Restore root for OTA updates - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys,
Do we have a way to restore root to a device to recieve OTA updates? Previously I would use the Root Keeper app, but that hasn't worked since 4.3 was released. I'm specifically looking for a way that doesn't involve reflashing the stock firmware in Odin and basically starting fresh. I'd like to keep my device as is, just restore root to pull OTA updates.

Did you make a backup on out-of-the-box,no-root stock?

Yes, but that essentially would be the same as loading stock firmware, since it was the first thing I did. (No apps installed, no account syncs etc.)

Alright, so Superuser is able to restore root to the device, but OTA still won't work because the device is still detected as unauthorized modification. Looks like I'll be stuck pushing firmware after all.

Use Kies to update, it allows updates even if you are rooted stock.

Does this install the stock recovery as well?

Yes and you'll have to reroot as well.

That's okay - I'm wiping everything in order to sell. Which option should I choose? Emergency firmware recovery?

If you're wiping, yes. Then you'll Reset to factory defaults in phone.

It's funny that nobody seems to want to use Kies, but it's a great way to safely update the phone, you don't have to wait for OTA to get pushed to your phone, and it works on rooted phone.

I played with the Flex 2 at CES, I wasn't that impressed. I need a removable battery in my phone, plus that slight curve still makes for an awkward pocket fit.

Defeat 2.3.4 OTA update?

After living with the sync issues of 2.3.4 for far too long, I loaded the stock 2.3.3 firmware to get the functionality back. Immediately, of course, I got prompted to install the new OTA update. Can I disable the update check somehow and be rid of it for good?

I haven't rooted any of my devices before, but I see no reason not to root this guy since VZW and SE have hung it out to dry anyway.
Once rooted, how would I squash the update?
Install titanium backup and use it to remove the OTA service

The above is one way to do it....make sure you make a backup first just in case.....what I did after rooting was freeze mobilecare with link2sd....but using TB to uninstall works too.

So my phone has already downloaded the update and is bugging me to install. Will freezing the service stop that or is it just responsible for fetching the update?

Sorry, but I don't know, I always had my phone in use so I would just cancel the update...but it SHOULD stop asking for an install....sorry if this doesn't help much, I always cancled the update before it could even download.

[Q] Removing Lookout

Got a brand new S4 and would like to remove Lookout. I've deactivated the app from Device Administrators and then tried to uninstall it but the only option I have is to uninstall updates. Has anyone been able to remove this succesfully?
Root it and then use titanium backup and use that to get rid of it.

If not rooted, you can also go to settings>more>app manager>lookout>then disable the app.
loockout was the first app i deleted after acquiring root access....that app is so annoying.

Flash a recovery and then flash root, you're guaranteed root then, lookout or not.

Apps running in the background?

How do I prevent apps from running constantly in the background? And by apps I mean Samsing link, S Health, Samsung Watch On, and Samsung Apps
I'm not rooted, but when I was rooted I used greenify to disable them but now I can't. I'm on 4.3. Also, I'm not looking to uninstall or disable the app, just prevent it from running in the background.
Thanks in advance

Rooting simply allows you to gain super user and control every single aspect of your phone. You can disable battery hogging services to removing preinstalled apps to customizing everything about your phone. Think of your phone as a demo app and root is the premium key that unlocks all the features of the full retail version. ^.^

This.
You can also uninstall SuperUser really easily (there is literally a button in the app settings to do just that). That will unroot your phone and let you get OTA's again in seconds. Then just just have to re-root when you're done the OTA.
This, of course, is if you JUST have the SuperUser app installed as part of your root package. If you have a custom recovery installed that's a different story. You'd have to remove that too.
But if you just root with a method like Chainfire's Auto Root, you will have the stock rom, stock recovery, and can easily ditch the SUperuser app so you can get an OTA whenever it comes out. Since they dont' come out super often, it's not in the way at all. It's not like you'd have to do that every week.
Just some suggestions! Hope they are useful.

Whatever happened around here? I would have thought someone would have informed the OP that those apps are not "running". Yes they are taking up RAM but this isn't Windows either. The way m we memory is handled is vastly different and in some ways, opposite of conventional Windows thinking. They are not using power either.
I never freeze an app or force kill it unless it causes an issue. If I don't use it - root, uninstall, be happy. I only say all of that so the OP didn't pickup the bad habit of killing apps to regain RAM. Its unnecessary to say the least.

Another thing is that some apps will, by default, execute when opening certain web based applications (FF, Chrome, Internet). Same goes when enabling Wifi.
It does get tedious disabling them all the time if you're someone who wishes to have your device quiet and clean.
I just decided to uninstall them all via Titanium backup...Most of them you can download via Play if you ever wanted them back.

I Need Help!!!

Kinda a nube to this but here I go lastnight I decided to root my note with Odin using the cw root method on the pda file it rooted and gave me super user I flashed a custom recovery and did a backup I'm guessing it didn't fully back up because after I did that I tried to flash dn3 and it didn't work so I restored and after that my data disappeared now I am stuck with a phone that won't start up roms or let me get my data back due to a bad backup need help!

I read your first post again and just noticed that you flashed DN3. Was that my port or one from a different device? I am guessing that it was from the n7105 thread.
If you hit me up on hangouts ( [email protected] ) I can help you out.

Well after working with @imxsteezin I found his issue. He flashed the DN3 rom from another n2 device. I got him back up and running but warned him that flashing roms not for your specific device is bad. He got luck that it was a simple fix this time.
I guess you can flash everything back to stock and start over again

Quick question

I tried to find the answer.. But no luck.. Maybe I'm too enhanced at the moment. But does this particular phone have a flash counter? And if so, can it be reset?

Never heard of a flash counter for this phone. I thought that was something only samsung did.
I couldn't tell you how many times I have flashed various roms. I still haven't had any issues.

There is a indicator in the bootloader I believe that trips when it's running custom roms but goes back to normal when put back to stock.
Sweet thanks for the info!
