I figure since it is a DEVELOPER center for HTC phones, it deserves to be in the Dev section! Anyway, OpenSense SDK, Kernel Source code, and unlock bootloaders soon to come!(hopefully for Inc2 as well...) Who is excited??
http://htcdev.com/
(EDIT) Please go to http://htcdev.com/contact and tell them to unlock all of the inc 2s that were "graced" with gingerbread...

Technically, yes. If you have an XTC clip or a Froyo phone (which are harder to get as every day goes by). So, in response to your statement I'd have to say yes, but not really.
From the way they've been explaining things it's going to be device specific, and our device hasn't been mentioned. It would be nice if all HTC devices were able to just be unlocked.

It would be extremely nice of HTC to do this for those that were not so quick to pick one of these amazing devices up as fast as some of us

yea but you have to submit all this information. I'd get an XTC clip. all of them are unlimted now. and I'm sure raskal is going to continue to do his thing, I'd rather pay for a device that can s-off a numerous number of phones for a one time price. I'd rather not root than give my information and have them monitor to see if I am tethering and what not.

Its would be a hard decision to choose free vs. private/unlimited (assuming that HTC releases it for Inc2...)
Just because you unlock your bootloader doesn't mean they are gonna be out there to see if you tether.

As long as Verizon doesn't extend their hand into this it may very well be a great thing.
Damn, I hope HTC will release the unlocked bootloader for Inc2, will save me $15! I'm wishing I didn't return my S-OFF'd Inc2 for a brand new Inc2 (other one was banged up badly). Anyone in LA/San Bernadino County want to meet up so I can S-OFF my phone? I'd be extremely great full, PM me if you're in either county!
HTC is asking us what we want from this site...
I would include the link, but cannot post a link yet... but goto htcdev.com/contact
... you think we can make our presence known and that we want our Inc2 unlocked!
Well they said the Evo3d and the Sensation, but I see a picture of the desire s, hopefully this will be for all HTC devices.

This was released and am wondering if any one that was NOT able to get S-Off via Firewater has tried this and gotten a successful S-Off status on their phone. I want to try it but its $25 and am not feeling very adventurous right now.
I did... Worked perfect. You have to be on a stock rom and kernel.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
Worked well, it runs compatability test before you are asked to pay. You won't get to pay portion of it unless your rom/kernel is compatible.
HTC One M8
Firewater failed on my T Mobile m8, so I tried SunShine as soon as I saw it was released. SunShine worked perfectly. It's actually from the same devs that created Firewater. I suggest you give it a try. Get a rom as close to stock as possible and run it. If it won't work on your phone, it will tell you before you pay a penny. It's also crazy easy to use. In my opinion, it's worth every bit of the $25.
says its $25 bucks. not bad. gonna try it later today
Originally I received the ***whelp this sucks**** message. I tried Sunshine and within 10 minutes (reading everything and watching the how-to video) I was S-off! Thanks a million! $25 well worth it! I hope this sets a model for the Android community!
this app is the sh!t!!!! $25 is not a bad price to pay so you could do even more with you phone :good:

Thanks for the replies. Several of you couldn't do it with firewater but it did work with Sunshine. I'll be paying for it on Monday when I get paid.

If you're rooted and running a near stock rom, then no. If not on a near stock rom, you can always download one, create a back up of your existing one, flash new one, s-off with sunshine, restore backup.

Android is a commercial product, phones are a commercial product, and many (most of the more complex) apps are commercial products.
The reasons are explained on the website, but look at it this way. If you put 100s and 100s of hours installing copper/fiber into a building, would you expect to get paid for it? That is some hard work, I still have scars from that. This is hard work too.

At first, I was kind of skeptical on paying for it as well, but then I started to think about it...
Jcase and Beaups worked on the Firewater release and made it free and I was able to take advantage of that and then deciced to S-on and update to the OTA and lost the ability to run it again. Sunshine was a way to grant me S-Offf again, plus it feels ore like a contribution towards their work on both releases.

