I cannot post the file I have, but I put the file name in & searched in Google & several download options popped up.
Google Search: Epic4G_FroyoUpgrade_EB13.exe
Check it out & let me know if you need me to post a copy of the file, I saw several already on services like multiupload in the search.
Look at the thread stickied in development. The Samsung tool won't work all the time.

So my friend gave me his phone to see if I could fix it. It loops in CWM and won't get out of it and I can't connect with odin to it. (My phone connects just fine.) This is the only other thing I can think of. Anyone else got other ideas?
---------- Post added at 01:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:08 PM ----------
Well tried it and phone still not discovered by the PC. I am at a loss at what to do. I know my friend tried to install some type of rom to it and didn't make a backup. It boots in to CWM non-stop and I can flash zips but it never leaves that loop even after the flashes. I can boot into Download mode but the phone won't be recognized. Tried both Odin and this. The phone is getting charged through the cable though which confuses me even more. Any help?!

Use a different cable with odin... it may be charging it but its not getting a data connection... also put into download mode and plug in usb... then "jiggle" the cord until it recognizes it...

Uninstall and reinstall the drivers. Then also try Odin with the battery and phone plugged in. Make sure you use a better cable than stock.

[Q] Semi(Soft)-Bricked Unflashable Epic - What to do now?

*First of all, let me say that this is a repost from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153310&page=27), and I apologize for that fact. I have been severely neglecting food and sleep trying to fix my phone, and I really, really didn't feel like typing the whole damned story up again. Any assistance or insight would be deeply appreciated...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, I did it this time I think. I've hacked, modded, wiped, and flashed my phone since I got it last year, and although I've gotten to places where I thought I had totally fuxored things up beyond recovery, every single time in the past I've been able to bring it back from the brink of oblivion. I am exceedingly resourceful and tenacious, which can be both a good and bad thing. Good thing when I am able to fix things that seem unfixable. Bad when I forget about things like eating or sleeping.
Here's the present situation: 4 days ago I was trying to flash a new modem (FB15)(something I know well how to do as I've done it many, many times before) through Odin, when it stalled out near the beginning of the process. This is not unusual with Odin, so I've gotten into the habit of closing it, pulling the battery, and starting again. This time, however, no matter what I've tried, I cannot get Odin to successfully flash. It fails every single time. Either that or it stalls yet again.
At the moment I can only get into 2 modes on my phone: download mode (which can't actually download anything apparently) and the very unpleasant computer--!--phone screen when I try to boot it up or go into recovery. This is the longest my phone has been unusable. I've been intensely focused on fixing it since it was semi-bricked. The ridiculously frustrating and annoying thing is that the computer I'm using (and I've used multiple to try to fix this across Windows, Linux, and Mac) usually says "USB device not recognized" when I plug my phone in while in download mode, no matter the state of the drivers, and when it does recognize it and it is visible in Odin, it means nothing because Odin fails no matter what file I'm trying to flash. When the computer and Odin DO recognize the phone, and when Odin doesn't hang, very occasionally it will give me some odd error message like "PIT mapping not found" or "cannot open COM port". I've tried so many of the things I've tried in the past that have worked: changing USB ports, rebooting the computer between attempts, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, going into download mode with the SD-card and battery out and in, loading Odin after or before putting the phone into download mode, trying on different computers with different versions of Windows (I even tried one Mac with iOS 10.4 and a Linux notebook with Ubuntu), trying different USB cables, flashing with the battery and SD card out, trying to flash different files (besides the original modem.bin which stalled), running Odin as administrator, yadda, yadda, yadda...on and on, for days. I even just went out and bought a high-performance, super-short USB cable (6-inches) and a USB 3.0 PCI card so I'd have dedicated USB. Nada.
Basically my phone seems to have a broken download mode with potentially wonky USB (Samsung USB has never been good). I've been seeing if I can get Heimdall to work, though there is a bit of a learning curve with that program, no matter how easy people say it is. I've never even tried flashing it with it yet since I haven't gotten together all of the apparently necessary files. I also just found One-Click Unbrick, and while I was excited originally, it seems that the same outcome is the result. No matter what I do to get everything just right to be able to succeed, it fails. Java is installed, Heimdall is apparently installed, and the One-Click Unbrick drivers have been installed every time I've tried to run it. Nada again.
If my phone is able to get into download mode, yet that seems to be borked, what is my recourse? I'm at the end of my rope...*sinks into a depressed lump on the floor*.
ANY assistance would be immensely appreciated. Thank you all in advance. I'm not incredibly hopeful at this point, but I am (fortunately or unfortunately) still tenacious as hell. :-/

