Problems in Lollipop - possible to downgrade to Kit Kat? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone.
I own a HTC One M8 with CID 144, if I remember correctly. It's factory unlocked (all phones sold in Singapore are unlocked, by law), and I upgraded to Lollipop a couple of days ago, with firmware version 4.19.707.2 (Asia WWE).
I have noticed several issues, or perhaps bugs. If these can be resolved in Lollipop itself, that would be excellent - if not, I'd like to downgrade back to Kit Kat.
First - whenever I get a notification and don't unlock my phone to view it, the phone buzzes intermittently, again and again, until I check my phone. It doesn't behave like it did in Kit Kat and like it should in every other phone - vibrate twice, and stop.
Secondly, and related to the above problem, is that all my WhatsApp notifications vibrate, even when ALL notification types, both individual and group messages are set to NOT vibrate. Is the built-in notification system overriding WhatsApp's control over vibration and sound?
Next, I have Wi-Fi disconnection issues. I already sleep relatively far from the router, separated by three concrete walls, and I experienced disconnection, occasionally, in Kit Kat. It happens far more often now, even with Wi-Fi optimisation for battery switched off.
Next, I cannot tap on a notification when it appears to go into that app - also very different from Kit Kat behaviour. I can only slide it away and manually enter the app from either the home screen or the app drawer. In general, I don't much like the new notification look and feel.
Last of all, and ironically, my battery life seems to have decreased after upgrading to Lollipop - contrary to what Google promised.
Are there any solutions to these, or is there a way I can downgrade?
Thanks in advance.

No - not even rooted or unlocked.

Hmm I don't know if you can do that with everything stock. Only way I know is by flashing an RUU file. But you need unlocked bootloader for that, but not sure if you also need to be s-off.

To downgrade the bootloader you need indeed s-off. But there is a possibility that you can downgrade only the software. I am not 100% sure that the older kitkat roms work on the newest hboots but that's a trial and error.
So what you need to do is
Unlock the bootloader
Flash a custom recovery
Install a kitkat rom or restore a kit kat nandroid backup
or
Buy the sunshine s-off method and downgrade also the hboot which is indeed possible with a ruu or a firmware.

Thanks for the clear replies.
However, SunShine needs the Dalvik runtime - Lollipop uses ART. How do I change it? I can't find the option in Developer Options...

Then wait for a sunshine update that might get released or try the first method i described

I confirm that it is possible to downgrade to Kitkat.
I was on Lollipop 4.16.401.10, but I needed the xposed framework.
I first installed custom recovery
then installed a nandroid backup of 3.28.401.6 and via OTA back to 3.28.401.9

Thank you for confirming the idea

Didn't work for me. I flashed a complete stock nandroid 3.28.401.9 Rom. Wouldn't boot past HTC one screen.
Had to RUU back.
Maybe the intermediate step of flashing the ota fixed it for the guy above.

Well, I see. Does anyone have a RUU for CID 044, firmware version 3.32.707.9?

While I don't have an RUU for you, I do have this link to give you.

Hi,
I am facing the same issue. After upgrading to Lollipop, all notifications which come in the phone and are not read, the phone keeps on vibrating intermittently. The same happens on both vibrate or normal mode. Also, I've noticed that the notification sound is different as compared to the sound that I selected for notifications.
Whatsapp is where I am facing this issue the most. Even when I've put a group to mute, it still vibrates and keeps in intermittently vibrating until I don't swipe off the notification or read the messages.
DND mode does help in stopping the vibrations but thats not what want. I am still trying to figure out if this is bug or a feature because this is the only thread identifying this issue.
Any suggestions on how to get this corrected?
Thanks

Thanks for all the suggestions guys - but I did it the easy way. I had to send in my phone for service anyway (dirty speakers and cameras) and when the phone was returned to me, I got KitKat 3.32.707.9 back. Excellent.

I managed to find a fix for this constant, repeated vibration issue - it's actually in Accessibility, and also exists in KitKat, but is switched off. The option is called 'Notification reminder'; switch it off and profit.

