recently, i updated to lolipop, i want to back up my stock recovery.img file, for later OTA updates.
because i want to root my phone and install TWRP, please i need a simple way to keep may stock recovery img file.
thank you
HTC ONE M8
You don't need to back it up. When the new future ota is out you download it, install it later and get the firmware zip out of the ota zip and take out the recovery.img out of the firmware zip. That's the stock recovery. So no need to back it up now.
Lollipop has brought back the ability to boot into TWRP. You can boot TWRP, root then back up recovery and boot with flashify.

Hi all,
I'm on 4.4.3. I did the full conversion on my at&t m8. I s-off and completely rooted with twrp recovery.
I'd like to flash the 4.4.4 ruu but i think that's going to wipe my phone, it did last time at least. Is there any way I can flash it via recovery so I wont lose my data? Is there any other option?
I enjoy stock unmolested vanilla android, I shouldve gone with a GPE version, but its initial investment was just too much
Manually flash the OTA after you've flashed the stock recovery from the 4.4.3 RUU

seems easy enough? can u provide a quick how to or share a link?
1. Extract the stock recovery from the 4.4.3 RUU and flash it using fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
2. Download the OTA package from the OTA thread in General
3. Copy to the phone
4. Boot into the stock recovery
5. Select to flash the update from SD card
6. Choose the new OTA
7. Profit
You can then flash TWRP re-root the phone

So I am going back to stock so I can get the 3.3 firmware. I read exocetdj's thread on OTA, stock recovery, and nandroid backups. I was able to find the version I need for the OTA and nandroid backup, but not the same version for stock recovery. BUT, in the OTA Zip file, inside the firmware zip file, is a recovery image. Can I use that recovery image? Or should I find a close enough stock recovery image in exocetdj's thread?
Thank you for your help.
Also, do I need to re-lock the bootloader in this process?
1. Recovery.img from OTA - yes
2. Need to relock bootloader - no
Backup stock recovery for future OTA updates?
Hello,
I am currently on lollipop 5.0.1. I am looking to root the device and install TWRP as my go to recovery. I have being advised to backup my stock recovery so I am able to go back and update via OTA in the future.
I am unsure what the process is to backup stock recovery, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Your stock recovery will be in the next update. When being notified you download it but don't install it yet, take out the recovery.img from the ota.zip and flash it before you actually install the full ota.
No need to back it up now.
as an alternative to the above (which works just fine btw)
on the M8, you can boot into TWRP instead of flashing it
Code:
fastboot boot <name of twrp>.img
that will get you to twrp recovery, while the stock recovery is still on the phone, from there you can do a nandroid backup
I finally managed to find out where my phone downloaded the Sprint Nougat OTA file, and copied it to my SDcard.
My phone is a Sprint HTC 10. The bootloader is unlocked and my recovery is TWRP, but other than that I am stock and unrooted.
Everyone says you need to be on stock everything to install an OTA update (though I had no issues installing previous OTA updates directly, but all of those were small), so I was reading up on flashing stock recovery.... but several people commented that flashing a stock recovery on their phone wiped it. I really don't want to take that risk, and with TWRP I can make a backup of my entire phone. So I wanted to know, if flashing an OTA update fails from TWRP, could that brick my phone bad enough that I wouldn't be able to flash the TWRP backup to restore it? Or can I recover as long as I can boot into... well, recovery. Would the OTA update overwrite the recovery too? Especially if I try to install it from within that recovery?
I was told to extract the "update.zip" file from the OTA.... but there is none in there, is the OTA zip file itself what they meant by "update.zip"?
flashing an ota with twrp won't work...at least it won't update the firmware bits.
I just bought this phone and it has TWRP recovery installed and running stock 3.35.401.12
Whenever i try to install the available OTA update it just boots into TWRP and nothing happens. I want the stock recovery image so that i could flash it in TWRP (or any other way) so that i would be able to install the OTA.
Thanks a lot.
