Hi Everyone
I've got a HTC One M8 which I bought off a forum which was already rooted and runs GPE.
Everything has been fine, but I've been receiving the notifications to update to Lollipop, which I'd like to do. I click on the update and it downloads it. When it goes to install the update the phone reboots and boots into TWRP. I click on install and select the update zip. but I then get an error, please see the attached images.
Can anyone shed on any light on whats going wrong?
THanks in advance fo all replies
1) Its the update to 4.4.4 that is rolling out for AT&T, not 5.0.
2) You need to re-install stock recovery in order to install OTA. Also, the system needs to be stock (stock ROM). Root is okay (although you will lose root). Unlocked bootloader is also okay.
Hi thanks for the reply.
I'm based in the UK, so not sure that applies to me?
When I bought the phone the bloke said it would receive updates OTA. I'm hoping someone can explain the error messages in getting and help me upgrade to 5.01.
Thanks
Is it the AT&T version? This is the AT&T specific forum section.
Sorry, no it's not an AT&T version.
How do I go about getting it moved to the correct forum?
Thanks

I'll notify the mods to move to the correct section.
My 2nd point from Post#2 above still holds. You can't install an OTA with custom recovery (TWRP). You need to install stock recovery for your version from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2701376
Also need to restore to stock ROM, if its been altered by root in any way.

So I am running the stock rom but have root access. the update pops up every 5 minutes to remind me to install it. I let it install and about 3 second in i get a yeild sign with an exclamation point in it. and the phone stops there. I waited for about 3 hours and nothing happened. Anybody know what I need to do here? I used Galaxy Nexus root toolkit v1.3 to root my phone. BTW i am with verizon
For as far as i now you cant update a rooted device. i sugest unrooting an try to update agian.
reply
yea that's what I thought I was going to have to do. but wanted to see if there was an update package someone had made for rooted devices like some others had.
nvm i think im going to trade the phone
So no one has an answer on this?

Yes you can. You can't update a phone with CWM recovery though.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Correct a rooted phone can update but not with any custom recovery. You need to flash back to the factory stock recovery.

OK so looks like everyone is here was incorrect. The 4.04 rooted update is here in the XDA forums all i needed to do was flash it and the new antenna and everything is working fine now. here are the links.

Your right, stupid answers, that's not an ota update you did. That was pulled from a phone which was updated and packaged into a flashable file to use on a rooted device. But a carrier ota update as your device was asking you to update will not work without stock recovery.

Isn't that exactly what i asked for second post in? Point is if you knew that, why didn't you say so? Look there's nothing wrong with being wrong every once in a while but be graceful about it. And if your going to give advice make sure you fully read the question and offer decent advice. You were saying there was no way to update it without unrooting and flashing back to stock. That was after I asked "yea that's what I thought I was going to have to do. but wanted to see if there was an update package someone had made for rooted devices like some others had." Is that not exactly what I asked for????

Well, you are right that there are a lot of partially right and partially wrong answers in this thread. But what are you saying is not exactly right either.
1) There is a difference between updating your existing build (like what you had asked to do in the first post) and flashing an entirely new build.
2) There is a difference between running a stock ROM (like what you were running before) and running a ROM that looks like it's stock, but is not (like what you are running now).
3) Root has NO impact whatsoever on your ability to install OTA updates on your stock ROM.
4) An OTA update will NOT install with a stock recovery UNLESS you are using the stock recovery version that came with the build you are using. (It seems like a lot of toolkits are flashing non-matching stock recoveries).
5) An OTA update file can EASILY be installed if you have CWM installed. See here.
6) Your phrase "unrooting and flashing back to stock" is silly, as flashing back to stock replaces your ROM, so why would you need to "unroot" your current ROM only to flash a stock ROM overtop? You don't root a device - you root an Android OS build. The phrase "root my device" does not make any sense.
Hi,
I've searched but not found answers to my questions, so I apologize if these are repeats. Like many of you, I've gotten the notification that version 4.3 is ready for my Verizon HTC One. I used RumRunner originally, so I am rooted and have s-off, but aside from that I'm running the stock ROM. For the record, I have run a few scripts (from these forums) and apps ("NoBloat") to remove the Verizon bloatware, so I'm not exactly running "pure" stock.
Here are my questions:
1. What's the best way to get the phone to stop bugging me if I want to stay on 4.2? Can I turn off the notification? I'm not sure which app controls this, so I'm currently unable to get it to stop notifying me.
2. If I wanted to try downloading and installing the OTA update (I am running the TWRP recovery), where would I find the downloaded file in the recovery directories, and what is the file name? Is there any risk to doing thison top of my current ROM? I kind of don't want to bother with restoring to stock, then updating, then re-rooting/etc. (Hence question one.)
Thanks in advance for any advice, folks!
Cheers!

2) YOU MUST be STOCK, and the stock recovery to take the OTA assuming you are on the .15 version. Here is the link to the stock recovery: http://goo.gl/OdVbX6
You can flash one of santod040's stock odex roms right on top of your current ROM. NO need to wipe data.
Some advice before continuing, make sure you are not only s-off, but bootloader unlocked as well ( believe me it will save you a headache ) Here how WITHOUT HTCDEV
Then swap out the recovery, then take the OTA, flash back your recovery, then flash superSU to the ROM, rooted! That's how i did mine.
Hi!
I got an M8 a few weeks ago, and regretfully wasn't thinking and allowed a few OTA updates.
So I was at firmware version 2.22.531.5, Android 4.4.3. There were 2 other OTA updates pending that I ignored because I realized that it may make it harder to root or s-off. I realize now I already performed the updates which would make Firewater not work.
I unlocked the bootloader, and flashed TWRP 2.8.0.1, then flashed the latest SuperSU.
Now the update notices stopped.
Few questions:
1. Does anyone know what updates beyond the version above were sent OTA, and how beneficial these updates are?
2. I'll probably get sunshine...but might wait. Can I install a different ROM without S-off?
3. Since I'm at 4.4.3, I may stay with stock until 4.5 (or whatever L is). But I definitely want to get some junk off the phone. I was going to use Titanium and uninstall a bunch of stuff... I have had a few HTC phones before and could identify what apps were part of the ROM framework, but it's not as easy to discern what apps I need to keep on this phone. Does anyone know of a thread that talks about what stock apps can be uninstalled? Or, in the alternative, if you have deleted apps, can you let me know which ones?
I know that's a lot of questions... Thank you in advance for any answers!