Worse battery life
Hello,
How can I reflash the stock sense Lollipop rom? I searched about it on google and forums, haven't found something relevant to my case. I got the rom package from HTC Dev website. Now I am running stock sense lollipop 5.0.1. The reason why I want to do this is because the battery life is bad after the update. A lot of people say that their battery life improved after the OTA with 20-25%. MIne didn't . I tried everything: power it off and reboot it after several seconds, 2 factory resets and deleted cache 2 times. I don't know what else to do. If reflashing doesn't solve the problem I want to downgrade to 4.4.4. Two animations, 3 design updates and 4 new features are not worth dumping the battery like that.
Phone is bootloader unlocked and s-on. No root. Everything stock.
Before lollipop, with 4.4.4 I could have location on with battery saving setting, power saver off, auto brightness, 3g and Wi-Fi on all day and every app I could think of.
During the night time I would activate power saver and turn off Wi-Fi and 3g (just the phone on). The battery would last around 1 day and 5 to 10 hours until I got to 35-40 percent. Medium to intense use.
On Lollipop things are not so good. The battery on the same setup and usage is around 19 hours or less. And I can see it dropping while using the phone.
Facebook apps are NOT guilty, or any other app for that matter. I kept the phone factory state for 2 days. Same battery drainage. It's more than a week now since I installed the update.
I'm open for suggestions and solutions. On 4.4.4 it used to be the best phone out there for me.
Thanks and sorry for the lengthy post

Installed ARHD 22.2 over ARHD 40.3 , wiped data. It's working flawless. No need to downgrade the bootloader

So I'm s-off and unlocked but I'm tired of all the roms I've tried them all on 4.4!
Now to be honest I've tried some of the lollipop Roms but they take like 30mins to boot as I'm still on kit Kat firmware but some do Boot and run Fine it's just I want more options but I've been scared to upgrade my firmware because I don't want to be stuck there if I don't like it after testing ??? So once again I am T-Mobile HTC one m8 Unlocked Boot loader and S-off
Is it a Cake Walk or a Nightmare going to Lolli and or Back to Kit Kat Firmware ????? thanks for looking and Please Advise

It's a cake walk. No problems going back when you are S-Off.

I'm on T-Mobile and ive converted back and forth so many times to try out what's out there (international and GPE) that I'm finally back to stock 4.4.2 Kit Kat Tmo. So yes, it's very easy and so many guides to follow.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk

So on more Very Important Question k 2 actually but this one is of super importance
Is there away to do it with out loosing s-off and root ?
And Second can you guys Direct me to the best and or Safe/Simplest Guide as Most are so up in the air and Confusing ???? Thanks and Please Advise

[Q] Safestrap on rooted Sprint Galaxy S3 OTA 4.3 MK3

I've been using a factory ROM Sprint Samsung Galaxy SPH-L710 happily for quite a while. Outside of custom launchers and Widget Locker type stuff I've been trying hard to live [happily] within the factory constraints. Then I discovered Tasker, Daily Roads Voyager, and a bunch of other really fun stuff. And down the rabbit hole I went.
So thus far I've rooted using the excellent Saferoot found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50744761
Now I want to be able to do nandroid backups so I can capture snapshot-in-time backups of my device. I keep seeing reference for using Snapshot on the Sprint S3 but the only sources I've seen for downloading Safestrap do not specifically reference the Sprint Galaxy S3 so I'm unsure if it's supported or not.

You dont need safestrap on the sprint version of s3 since we dont have locked bootloaders. Its mainly for the variants with locked bootloaders. You can ODIN either TWRP, CWM or Philz.
It was my understanding that the latest OTA 4.3 release specifically locked the bootloader and installed Knox. Which is why I went with Saferoot to begin with.
The firmware only installed KNOX apps and bootloader. SO, you can remove KNOX from the phone but not the bootloader. NEVER try to downgrade the bootloader as you will brick. You are stuck on that bootloader until someone figures something out.
Edit: The bootloader is not locked.

So, the conclusion is there's no work around or tool to allow nandriod backups even after rooting the OTA 4.3 update. No Safestrap viable for this particular device and factory ROM?
You can create backups from CWM, TWRP or Philz at anytime even on 4.3 MK3 without any issues. There is no safestrap for the sprint variant only ATT and Verizon (to my knowledge).
For clarification then the Sprint variant can use odin safely? Are there specific ROMs that are we are limited to? I went the SafeRoot route myself but have been petrified to try anything else because it seems every post I read contradicts the one before it. I downloaded the Online Nandroid Backup app and it seems to be working. I landed here trying to educate myself on SafeStrap. All I want is 4.1.2 back on my phone. This OTA has totally made my once silky smooth handset a laggy battery sucking pos!

