Is there any way to tell what version of android i'm running from examining the files on the SDcard?
I have a virgin mobile galaxy s3, I kept getting software update prompts and ignoring them. I may have updated at one point, I don't remember.
All I can look at are the contents of the SD card, and i'm trying to unbrick a hard brick ( can't get into recovery , phone shows no signs of life. Flash seemed to work correctly, and then after phone reboot, phone shows no signs of life, and I am trying to use the SD card method to revive my phone but I don't know what version of android I was running.)

Of you can read the internal SD, take a look at your build.prop
I can get in to philz recovery manager with this method - but after i'm in philz, what do I do? How do I flash an image? My SD card is now tiny, If I try to use diskpart or minitool partition wizard to reformat while it's mounted from philz, it won't let me.
Is it okay to remove the SD card while i'm in philz recovery manager, and then put the card in my computer, restore the partitions, put the stock file on the drive, then reflash?
Should be

SU or SUDO ring any bells?
Google your error and adb. Also your posting in wrong area
WOW that is so URGENT!!! Can you still use your phone? Did you brick your phone?
Pull out the damn SD card place it in your computer and put the DAMN file in the root of it and flash it!! Or connect your phone through USB and click connect SD and a DRIVE to the computer and put it in there... Then FLASH IT.
Oh wait Here's your sign!!!
Better yet, if it is so URGENT, Call Sprint and ask them!!!! They will tell you how todo it.
LMFAO, bet he does it too.
Format your sd card through the phone menu then try again
Ah, bro. I hope you brought your flame suit lol. In all seriousness though, back up your sd card using a card reader like the above post says. You can either just save the unrevoked file that way or reformat the card through custom recovery w new fat32 and ext partitions. After that copy your backup sd files to the sd card and all should be well. If you're running a custom kernel some previous versions have had trouble w adb so reflash stock kernel. Pm if you have trouble and I'll walk you through. Obviously not a true emergency and I'm sure you would have gotten a lot less grief I'd it were, but it happens. / moving on...

So the big question is, why did it do this, and what can I do to fix it? Help is much appreciated since he has no backup phone and he's a heavy user so he needs his phone back up and running asap

Those errors are likely caused by a hardware error (bad internal memory chip): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039504
Hey rickyiswhite, I've experienced the same problem with my htc hd2. I am not hundred percent sure how and why this happened, but I managed to get my phone back to life. Here are two methods which I think might help you.
1. You might be missing 'initrid' and 'zImage' files in your sd card. You need these two files to flash new rom from your sd card otherwise the phone cant 'recognize' your sd card. You can find these two files from any rom you have downloaded, just copy and paste them into your sd card's root folder.
2. If this is not the case, I would recommend you to format your sd card (fat 32, i tried once to format my sd card to ntfs, and kind of destroyed it), and clear everything inside your phone using 'task29', which means you will lose everything stored inside your phone and sd card. Then you can uninstall and reinstall the HSPL (this might not be necessary, but I did that, just to make sure everything is cleared). Afterwards you just have to flash the radio and the magldr back. What's left now is to copy your rom into your sd card, remember to copy the 'initrd' and 'zImage' as well, and flash the rom, done!
However, I can't guarantee this would work because you know, different devices, so you have to take your own risk and responsibility to do this. FYI, you can also flash a new rom through computer, using the DFT.exe inside the rom. But currently most of the roms are flashed through magldr or clk, so it would take you some time to find the rom that can be flashed directly via computer.
Anyway, good luck to you, and hope these tips might help
after install the rom of MIUI
SD device is not work again, even can't connect to computer
anymethod to write the backup to the GN,does adb shell work?????
1) Gonna need more information to help you.
1a) what MIUI rom did you install and how did you install it
2) what trouble shooting steps have you already taken
3) you should probably look inside the thread from the rom that you used. Also posting your problems in there will most likely get them answered quicker by people who use that particular rom or the developer.

Are you connected to your computer when trying to read the SD card...... that would prevent it and give you that error. Seeing the android icon in the corner makes me think so

or use usb mount to mount the internal storage to the computer
I have a Sprint Galaxy S3 with a 16GB Samsung SD card. In attempt to transfer the music from the SD card to my computer's hard-drive (via a USB cardreader), the transfer really began to hang and throw some odd errors. Not thinking, I pulled the cardreader out of the USB port during the transfer. Since then, I cannot get the SD card to be recognized in Windows at all (through a USB to phone or through the cardreader). The only thing that appears is the S3 itself and the internal storage. When I put the SD card back in the phone, it is showing a "Removed SD card" error and it isn't showing anything about the card under Settings>Storage. Only the internal storage is displayed and everything under "SD card" is greyed out. There is no option to mount the card at all and I'm unable to format the card through the phone or computer. I realize that removing the cardreader during the transfer probably corrupted the SD card. Is there anyway at all of reformatting this card and getting it functional again? I've tried TestDisk, but the problem is that the SD card isn't showing up anywhere at this point. Is it permanently bricked?
Try to download SD format tool from the web and make Low Level Format.
But before that try another card reader.
If that doesn't work, download the free Windows tool USBit. It has a reset button which will overwrite a couple key blocks on your SD card. Don't hold your breath but it did work for me in a couple extreme circumstances like yours.

Hello there,
I have this M8 for almost a year now and I Love it!
Also, by using common sense (and the holly Google) I managed to find a solution for anything but now
it seems to escape me...
allow me to be rude/dirty/ugly:
I gut a big folder of porn on my SD named ".somethingy" (dot up front, for gallery invisibility).
and it was all well.
using USB I put/delete files in the folder, and using Filexpert app to view them.
When using the USB connection I could see 3 folders
1. Internal Storage
2. SD Card
3. ext_sd
now, I don't know what happened but
I can no longer see the ext_sd through USB!
Using Filexpert I can browse and watch the stuff but not with USB.
Any ideas/solutions?
Thanks in advance.,
Mch5.
Flash the modded firmware which contains a part of sense.. And you will see it again.. You must flash the rom new after that.. Find it in my gpe rom thread

Thank you for the reply.
This is an unrooted phone.
I was hoping to find a less destructive solution.
Than you could try to reformat the card or and reset the phone ?..

Tried reseting - didn't work.
Formating the SD - how will it help?
The SD is fully accessible by the phone just not(or partially) by USB.
It used to work! I had access, I have old files on it which I can view with the phone!
Can the filesystem spontaneously change? its not making sense!
but if it does, and did... I'll format it.
I want to understand.
Best way is still to root.. Twrp recovery.. Make a backup and start completely new with a stock like rom..
Btw.. Have you tried a other pc and cable..?

Thank You!
I've tried on a different PC and there, there was no drive at all.
and it seems that it failed to install the MTP driver, which make perfect sense with the issue!
so I went back to my PC, removed any HTC software&drivers,
manually downloaded HTC sync manager,
Installed it and the drivers included,
Uninstalled sync manager Only...
Now everything is perfect!
Thank You!

Try to place all the files from the SD on your phone or your pc
Then format the SD card via the buildin Windows tool
Make sure MTP is enabled under Storage on your phone
