return to stock rom

hi, I did a trade with some here on the XDA for a galaxy nexus. The phone comes with BAMF ROM but I am thinking of returning to the completely stock rom. Since I do not know much information on this phone, I thought I will ask before doing anything stupid.
I am not sure exactly if this is a international or playstore phone (I think it is international) but I do know it is a GSM phone.
Also, it appears to me that the phone is already unlocked (and I think rooted but cannot be sure).
So my question is how exactly should I go through to get the completely stock as I kind of want to try stock JB first. Do I need to relock it and download the image from google (which image as I see there are two version of phone.
I may try different rom in the future so can I just download teh image and flash the rom without relock it? Or I should still lock the phone, flash, unnlock, unroot?
A little bit of background. I am using the phone on T Mobile's network here in the US, so I want to be able to continue using hte phone on the same T MO.

Quick question, I think my bootloader is still unlocked as when I checked the bootloader, it looks it still says unlocked. Now after I have flashed the stock rom, should I still root it and also install the recovery if I ever plan to play around with the different roms? As of now, when I into recovery, I see the little andrid icon but no selection.

If/when you want to root and mess with ROMs, you'll be using a custom recovery like CWM. You don't need to flash it until you choose to do those things.

BTW, I notice there's a very nice tool on the sticky that does everything. I am curious if I use that tool and let say choose to unlock it again or root again and such, would that be any issue? Ie, if it's already unlocked and you run unlock again, would that relock, etc?

You can easily root too if you want to in the future
I think you're talking about the toolkit... Me and others here don't recommend using that... Unlocking/locking the bootloader is easy anyways...

Flashing a custom recovery is part of the rooting process.

Don't use 1-click toolkits. You know how to do it manually, do it manually.

[Q] Only Root Galaxy Nexus without erasing any data

I've using my Galaxy Nexus (GSM) for a long time, but i want to get Root access, i've been reading a lot and it seems if i use Galaxy Nexus Toolkit it will delete all my data, there's any way to root it without losing any data?

no.
you have to unlock your bootloader (no matter which method you use, also, dont use a toolkit, use the sticky at the top of the forum) which wipes your data. period.

I did a root of my Galaxy Nexus, when I flashed the new 4.1. It did work fine. When the phone did the small update to 4.1.2, can it be true that it rolled back the root? My phone don't seem to be rooted anymore.
Isn't it possible to get root permissions again, without loosing data?

if your bootloader is unlocked, reflash the supersu.zip
otherwise, you have to unlock the bootloader and it will wipe your device.

if you enter fastboot, it will says "lock status: unlocked"
or you can see if when you first start up your phone if there's a little lock that is unlocked.

When I receive the 4.2 update (my phone is yakju), I will root again. Thank you for your help, I appreciate it a lot.

Similar thing happened to me. I was messing around with different ROM's for some time but in the end went back to the stock ROM. My phone now shows unlocked and using the stock recovery (as described here http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-samsung-galaxy-nexus/243004-recovery-mode.html).
The stock recovery offers 4 options: reboot, apply update from ADB or USB, wipe.
How do I "reflash the supersu.zip" from here? I want to avoid wiping as everything is set up as I like it now, and because it isn't rooted I can't back it up, catch 22 thing

I'm sorry, I didn't know there was a rule against that. I searched Google for the problem and this thread came up closest.
Well sorry if I am not a genius like you who know everything already. I thought that forums like this was for asking questions.
It would be nice if instead of just being mean and nasty you'd offer some constructive suggestions, such as would installing a custom recovery wipe the phone? The distinction between the boot loader and the custom recovery isn't clear to me.

Sarcastic, aren't we? Look, XDA is first and foremost a developer site for developers to develop. Answering and asking questions about that development is only incidental. Members are expected to have read the rules of XDA and to follow them. That includes not bumping old threads, but it also includes an expectation that you will read the information readily available to you. Seeing the same common questions get asked daily, when there are good guides made specifically for this purpose, gets very old very fast. The constructive suggestion is to search and read. Guides abound both in the stickies and elsewhere, and the fact that you haven't found answers to your fairly common questions tells me that you either haven't made an effort to look, or you just don't understand and therefore probably shouldn't be messing with your phone.

I was able to root my gnex without wiping the data!
I dont know how it happened, but it happened, I was surprised too because I was really frustrated couldn't root it even after 10-15 tries ( I am a big time noob) and suddenly I unlocked the boot loader and rooted the phone without any loss of data, actually I was rooting because I had the VM100U something memory issue and my phone was terribly slow! I was surprised becasue i was expecting to copy all my files and crap one by one but now I have no issues

[Q] Would CM11 help the whites and brightness?

Firstly, love the tablet. However, the whites could be better. Would a custom rom help make them whiter? Or is that totally a hardware dependent thing? Unrelated, but is there a way to remove stock lg apps? I thought for sure i read somewhere that you can without rooting, but cant seem to find the option anywhere. Thanks

@YoungBobbie has made a kernel for the 500 device which may take care of the screen problem. His thread is in the development section for downloads and updates. You will need a custom recovery like twrp to use his kernel. There is also another person working on a 500 kernel as well that may be available soon.