I have used ODIN numerous times and have had no issues! You can flash any ROM you wish just dont downgrade the bootloader or you will brick. BTW, 4.3 is silky smooth for me! I have my S3 running at least 24hrs and around 2.5 to 3hrs screen time (moderate to heavy use) per charge.

Thanks. My stock device started freezing up intermittently and randomly locking up and rebooting. Typing is a joke because it will freeze mid sentence and then all the sudden crap out all the keystrokes like it had to stop and think about what it was doing. Also the Google Maps change and YouTube change annoy the hell out of me. Maps will not lock in on GPS unless i pull down the info bar from the top of the screen and toggle the GPS button off and on. Just a major frustration. This is the only phone I've had to date that I had absolutely no complaints about until 4.3. Sorry for the rant but thanks for the info.

I've been perfectly happy with 4.3 and have had no issues, in fact it's made my S3 the first Android phone I haven't specifically hated after using an iPhone for almost 2 years. Everything works great, and it's fast, and I've loaded all sorts of custom launchers and lock screens and now have it rooted and running various Tasker automation. Great stuff. I'm finally sold on Android.
Regarding your random reboots/locks I had a Galaxy S2 with a dying power button switch that used to do that for months before I finally attributed it to the power switch specifically (when it finally died completely I finally realized it was the switch all along). That doesn't explain any other issues you're having, but it's something to consider. If you're rooted you can probably disable the power switch and assign some other hard button to work as the power button for a couple days as a test.
Good luck.
Thanks for the insight. I don't think it's hardware related since it was never an issue before the OTA but I am willing to try anything and will try it if I ever get the SuperSU to keep from randomly stopping.

I really need some help here. I'm looking to switch to the s3 but all this talk of knox and stuff is really turning me away from it because rooting and using custom roms are a big thing to me, i just need a device that can support it well. So what exactly do you mean when you say downgrade the bootloader? and would i be able to flash roms that run kitkat? or would i have to update my device to kitkat and root while running 4.4?

This is what I would do if you dont have 4.4:
1 Odin the official stock ND8
2 Flash TWRP 2.6.3.0
3 Go to the dev thread and folow the direction in OP and flash Wicked X 7.3 (custom 4.4) & thank bilgerryan
If you have 4.4 then proceed with 2 & 3!
You will then have a custom 4.4 rom on your S3!

2. flash Philz recovery cause that one supposedly works best with ND8

[Q] Trouble with ARHD 9.1.

I have some experience with modding Google Nexus 3 with success but having some trouble with doing the same on the M8. Trying to install ARHD 9.1 on this phone but I'm getting stuck on the HTC logo after install. I have been following the instructions here and am successful with custom recovery (TWRM) and root. Before installing the zip through recovery, I wipe system, data, cache, dalvik cache. The installation itself is successful but it does not boot. I have been able to reinstall the stock rom found here with success so I'm able to recover from it and I also have no issue with installing ViperOneM8.
I tried using the firewater exploit but it looks like my phone was already patched and it remains S-ON. I was reading about the necessity of S-ON here but it doesn't seem required for ARHD, but it's the only thing left I think is causing the issue.
What am I missing..?

Thanks, I didn't realize that mike's stock de-bloat ROM was compatible with receiving OTA updates. There's a lot of good information around here but it's almost always scattered and sometimes not very clear.
I have also since found these stock updates which should work rather well for returning to T-Mobile stock with the bloat if needed. My "OS" and main-version using "getvar" still returns a blank value, but it looks like that can be common and not a detriment to updating OTA in the future.
I don't like the Kid Mode and all that stuff, hiding it is not sufficient as I like to have like a slim build so I may start again by returning to the ARHD stock ROMS if I can accept the 4.4.3 update OTA (as long as I return to stock recovery before then) and try to customize from there.

Cannot update HTC M8. Tried everything. HELP!

