I am running a stock ATT Galaxy sIII. I have never rooted it. Like a lot of you I was very excited to see the jelly bean release. I downloaded the latest Kies software from Samsung on my Windows 7 box. I am running Windows 7 Enterprise. I installed it and proceeded to connect my phone. I have the usb debugging checkbox checked. The pc recognizes the phone and brings up the popup if i want to do the camera import or open a file explorer when I connect it. I am able to open the file explorer and see both my card and my phone just fine. However, when I have Kies up and connect the phone it just says Connecting and sits and spins forever never connecting. I never get any errors. I tried the troubleshooting where I re-installed the drivers and it still does not work.
I saw several postings on many websites complaining that 64bit os have issues with Kies. I then did the whole thing on a windows XP box. I still get the same exact response. Sit and spin forever just trying to connect.
Any ideas or suggestions? I even removed the memory card and it made no difference. I really want jelly bean and I am pretty frustrated. Thank you for your help.

I have problems with it as well but got it to work on xp, couldn't get it to work using an HTC cord all I did was switch to the cable that came with the S3 and it worked but in my case there must be something wrong with the HTC cable. Try a different cable just in case.

make sure you use the stock samsung usb and plug it directly into the back of the pc not through a usb on the front of the pc or especially thrpugh a peripheral.
Good Evening folks,
I'm posting here after spending the better part of 2 days trying to figure out why this doesn't work.
So, i have the following:
model: GT-N7100
Version: 4.1.1
Build: JRo03C - ALJ1
I run a PC with windows 7 and also have a laptop with windows 8.
Now, initially i only wanted to root my device to install an addblocker on it and get rid of some bloatware. so i went and got samsung note2 toolkit here on XDA. (also tried others)
but no matter how i tried the pc (nor laptop) would see the note 2. it would plug in, it would charge... but windows ignored it otherwise.
i have tried al 8 of my USB ports on the desktop, and all 3 on the laptop. none of them work
3 different USB cables.
re-booted more then times then i can count.
i have manually installed the samsung drivers.
i have tried installing the windows MTP Porting kit
all to no avail.
So before i can even START to root... i need it to to play nice with my machines... anyone have ANY suggestions on what the hell is going on here.
If your main priority is to root then use exynos abuse

but my problem still persists:
why oh why wont windows just play nice with the phone?
Did you install Kies on your PC? That program needs to be open when you connect your phone and then it will install the needed drivers.

Or install the drivers using the Note Toolkit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923956
Does it show as an unknown device in windows under device manager?
I'm having the same issue but I have a suspicion that its the USB port on the phone itself as my gnex can use the same cable/USB port and show up as mtp.

my windows is same
My Note 2 N7100 is 'seen' by my windows 8 machine, but it doesnt seem to copy/ paste anything. Pops up with an error. The same happens on a Mac Lion machine. Installed the Android File Transfer app, but the moment I connect my phone, it pops up a message saying please restart your device so that it can be detected. I am tired of transferring individual files over AirDroid Any help?

first of all I forgot to mention that this should've been posted in Q&A section
for the problem try the following steps. after each one of them try connecting again. keep net disconnected while you follow the steps.
if it starts working then stop other wise continue.
1)use a diff comp, but you already did that , use a different cable, you didn't mention it
2)try uninstalling drivers via programs and features.
3)try installing drivers - preferably via mskip's toolkit
if you have windows 7, then directly install it
if you have windows 8, then first disable driver signature enforcement via this guide's last question.
4)try re installing windows. if you don't wanna do that then
open device manager
in view -> show hidden devices
delete each one that says samsung, note ii or note 2, android, google, adb, gt-n7100, n7100
this will ensure that you truly remove drivers
follow step 3) after this.
Hope I helped
All the usual and helpful ideas have been listed and you should definitely work thru those to make sure you are not missing something obvious but critical. I also use Win8 (64) and all was well with my Note2 showing up as an MTP device and wll working then one day, seemingly spontaneously, it suddenly didnt! When I would plug my Note2 in, Windows would give me a USB error telling me it could nto recognise the device! To cut a long story short, I tried my wife's S2 and IT appered fine as an MTP device happily enough, so that ruled out the cable, the port and the computer/OS.
I then tried my Note2 on my laptop, and once again it came up as USB error, so the problem was following the DEVICE around....
After a lot of googling, I tried on thing that fixed it instantly:
On the phone, go into Settings, Security and delete all the "Device Administrators" which in my case was just my Email app. That did delete my email account from my phone (contacts, email etc) but didnt matter as phone is just a dumb client to the mail server so no loss of any real data.
Once removed, I then plugged phone in and BOOM! MTP device happily appeared! I then went back in and just re-added my email account and re-activated Device Administrator when asked. Working ever since.
Not saying this is your problem, but it was an eye opener to me that the Device Administrator could 'lock out' the USB connection of the device....
Hope this helps.

