fastboot cable question. - Kindle Fire 2 Q&A, Help and Troubleshooting

Hi, everywhere I look it says you need a fastboot/factory cable to install the second bootloader, so you can install custom recovery and flash rooted/ custom roms.
My question is why am I reading posts from people saying they need to make a fastboot cable to unbrick there kindle fire2?
If you need a fastboot cable to mod, how have these people bricked there kf2 in the first place? Have I missed something?
I have done my research and I know how to make the fastboot cable and even have a Samsung cable just laying around winking at me so its just a matter of time before I take a sharp knife and soldering iron to it but just wanted to find out how people have come to brick a kf2 without the cable if its essential to do anything.
Thanks, Steve.

Was uncomfortable about that cable winking at me so I skinned it alive lol.
would love an answer to my question In post 1 if anyone can help.

[Q] Can't flash Boot...can't ODIN...???

So, I formatted all the partitions on the phone when I was trying to flash ICS. Anyway, long story short, when I try to flash anything that flashes the boot image, I get nowhere (error). I tried to restore various image backups, and none can restore the boot image. Lastly, I've tried to odin, and now no computer will recognize the phone be it USB, fastboot or adb (various USB cables).
Any suggestions? Phone isn't a daily driver, so no big deal if I can't fix it.
Try Heimdall. It uses it's own drivers. Look at post 2 of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
And of course a good cable like HTC, Blackberry or Palm.
No luck there, either. The computer can't find a "download-mode device," which is telling me the actual micro USB on the phone is effed...
Sounds like it. Still could be the cable or dirt in the micro usb connector.

I know Adam over in the Unbrickable Mod post is looking for bricked phones. He also said he is willing to do it for people just for testing if they arent good with a soldering iron. It is legit and would go to a good cause, along with reviving your epic so you could use it again. I would do it if i was bricked
heres the thread if you wanna take a look.....and maybe post your situation. Im sure someone in there would love to help bring you epic back with the mod

Did you happen to READ THE LINKS GIVEN TO YOU?
not sorry for caps
Your battery is near dead. You probably won't get anything to connect at this point without a factory cable. Which you would have known by READING THE LINKS GIVEN TO YOU.
I couldn't even charge mine
Okay, (even though I know this has been covered in the link I gave you) I'll be nice considering the possibility of a language barrier.
You need to get a factory programming cable (which I've said) so you can get into fastboot. Read about the factory cable and it's purpose here:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-labs/146492-how-why-make-your-own-motorola-factory-cable.html
...and here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20317299
Then learn how to fix your drivers in case that's also contributing to the problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23747671
Pay attention. The fix for this requires installing a new bootloader which (if you aren't careful) can PERMANENTLY brick your device.
Thanks for the links, btw.
I'm 13 and I don't know about making a factory cable, the steps on the links
is quite complicated. And Maybe risky.
Your only option then, would be to get a fastboot connection to flash the new FFF 1.4
This you may need to do several times to get it to work, if it works at all.
Make sure you know how to use fastboot
With the Kindle turned off, enter the following command:
Code:
fastboot flash bootloader /path/to/FFF1.4.bin
When you see "waiting for device" turn your kindle on.
If the installation takes place, all you need to do at that point is plug it into the wall charger.
If after several tries it still doesn't work you may want to try fixing your fastboot drivers. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23747671
Otherwise, a factory cable is your only option.
oh crap.
I think it's really dead.
It doesn't work, my computer won't detect it and it won't even show up
on device manager when I turn it on.
sorry man

[Q] factory cable & u-boot

Hi,
before trying the hard way and temporarily bricking my KF, does anybody know wether the factory cable enters fast boot mode via hardware or does it simply trigger a special boot mode in u-boot?
Why I'm asking: in case I do something wrong by flashing a new, but not working u-boot, can I still use a factory cable to get to fastboot mode safely?
My guess is that fastboot mode needs a working u-boot at least, but I seek confirmation by some other experts
Best,
stylon

u-boot looks for the factory cable. You need a working bootloader for fastboot mode. If you break the bootloader, you'll need to open up the back cover, short a pad and force the hardware to go into USB boot mode.
Thanks a lot kinfauns,
I read your Kindle Fire For Beginners guide, but must have missed that piece.

Kindle Fire 2nd gen - red triangle; cannot boot

Hello everyone...
I've been reading all the threads on this forum for a few months, but I couldn't find an concrete and final answer to this problem:
I have a Kindle Fire 7'' 2nd Generation, and after rooting and installing ICS ( with KF First Aide) i noticed that my wallpaper was flashing and the notification bar was disappearing. I tried to fix it but suddenly the RED TRIANGLE ( with exclamation point inside) appeared and looks like this:
( the triangle)
"Your Kindle device cannot boot.
You can reset your device to Factory defaults to fix this issue (all data will be deleted from the device).
<Menu options>
To reboot your device press and hold the power button for 4 seconds and release.
To reset to Factory Defaults, press the power button 5 times in succession"
None of those options work, and when I connect the USB cable to my PC nothing happens.
Is there someone who knows how can I fix it, but please... explain from the scratch because I am a total beginner. ( I rooted it only by following instructions for noobs, step by step)
I would be very thankful.
BTW I don't have a Factory Cable and if I have to buy one it would take about 40 days, and if it is possible to make one- I also don't know how.
You will need a fastboot/factory cable, here's a life o on how to make one, there's one on this forum as well but I knew where this was listed in the FAQs thread here so I used it. http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-labs/146492-how-why-make-your-own-motorola-factory-cable.html

Why would buying a cable take 40 days? I bought one off ebay for £3 and had it within 2 days. It was easier than making my own, and i have a soldering iron.