First of all, I'm sorry if this has been solved before or I if am too imcompetent to do this. I'm having an imported taiwanese version CID HTC__621 and running the stock 1.54.709.12 4.4.2 rom and with hboot 3.16 and am S-On. My bootloader is also unlocked. In short, I am trying to update my M8 to 4.4.3 but to no avail, I got the red triangle. Having checked the log, I found that I had the KKbox_android.apk and who knows what else missing. I've searched high and low by visiting many threads and even tried to extract the apk from the update package to put in the data/preload/ folder. I've also been to obscure taiwanese threads and, ultimately, come to a dead end with the unexpected content message.
Other than that, after an entire day's worth of searching and hundreds of tabs opened as well as too many files to count downloaded and deleted, I am back to square one. Having tried relocking the bootloader and flashing the ruus, installing the stock nandroid backups, trying to flash the firmware from the update package and getting the 12 signature very fail and the 99 unknown fail messages and trying all other alternatives, I am still stuck at the same place.
The only reason why I hadn't updated before was because I wanted to get S-Off. However, after months of waiting, I got greeted with the disheartening message that firware was dead. And I don't think I'd like to dish out $25 for sunshine. I simply want to update to 4.4.4, in which I have to go through 4.4.3 first when updating through OTA to install the Skydragon rom. Neither can I get any other custom roms because they all need higher hboot versions. I also couldn't find any hboot standalone files which I doubt would work. I'm sick of sense and I really can't stand it any longer.
So does anyone have the apks or any other methods? As I am really out of ideas. I've wasted so much of my time trying to get this thing to update I don't even know what I'm doing anymore. And, did I mention before? I'm really sick of sense. I've never had this much of a hassle to install a custom rom on any other phones. In fact, they all went well the first time and this is the only phone I've had that's so adamant to change. It really does look like the best phone of 2014 is also the most troublesome phone of 2015.
Sorry for the long post.

I CHANGED MY CARRIER AND NOW MY PHONE WORKS LIKE A CHARM.
IM SURE THAT WILL SOLUTION WORK WITH Verizon and at&t HTC M8.
Two days ago l bought used htc one m8 and then it was working great, but yesterday I saw that my l dont have any signal, but still l can surf on internet.
I tried switching airplane mode on and off but signal got back for seconds. Also l tried to use this *#*#4636#*#* and refresh my Smsc. When l took my Sim out and put back in, my signal came back for minute or so.
Also when l tried to make call then my signal got lost instantly.
Currently lm running 5.0.1 Lollipop.
Can installing a custom ROM fix that error or downgrading to 4.4 KitKat?
Do you know what firmware you're running? You could try flashing a custom ROM and/or flashing the firmware again. Is it rooted?

[Australia] HTC 10 Australian

Hi guys,
I got my HTC 10 last week - phone is a big improvement from the m8.
I am running Telstra's latest firmware - Have s-off already...
Telstra's latest firmware is 1.53.841.6 with Leedroid ROM - have been trying to get VOLTE.
I never got VOLTE with stock because I rooted so fast and S-OFF and installed custom ROMs.
So I had to install stock system image 1.53.841.6, reinstall stock recovery and factory reset and VOLTE icon shows up instantly. Install TWRP and VOLTE remains. But if you install a custom rom and do a full wipe seem to lose VOLTE. Also have to have the telstra firmware to VOLTE to work, I tried with WWE and no go. Also had to ring up telstra as it wasn't activated. So if you are having trouble getting it - might be best to double check. Even though my provisioned flag was on. *#*#4636#*#* to check - tap phone info.
@xlrate reported not wiping data and installing VIPER was able to keep VOLTE. (Updated the customize folder in the rom with my Telstra back up, also the build prop to do this) Also TELST001 cid has to be on.
Has anyone got VOLTE working on a custom ROM on WWE Firmware?
So Aussies... Who's got their new HTC 10?

Telstra OREO update
http://fotadl-az.htc.com/secure/OTA....48.841.31_release_519847tp9bagwfkglchg5u.zip
@Sneakyghost isn't doing the firmware updates anymore.
If you need to use the firmware.zip out of the OREO zip and need to a custom recovery either replace the recovery.img with twrp.img (rename it of course) in the firmware.zip - or flash one after installation.
I got mine about a month ago.. All I've done so far is root it.. (even after all these years, it still sounds wrong)
I normally run ARHD, but, Mike hasn't mentioned developing for the 10, so, I'm stuck atm, not really interested in running a massively modded ROM. But, last night the OTA notification popped up for 1.53.841.6.. So, I'm going to have to do something - the notification is annoying me. So, I guess I have to work out how to update it.
I hadn't even considered the VoLTE requirements.. I just assumed it would all work, even on a custom ROM. 4G did, I didn't think this would be any different.
Is VoLTE worth hanging on to? I don't really get it.. Is it like VOIP for mobiles?