I would also recommend checking your Windows Update log - especially if you have it set to automatic updates. After I installed the drivers off of the Samsung website, Windows Update tried to "Update" my drivers to an older version (I do manual Windows Updates). The first time it asked, I let it, and my phone couldn't connect anymore. Once I stopped that silliness I stopped having problems.
same problem usb not conecting with my pc windows7
all this is my same problem which I facing help me about how to slove this matter

I was having the same problem, but I was using a USB cord that I had from my old phone. Switched to the white one that came with my Note 2 and it started working.
Hi,
after getting my Note 2 LTE back from repair (they changed the mainboard, speaker, vibrator and USB port) I'm now trying to root it using Odin 1.85 (have tried 3.07 too) and CF Auto Root. The problem is that neither the phone nor the PC detects any USB connection at all while in download mode, ie. it doesn't even pop up with a driver request or anything. Device manager doesn't show any change in devices either. In this case the old "nothing happens" truly applies...
I've tried with going into download mode with voldown+home+power and with 'adb reboot download', with the only difference between the two is that when using ADB it doesn't display the white text in the upper left corner.
The PC runs Windows 7 (I used this same machine to root the phone when I got it back in November, and I haven't changed anything on it, other than the usual software updates). I've tried two cables that both work when connecting the phone while booted normally. The one I'm using now worked fine to transfer about 1 GB of pictures back to the memory card.
It's running the latest 4.1.2 (JZO54K.N7105XXDMC3) and is fully charged.
EDIT: I've now tried with uninstalling Kies and the Samsung USB drivers completely but the problem remains.
Thanks,
Magnus
Note 2 Android 4.1.2 download mode connect to PC
I have the same problem. Although your post is old, yet unanswered, I'm not sure if im posting correctly, or must create a new thread.
I connected my Note 2 to PC-USB during download mode. Also no action, but device manager showed a yellow triangle, while Odin running and pointing to a file for rooting.
I read in a post once that upgrading to Android V4.1.2 prevents rooting. How can I degrade it?
Phone connects successfully in normal mode.
Samsung Galaxy Note 2, SGH-T889 of T-Mobile (locked to carrier). Android V4.1.2
Tried on 2 PCs with Windows 8.
Also tried turning phone on to Download Mode after plugging it to USB.
I tried unlocking it, the unlocking software required phone to be rooted first!
I have a Stock, unrooted Sprint S3 SPH-L710 Android 4.3 Build number JSS15J.L710VPUCMK3 Hardware version is L710.14.
Problem is, I've recently have had two different S3's and both of them cant transfer files over USB when connected to my PC running Windows 7. Windows recognizes the phone as a media device and I can browse the file system but I cant transfer files to or from the S3. Windows goes through the copy process but the progress bar doesn't ever move and eventually fails after 30 minutes. During this time the progress bar hasn't moved at all, maybe a 1/4"
I have all the drivers installed and everything and have tried different USB cables and no luck. Have also tried to root both devices and ODIN see's the phone and goes through the process of root but always fails at the stage of installing the recovery.
From the information I've provided above it seems pretty obvious the problem is with the computer or USB cable but my girlfriend also has a S3 and hers is fine. She can connect and transfer files no problem, quick actually. Hers is the same hardware revision and version of Android.
Any ideas would be great!!
Thinking about it, seeing as it's happened with the past 2 S3's I've had and my girlfriends phone is fine, maybe it is Windows causing the fault and my girlfriends phone has some unidentified "thing" that allows to bypass the Windows "fault" ??
Anyways I'm lost and would very much love some help
I apologize if this isn't the proper forum.
I had a Samsung Galaxy S3 (The non LTE version) with T-Mobile. I have used the KIES 3 software to backup my phone.
I got a Samsung Galaxy S4 (the M919 model) with T-Mobile.
First, I connected the phone to my Win7 64-bit Home Edition pc with the same Galaxy S3 USB cable. It charges, and I hear the "boo-beep" and Windows 7 says it's installing device software and then comes back and says "unknown device" installation failed. In Device Mangler, it shows up under USB controllers, for some reason as "unknown device".
Okay, so I reinstalled the Samsung USB drivers.
No go
I used the actual S4 cable that came with the phone.
No go.
I have done the debug USB mode. No go.
I have verified that the MTP protocol is used (vs. Camera) and that it's set to MTP+ADB
I've switched back and forth to camera vs. MTP
Windows seems to detect the USB signal in that it knows when it's plugged in and when it's not, but it seems to IMMEDIATELY (and I mean very very fast, like under 1 second) "find" it always as a USB controller -> Unknown Device
So, I've tried my laptop. windows 7 64-bit. Same thing.
I had a spare pc around, so I even reformatted the drive and put a fresh copy of windows 7 on it. Same thing.
I've manually installed the Samsung drivers (without KIES). Still no go.
So I guess my questions:
1) Is there some other method to verify USB port is working properly? (like can you connect it to something else and have it work)? I'm assuming it's good since not only does it charge, but it at least is attempted to connect with Windows 7
2) I've got 2 more cables ordered --official Samsung ones--just in case
3) Can you root and unroot a phone without USB? It seems they all require USB drivers, and ODIN to work. I ended up having to manually backup the S3 via GCloud or whatever to get my stuff transferred over.
Oh, I also have an SD card in the phone.
Yes, I tried unmount it, and even removing it, rebooting, etc. Still no go.
I am trying to find an XP machine to see if that works any better.
thank you.