Whoops. Well, You at least worked on this. and helped out the verizon people. Haven't you done more then that though? I feel like I've seen you around before on different devices.
Chainfire posted a long writeup of what the future holds for root on Android phones including Lollipop. It's an interesting read.
"As stated above, it seems for now that modifications to the kernel package are required to have root, we cannot attain it with only modifications to the system partition.
Combine that with a locked bootloader (and optionally dm-verity) and a device becomes nigh unrootable - exactly as intended by the security guys.
Exploit-based roots are already harder to do thanks to SELinux, and now because of the kernel requirements for persistent root, these exploits will need to be run at every boot. Exploits that make the system unstable (as many do) are thus out as well.
It is now thus more important than ever to buy unlocked devices if you want root."
Edit: Tikerz beat me to it. His post is here. Mods delete if you want.
No real surprise to me. It was only a matter of time before it got locked down to the point of no easy exploit. I'm surprised it took this long, actually.

man locking bootloaders is one thing.. but root??!?
its not even a poormans route anymore to get a carrier phone over a factory one, you need to choose between functionality or reception..
i wonder if Xposed is responsible for crazy bootloader security moving over to root.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA Free mobile app
The lack of root in the foreseeable future really ruined my excitement for this phone I have gotten so used to all the nice features of root (in addition to custom ROMs) like Ti Backup, AdAway, customization, etc. that I do not want to fork out the money for a phone that doesn't feel truly mine.
That said, I'm confident the devs will find a solution. Just like every iPhone has been jailbroken there will be root for the Note 4!
There is a root for the note 4.....just not ours ...as intended...if we want root we bought the wrong device...I got it the day before it came out in the mail and was excited I wasn't aware that it was going to be so neglected...I was at least hoping for a safestrap like the note 3 I had that I don't anymore because it shattered and they gave me this as a replacement...now I can't get root...way too sleezy...they got me!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA Free mobile app
I certainly don't see it as 'sleezy', as the devices were always known to be locked. It isnt like AT&T were endorsing root or safe strap in the first place... Or secretly locked it at the last minute without telling anyone.
But opinions on morality aside, it is disappointing that root may take a while. Though I'm still optimistic that it will happen eventually.

Yeah, if you can afford it, for the rest of us though, it sounds like we'll be out of luck.
Maybe we need to start looking at hardware hacks, like when chipping a console?
Maybe an insecure boot.img can root this phone.
Focus on the boot loader. If it gets unlocked we will be fine with root.

nice having posts like this just right up front.... I come to xda for the modding and mainly rooting of my phones.... att releases a totally locked down note 4 and already people are speaking out about its probably not going to get an unlock like the s5... I give up all hope of seeing a subsidized note 4 and start waiting on a nexus 6 to see if the bootloader is still unlockable.
So within 3 posts and less than 15 minutes I learned abandon the att n4... quick and easy... ty xda :highfive:

Hi all!
Just picked up an M9 this week... Had an M8 prior to that. I've been reading through the forums and spent some time on the M8 forums flashing, testing, and customizing the phone with Roms. I've been reading about the M9 and have noticed some mention that Verizon is firm about a locked bootloader and all. I was curious how on the M8, S-off and unlocking the bootloader was achieved if Verizon is so strict about keeping the phone locked down? Thanks for any responses in advance Looking forward to customizing this beast of a phone. Thank you to all the Devs that make all of this possible!
Cheers,

The M8 was like this when it first came out. Yes Verizon is strict. From what I have been told they are trying to find a Temporary Root Exploit to be able to S-Off and all that goodness. We just have to be patient like the First Model M8 people were. Luckily when I first got my M8 it was rootable and stuff. So just be patient, or feel free to donate to jcase and beaups to help buy them energy drinks.
Everything @Balian67 said an also one tip. Don't do any updates till you are s-off as updates could cause exploit not to work if there is a exploit released.

Totally agree with this!! Oh my lord is there a difference between Touchwiz and Sense. The way Samsung complicates settings drives me bonkers. It just doesn't need to be that complicated.
I'm in S6 trial week. Lol. So far not impressed. The so called super snappy touchwiz has a laggy keyboard whether stock or google. Also don't get me started on Chrome browser lag. Little things here and there that are non existent on even the m8. Overall its snappy but it still has annoying hicups here and there. Gonna take a miracle for me not to exchange for an m9 next weekend.
I had an M7 but not an M8 and had put AOSP on it because Sense just didn't feel right to me.
I bought an M9 because of the retail employee deal of no-contract for $300 and trading in for the new one every year. Ditched my G3 and haven't looked back. I love Sense 7. Not only is the UI smooth and really easy to use, the whole design language flows so well with the physical design of the phone. I don't think I'll be putting a custom ROM on this but I would love root for an ad blocker. I forgot how many ads there were on phones until I had to use this M9 without root.
Is anyone planning on making a bounty thread?