I thank you much for your suggestion. I've tried flashing the EC05 modem tar and both the tar.md5 and the straight tar file of the stock EL ROM, though surprisingly I haven't tried the straight EL30 modem tar yet. I'll try when I get home. The main problem is not getting Odin to COM, but getting it to flash anything. It either stalls, fails, or doesn't see the phone...download mode seems to be basically useless.

It is possible you have some crap in your phone's port. Or even the new cable is flaky. Get a bright light and magnifying glass and look in your phone's port. Also try fresh downloads of the files.

I'l check the USB/charging port when I get home from work. Most of the files I've used, including the various versions of Odin, came from my synched Dropbox folder. I'm wondering now if Dropbox synches files accurately. I'll try redownloading every file I use to flash to see if it has a beneficial effect. Thanks for the suggestion.
hope this helps

Let me find you some reliable files
Odin 1.85
Stock El30
Windows 32 bit and 64bit drivers
This should be enough to get you on your way. Oh and if you can at all possible reinstall windows prior to loading these drivers. i know someone who had to do it before their computer would recognize their phone. I've been in this kind of situation i had someone root my phone and is computer was fubar'd and it took him 3 days to unbrick my phone. This is what helped him he kept recieving unknown device. This is what helped is what helped him id advice the same. Once you have windows reinstalled download the three things and install the drivers and give it a shot.

well you can do it over a virtual machine but unsure how to do this and if this will work entirely it might it might not im not too fluent with virtual machines.. but it simulates a working computer so id imagine you can install drivers and see if it will then recognize your phone.

So interesting that you mention running a virtual machine, as since I can't reinstall Windows Vista on this system, I was considering partitioning the hard drive and installing a version of Linux, then running WINE under that.
Lol try that... or windows i think windows might be your best bet...

I FIXED IT! My phone which has been dead for 5 days lives again! Resurrected!
I thank you all for your time and assistance. It was very deeply appreciated.
I fixed it by circumventing Winblows entirely. I created a second partition on my friend's hard drive, installed Ubuntu Linux 11.10, then went through the pretty simple process of setting up Android SDK/ADB and Heimdall, and all of the dependencies that they required. The ridiculous thing is that I fixed it without even trying. I was simply seeing if Heimdall could detect my phone (which I had connected and in DL mode), which I noticed that it did. I had no idea what Download PIT did, so I pressed it, and lo and behold, it did something amazing, and rebooted my phone. I am elated, exhausted, triumphant!
WHOOT!!!
I kNEW I would figure it out. I always do...lol.
In messing up my phone so many times, I have gotten VERY good at fixing whatever nonsense happens to arise.
Thanks again all.

EDIT: I meant PRINT PIT, not Download PIT. ;-)

First, I believe this is the correct section - the phone I am working with is a T-Mobile Galaxy S II... Second, I can't Odin because I don't have a working usb connection. I've tried several different ROMS from this fine section and I get the same result... Boot Loop
If you flashed TWRP 2.6.3, that's your problem.
Flash 2.6.1
This is the wrong section because it has nothing to do with ROM development.
With that being said if you can still boot into twrp you still have hope. Try loading a different ROM into an SD card using a converter and slide back in the phone to properly wipe first then re flash.
I don't understand why you can't get a proper USB connection going but above suggestion may solve it.