1, pretty sure that's latest update
2, u can still install custom roms etc. u won't be able to downgrade firmware/change variant of m8 without s off
3, Check HERE
Thank you!
I had one follow up question...
If I had just gone with sunshine from the start (and not gone with the token from HTC to unlock the bootloader), would I have still gotten OTA updates?
Which change (custom recovery, unlocked bootloader) stops the OTA updates?
Thanks to anyone again in advance!

you would have been fine with OTA from the start, the following stops OTA updates:
custom recovery installed
missing system apps removed
incorrect firmware etc
You can freeze apps with Titanium, and if doing so doesn't cause any issues, go ahead and uninstall.

Ok...But before I read this, I was just going through settings and I checked the "check for updates" section, and it wants to install firmware version 2.22.531.6. So maybe if you are still using stock (despite installing custom recovery), you still get OTA updates?
The update sounds minor given it's incremental version (but tmous/HTC claims it's for important security updates), and I'd probably ignore it... But unfortunately, because I checked in the first place and perhaps because I'm on stock (minus a few apps I'm trying to delete: Amazon, Facebook, Kid Mode), for whatever reason the update reminder stays in my notifications and is pretty insistent.
Can I install this without calamity?
Thank you!

You will get the OTA notification just fine with custom recovery, and it will download as well. The problem is, when you go to install, OTA requires stock recovery and will fail when it doesn't find it. Might also bootloop looking for stock recovery, can't remember exactly.

Oh boy... So what's the solution? It finally downloaded on its own and is now pestering me to install. I don't want to deal with a bootloop. ****...
Can I delete the update from recovery, it just disable the updater and delete it?
What are my options? Thanks!!

The OTA zip should be in your download folder on internal memory, delete this then uncheck auto update checking and u should be without the constant notifications.
If you want to update, u will need to reinstall a fresh nand with all stock apps included

I think I'm going to do this (install nand). I am going to get sunshine/s-off, then flash fresh stock RUU... will I still need to then lock bootloader?
Could you just give me a short list of steps to do this? I want to lock bootloader with s-off because I want get the @$&)!& HTC free 100GB Google Drive promo and all the updates.
I really appreciate it Archer...
No problem
1, sunshine s off
2, Flash relevant nand/firmware
3, use this guide to stock lock (not relock) bootloader HERE
4, u will have a stock m8 with S off ready for future OTAs (remember not to remove any apps preinstalled in the nand)
not sure of the 100GB promo as i use dropbox lol :silly::highfive::good:

Cool... And I have read that as long as you do it that way (using echo -ne '\x00....' and not "fastboot oem lock" when in fastboot mode with adb running) you will get "***LOCKED***" back and not RELOCKED.
When it's RELOCKED Google can't confirm your information so the promo won't work...But if locked, you can do it.
Now I just have to do it all..
Thanks!!

Hi everyone!
I recently unlocked my bootloader and rooted my m8.
I tried using firewater to "s-off" my phone and unfortunately, it did not work out. The way I understand it, I cannot install stock ROMs (such as the 5.0.1 GPE) without "s-off." Now, I want to unroot my phone and stick to waiting for the OTAs to roll out instead.
I followed the instructions in the "returning to stock" thread and noticed that I have no version main (see attached image). I looked around the forums and saw that the advice was to flash the latest TWRP version. Since I'm stuck with a phone that I cannot update, I'm trying to be careful now. Can anyone please confirm if flashing the latest TWRP will bring my version main back?
The noob in me also has a few questions/requests as well:
1. Since my phone is rooted, I cannot receive OTA updates and upgrade to lollipop once these updates roll out?
2. Please tell me which files to download to return to stock. Just trying to be really careful this time around.
3. Lastly, is it also true that I can only install custom ROMs once have rooted? As to stock ROMs, I can't install them until I get "s-off"?
Thanks a lot, everyone! Cheers!

Do I have to flash the latest TWRP version before proceeding?
Hi, first of all I want to say that I am relatively new to android and therefore only have a basic understanding of everything. My desire EYE is currently on 4.4.4 rooted and have been having problems upgrading it to 5.0, I know I have to unroot and return to stock in order to be able to flash the stock recovery and be able to then flash lollipop on there. Problem is whenever I flash one of the stock 4.4.4's found on here superuser installer is still there (even when I tell to TWRP to not install it) and when I got to the bootloader is still says that the software is Modified so am still unable to flash the stock recovery and get lollipop.
Can anybody help shed some light on this problem and possibly help me fix it?

Thanks for your reply but have already tried this and when I tried booting into the recovery menu it gave me the red triangle because I have modified system partition, and all my efforts so far to change it to official have so far been unsuccessful
In fact tried it again and it worked this time, however when I try and download the update on my phone a message pop's up saying my phone can't be updated because the software is modified and not official HTC firmware