Sweet. 'Thanks' coming your way. I've seen the root method for the g pad. And it seems that the method bypasses unlocking the boot loader. Is it the same with flashing a custom recovery and Roms? No boot loader unlocking needed? Don't mean to go ot, but I figured I'd pick your brain instead of starting a new thread. Thanks again

A bit confused need basics explained

Hi everyone.
Im sorry if this is basics but i have moved over from sammie and can see that the G4 is a bit more complicated in regards to rooting etc.
I have an optus branded LG-H815T in Australia. My confusion surronds this locked bootloader. What exactly does this stop me doing.
I am looking to root and flash custom roms but it appears not possible.
My question is how does the bootloader effect getting custom recovery etc. Been spoiled by the samsung devs and have never really had to look into this

Its possible to have custom recoveries with lock bootloader, i've seen it in another devices but for lg..i know nothing..maybe we can look to previous lg's devices (G2/G3)..Its more complicated with lock bootloader as everything must go via adb..but now there's flash fire app that works like those custom recoveries..maybe dev can extend more features to it..
One thing for sure, we can't use custom roms because usually they are using customs kernel not stock

Yeah its all a little confusing first of all. Seems a lot more advance with all the commands etc for root. If only LG would unlock bootloaders this phone is perfect for modding as sammie has ruined their phones

Can't use them yet but G3 got a workaround for this in Oct last year, so i expect one around then or earlier for the G4.
Only then can the roms devs begin.

Bootloader unlock will make your phone like a nexus device. You unlock your bootloader to be able to use it to flash a custom recovery and from that, flash a custom ROM. Now CURRENTLY the bootloader isn't unlockable for most variants (only openmartket EUR and T-Mobile), so we can't flash custom ROMs that easily. The guys that released root for our G4 are working on a way around unlocking the bootloader (or a way to unlock it without LG's website), but they won't release it until time has passed and OTA update cycles have slowed down for the device to avoid LG blocking their methods and exploits.
That's pretty much the situation we're in right now.

Newbie! Zenfone 2 now rooted...now what!

Hi all,
I have a zenfone 2 that I have just rooted....so now what?
Basically I wanted to optimise my phone so I am able to disable annoying notifications which are greyed out (although since rooting and checking this it still greyed out) I want to remove bloatware and I would actually like to customise my own android system, starting from a 'vanilla' base where I can build it up myself.
I have also read that I need to install a android recovery programme on asap after rooting.
So sorry about this but I really do need 'stupid' instructions as using hi tech words will just baffle me. lol
I have played around with computers in the past and learned about them so this is the phone stage now!

Hi Kerry,
First thing you should now do after rooting your device would be flashing a custom recovery that is specific to your device (make sure your devices boot loader is unlocked first). This will allow you to make a backup of everything just in case anything were to go wrong, flash custom ROMs and useful zips. You can pick your favorite custom recovery such as Team Win Recovery Projects custom recovery (TWRP), Clock Work Mods custom recovery (CWM) or Philz Touch recovery based off of CWM although personally I would recommended twrp.
There are multiple ways to do this: Using the TWRP/CWM recovery installer from the play store or the more complicated way of flashing it from your computer. If you were to choose to install TWRP from their app on the play store (grant it root permission) you can select your device from the supported device section within the app, pick the latest recovery, hit the install button and let the app work its magic. If all works correctly you can now reboot to recovery and you will see TWRP is installed. Now you should create a backup to be on the safe side and you're good to go!
To best optimize your device I would recommend installing a custom ROM (look up custom ROMs for the Zenfone 2) and install the zip through recovery. (make sure to pick the right ROM for your device and version otherwise you may soft brick your smartphone) Now with a custom ROM you can better optimize your device and fully customize it to your liking. Make sure to look up custom ROM installation instructions for your device for better detail.
As far as removing system apps/bloatware you can use a "root app delete" tool from the play store but be careful what you remove as some applications are required!
Make sure to take your time and be careful when attempting any of these things and be careful what you modify! Just remember that no question is a stupid question as we all have to start somewhere!

I also went ahead and checked the TWRP app and the Zenfone 2 is supported so it looks like your good to go. All devices have a different method for unlocking bootloader (some don't even have locked bootloaders) but this is an official bootloader unlocking method for the Zenfone 2 from Asus itself. I suggest following its directions and you should be able to unlock it this way.

Ok I followed the link but now I am confused. I have version ww_2.20.40.63_201......
Apparently I need a later version. What started off with just adding an APP means me doing other things before I even get to that point (hence the confusion! lol)
I never updated the phone via OTA as I was told it would invalidate my warranty and also I have killed a phone before using that so can you walk me through please...if you have the time....or could I just check if I have it unlocked already??
I haven't even gotten to the part where I create a backup...tee hee

Hi sorry for the late reply, I'm in Canada so it was 2am when I was last talking to you so I went to bed haha. Anyway as far as unlocking the Zenfone 2's bootloader I wouldn't have experience unfortunately as I'm using a Nexus 5. The easiest way to go about this now would be to go to your device specific forum and find a way to unlock it there.
The following way to unlock the bootloader requires you have ADB installed on your PC. This is a guide for installation on Windows :

BTW as you mentioned "updating may invalidate your warranty" things like rooting, installing a custom OS, unlocking the bootloader, installing a custom recovery and other things like that all (in most cases) void your warranty.