No need really. Bounty threads are worthless distractions too.
For example, one of the last ones claimed only netted the receiver 30% of all promised funds.
Sunshine will likely include vzw some time in the near future...you probably didn't use it on your m7 but it's a standalone app and costs $25.

Well, it worked on the S5, that's for sure. Leading to the most prolific exploit in android history with Towelroot, so I wouldn't say pointless. I'm not sure the exact % that paid their pledges, but I paid mine. The ads in apps and webpages are really starting to bug me honestly, and I miss my battery-saving apps and xposed modules. I jumped to HTC from the S5 specially to restore bootloader access and ultimately CM-based ROM's to my phone experience. I guess leaving Verizon would have been a more thoughtful choice, but oh well. If anyone starts a bounty thread (and yes I know almost everyone thinks its a bad idea), I'm in.
That being said, much respect to the people working on a root method for us currently. You guys make my little phone hacking hobby possible, so thank you.

I don't know exactly how true it was, but when I first got my M8 and found out that I had to pay $25 to get S-OFF, at first I was hesitant...But I kept reading WHY and immediately understood and paid right away. It separates guys like us who pay their pledge from people who DON'T. As I am sure you would EASILY pay the $25 to get S-OFF. I know I would. I almost prefer it this way, because im pretty much sure it comes with tech support for those who need it. If only more americans stood by their word instead of promising things they would never fulfill. I know that this community has always been about contributing and free things to make all of our experiences better. I get that, but all too often, people take the work and claim it to be theirs. I remember a few devs (that I talked to a lot) had this problem with users of the Samsung Moment and HTC Evo 4G. So between all of the devs hard work not being appreciated (especially when they do this stuff for THEIR phone and they release it to us to enjoy and some people are always complaining or demanding features, yet they don't contribute by donating to the dev so they can buy energy drinks to keep their mind going, or beer to help relax them after they finished a massive update that fixed all the bugs and added features and stuff. Then people wonder why they have to pay $25. Well I have been a member of XDA for years, contributed a lot here or on irc chat, and I will gladly pay $25 to get S-OFF, Root, and Custom Recovery. Why? Because since the DAWN of xda, everyones phone has been made far better then what ANY manufacturer gives us. I mean seriously...I would have Android Lollipop on devices that Samsung or whoever has long gone moved on from. Why? Because of XDA, and the devs. I swear if everyone paid $25 these devs would be able to buy all sorts of devices to root for us. I know I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro, and an HTC. So I appreciate it, and you know what? I consider that $25 a donation to have root on devices period. Why? Because without the people who know what they're doing, I wouldn't be able to install xposed, make entire backups of my phone (so if the device fails while on warranty), I can EASILY restore my phone. I had that happen with my old HTC Evo 4G LTE. That phone broke 3 times on me and each replacement bestbuy gave me (2), all I had to do was get S-OFF flash a custom recovery, and do a "Restore" then all my texts were there, apps were there (with data), call logs were there. I can go on. That $25 is security for me. So saying all that, I will sit here as patient as I can be to get S-OFF and when the time comes to hit the pay button, there wont be a second thought. No regrets. No more stress. Any more Andybones roms to flash.
BOOM (pardon all the grammatical errors, yall get my point.............right?)

First of all, a BIG thanks to @dottat for his willingness to provide this for us!! :good: Secondly, the more of us with a rooted/unlocked M9 - the more development we'll see for the Verizon M9! And finally, here are the details to how I achieved root access, S-OFF and a custom recovery on my M9
What you need:
•Verizon M9
•Patience (don't hurt your mailman)
•Appreciation (via donation)
•Mailing address
•Paypal
Basic steps
1. PM @dottat - request an unlock for your VZW M9
2. Pack up your M9 and send it to him (he'll do the hard part)
3. Send your DONATION - I gave him $25 plus the amount it will cost him to ship it back.
*Per xda rules, there is to be NO selling on the site. So, this is why you see the term "donation" in this thread.
I am VERY satisfied with how smoothly everything went and HIGHLY RECOMMEND using this same method! Just ask everyone else who has done this as well. He sends your phone back to you the SAME DAY he gets it. You'll have your M9 rooted, with TWRP installed, unlocked bootloader - S-Off. The java card he is using to do this is NOT CHEAP, so don't hesitate to send more $ if you can spare it. I love this method because its a win/win for us all. We get S-Off and he gets most of his money back
Anyways, it could be a while til a root exploit comes to the Verizon M9. That's why I'm recommending you do this too!
This is an offer I'm seriously considering! Thank you for the recommendation.
I also can attest to @dottat being an awesome human being and sending me back my phone immediately in perfect rooted unlocked twrping condition. Donated him $20 plus shipping both ways. It was such a easy process (I have my old s4 to use while it was shipping so not a big deal) so definitely recommend doing this. Currently on viperonem9 rom with elemental x kernel rooted and xposed and colour control set up so the screen looks way better. Wouldn't have been possible without his awesomeness. Thanks again @dottat
Yup @dottat a awesome guy .did mine in 30min..donated him $60...plus the cost of shipping over night both ways..he was even going to use his own money from donation to cover a mistake FedEx did..but I refused...FYI last time I'm using FedEx..they messed up twice
Any option for those of us who do not live in the US anymore?
I got my Verizon M9 hanging around here but I'm hating the bloatware apps, verizon's bootlogo and the HTC Sense. I would be a happy HTC customer otherwise..
Any news from HTCDeveloper? I'm kinda losing my temper here..

