Hi all,
I'm on 4.4.3. I did the full conversion on my at&t m8. I s-off and completely rooted with twrp recovery.
I'd like to flash the 4.4.4 ruu but i think that's going to wipe my phone, it did last time at least. Is there any way I can flash it via recovery so I wont lose my data? Is there any other option?
I enjoy stock unmolested vanilla android, I shouldve gone with a GPE version, but its initial investment was just too much
Manually flash the OTA after you've flashed the stock recovery from the 4.4.3 RUU

seems easy enough? can u provide a quick how to or share a link?
1. Extract the stock recovery from the 4.4.3 RUU and flash it using fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
2. Download the OTA package from the OTA thread in General
3. Copy to the phone
4. Boot into the stock recovery
5. Select to flash the update from SD card
6. Choose the new OTA
7. Profit
You can then flash TWRP re-root the phone

as the title said, this is a good solution to get back to stock and to OTA update.
1- just download the awesome stock rom that made by mike1986 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546970&highlight=htc+one+x+*stock* (remember, the odexed one)
2- upload it to your SD
3- flash it normally as any custom rom using the CWM 5.8.4.0
4- flash the stock recovery which can be found at the same ROM thread (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img)
5- flash the stock boot.img, can be found at the same ROM thread (fastboot flash boot boot.img)
6- reboot
7- after rebooting, go to settings, about, software update
8- enjoy
just remember that it seems that mike's STOCK ROM already the latest updated one, so the update won't work till HTC officially releases the jelly bean.
dont forget the thanks button below
1.) is it necessary to lock the bootloader to install the OTA?
2.) i have a stock nand backup from my rom 1.29.
yesterday i flashed the boot.img from backup and restored the backup. after start my HOX came up with OTA update. so does i neet the original recovery.img too?
if yes which one can i take?
BR
1- actually i think relocking your bootloader is a must when u r running the original RUU, but here this is a stock rom to be flashed from ur CWM.
installing OTA just requires the stock boot.img and stock recovery, no need to relock the bootloader.
2- this is a fortune for me, wish i could have mine as well, then why not to restore it and get ur original OTA?
if your HOX updated the OTA already then no need to stock recovery, BTW your stock recovery can be found inside your origional RUU which can be found on filefactory server, am sure u've seen it before (just google how to extract RUU, then extract your stock recovery from it)

hi
u need to get stock recovery and re lock ur phone or else the OTA wont get installed i just did it today
see this my post on the same : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32368798&postcount=112
I'm currently running Viper X ROM on my HOX and i want to go back to stock for the JB OTA. I've made a back up in clockwork mod before flashing custom ROM.
Can i just restore the back up or do i need to do something else before? I'm a bit concerned because i had to flash boot.img from Viper X ROM before flashing the ROM itself.
So, do i need to flash boot.img from my backed up folder (stock ROM backup) or can just restore it? Or do i need to do something else?
In order to be able to update you need to flash the stock boot.img from the backup the backup stock rom and the stock recovery .....

so i flash the stock boot.img and in recovery mode restore the backup with clockwork mod?
yes, flash the boot.img boot into recovery and wipe everything except sd card and then restore the backup. After that flash the stock recovery and you are good to go

1: Phone will work with stock boot.img and backup
2:root is rom related not recovery related. The stock rom backup should be root free to receive ota's
3:stock recovery is absolutely necessary to receive ota's
4:stock recovery is related to the main version
Fastboot getvar version-main
Check if it is the 1.29 or the 2.17 version. You need the recovery corresponding to that number. Example if you need the 2.17 recovery you can download any stock recovery that starts with that number !
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1859714
Stock recovery's can be downloaded from there .

If you made the the backup with the custom recovery you can not use that one because it wil be the custom recovery cwm 5.8.4.0 so that's a no go
You have to download the real stock recovery !

It doesn't need to be root free. It does need to be stock, as in, all the apps are there and unmodified.

I currently have Stock 4.2.2 Rom - S-Off - Rooted - TWRP
How can I get to the newest Stock 4.3 (Radios, etc) ?
Is it easier to just flash stock recovery, then take the update, then flash TWRP and superuser back?
Or has someone made the update into a root-friendly flash-able zip yet?
Thanks in advance if this is a dumb question, but I wanted to ask so I get it right the first time.

Thanks for the info...
So I can just flash these with no loss of data? Or do will I need to restore data after I flash the rom?
My plan would be:
1) flash "Odexed Full ROM"
2) flash "2.10.605.1 firmware"
That should put me latest update stock right? (I might need to re-flash superuser)
I can flash all of this through TWRP?

You cannot flash the firmware in twrp.
It has to be done following the instructions in the post.
I would do firmware and then the rom.
Put the rom on your internal storage before flashing the rom.
Flash the firmware as instructed, then in recovery flash the rom, reboot.
Do not try to reboot in between, it wont work.
If you do it in that order you won't have to wipe, you will be on the latest OTA and have a rooted boot.img.
Supersu is installed already. You can prevent it from updating or flash the newest one here.
Read the OP and post#2 and follow it you should be fine.
Yes you want odex coming from full stock...
Thank you for all of the help santod040 !!
Your files and instructions worked perfectly.
I'll make sure to check in on your threads when the 4.4 update comes around.
So I am going back to stock so I can get the 3.3 firmware. I read exocetdj's thread on OTA, stock recovery, and nandroid backups. I was able to find the version I need for the OTA and nandroid backup, but not the same version for stock recovery. BUT, in the OTA Zip file, inside the firmware zip file, is a recovery image. Can I use that recovery image? Or should I find a close enough stock recovery image in exocetdj's thread?
Thank you for your help.
Also, do I need to re-lock the bootloader in this process?
1. Recovery.img from OTA - yes
2. Need to relock bootloader - no
Backup stock recovery for future OTA updates?
Hello,
I am currently on lollipop 5.0.1. I am looking to root the device and install TWRP as my go to recovery. I have being advised to backup my stock recovery so I am able to go back and update via OTA in the future.
I am unsure what the process is to backup stock recovery, any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Your stock recovery will be in the next update. When being notified you download it but don't install it yet, take out the recovery.img from the ota.zip and flash it before you actually install the full ota.
No need to back it up now.
as an alternative to the above (which works just fine btw)
on the M8, you can boot into TWRP instead of flashing it
Code:
fastboot boot <name of twrp>.img
that will get you to twrp recovery, while the stock recovery is still on the phone, from there you can do a nandroid backup