Just to confirm a few things: where do you not have the working USB connection? in download mode? If so, I'd try reinstalling the drivers.
Also, I see in your sig that you state your phones are:
Asus Nexus 7
Sprint Galaxy Note 2
Neither of which is a SGH-T989. Are you sure you are flashing the correct ROM/Kernel for your device?
also you said it came rooted but you re-rooted it. What process did you use to re-root it?
One last thing: you say you got it second hand, are you sure it is a T-Mobile galaxy S 2? May want to check under the battery for a "T989" or "i9100". The i9100 is NOT a T-Mobile galaxy S 2. It should be SGH-T989 if they didn't give you incorect info about the phone.
You could also try a different USB cable or hub. I've had USB extension cables give me grief and the front ports on my PC don't like my phone.

It is a genuine SGH-T989 I checked under the battery.

Everything I've found requires a computer connection. I need to be able to flash it back from v2.6.3.1 using TWRP to do it. Is that possible?

You could always get a SD card reader, connect t to ur PC, DL a flashable twrp 2.6.1.0 and flash the recovery, then flash a ROM an u should be back in action, but above mentioned is right this is the wrong forum u need q&a

One more piece of information that might be helpful... When I try to wipe the cache I get this message "Formatting Data using make_ext4fs function" and it stays stuck there. I've left it for over 30 minutes and it doesn't ever move from that screen. Hope that helps... I really need some help here.

If u go to the dev section on this phone and look around a bit, u will find the twrp thread, in that thread is a flashabke copy of 2.6.1.0, if u can't find it pm me, I have a copy, all u would need to do is put the zip file on any micro SD card then put it in the phone and flash it with the twrp u have now, it will revert it back to 2.6.1.0 and that should fix ur prob, but like I said of u can't find it pm me and I'll shoot u a copy

Let it sit on the TeamWin screen for a minute or so... I find it sometimes takes a little bit.
If it doesn't ever get past there, try hooking it up to a PC and see if you can get ADB to load (presuming you have ADB installed and ADB drivers installed). If you can, try to do an "adb pull /proc/last_kmsg" and a "adb logcat > logcat.txt" and zip those up and toss them on here.
If you CAN'T get into adb, I would try hooking the phone up to Kies and see if it will do anything for you.
Or you could try following this guide as you have the T-Mobile SGH-T989 (not the Telus SGH-T989D):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513359
BUT make sure to grab the correct stock image file for whatever version your android currently is (ie if you are on Android 2.3.6, then make sure to get the T-mobile KL1 2.3.6 stock image).
Also, what ROM did you flash? was it a 4.3 ROM? If so, did you update your radio before you flashed the ROM? I think 4.1+ needs the updated radio to function properly.
I know you said you can't connect through ODIN, but I'm hoping it is because of some odd driver or odd ODIN version. That thread has the stuff to make it all work I believe.
I'm really hoping you can get ADB to work. If you can pull a logcat of your bootup process, it will be much easier to figure out what went wrong.

You guys are great!!! I really appreciate all the help. No matter what I do, ADB, Kies, different cables, different computers, nothing gets past the "USB Device Not Recognized" pop up. I let it sit for 15 minutes, twice. Still no love... I loaded TWRP_2.6.1.0_Hercules and then reboot and that's when it got stuck. Prior to that I had loaded TMobileT989UVMC6RootedDeodexed Rom. I forget where I got it. I'm pretty sure it was a 4.1.2 based rom.

weird... I am not sure why it is being so fussy with your phone.
Hopefully somebody has a better suggestion than I do, but my next thought is to try ebay-ing the phone in hopes that somebody gives you a few bucks for it. It sounds to me like the internal memory module is dying and the USB port is shot.
Is your water damage sticker pink/red or missing? It should be under the battery.
I hate thinking that the phone is just dead, but without being able to connect it to the PC in either recovery or download mode and not being able to boot into a ROM or recovery, I think the next step is to scrap it and hope somebody can send you a few bucks... or if you have experience soldering, maybe try replacing the USB connector?
I could be wrong mind you... The only time I had issues like that it was due to a badly flashed recovery and I needed to use ODIN to get back up and running. As a thought, do you have a Windows XP 32-bit computer you could try plugging the phone into? And while the phone is plugged in, can you check device manager for all devices? maybe try installing the drivers manually? I suggest windows XP 32bit because that is what I use the majority of the time with my phone. I've also used Windows 7 64-bit and it worked.