Only one sent from China could possibly take that long. Not sure what you're getting at...

Buying one should be quick and easy. You only have to look in the forum to see lots of posts of people struggling with the KF2, and how often a Factory Cable is required.
It should be a recommendation that you get the cable before doing anything.

Actually the tutorials for 2nd bootloader/TWRP for Kindle's of all kinds do suggest that you grt a fastboot cord. Show me one that does not. It falls on the person doing the modding to go ahead and read and maybe do a little bit of research first don't you think?
Edit: The problem is some tutorials failed to update when the firmware was patched creating many bootloops if the firmware was not downgraded to 7.2.3 or 7.3.0 first. Still warnings always exhisted to backup and get a fastboot cord.
How to root

Hey, thanks for the advice
I recovered ( unbricked) my Kinde 2gen and it's working now.. but how can I root it now and instal ICS or JB on it?
I did it once on the same device using KF First Aide ( the one with 45 options) but now it cannot gain root access... why?
So:
1. How to gain root access?
2. How to instal android ICS or Jelly Bean on it, but with noobs description please
Thank you

Glad your tablet is working.
So first you want to go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460 and download "Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v31: [Improved Root-Method by Ariel Berkman]" There is a of stuff in that post but v31 was an update to the OP so trust that it is correct. You will download and run the bat and root your KF2.
Now to get a custom ROM you first need to install a 2nd bootloader and TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) The best thing you can do is read and ask if needed so you don't brick your Kindle.
Here is Hashcodes thread on how to install a 2nd bootloader and TWRP http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2100963
Here is Hascodes thread on getting the custom ROM put on your KF2 using ADB commands http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2100963
Here is a list of custom ROM's for KF2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2462878
Make sure to not use anything not intended specifically for the Kindle Fire 2 (otter) or you may hard brick your Kindle.

Can you post on how you got it unbricked from the screen you were talking about. I have the same problem but can't seem to fix it. Thanks if you could do that.

Plug your fastboot cable in. Then run the KFFirstAide.
And to all you toilers, first you flash 10.2.4 bootloader, and then boot up and install the Alien Box (Tweezermod), and then you get second bootloader. Instructions to thank Hashcode or FMkilo (or whichever the guy is).

Hey, sorry for the late reply...
Well first install the KFFirstAide ( the program with 40+ options ). You can find it easy here.
Now, you need to have factory cable. Turn off your Kindle, plug the factory cable and turn the Kindle On. You should see your Kindle in Fastboot status now, showing green and red light circles.
Next, start the KFFirstAide and run option 1 or 2, and when you get to the question "would you like us to switch your Kindle into Fastboot status" you should answer NO, because you already are into fastboot.
Then, just let the program do it's magic and you'll have your Kindle in it's original version of Android ( the Amazon version).
I hope this helps, let me know what you did
Cheers!

It's a pain in the ass sometimes...
When you connect it with the factory cable, does it show the Fastboot on the screen? If yes, make sure you answer the questions correctly from the KF First Aide program, for example if it asks you do you have the Kindle Fire 2 gen?
But if it cannot recognize the device at all and it shows "waiting for device" for the whole time, I really don't know what can you do, except disconnect and connect again...
Maybe you could send me photos of how it looks the screen after every step you make including the questions when you run the KF First Aide?
You can send it to my mail: [email protected] | no tricks, just wanna try to help |
I had that problem and I know how awful it is
Good luck!

How to get to TWRP from a bootloop

I have been tinkering with my fire sticks over the weekend. Unfortunately when updating Magisk on 1 of the sticks it's caused a bootloop of the first black amazon logo (doesn't even get to the white amazon logo screen)
So obviously I can't get access via ADB so can't send a reboot into recovery command.
I have bought myself a micro USB OTG cable ready to connect my USB keyboard. Does anyone know what keys to press on the keyboard when I can't only get to the black amazon logo to help me get into TWRP.
I am confident once I get into recovery I'm just not sure how to get there without ADB access.
Thanks in advance
Its OK I think I've found the answer:
Should you somehow end in a bootloop, TWRP contains a special boot menu that will be displayed when you boot the stick with an OTG-cable connected.
It will give you 5 seconds to hit cancel and stay in TWRP or reboot into the OS otherwise.
So in theory when u connect the USB otg cable and keyboard I should get an option to boot to recovery

Its good that you find the solution, and I don't want to be rude but please keep the forum tidy, this was a question from another section, and this question should be asked on the ROOT/Unlock thread of mantis. The posts shouldn't be scattered around the forum.
Have a nice day.