I have had VoLTE working with Leedroid after I used the telstra 1.53 system/customize & parts of the build.prop on the 1.30 base... Haven't been able to get it working on 1.80 base.
Have had to use the telstra firmware for it work, doesn't work on WWE. So it is kinda a pain to get working.
VoLTE is better call quality and if you are on a call you can use LTE/4g to use the internet... Without VoLTE when on calls your phone 3g
EDIT - don't think OTA will work since you are rooted unless you went systemless root
I guess I don't 'appreciate' VoLTE as much as I should, because I rarely make phone calls..
Sadly, not Systemless root. So, I think I need to go back to stock, update and re-root. It's not something I've had to worry about before. So, it's kinda frustrating, and a little too complicated for me to totally understand.
I was going to de-brand it, and just run the WWE RUU.. But, maybe I'll wait for the 1.80 Telstra update and worry about it then.
I got rid of the notification

Anyone experiencing an issue with NFC? While on stock 1.21.841.8 (and locked), worked without issue. Since updating to 1.53.841.6 (and unlocked), can't read my Opal card now ie no vibration, no sound, no anything. Haven't tested my tap & pay banking app yet (which did work without issue prior to updating).
Yes I also had and issue with NFC. Would not read opal card and was an absolute pain to try and read my Amex and Visa card.
Ended up getting another issue with it and returned the phone under warranty for NFC and the other issue.
Still waiting to get a phone back ?

Yeah NFC doesn't work with mine now on 1.53.
I did get a vibrate and a sound when I was on earlier firmware but not now.
Just hoping that the 1.8 update fixes this stuff.......

Tried reflashing the 1.53 firmware again (twice) to see if it fixes it, but it's still not working ie Can switch it on and off, but it does not respond to my opal card.
It's only taken Telstra until this month to push out 1.53, so who knows when (or if) 1.80 will happen. Now I'm trying to decide whether it's worth sending back for another handset or waiting to see if the next OTA will fix it. My biggest concern is that the replacement could be on 1.21 and I could possibly end up with the same issue all over again!

I just tried to NFC on 1.53 and it isn't working very well, hardly at all. I got it to work 3 times in about 15 mins...
Previously I think when I was on 1.30 firmware it was working well before but just had to hold it near the head phone jack.
Any Telstra users want to test out the Telstra firmwares
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/how-to/2016-05-27-fastboot-flashing-firmware-t3387520
Make sure you back-up the rom & back up internal storage refer to later posts in that thread.
https://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Device-Updates/Software-Updates-01-07-2016/td-p/585953 Telstra 1.80.841.8 firmware is coming 25-Jul
Leedroid is the best rom for Telstra users. Running it myself and working perfectly, now supports Telstra with carrier support & VoLTE working - thanks @LeeDroid
*Only works on Telstra firmware.
Install Ice yesterday (only got my phone Friday ), really like it over the stock rom.
Some people complained about the LED but I like it. My only complaint about my M8 was how bright the LED was specially in the dark when you're trying to get to sleep.
Another problem I'm having is file transfers freeze when using a USB 2 port on Windows 10.
I like my new M10 but not sure if I like it over the M8 as of yet. I preferred the speaker arrangement on the M8 and having the home, back buttons etc on the screen rather then down the bottom.
I have to admit I'm not a fan of the "Samsung" look at all which is why I bought HTC in the past to begin with. I didn't want to be a part of the flock.
Hey guys,
I'm looking to get the 10 but imported, could someone (especially looking for someone with Optus) check their box to see what specific model it is (e.g. 10h or 10u)?
Thanks guys
The Telstra model is a HTC 10h
ICE (InsertCoin) v2.0.6 supports Telstra also now too. Thanks @baadnewz

Awesome, thanks morgy59
Found out that Telstra's policy for DOA/ELF replacements are within 30 days of purchase. Since a return will result in a repair, I'll wait to see if the OTA will fix the NFC issue first before sending back.
Has anyone experienced an NFC issue on Telstra stock, only to have it disappear after switching to a cusom ROM?