Thanks again for your time and suggestions... I've always been very impressed with the xda community. I actually got this phone, used, from Swappa. And I am in the process of returning it for a refund. But the seller is being difficult and is trying to stick me with the phone. I was just trying to salvage it on my own, just in case... Thanks again.

that sucks. I've heard good things about Swappa, but living in Canada I can't use it. My opinion it sounds like you got a dud and based on how hard the guy is fighting to not give you a refund, I wouldn't be surprised if he knew it was doa and just fluked out and get it running before he sold it. Or maybe it got water damaged and he knew it would fail soon so he sold it before it completely quit.
I hope you get it all sorted out.
Good luck and sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

[Q] Root the unrooted Note 2 N7100

Hi,
I have rooted by Note 2 N7100 in the past using the ODIN tool and CWM. But I had issues with some apps that were being closed at random etc. So I got tired and unrooted. But now I wanted to root it again using the ODIN. But ODIN is not able to detect my phone at all.
Please someone help me. Now that my note 2 got the 4.3, it is bloated with all kinds of crap from Samsung. I need to root to remove all the crap.
Thanks n Regards,

i did google this issue and people have come up with various possibilities what could be wrong right from faulty usb cable to re installing drivers to factory resetting their device 3x for ODIN to be able to detect their device, i am a newbie too at these things so i am not really sure what could possibly be stopping from ODIN detecting your phone but i'll be on the look out and see if i can refer to you a solution if you haven't solved it already but if you do fix it somehow please post what exactly you did to make it work so it could help future users in case they run into the same issue.

It can't be the issue with the cable as I am able to use the cable for other things like backups and moving data from phone to PC etc. The issue with the Factory reset is that i dont have a spare phone at the moment. So if this device screws i am dead without a mobile to use.
Let me search some more and if I can find a solution i will post it here. Else I am going for the Cyanogenmod installer. I am tired of this.

Unbricked Galaxy S3 but now cannot flash stock firmware

Hey guys, I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 for Tmobile SGH T999 and I had cyanogen on it until it crapped out and got hard bricked. AFter following these links, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1949687 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2439367, I was able to unbrick my phone and get into boot recovery mode. However, when i try to flash the stock firmware in odin, I get an error (the error is shown in the attachment). Can anyone please help me? Sorry if im posting something wrong, I am new to this forum. Thank you!
After booting into download mode, take out the sdcard before flashing with Odin. Also if kies is on the computer, uninstall it.

I tried this still doesnt work.
You said there was an error msg, but im not seeing it in the screenshot.
How exactly did you brick it though? Have you tried flashing MJC or NC2 firmware from Odin?
If you are still running MD5 or earlier, you could try flashing TWRP, then boot recovery and flash the recovery firmware package in the development section.