Any option for those of us who do not live in the US anymore?
I got my Verizon M9 hanging around here but I'm hating the bloatware apps, verizon's bootlogo and the HTC Sense. I would be a happy HTC customer otherwise..

I ran across this today. Most likely won't work, but worth a shot I guess. It says for for certain m9 variants but doesn't specify Verizon. I would try for you, but I had dottat s-off my Verizon m9.

It would work in theory but it requires unlocked bootloader, which is not an option right now thanks to the lack of HTC DEV support.
I have been waiting since day one of release to s-off/unlock or at least root my m9. I bought this phone the day it was released, not even considering the chance that there would be this much trouble to achieve. I had the HTC Rezound (verizon) and the m7(sprint) and now the m9 (verizon).
If there is a way for someone to perform this task, can we not get a guide to do such and share it with the world?!

Its not a secret, look around. You need a java card. (Which are EXPENSIVE.)
Which is exactly why there are multiple users willing to do it for you. (For a small donation)
^^^^This....do what the TS says....all will be good..and take care of the Devs and people offering this service up.
Dude DOTTAT is amazing. He will respond to any and all messages within seconds!! He let me know the phone was there 5 minutes after he recieved it and 30 minutes later hes on the way to the post office to drop my phone off! You cant beat that service!
I don't normally post much here, but I want to add that I also had dottat handle my s-off and root. The same day he received the phone he had it back in the mail on its way back to me. Very happy with the service and was glad to give him a donation of $25+.
If you are worried about losing your new phone, relax. I bought the phone and didn't get to use it (chose not to use it because it wasn't rooted yet). I eventually broke down and sent it to him (yep, I was hesitant too). But I have no fear.
If I buy an M10 next year and he can s-off the phone, I'll send it to him without any concern at all.

Well said guys, I also was the same, had the M9 for a few weeks, maybe longer, but didn't even turn it on, was on M8, didn't want to ship device, but with Doug (dottat) there is really no worry, throw some insurance on the shipping, pack it correctly and sit back and let him do his magic. You can't beat working with Doug. Always responds to you, doesn't leave you hanging, will have the device in hand before you even realize it's landed to him, and will have the device back on its way to you very quickly. (for me, he had a tracking # for the phone back to me before I even saw that it had arrived!)
Thanks again, Doug! @dottat

So it's a safe bet to say your experience shipping this time was better than last? (M7)
Good to know, thanks

Now that you have shown your true colors... I ask that you take a look at when this thread was created. Back then it wasn't an environment where hardly anyone had a java card or clip. Your thread was posted by you and was a direct advertisement that was in duplication to the currently supported java card thread.
I really don't understand what is so hard to understand about this notion. As I mentioned to you in PM, you are new here with no credibility for folks to send their $600 device to. You NEED to be vetted. Not turning your fire on me or any other member of this community.
If you choose to continue to make waves, we will shut that thread and folks can be left to find their own ways to get s-off.
I have done more favors for this community both as a recognized contributor and a moderator. I have saved countless phones and done many s-off's for nothing. I have even used my own donations to pay to ship phones for which I didn't even take anything to s-off.
Unless you can say the same, we are done here.

Just to add emphasis to the above, dottat has also spent countless hours via remote desktop assisting members (for free as always) with any and all related phone issues. Most everyone here can attest to his contributions to XDA and his efforts to go above and beyond so who are you to judge or make such claim? I suggest you check your facts before you spout off senseless garbage and become another waste of time for everyone else here. So far all you've managed to contribute to anyone here is trolling.