Sorry i meant failure not error. I bricked it because my cyanogenmod was having problems and i tried to restore it, after i did it completely bricked. Sorry can you please elaborate what is TWRP, MJC or NC2 firmware, im dont have much knowledge about these kind of things. Thank you so much for helping me, it means alot to me and I will do my best to follow your directions.
Ok, ill explain better when I get to my computer. It'll be too much to try to type on this tiny device im using right now!
But for now, TWRP is a custom recovery, like CWM. You use it when flashing roms like CM.
MJC and NC2 are just the different firmware builds you can flash in Odin. We shorthand it by just using the last 3 letters of the build version. T999UVUENC2 is what im referring to when I say NC2.
Take a look at my firmware thread. Its stickied at the top of development. Linked in my sig too.
Let me know if this helps your understanding at all. Ill explain more in what to do shortly.
Thanks for that, it gave me a better understanding. I tried to install flash and this happens when i try to flash twrp or MJC on odin
Ahhh! PIT=Partition Information Table
Odin uses this to know the partition layout of the device so it knows where to flash each part of the firmware. It usually gets this directly from the device, but occasionally it becomes corrupted or lost.
There is a thread in the General section that has all our PIT files. Should be on the first page right now, maybe second. Download the correct one for your device. (My last post has a link to my repo with all PIT files)
Now try flashing your firmware again, do everything the same way, but this time check the repartition checkbox, and click the PIT button and select the .pit file you just downloaded. Now click start and it should work. We hope....!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1848267 are you talking about this page for the PIT file? because when i clicked this link it doesnt work and it pops up as an unsafe page on my myWOT.
Ok so i found a PIT file for my phone and when i tried to flash with the odin v3.07 it got stuck on Leave CS. I looked up a solution for this and it was to use an older version of odin, v1.85. After i tried this I made more progress but it failed again.

Yes that's the thread. Which did it say was unsafe? The thread itself, or my link in the post in that thread?
If its my link, it just goes to my folder on http://androidfilehost.com. its a file sharing site solely for android stuff from sites like xda. Its perfectly safe. If that's the one being flagged its probably because it has files you can download m

Where did you get the pit? May be that its either a corrupt download or for the wrong device.
And did you try with Odin 3.09?

It was invisibleK's link that was unsafe. I used your 16GB Pit file in here, http://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=6471 and i got the same result. I dont remember where i got the other pit. I got stuck on Leave CS on the odin 3.09 and when i click start it failed again with the repartition failed.
You are still removing the sdcard before flashing, right?
I have no idea if this could help, but theres a program here on xda called PIT magic. Maybe take a look in that thread to see if you find anything useful.
You can try flashing the PIT only, no firmware selected, but I dont know if this would work or not.
Only other thing I can think of is to try everything over again with the NC2 firmware.
Try that first, but you can also try flashing cwm or TWRP with odin. If we can get recovery on there we might be able to try other stuff with that.

sorry i didnt respond in a while, I was really busy with homework. I tried what you said and still no sign of success. I brought my phone to a repair shop and they said the motherboard is damaged and it needs to be replaced for 150$. I hope this guy is just bull****ting me, can anyone confirm? I really hope there is still light at the end of the tunnel right now.
Its hard to say. Motherboards do go bad, usually an issue with the memory. Its pretty rare, but it does happen, and the frequency has been increasing since these devices are starting to get a little old now.
But $150 for a replacement is, imo, a rip off. You can find used boards on ebay for under $100. If you csn use a screwdriver and can be gentle with the ribbon cables, its a super easy swap. Just check the videos to see.

do you recommend me doing it? or are there more alternatives.
If the memory itself has gone bad, that's your best option. It is possible to change just the memory chip, but the part is probably hard to find and it requires a higher level of soldering skills.
There's a video of this, if I can find it again ill post the link.
Here's the video to the emmc replacement for international S3, should be similar but will require BGA soldering skills. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOYo9AcUQQI
I thought about attempting to do this for my T999v, but a EMMC chip is about 35-50 bucks.

did you have my symptoms? did you ever fix your phone? if so please share, i want to get my phone back in the cheapest way possible.
PS. I charged my phone today and the red led light showed up, that means my motherboard isnt broken right?
Not necessarily. It means there is a problem and requires special drivers and programs to fix, (or the debrick sd card). It basically just means the computer sees something is plugged in. If the memory has gone bad it could very well still give the red led and/or boot from the sd.
The only good way to verify the board (or memory) needs replacing would be to go to a second shop and ask them to attempt a jtag repair. If they tell you the same thing as the first shop, ask if they can be more specific about what happened when they attempted the jtag repair. At this point though, its a pretty good guess that the memory has gone bad.
